Cheryl is famous because she's beautiful and this is the proof. Creepy old dudes liked they way she looked 😂 She was still in her teens and they were openly perving out.

Looking back at this, it is cringe. She got through because of her looks and her singing ability had nothing to do with it. She sounds quite nasal.

Geri was so sweet and complimentary to Cheryl and gave her her big shot. Yet when Geri was a judge in X factor Cheryl was very rude and snidely laughed about her and you could tell she didn’t like her on the sly. So much for gratitude

She went on to work solo and worked on her voice and did well for herself our Cheryl did.

"You've got lovely eyes and skin"?! Was that he best comment she could be given in a singing audition? That's so unfair! She should have been judged purely on her voice. Being judged purely on your voice is what usually happens in a singing audition, not necessarily being given a nice compliment and then being put through. I don't want to be cruel, but, her voice was just not good enough and not strong enough. My advice, If she liked music, she should have taken up dancing or if she wanted to be put through for her looks, she should have taken up modelling.

Well people commenting on the looks, she is a singer the looks matter if you are average, but when your voice is absolutely amazing you can even look like a troll, it doesn't matter

Watching these old auditions back it really goes to show the entire industry is about looks and money rather than talent... I've watched this and Kimberly and Sarahs audition too and they are very average. Dont get me wrong, Girls Aloud are pop icons and has some great songs. Its just such a superifical industry.

That older man was creepy to comment on her looks and I was horrified at it. Louis Walsh was a gentleman and professional but that other guy got a boner in his seat. Ugh

How is this such a high quality when it's almost from when Girls Aloud were formed and everyone recorded Popstars on a video player?? Amazing!!

She's a mediocre singer, but I'm not surprised since in pop music world is all about youth, scandals and appearance, not the singing skills. But what's sad the mediocre singers are often the judges for people who are far way better than they them. It's an ironic situation. Anyway she seems to be nice, warm-heart person, so at least she's not "the spoiled diva type".

If she'd auditioned today I doubt she'd have been successful even if her looks wooed the judges.

A lot of people being a bit harsh towards Cheryl here. In her book, she recalls her first audition. She remembers the compliments to her appearance and while flattered, she also admits to being somewhat annoyed and frustrated they were ignoring her singing. Even later in the show closer to the band forming, Geri Halliwell just kept telling her how pretty she was. Cheryl recalls thinking that she didn’t make the trip from Newcastle all the way down to London to have people waxing over her looks. Unfortunately there is an element of truth to the accusations she made into Girls Aloud as eye candy, hence being branded ‘The Fit One’ of the band. Therefore you could argue that Cheryl exemplifies everything wrong with modern music culture, skipping through life on looks and no talent. And getting involved in a punch up with a toilet cleaner in a nightclub a few months later did her no favours. But…….that’s where I’m going to stop and try to defend her a tiny bit. The thing with Cheryl’s voice is that it’s not even THAT bad. She’s not ridiculously out of tune or anything. It’s just her voice isn’t powerful enough for any kind of energetic upbeat music. Her voice is too soft and throaty for powerful or high notes, hence why in Girls Aloud she always struggled against the other girls, even Sarah bless her wasn’t the best singer but she still out sang Cheryl. In my opinion Cheryl’s vocals are completely wrong for the pop music she was always performing. Mezzo sopranos are more suited for quieter and more restrained genres of music. Of course there are exceptions, Ann Wilson of Heart is a mezzo soprano and her primary genre is hard rock. But for the most part mezzo sopranos are more suited to gentler genres, folk, acoustic, world and New Age music like Enya. Cheryl’s biggest problem is she’s in the wrong genre of music.

Nicola and Nadine had the best voices in girls aloud in my opinion!

Tbh I thought her voice was better then than now. Not that she was ever the greatest singer but she had a nice tone on that audition. Having said that if she was trying for X factor now she probably wouldn’t get through the first round. She was lucky because it was for a girl band where image is as important than singing.

Well done, girl 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 YEAH, this was YEARS ago, but her voice has improved since then. Please check out her new music. It's great!
