    I'm surprised it took 9 generations for us to finally get a proper Mimic Mon. Voltorb and Foongus filled a similar niche, but this is the first time we've seen something mimicking a treasure chest instead of a Pokeball. Plus the 999 thing could be a neat reference to how so many old school RPG's would cap money and other things at 999 due to quirks in how programming worked back then.

    The design also seems inspired by the Gingerbread Man. Just look at its shape. It very much looks like a grey gingerbread man cookie.
    But more than that, it also plays into the lore provided by the reveal video. In Paldea, trainers have only ever caught Gimmighoul in its Chest form. That's because in its Roaming form, Gimmighoul runs away when approached. Trainers in Paldea very literally cannot catch them.
    So... "You can't catch me-I'm the Gingerbread Man".

    Obviously there's the fact that its name sounds like "gimme gold" and "ghoul", but the "Gimmigh" part sounds like "Mimic", which are classic RPG enemies that pretend to be treasure chests before clamping their jaws onto you, and the Chest Form just straight up being a Mimic.

    @dracone4370 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    I think Gimmighoul is also inspired by mimics and Spanish Dubloons as well. The coins might be modeled on Spanish Dubloons, which were made of gold and often depicted as part of a pirate's treasure. Dubloons, Pieces of 8, Pieces of 9, and pieces of 12 are all gold coins, and their production was all done in the area the region takes place in; pieces of nine and pieces of eight were commonly made all over Europe, look up how they got their names, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. But Dubloons are special; they are a type of gold coin tied explicitly to Spain, which is why they are often referred to as Spanish Dubloons, along with the monikers of Gold Dubloons and just Dubloons.
    And on the subject of Eldarado, it is believed the myth actually spun out from a practice the Spanish explorers observed; they watched the act of Eldaraho, the "man of gold," which was actually just a holy man getting naked and covering his entire body in gold powder and dust then diving into a sacred lake to wash it all off and have the gold settle at the bottom of the lake. The Spanish were perplexed, and what they thought was justifiably angry, at the practice because they saw a whole mess of gold that was confirmed to be at the bottom of a lake but couldn't get to it because of how deep the water was. So eventually, the Spanish reasoned if there was a "Man of Gold," they must have gotten the idea from a city of Gold, which is where Eldarado comes in; eventually, it was said to be part of a set of 7 cities of gold; there's actually an old animated series called the Cities of Gold, I've only ever seen it's op, but it seems to have been made back in the 1970s or 1980s, but I don't have any idea where the animation studio that produced is/was situated, but I think it would be funny if a Spanish animation house made a cartoon on the concept of the Cities of Gold.

    I am honestly waiting for it to be like hunting the cells for Zygarde in Sun and Moon, I am absolutely betting on Gimmighoul having an evolution and I really want it to be a pirate treasure ghost.
    On the flipside, I was waiting for a mimic pokemon with a pirate chest, but Yamask already had a variant last gen, would be too much to have two back to back... Not gonna make me stop wanting it tho, a Yamask with a golden pendant would not look bad at all.

    if you look at it's eyes, it looks like there are "C"s on the inside, and two lines between the eyes (covalent bond), diamonds are made of Carbon, which has the chemical symbol of C, so maybe it also references that, since diamonds go with gold.

    I don't think it's much of a curse, more like a compelling command from Gimmighoul. I remember that one episode from Sun & Moon where kiawe touched the shovel of a sandyghast, and he began to dig up sand around the Pokémon. So, I'm thinking it's the same thing with Gimmighoul, where when you find a special coin that the Pokémon loves, you're compelled to find more. Especially since apparently it also gives you the ability to find said coins, only to give them to Gimmighoul.

    It's odd they specifically mentioned 999 in the reveal. I wonder if they need 999 coins to evolve.
    Or maybe, Gimmighoul is #999 in Nat dex? Since we are likely hitting 1000 Pokemon up to this point, I won't be surprised if the purposely made a Pokemon related to that number.

    To add to the dowsing idea, one of the "gimmicks" as far as using/finding items was the Dowsing Machine in the Pokétch (4th Generation and HGSS). It didn't use the dowsing rods, obviously, but the idea was exactly the same, really.
