I’m 17 and started budgeting and realized I’ve been spending 300 plus dollars on fast food and now I’m meal prepping food my mom buys anyway so I’m saving a ton.
I’m 27… and can say maaaaaan if only I was watching these videos 10 years ago…. Good stuff man!
@@DavonsMedia thank you I’m definitely trying to keep my finances in check and save for college debt free
During covid it was amazing how much more cash we had. It was educational. We still eat out but about 1/2 what we used to.
You’re a rockstar!

I love the Ramsey show. Dave's rant #1 changed my life but I like George Kamel's posts better than the Ramsey show bc he is straight to the point without ads
Balance y'all. If you can eat out and still save/invest and prepare for the future, eat out yo. Personally i meal prep because fitness reasons, but i still enjoy occasional dining out with family.
I also meal prep for fitness reasons but honestly everyone should meal prep for fitness reasons. The savings is just a huge bonus. You feel good about your body AND your wallet. Plus it only makes the occasional restaurant visit so much more special
My wife and I are saving for a down payment on our first house and dining out was always our weakness until we actually did the math. We realized that if we were to just save whatever money we were dining out with we could have our down payment about 6 months faster than if we went to restaurants. 6 MONTHS!
As someone who used to eat out a LOT, I can verify that eating at home is WAY less expensive that eating out. In what bizarre alternate universe is it cheaper to eat out? Don't even get me started on drinks.
Becuase a meal is meat, 2 sides, and a bread. That would cost you about 15 dollars at a grocery store. A meal at a casual restaurant is 15 dollars. So it is a wash go out have something unique and different every night.
However,
But wait what about breakfast and lunch those are meals to.
And now the secret leftovers.
This destroys eating out.
@scotthix2926 What you fail to consider is the price per meal. And I doubt what you just mentioned is just $15.00. There is also tips, taxes, etc.

I think it should be noted that many folks these days think every eatting experience has to be top notch. And so I think people are actually becoming more and more repulsed by the idea of eatting at home. Not me, just something I’ve observed lately
I have a sinking fund for going out. If I do not have funds in the envelope then I wait. It makes me really think about doing things. I have sinking funds for several different things.
Like this idea
Most people see cooking at home for lots of people as a chore, and it is until you cook things you like to eat and involve your family/roommates. Eating out is great for the convenience, but the cost is too high to do it often.
I always question people on the time thing. I mean...yes your cooking for a family but unless you have 10-20 kids it shouldn't add time. And most meals I cook I'm done in an hour. And no thats not frozen pizza. Thats making thai food. Italian. Etc with actualwhole food ingredients. It does not take long to chop veggies. Whereas It's difficult to go to a restaurant in my area in under an hour. Even my closet one at 10 min away. So I called bs on any claims of saving time. Or at least not enough for it to actually matter.
The only way it does is if you do delivery.
@@pdxmusl1510 I totally agree with you!
@pdxmusl1510 The dishes afterwards is always the worst part.
Indeed! I've been doing this far to much over the last six months, and its showing in my belly... Stopping now..
Who spends 13 hours cooking every week? I make a big batch of food and it takes 3 hours. I eat for the work week. Done.
Eating out for every meal I spend about $350/mo. Grocery shopping for every meal I spend about $150/mo
Do you eat one meal per day?
Do you live in Thailand?
My grocery budget is 200 per month
Preparing your own food does take time, but the benefits extend far beyond just your physical health or cost savings. Nobody ever talks about the psychological benefits of basic everyday chores, and nothing is more primal than feeding ourselves. Learn to enjoy self-care, chores, and other tasks the current culture doesn't value.
I love working in my Kitchen and making my own food. It's creative, I get to use some fun tools / techniques, and then I get to eat - perfect.
The amazing part about American, they complain about the inflation blah blah blah, but they go out to eat a lot. They shop a lot they buy expensive cars . The car payment last for seven years😳.
In 3 months I’m at $150 eating out. Hurray!
I don't spend anywhere near $300 per month on eating out for just me as a household of one. I've been on Every Dollar Budget and I average around $75 - 100 per month. I'm pretty sure $3,600 annually is per household.
I like you, George. Also kuddos to the editor. Hubby and I eat out once per week, after church, with friends. It is expensive. We went to Chilli's last week and for the two of us it was $60. (plus a tip!) YIKES!
I recently did a very quick cost analysis for me, my wife, and my stepson. I used my favorite, Subway, as the restaurant. I would STILL spend more on takeout even if I used a BOGO coupon on a single footlong sub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for all 3 of us. And this is the absolute cheapest option I could think of with a decent amount of decent food.
*eats at Costco for the rotisserie chicken*
Meal prep and bringing my own lunch saves thousands per year. It’s worth it!!!
Right?
My direct reports (mostly a few years out of college) are always bewildered when they see me eating leftovers and I tell them I can't afford to eat out at lunch.
6:10 Teetotaler here. I also hate soft drinks. I will stick with (free) water.
It’s really crazy how much a soda costs. I love soda but had to give it up for that reason
I had to go dairy free about 7 years ago and it made eating at home the much better choice. I didn’t even think about the savings but after the first year it was amazing to see the difference. My best advice for meal prep when you’re busy (two jobs myself) is use your food bank aka the freezer and find every type of meal you like that you will eat reheated. If you’re not sure go down the frozen food section and write down all the things that look good. If manufacturers are freezing it you can too. That 8 hours on Sunday then turns into time and money saving in the weeks and months ahead. How many times did you just get takeout because you ran out of time to meal prep? If you had a premade frozen breakfast sandwich and chili your work day meal prep is grab and go.
That “biscuit” cutaway was too funny - literally LOL-ed!
I got super burned out cooking at home. Yes, it's cheaper, but when you're already struggling to find the energy to do the bare minimum, cooking at home can be really hard and depressing, even when you make amazing and simple food that you like.
We get writer's block, but with cooking.
I know what you mean. When I was taking care of my mom who passed away from Alzheimer’s, I had many days where I only had enough energy left to get fast food or to order takeout from a restaurant. Some people are too drained to shop and meal prep for the week.
About 2015 olive garden changed it's cooking methods and preparation.. idk why exactly .. now it's like cafeteria food or panda express compared to how excellent it used to be
All the crap is made in a factory, frozen, and warmed up at olive garden. They don't actually cook
How dare you besmirch the name of Panda
Olive Garden is completely out of their mind with their new prices. I'm done paying $20+ for overcooked noodles in a cheese sauce and frozen breadsticks.

Ouch... Only 3,600 a year? Our credit card breaks down our categories and it said we paid over 7,000 in 2023 eating out (family of 5). It was eye opening.
I review people’s bank statements as part of my job and I agree, $3,600 is way too low.
His numbers are unrealistic. If you go to a sit down resturaunt with a family of 5, it is almost impossible to get for under $100. If you follow his $100 a month, you are getting pizzas, or fast food. Not real dining.
I found a work around. I pay a very expensive wife to cook every weeknight. It comes out to a net savings over funding a Taco Bell worker’s new truck payment for food that should cost half what it does in a fair economy.
I can make a cup of tea cheaper at home than I can buy at a cafe / restaurant. Most restaurants don't make that much on food, they make it on drinks.
Chicken a la soup. Pre heat oven for 10 minutes, while oven heating prepare chicken, put pasta on and cook chicken at the same time, for 15 minutes, halfway through put the soup on.
Went grocery shopping and they would place two of the same thing next to each other but different brands so the price would be different. Pay attention when you pick up foods. Also I love eating out not everyday but here and there it’s part of my happiness and I’m debt free so yea
I feel like I was watching Dora the Explorer 😂
My time is worth more. Unless you have unlimited ability to do as much paid overtime as you want, no. Your time isn't worth more. You aren't an entrepreneur. You are the average salary working getting the same paycheck every week no matter how much you work.
Restaurant coffee 7 dollars
Restaurant breakfast 12 dollars.
Restaurant Lunch 15 dollars.
Restaurant Dinner 20 dollars. 🤣 minus your 8 hour shift.
One way to make eating out cheaper is to make your portions into 2 meals. Most restaurants give you huge portion anyways so it’s hard to finish my plate a lot of times. There’s usually enough for 2 meals.
I think it takes less time to eat in. If you are organized. Factor in the drive and wait times. I think it is quicker to eat at home.
Who the heck is spending 13 hours a week grocery shopping and cooking?! 🤣 Especially when grocery pick-up and air fryers are a thing now. I spend maybe 6 hours a week cooking for a family of 5 if everyone's home all day, every day.
I don't think 13 hours is very far off. Going to 2 grocery stores/week, including travel time, could easily be 3-4 hours. I cook my kids a hot breakfast, and that takes 15 minutes/day. Packing lunches takes 15 minutes / day. Dinner + cleanup takes 45 minutes / day. So that's about 6 hours between Monday and Friday. Weekends you have time to cook longer meals too. I just made an 18 hour brisket that I had to monitor every few hours. It also takes time to do meal planning, organizing the pantry and taking inventory.
As a single person, it might be worth it to just eat out or buy prepared foods. It's difficult to cook for 1 and not waste food. I have a family of 5, and the cost savings/hour scales. Eating out doesn't cost $15, it costs $75. The ingredients cost $25, so saving $50 by cooking for 45 minutes is a good value prop.
@@Joenzinatoranother option to consider if you are single or a busy professional, is to look into those preprepped foods like Factor etc. Of course run costs but it might work for some people to just buy all their meals prepped and ready to eat in packaged portions. Idk I would consider it if I was single.
@@crashtestdummy1972 Yeah, I'm not single though. 5 fully prepared meals per meal gets to be pretty pricy. I usually buy the semi-prepared meals at costco that are family sized.
@@Joenzinator does that help with costs? I've seen those with tacos, salads and such but I've never considered them.
@@crashtestdummy1972 yeah. I think $20-25 is a normal cost of dinner for 5, and those are in that range. There are also marinated meats at Costco that you can heat up in 5 minutes, and then you just have to make a couple sides. It’s maybe slightly more expensive than cooking from scratch, but still 1/3 the cost of ordering takeout.
I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.
Right, the role of advisors can only be overlooked but not denied. I got financially free at the age of 49 with over $1.6m in investment account alone. Unfortunetly, the so called net gain in time saved is far off set by the time spent suffering from the long term dire effects of eating all of that processed food. The best bang for the buck is to eat healthier now to forgo future health issues.
Totally agree. You can pay for healthy food today or pay more money on medical bills tomorrow.
The long term cost is also about health. Even “healthy option” fast food is not great and long term health issues effect the bottom line as well as enjoyment in life

Olive Garden gave us so much food we took most of it home and were eating it for about 3 days. It was a great deal. I don't know how anyone can eat that much at one time.

I’m just frustrated because I watch my money closely and do what the Ramsey team teaches but my income shovel just struggles. I’m just getting tired of working really hard, punching the clock perfectly everyday but not seeing any reward for hard work other than verbal thanks. I’m in very serious high detailed positions, but every job I work at they give very small raises if any and a lot of times I have to put pressure on my bosses to even consider a raise. It’s been like that my last 3 jobs which have been in big corporations. And I just can’t find any job search listed positions to go into that match the skills and talents I have from previous jobs…
You can cook a very delicious, healthy meal with just using an outside griddle in under 10-15 minutes. Add in an air fryer and crockpot then you can definitely make a better tasting and cheaper meal than any restaurant
Obvious money advantages aside, nothing of us getting home and then sharing our day with each other while making supper is great. To replace that with having to run over to a fast food joint, where the workers don't even look you in the eye, would be depressing.
I find the bell chime creepy. It reminds me of the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack.
WTH? $100 a month for a family of 4 to eat out? Where we going McDonalds? If you to a sit down, nice resturaunt. Mom and Dad have a drink, you kids are in their teens and too old for kids menu, and tip, you arent walking out for less than $100. I mean guess a pizza place, but you are really relegating families to eating out once a month. A nice meal every 2 weeks, pizza or a simple meal every week out. I would say for a solid middle class family of 4, out of debt, $400 a month would be more realistic as a goal.
Holddddup. 100 a month for a family of 4??? My brother in Christ, in what alternate universe are groceries that cheap??? I'd believe you if we were talking about half of eating out for groceries or, by your own words and research earlier in the video, a third. Yes, it is cheaper to eat at home, but you're not going to reduce 550 a month of eating out to 100 a month. Maybe to 250, 200, 180 at the lowest end, but not 100.
I never said a family of 4 eats on $100 a month. They still have a grocery budget. I’m saying their eating out budget goes down to $100, meaning they only eat out once or twice a month.
only $3600 a year average? whoopsies
Is a peanut butter sandwich cheaper than a $5.00 value meal? Sure, and I like peanut butter sandwiches, but not as much as that value meal.
Drinks have gotten ridiculous, including non-alcoholic drinks, _the_ exception is McDonald's coffee, especially the senior coffee. I had a double cheeseburger and senior coffee the other day, filling and just over $3.00 total, cant beat that. Also, people like my mom frequently only eat one or two meals a day.

Often, eating fast food is, indeed, cheaper than eating healthy at home (unless you do actually eat rice and beans, beans and rice). However, it is only cheaper in the short run. The health costs of long-term consumption of fast food is high. So yes, Taco Bueno can make a darn good burrito for cheap, but those hospital bills sure add up, too.
That's not true. Unless you are fooled into thinking eating "healthy" food can only be done by eating super-expesive food. A family can easily eat healthy just shopping at Aldi's.
@@danh2716 - When an apple costs more than a hamburger, we have an issue. But I think that you missed the point that it is actually not cheaper anyway. (We do not eat fast food at all anymore, though, and we feel so much better without all that garbage in us.)
@darrelllee2107 Silly and untrue argument. A quick search of Walmart website shows a 3lb bag (usually about 6 or 7) of Gala apples costs $3.66. A quick Google says the average cost of one McDonald's cheeseburger is $2.66. Further, Walmart says a head of broccoli is $1.78 a pound. So a person could start a healthy lunch with an apple and a qtr pound of broccoli (which is more than a serving) for about a dollar, and still have over a buck and a half to add some protein and a bit of carbs. And that's JUST compared to the nastiest, cheapest cheeseburger humanity has ever attempted to create. No fries, no softdrink, etc.
I’m too cheap. lol.
