xxaleenazxx Listen, I'm an Irish person who has been on holiday in London a few times over the past few years, and I have managed to attract a lot of attention inadvertently from a lot of different men. I was covered up (usually wearing a coat) and wearing sensible trousers, but people seem to be suckers for transient pretty looks regardless. Maybe because I have Venus tightly conjunct Mars (if you happen to be an astrology buff) in my astrological birth chart. Who knows? But one thing I know is that it means FUCK ALL to have people fancy you; the only thing that matters is to have people feel a genuine kinship with you and to care about you as a human being. Unless you (God forbid) happen to die at a young age, before the physical rot sets in. All I have ever wanted is to wholeheartedly love and care for someone, and to receive the same in return. It's a reciprocal two-way street, and I think of it almost every night before I fall asleep. Hopefully, we will all find this ideal-made-manifest someday before we die.
And that's WHY she's been as successful as she has, BECAUSE she looks like a pop star. No one gives a FUCK about talent, it's ALL based on superficial attributes.

Yeah, Simon should make her Audition for "The X Factor" instead of just sitting next to him as a judge. It'd be funny to see what happened. What Simon, Louie, and Scary thought of her. If they voted "yes" or "no". If Scary Auditioned, she'd get "yes" votes. I've heard her sing as part of being a judge on "The X Factor", but I haven't seen Cheryl get up there and sing.........yet. The judges/mentors are suppose to sing with their last person of their group, but I haven't seen Cheryl yet. So maybe there was something to that comment Cher Lloyd said to or about Cheryl, that pissed Cheryl off and made her snap back at Cher by saying "be careful of who you kick on the way up because you'll get kicked twice as hard on the way back down" (or something to that effect). Perhaps Cher was intimating that Cheryl can't sing "live", that she can only sing and sound good if enhanced in the studio. I dunno, cuz Cher's statement wasn't clear to me, and she never clarified it. I think they are still at odds with eachother. Cher Lloyd can sing pretty well.
Someone put together a video that made it look like Cheryl was auditioning and judging and interviewing HERSELF.. It was kinda funny.

They are going to make their money by cashing in on her looks, which is what makes her marketable. It's not about the singing, never has been.
Those old retards are disgustig, talking about her looks, instead of her voice. She isn't bad, but everyone knows why she made it. But she became a good judge at this show, later on, and that's what she publically does best. In fact, I didn't know her from anywhere else, and I had to watch her audition now. As I thought, she didn't surprise me. Once, Louis walsh said that not having a great voice never stopped girlbands from making it. Now I see he was a judge when she was a contestant...Cheryl was standing beside him and her face said it all. And then, once a guy that was a contestant the same year Cheryl was, appeared to be judged when Cheryl was a judge, and she refused to judge him. But the other judges told him to give up, cause he wasn't bad but he wasn't good enough. I kept thinking, how that was just Cheryl's situation too- not good enough. It could be him standing where she is right now, and she being told no, cause both of them share the same talent. By the way, the guy was good looking too. I think Cheryl knew that too, she knows she was just luckier, as she went home in her limousine and he drove in his car...

Nowadays on shows like The Voice you have to be able to sing, and a pretty face isn't as marketable as it was then.On X Factor, they are slightly more about looks, and also if you are entertaining with not the best voice, you have a shot, even though the winner is the one who can sing.

To be fair, you don’t have to be a good singer to judge. Judging vocals and singing are 2 completely different skills

The truth is it is a singing contest. Not a looks competition and not necessarily a popularity competition. To have a career in singing and selling albums, you need to have a great singing voice, vocal range, the pitch, the tone and good vocal control. Cheryl's voice is just very, very average and nothing really special. Letting people having a career in music just for the way they look is patronising and giving them false hope. She really should have been judged on her vocals instead of her looks, that's what auditions and singing competitions are really all about. She can be complemented on her looks. Anyone can be complemented on their looks, but, they still have to be judged purely on their vocals in singing competitions and auditions.
@@josephlewis9237yes but the truth is as someone else said you don’t need to be an amazing singer to judge singing. plus the x factor was more about coaching an an aspiring singer to do well in a competition / the industry so she had the ability to do that having gone through a competition and being in the industry

Watching these old auditions back it really goes to show the entire industry is about looks and money rather than talent... I've watched this and Kimberly and Sarahs audition too and they are very average. Dont get me wrong, Girls Aloud are pop icons and has some great songs. Its just such a superifical industry.
Yes, look at JLo live, Britney, Cassie. Even Rihanna isn't great. Beyonce and Christina Aguilera are born singers and entertainers, they're the real deal.

for many women their face is their fortune it helps them get married have their pick of men most women want to be footballers wife etc & also helps them get pregnant with many men lusting after them it would arouse sperm competition syndrome in many men. in usa there are beauty pageants everywhere on usa import tv shows they select pretty women to boost their ratings eg csi vegas, miami, new york or fox news etc. although women still get university degrees their beauty is an aspect of their life they on daily basis maintain and look after. beauty for women is bonus asset they still can get sex if they are plainer but more options if they are deemed beautiful it has to be said

She obviously got through because of her looks. Just look at how stunned the judges were at her beauty and they didn't even comment on her singing.

Yes and no. It was an audition for a TV show to form a group. Cheryl was pretty enough to be on TV, and at the time groups often had a lead singer, with a bunch of pretty singers who were seldom heard singing alone. Miss Tweedy wasn't a contender to sing lead, but she was perfect for the pop market.
@@alberto8461 and Cheryl had a unique-ish voice, a bit like Mel C of The Spice Girls.
@@dahmeg7801 Cheryl's voice was fine and it got better with the practice and the coaching that comes with being part of a competitive project like "Popstars." I personally wouldn't think to compare her to Mel C (I think Mel C is the strongest vocalist of the Spice Girls, while for me Nadine was the strongest singer in GA) but Cheryl has always been memorable and she more than earned her place in the group... and found solo success after that!
A lot of people being a bit harsh towards Cheryl here.
In her book, she recalls her first audition. She remembers the compliments to her appearance and while flattered, she also admits to being somewhat annoyed and frustrated they were ignoring her singing. Even later in the show closer to the band forming, Geri Halliwell just kept telling her how pretty she was. Cheryl recalls thinking that she didn’t make the trip from Newcastle all the way down to London to have people waxing over her looks.
Unfortunately there is an element of truth to the accusations she made into Girls Aloud as eye candy, hence being branded ‘The Fit One’ of the band. Therefore you could argue that Cheryl exemplifies everything wrong with modern music culture, skipping through life on looks and no talent. And getting involved in a punch up with a toilet cleaner in a nightclub a few months later did her no favours.
But…….that’s where I’m going to stop and try to defend her a tiny bit.
The thing with Cheryl’s voice is that it’s not even THAT bad. She’s not ridiculously out of tune or anything. It’s just her voice isn’t powerful enough for any kind of energetic upbeat music. Her voice is too soft and throaty for powerful or high notes, hence why in Girls Aloud she always struggled against the other girls, even Sarah bless her wasn’t the best singer but she still out sang Cheryl.
In my opinion Cheryl’s vocals are completely wrong for the pop music she was always performing. Mezzo sopranos are more suited for quieter and more restrained genres of music. Of course there are exceptions, Ann Wilson of Heart is a mezzo soprano and her primary genre is hard rock. But for the most part mezzo sopranos are more suited to gentler genres, folk, acoustic, world and New Age music like Enya. Cheryl’s biggest problem is she’s in the wrong genre of music.
she has improved vocally so much since gettin in the band, now the second lead vocalist, amazing dancer obviously stunning!

I feel the need to say to the comments section:
One must put this audition in perspective. It was one of hundreds that day in a cattle call. It was also the first stage of a long process. They could afford to just pick somebody for the next stage (which was a 3 day boot camp) just on the merit of looks and some other Star factor besides vocals.
And when two veteran music producers and a veteran pop star who just came out of the biggest UK girl group of that era look at a 19 year old girl and say there's something about her that's worth another look, they're probably right.
One should also remember they were casting for a group. When you put a vocal group together right, they can make a great whole out of a hunch of lesser, imperfect parts. Girls Aloud was made up of girls who (at the time) were a bit incomplete or had some factor that stood in their way as solo stars. One Direction and Little Mix were put together for the same reasons. The subsequent success of all three groups proved the formula.
And she has the audacity to judge other people and tell them they can't sing.

She worked hard for her accomplishments and she deserves it. I admire her not because she has an amazing vocals or because she is beautiful, but because of her overall personality, humility, and compassion. The fact that she can sing and amazingly dance is a plus for me. I don't understand why people waste their time watching her videos only to hate on her - if people think she cannot sing and talentless then don't watch her.

Pete Waterman. He was basically the Simon Cowell of the late 80s. Responible for pretty much ruining the British charts in the way Cowell does today. Cheap and tacky pop songs galore, manufactured attractive groups that lasted 5 minutes and would have several artists in the charts at a time. On the other side he did find Kylie who was one of his few credible finds.

She was very lucky in those days the standard wasnt so so high to be a singer. To be in a group though you dont have to have a very strong voice its all about how you contribute to the group combined sound. Yes I agree her looks played a huge part to get her through.

True... but in the end, the public loved her and they were the ones voting. She didn't get the best comments on her singing later on, but she got more votes than any other contestant and was the first girl officially picked to be in the pop group. Pop music isn't really about singing. It's about an image, and Cheryl - who grew up in humble circumstances but was naturally gorgeous and had tonnes of confidence - made the public love her more than they loved pretty girls who were also strong vocalists. Cheryl is a Britney Spears, not a Mariah Carey.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with her singing. Her type of music isn't about great singing, it's just about good singing and a great image and she is exceptionally good looking and sing fine.

I gather you don't sing professionally or play any musical instruments. 17 seconds in I heard her sing a note too sharp. To say she is completely in tune is wrong. It's not an opinion, staying in tune is something that can be measured and it's a factual thing, and she simply isn't in tune.
Rarely does someone sing perfectly in tune. Run many hit records' vocals through autotune and not many (if any) would pass through without being tuned. But if someone is singing one note slightly sharp it's a bit harsh to say the performance was out of tune

Wow! I watched this show when it aired and I actually voted for Cheryl, but watching this again and my God she was PLAIN (still is too).
I actually thought Cheryl audition is awesome. Her tone is really really good. I like it a lot and I never even heard any of her music before as I only know her as X-factor judge. Singing it's about screaming the loudest or belting the highest note anyway. Those music heard my ears. I prefer laid back songs.

Talent is just part of it. It is the Entertainment value that counts and a beautiful woman like Cheryl, who has a lovely personality, is intelligent, cautious and stands for herself, has an undeniable advantage.
She has a good voice, which combined with her natural features, an athletic body and a fresh presence makes her star material and those judges recognized it from the first day.

Pop music is about how commercially appealing you are: aka if you have a great personality, if you're sexy, or if you're pretty looking. It has nothing to do with how talented you are. There are lots of great singers who wouldn't sell $#!+ because they are just not appealing. If you want music to be about talent there's Jazz, Soft Rock, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Opera, Country, etc. POP music is about looks and appeal.

To be fair to the Spice Girls - THEY WORKED THEIR ASSES OFF! And the fact that they aren't the best vocalists individually made them better as a group, because true harmony is not about competing vocalists like you see in a lot of groups today. A lot of the time, the groups almost feel like soloists with backup singers.

To be fair they were normal looking women with a lot of character and thats what appealed to people and their had been nothing like them before. they were like girl next door in various form where as Cheryl Cole has been manufactured into being some kind of national icon by the bullshiters and the money.
When the Spice Girls were around it was still about having distinctive songs and music now that doesn't matter so much.

The fact that the Spice Girls weren't stunningly gorgeous is what added to their appeal. Chris Herbert intentionally choose "normal" looking girls for his group because he wanted them to be relateable to the average girls who would be buying their records. It worked. That was part of their "Image" and he knew that in Pop music Image was much more important than singing or talent.

And just a quick message to all the people talking about "the hate" cheryl cole is not a talented singer songwriter like Adele or Amy Winehouse or countless others i could mention, she has traded purely on her looks and has neither the brains nor the ability to of made it any other way. being attractive is a talent of sorts, a vacuous one but a talent none the less and she has done very well off the back of it as well as milking her own personal drama to raise her profile much higher than her band mates. Well done to her, not musical ability by any means just good PR but well done either way
