Was welding some cast iron last week, stick…first time welding cast for anything other than a practice coupon…got some ni-rods and preheated it (when he says preheat, he’s not kidding, preheated it to 800 degrees) Came out really nice though, but damn those ni-rods go quick, and aren’t cheap…
Fuck yeah!! Been wondering if any of my fellow welders have done reactions to our field according to "Hollywood." I'm so glad someone drew my attention here. I loved it!! I just noticed one mistake at 20:45 when you said "DC current". Take a listen again and you'll hear he's using AC.
Ha ha. This is great. For Flashdance, I don't understand why they didn't go to some actual mills and see what was going on. It was shot in Pittsburgh after all.
3:42 I do MIG and stick at college. Instead of requiring us to wear respirators each one of the welding bays has an overhead extractor. The only problems, of course, are they're expensive. £600 for each individual extraction tube. They're also very loud, especially when the workshop is busy and you've got 15-20 extractors going at the same time.
We also got those overhead extractors in the colleges out in Canada they don’t require the respirator but every instructor heavily recommends you still where it
Loved this diversion from the shop. For what it’s worth, in the Under Siege scene, Seagal is using the draining paint thinner can to delay the detonation. Notice that he puts the grenade under the leaking can.
That first scene from flash dance reminds me of when my helper handed me a wet 7018 rod back in 2018. I just kept tapping until he asked what was wrong. I should have checked that he pulled the supply from the warmer, not the ones laying on the flatbed. So it was my fault. We didn't make that mistake again, but we both had a great laugh about it 😂
The worst welding/fabrication scene in a movie that i saw was in the second marvel black panther movie. A random girl needs to design and build a ironman-like suit and it show scene of a terrible oxy-acetylene torch cut and metal scraps falling to the floor. Then comes the final result, a gleaming sparkling suit perfectly designed and built
Not sure how I got here, but I've just been reminded how much I enjoyed working with the oxy acetylene torch in shop class. My experience with stick welding never got past the sparky 'intro to Flashdance' level, heh. Good times!
Female welder with ADD here. Writing down instructions helps, as well as listening to music so I’m not distracted. Also, if you have long hair, you have to keep it up for safety reasons. Don’t want it caught in machinery.
Very nice video today Tay and team. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friends. Weld on. Fab on. Keep making. God bless.
A bronze nickle alloy is the standard for welding cast iron now. Larger shops use PAPRs for their welders instead of respirators. The reason why is they perform better and saves time for employees from having to shave during the shift also allows people with religious grooming requirements such as a full beard to work in the industry. Also, people with long hair are required to tie it up because of grinders that welders use all the time. I person have a long beard and long hair. I stuff my beard down my shirt and have my hair tied back
The Supra wireframe makes sense when you realize the view is from under the rear of the car. Google translate can't decide if the lovebug crew helmets say "Duanwu" or "The soup comes out".
I also noticed the scene from flash dance as they use that clip in the British movie "the full Monty", I laugh at the comment about her 'mix' being wrong, 'mix' in stick welding made me laugh
The undersiege grenade scene was legit, the reason he stabbed a hole in the jug was to delay, as it pours out it gets lighter therefore at some point the grenade spring will overcome the weight and BOOM! I don't know why I had this video pop up on the main screen but just realized it's 2y old 😂

you missed 22:28 ... the torch had NO feather! it was just a whoosh of flame, WAYYYYY out of setting! all he's going to do with that torch is heat up the metal...
We used buckets of sand heated up to about 800 degrees in a lucifer oven. The moment i finish my weld a couple guys would bury it with the hot sand and just let it cool real slow. If you let it cool in the air the cast would just crack right next to the new weld.
Far be it from me to come to the defence of a Steven Seagall movie but if the pin is pulled on a grenade, it doesn’t ignite until after the lever is released. He propped it under the can so until the weight of the can decreases enough that the spring in the grenade can lift, the ignition process won’t have started.
It's like people using firearms or are driving in movies. It's absolutely unreslistic. My guess is, that the producers and directors have people that do stuff like that for them, so they don't know how it's actually done. Btw: 9:16 I like how you hold that filler rod. That way, you can ad more whitout changing grip. you can rest your wrist very stable and let the tumb, index- ringfinger and pinky do the job. It is rare to see that done properly. It's not just a small detail, this makes a real difference, especially when welding aluminium.
Weld scene I'd love to see a reaction to is Pacific Rim, when he's working as a welder on the Wall Of Life. I... honestly can't figure out how his rig is supposed to work.
you CAN look directly at the sun ALL DAY LONG if you start at sunrise (the curvature of the Earth bends the light enough that your eyes can look directly at it and 'warm up' your eyes to brighter light). Believe me I have done it when I went to the eclipse festival. NO spots :)
I think he the can of paint thinner was holding down the safety level until it drained and became light enough for the safety level spring to overcome. Why else would you punch a hole in the can?
@@vittocrazi That too. I was referring to why the explosive took so long. Using the punchered can as a timing device. He mentioned the standard time length to a grenade to explode. Like the drip triggerthe Australians use in Gallipoli during WW1

Not a long time, really. And in the context of an "indie" Racing mechanic team It was effectively stick or torch. Just like steroids were invented in 1935, but doping started about 1950.

Those are nice in a shop, but on a construction site no one will set up such a monster.
Yeah in my college the extractors are like 650-750£ and a good MIG/MAG welder is around 7000£
those vents are not a replacement for respirators, they’re an addition

Do the movie Aliens next time
At 10:15 I would add brass filler rod to be used with oxy acetlyeen or even with tig.
That Meco OA torch in The Love Bug was old when that movie was young. Great prop work though.
I saw one movie where they jammed some sparklers in a stinger and called it a day. LOL Hi tech!

So not all supras came with a 2jz motor. The 7mgte was far more common to be find in a typical supra engine bay and they aren't the best motors.
