I made my choice 2 years ago when I went with the Banu MM and the Defender combo. I see the MM as the 890 Jump for traders, a luxury centerpiece to being an interstellar merchant. I am hoping we can one day hire Banu NPC's and I'd like to have a couple on my crew.
The Hull C is all about transporting materials through the supply chain. The MM sells finished products and sells out of the ship, so you can set up sites to sell contraband and high value goods. Large scale org battles are sure to pay for munitions from a store that comes to them.
Same and as I only paid 250 (Warden CCU) for it I feel it was a great investment, and I would like to see whole trade imperiums being built on ships and merchant types. Are you the bulk seller that only sells to trade station in space, or maybe the local trader landing at remote outpost being the yearly thing people are waiting for.
@@abram730 I agree that the Hull series are for cargo hauling orgs where the MM is more for the freelance merchant or small guild of traders who set up kiosks in the org mothership.
entZEROspawn I did the same from an 85x (through some ship that I no longer remember). I still believe that it’s the best deal at $250 or less that has ever been in the game.

That's the video I've been waiting for. Last anniversary sale I got a CCU to the BMM from Aquila. Then I got an LTI Fortuna. Then I upgraded the Fortuna to a Corsair. Now all I need is the CCU From Corsair to Aquila. (but the Corsair loaners let me fly an Aquila for the next year or two, rather than be stuck with a starfarer loaner for the BMM.) I was at the mall the other day and realized that from the midpoint of the mall to the end of the corridor would all fit inside the BMM (not counting the shops) It's a freaking Mall in space. I'm thinking of naming mine The Darth Mall

until you run into a modified Hull that has guns instead of cargo containers, just like the Hull C "discreet" or you have the military models with extra weapons, like the R4M or the R5M
Nice video, Law. Not enough people are doing video commentary on these "boring" ships. These are the ships I think I will be spending most of my time with, and you're comparisons are spot on with the things I will be concerned about in a hauler.
I wish you'd be put in the spotlight by the devs. You explain everything loud and clear, objectively and you manage to not sound like a geek. Great quality.
It'll be nice to see if these cargo ships carries container pods. Players can buy container pods and make their own base on any planet suited to their taste. Including decorations, security cameras, pool tables, bar, futuristic beds where Players can choose to spawn in after a battle, etc. Also whatever ships Players buy may be stored there.
One thing that's not talked about much is the Q ships. IRL they were disguised as defenseless cargo ships but actually had a lot of guns on them. CR himslef already confirmed that this will be a thing for the Hull C+. specially since the military uses these. I think that will be a good deterrent
yup..dummy cargo pods that open up to cans of whoop ass to ambush pirates with, sounds good. The vid author totally ignores that they will be modules that replace cargo space....Most players will be running a few of these pop out modules because we already know how much a grief fest open play will be from experience with Elite. This will allow a Hull C or D to totally blow a Merchantman to pieces with enough investment.
Something that I dont think was mentioned about the Merchantman in regards to how fast you can travel in a fleet - The Defender was said to have some kind of companion interaction with the BMM. Its sounding more and more like the Defenders are able to dock to it in order to piggyback on the BMM's faster quantum speed from its larger drive. The tail thing that hangs down under the ship when its in flight seems to hint that this may act as an attachment point.
The Hull C has such an awesome design that even though its an unlikely feature, I wish we could customize ships to make them function not like what they were originally built for. Just like the Millennium Falcon originally being a freight ship, I just want to turn the Hull C into a blockade Runner type ship, remove the extending cargo arms and weld the two halfs together and add more thrusters around the ship to make it more agile and add more guns to it
Great video! I have a BMM/Defender, and don't ever plan on letting it go. However, I just wanted to point out that the Endeavor can hold 500 cargo in the Command Module, and the hangar bay can hold 4500 more (at half capacity, so potentially more?) "you’d be able to add roughly 4500 additional SCU of cargo to the ship if you used half of the available space in the Landing Bay (with the remaining space being used to enable a Cutlass to land/take-off with that cargo.)" MM can land on planet, so there's that advantage. Hull C can't. Endeavor's Command module can bring down 500 SCU at a time. I also like how much more functional capability the Endeavor has.
Bravo. As usual, superb quality! I am so tempted by the Merchantman, even as a pirate, I'm sure it will be a very versatile tool if used correctly. Edit: typo
I want my original alien blockade runner....having a feeling it's going to be a streamlined origin looking pleasure cruise ship and get melted for something else.
I just imagine a big org rolling up with a HULL D or E and a bunch of escort fighters to a planet, then a swarm of smaller cargo ships start bringing cargo in or out from atmosphere and during all this an opposing org of pirates attack and a huge fight breaks out and people join in to try and grab all the cargo floating around in space. Would be a sight to behold.
The biggest thing that bothers me about the Hull series is the huge retro thrusters located at the front of the ship. Just like riding a bike, you don't slam on the front break when all the weight is behind the point of pressure or you end up sideways and balled up in the street. The thrust reverses on the Hull series needs to be behind the center of mass at the back of the ship to prevent from breaking the whole ship in half under it own weight and momentum when trying to slow down.
Something many might forget is that the cargo hold the banu have, might also be used for rental shops inside. So the actually used cargo for the owner of the ship could be a lot less then you might think. Not sure how many rental shops you can have in the banu, but say if each shop has 600 storage units, your personal storage isn't that high to haul cargo. Hull-c is strictly cargo hauling while banu gives the owner more of an option what they want to do.
That option to have potential buyers come directly to your ship to browse and make purchases can come in quite handy if you're dealing with cargo that might otherwise be frowned upon by local authorities.
I used to want the Hull C really badly because I want to specialize in trading. But then I went over the MM again and suddenly it clicked so to say. As the ship will more or less be my home in the verse the sacrifice in cargo capacity seem really negligible when you think of all the extras the MM has to offer over the Hull. When I realized this the choice became really easy. I see the Hull series as more of an asset to organisations and not as a ship that is meant to be an indiviual's focus if you know what I mean. I go for the MM and a Carrack. These two basically represent everything I'll ever need in the verse... besides upgrades... and lots of cash^^
auspi ciously you can, sort of. While you can certainly fly them alone, it'll make you less efficient doing so. But you'll be able to use computer blades to automate some turrets to AI and hire NPC to be on your crew. Human players are likely to be more efficient but hey, train your NPC crew and they'll get getter and better
thing is, in a fair comparison the BMM would be stacked up against the Hull D or even Hull E because the BMM is ~ 500 USD, thats more than twice of the price of the Hull c, 150 USD over the Hull D and 150USD under the Hull E and well.. compared to the Hull D the BMM overall is worse, it has 1/6 of the cargo capacity and the larger Hull D has most likely similar space for the crew compared to a BMM (its a over 200m long ship)
Larger ships will probably only run small/cheap cost goods that are used in bulk, while high cost goods will most likely be run by smaller trade ships like freelancer Max’s, I’d rather spread 50 million of goods around 10 ships then 50 million of goods in one. (Plus since amount of goods + profit margin will make up for high cost goods+ profit it just doesn’t make since for people to run high risk, pirates will want the easy to move stuff then the bulk stuff. )
There's an advantage to have the most common ship in the verse. If you are smuggling. That's when you want to hide in plain sight, join a convoy of NPC Hull C's and slip through the net in anonymity.
hope they come out with interior turrent for ships like these. you know a single or double size one gun that is automated only that you have to break before proceeding
I think both vessels could be used pretty well in conjunction of each other Especially for a group of players who will prefer to be merchants and tradesmen compared to wanting to be military faction
I very much doubt the shields don't cover the cargo, that would be INSANE. Although, in the case, exposed cargo helps vs pirates who want as much cargo off you as possible...so shooting it also means not shooting that area of your ship and less to defend.
just imagine wandering bazar with 3 or more merchantmans as main traiding zone, 890 jump for high end deals, a bunch of cargo ships like freelancer, caterpillar, ect. A starfarer for refueling the bazar and a bunch of escort/multi-role ships for security
I bought a Hull C early on and am looking forward to hauling with her, love the fold out gantries for the cargo. ...but then I also have a ccu for it for when i am done playing and want to get serious :) The Merchantman is a very interesting ship.
Can’t wait for my BMM. Got mine as CCU from my Aquila in the Explorer magapack. For a $40 CCU it was a no brainer and meant I got it for near on original price :D
Tots forgot about the fact that you can rent out space in the Merchantman and honestly, I’m super excited for it now. The more I hear about the merchantman the more excited I get about it. And acing to hire security to manage comers and goes, this ship has so much gameplay potential. There obviously ships for different people but I think the merchant man just has more gameplay opportunities. The Hull C is what you bring out of you have a limited amount of time to play or your trying to grind money.
Expect the Hull-C to go up in price though: it should go on sale again end of year when.. it supposedly, will become flyable. Also: see Grey Market: BMM for $265 often, via the now gone Vanguard/Redeemer 0$ CCU.
I think you said it when you described the Hull-C as the efficient min-maxer's ship... The MM is more about the lifestyle of trading, the adventures and stories along the way. I own neither atm.
I feel like merchantman might be the better ship since even though it has a lower cargo hold than the hull c, people will actually fear it rather than seeing a huge money pinata.
Grabbed a Hull C way back and have a ccu from a Caterpiller to BMM as a backup, can't wait to see how well they make it, the only real thing is the crew size 4 vs 8
I never saw it that way with the day to day. Sounds like much more fun to role play a Merchant Man. Also what mysterious deals and disasters await you within the belly of the bazaar? I bet these vehicles have a mystique to poor far flung outposts where kids gaze up at the potential of life elsewhere.
i went with a Hull B and can't wait until docking is implemented so they can be built. The shield tech will cause cargo to not be protected, as it will wrap around the ship armor and not the entire ship. Since the armor will not be in the middle section the cargo will be exposed.
Grievers have some potential as well! I can imagine a bounty system being in place so these people can be brought to justice..! Attack a freight ship..? Ok, run you psycho!
Hopefully after this video I will have decided if i want the bmm or not. I currently have a caterpillar with 10 years insurance i could upgrade for $55 and I want to haul cargo but be able to land on planets so the large Hulls aren't my thing
Cant wait for my merchant man to be in game. I bought it cheaper so I could sell it for what it will inevitably later, but the more I see about it the more I'll end up keeping it.
It's going to be fun to find out. Way back when, during an interview with the artist who was working on the defender, he said that they're going to try and create some kind of synergy between the two ships. But what form that's going to take was still being debated on. It sounds like they're going to try and push for some kind of ability for the two ships to dock in some way, maybe even like how the Merlin docks with a Connie, but in the end nothing's definite at this time. I'm hoping that we'll get some more info on this when the defender's released in 3.7
Did you see the dev talk where they said that the hull c had to almost be tripled in size to make room for the physics grid? I can't wait until i can fly mine, i think this size increase will also mean that the price will increase
The Hull C, in my opinion, would only be better in a perfect world. Between constant pirate attacks damaging or stealing the cargo, and the costs for escorts, It may end up costing more. Besides, that Bazaar would be a great money maker.
Great work.! Always enjoy your content. The only thing that I don't like is what your views are with the SRV. I really don't think that ships marketed and sold with the ability to land on planets should now need to hire another ship to aid with that. Is a HUGE slap in the face to backers, like myself, who have contributed significantly.
I hope we see npc traders one day. Would be cool as a law abiding citizen to come across a pirate cargo ship with fighters protecting it and if you capture the ship you get loot
With as little as we know about the BMM, other than what's concrete about it, like its role and fluff, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets even bigger and can carry more cargo by the time we actually get our hands on it. I'm really not a fan of the Kraken being able to carry as much cargo as it, AND have landing pads, personally. I really hope it gets more than 1 remote turret, too, but the time it comes out. I'm very curious to see what size shield generator it gets, my money is on either two Large, or one Capital, since the Banu do like to have the best stuff. Regardless, I absolutely love the BMM, and I was lucky to buy mine when I did, since I got it the last time it was available before the price increase :)
I did find out something interesting when researching the BMM. it's 3584 cargo capacity was measured in Freight units and not SCU's like it's currently being listed as on the ship matrix. So when they actually make it, that number is either going to be greatly nerfed, or the ship is going to have to be upgraded to capital class in size in order to accommodate for carrying that much cargo. I'm hoping they end up making it bigger so it can be more of a competitor to the Privateer. Either way, it'll be interesting to see which way they end up going with it.
@@lawofthewestgaming Wow, I did not know that. I'm with you, I hope they make it bigger. Every time we've gotten news about the BMM it seems that it keeps getting bigger, so I think that's the way its going to go. Something tells me it's going to be closer to $600 when we finally get our hands on it
Aren't those cargo amounts not from before the cargo update? Updated values seem to be 1/4 of previous values (ones you mention in the video). Might want to check on that.
Not available yet. New Babbage in 3.10 is showing Avionic packages with 4 AI drives. Meaning you can have 4 AI gunners on a ship. But as for AI crew it’s not available yet or will be , probably for the next year. It’s probably going to be at least 4.0 until we see AI gunners. 5.0 until AI crew.
So in conclusion, IF one is ONLY into hauling and doesn't want the smaller crew size of the smaller hull series or bigger capacity of the larger, then Hull C is the right choice, otherwise the Merchantman is better in pretty much every aspect, which is better in every regard except a bit less cargo space.. but since it CAN land and source it's cargo from planetside locations where it's probably cheaper than stocking up from a station so the difference in how much they make from a single run might not be very different + however much you can make from the onboard market. And for both i find the "need to hire ai crew" argument a bit on the "ok.. but, economy is what the ships do." side, you already make the money to pay them just using the ship, and you likely don't need as many specialized, well trained and expensive NPCs as you would if you hired NPCs to crew a combat vessel where it's a matter of life or death, and there's no inherent income from just flying the ships. So generally for ships that just need everyday workers and which purpose is to make money, the "need to hire a crew" is less of an issue. And if you asked a friend, someone in ones org or just some bored strangers "hey, would you like to go on (unpaid/underpaid) adventures in my Hull-C" or "hey, would you like to go on (unpaid/underpaid) adventures in my Merchantman", guess what most people would pick.
Hull-C looks bad-ass, at least in concept. Let’s hope it keeps that design. Not sure what the hype is about some people have about the MM with its floating elevators and stuff but then I’m not much into alien ships anyway.
i cant find any appeal in the Hull C tbh, its just to limited to be of any use other than high capacity cargo hauling, which might be something for a certain type of ppl, but surely not everyones cup of tea. either way its nice there will be so much variation
RS should make a freighter to junction space station to their planet. With the amount of cargo a hull series can bring in one time, the station will maybe not be able to store much if there is multiple hull. Small transport will just not be sufficient to unload the station n time, so a barge dedicated for atmospheric entries with huge load of cargo, no or small weapon etc would do the job
I own both but honestly I only bought the Hull C because it was SUPPOSED to be the smuggling profession ship, which is clearly is not. So I'll probably get rid of it at some point.

Can you man these ships by yourself? Id like to get a big ship like this but I rarely play when anyone else plays.
auspi ciously you can, sort of. While you can certainly fly them alone, it'll make you less efficient doing so. But you'll be able to use computer blades to automate some turrets to AI and hire NPC to be on your crew. Human players are likely to be more efficient but hey, train your NPC crew and they'll get getter and better
thing is, in a fair comparison the BMM would be stacked up against the Hull D or even Hull E
because the BMM is ~ 500 USD, thats more than twice of the price of the Hull c, 150 USD over the Hull D and 150USD under the Hull E
and well.. compared to the Hull D the BMM overall is worse, it has 1/6 of the cargo capacity and the larger Hull D has most likely similar space for the crew compared to a BMM
(its a over 200m long ship)
I do find it appealing that the BMM could function as a home, but one that offers great versatility. The ultimate Recreational Vehicle (RV).
Great! Piracy target research vid.
wow! My Freelancer Max kind of looks like hauling crumbs of bread with these two options hauling 1,000s of LOAVES of bread. Tough market.
With the Hull C supposedly coming out soon, I'm here to see what the differences are between what's mentioned here and what we end up with this year.
Wildly different lol
hope they come out with interior turrent for ships like these. you know a single or double size one gun that is automated only that you have to break before proceeding
I think both vessels could be used pretty well in conjunction of each other Especially for a group of players who will prefer to be merchants and tradesmen compared to wanting to be military faction
The Banu Merchantman is alien technology, that's mean it is hard to find spare parts and they are expensive...
The Merchantman can use nearly any part from any race, its interchangeable.
I bought a Hull C early on and am looking forward to hauling with her, love the fold out gantries for the cargo.
...but then I also have a ccu for it for when i am done playing and want to get serious :)
The Merchantman is a very interesting ship.
Can’t wait for my BMM. Got mine as CCU from my Aquila in the Explorer magapack. For a $40 CCU it was a no brainer and meant I got it for near on original price :D
I wish the Hull series has a module that changed the fold out cargo arms for internal cargo bays.
The Hull C sounds very much like a fleet-based supply ship, to me. Or, you know, loot-a-holic orgs.
i wonder if adding defense drones when they bring drones to the game would be something worth adding to these larger cargo and mining ships.
Great comparison!
Im wondering if there is the opertunity to expand on the catapiller design,by increasing its overall size and hull capacity,
I miss the blockade runner vision of the Merchantman, something fast, that you do not want to be in front of
I think you said it when you described the Hull-C as the efficient min-maxer's ship... The MM is more about the lifestyle of trading, the adventures and stories along the way. I own neither atm.
My biggest question, with the hull series ships you can go through the spine, but with the Hull E, can I drive a nova tank down the spine?
I feel like merchantman might be the better ship since even though it has a lower cargo hold than the hull c, people will actually fear it rather than seeing a huge money pinata.
Grabbed a Hull C way back and have a ccu from a Caterpiller to BMM as a backup, can't wait to see how well they make it, the only real thing is the crew size 4 vs 8
how would you land this thing in game
I also hope the artillery on the BMM is amazing and something other ships can choose to use. An artillery fleet doctrine could be really cool
Based on the Defender, it might not be able to give its weapons to human or other non-Banu ships
Awesome! Thank you for that great comparison!
Hull series need fighter docking points, not enough to make it a pocket carrier, but a couple would be nice.
So I imagine Banu kiosks being guarded by mercenaries outfittted with UEC exo suits mounted with size 1 ship weapons. Because best of the best.
i went with a Hull B and can't wait until docking is implemented so they can be built. The shield tech will cause cargo to not be protected, as it will wrap around the ship armor and not the entire ship. Since the armor will not be in the middle section the cargo will be exposed.
it was confirmed that the cargo is behind shields on the Hull series
@@IronPhysik Great!!!
Hull-C makers I have two words for you. ... Cargo turrets.
Two more words. Any. Size.
Get on it.
i hope the merchantman has a Q-drive as capable if not more capable than the hammerhead.
Thanks Law
Banu Interiors feel very much akin to the DCEU kryptonian tech. Just a thought.
Cant wait for my merchant man to be in game. I bought it cheaper so I could sell it for what it will inevitably later, but the more I see about it the more I'll end up keeping it.
We don't really know if the Merchantman has a hanger as of yet.
I wonder if it will? Would make sense, considering the Defender.
A cultured man of the internet with good taste goes all the way Banu!
I would never trade my sexy Banu for anything else....
Banu! Give it to me now!
Something tells me it's going to be closer to $600 when we finally get our hands on it
As usual - Excellent !
Aren't those cargo amounts not from before the cargo update? Updated values seem to be 1/4 of previous values (ones you mention in the video). Might want to check on that.
I keep hearing references to "hiring AI crew". Where are they? How do you do it?
I don't believe its available yet.
I can't wait to see the defender i have a BMM in my hanger, Just waiting for it to come to the verse and be a wicked trader ship
I own both but honestly I only bought the Hull C because it was SUPPOSED to be the smuggling profession ship, which is clearly is not. So I'll probably get rid of it at some point.
Well if you want to "get rid of it" you could make a kind donation to me :)
Will the hull C be able to carry anything while folded or have some type of small item cargo hold?
Fuck Yeah. Loved the vid as always❤️
I can't wait to be flying around in a hull c with my friends
Great video with good valid points, thank you.
Love your reviews! so when are you doing one for the Starfarer?
Thanks, and it's going to most likely be some time after the next Intergalactic Aerospace Expo convention.
The HULL C won't be able to leave atmo. When empty?
i chose a Hull B for more solo ops. if i end up loving it and wanting more then i will bite the bullet and hire a full crew
