You state your nitrate level is about zero with the reactor. What was it before the reactor? Has it actually reduced nitrate level or just maintained it at it's starting level? I ask because I don't see any nitrate reduction in my test system at all.
These do work, I used a large reef dynamics bio reactor on a 300 gallon with hair algae issue. You have to have the output of the bio reactor near or over the intake of the skimmer. If you don't have a skimmer don't bother doing it. Need the combo. The Nitrate will go down for sure but it takes months not days. Its not instant. Once the bacteria have establish in the unit its more efficient and nitrates can go from 80 to 5 or so. phosphates are lowed as well. It was on a fowler tank so did not care about phosphates as much. It got rid of the fuel for some hair algae
Do you notice a drop in phosphate? I have very high phosphate in my tank. Just started mine a week ago. Not for sure of level of nitrate. When testing with salifert test kits. I read 0 nitrate and phosphate. When using Hanna ULR it reads 8.0 ppb. I have algae real bad. So I'm sure I have nitrate too.
I noticed a definite drop but then again my fish are in QT so there is more than one reason for that. If you have an algae problem then you have a nutrient problem. Do the following in order to get back to scratch before implementing a new process: 1) Manually tear out as much as you possible can without destroying your coral (if you have any) 2) Introduce 1-2 natural predators like hermits or snails (or fish) 3) Do a series of large water changes to turn the total volume over at least once. Say 50% a day for 3 days.
