The Warriors surprised me the most. Bot with their new arena and success on the court I guess it makes sense. The other thing that surprised me was the difference between the baseball teams in the same market. The Cubs , Dodgers and Yanks are worth way more than the Sox, Angels and Mets. But then the Sox, Angels and Mets have been poorly run for decades.
How close the 25 MLB teams were to the NHL. But Gary did sell the Coyotes (sorry AZ) for $1.3 billion. And with the Senators being sold for over $1 billion, I think that highlights the floor for the NHL. Would've also expected the Bruins, Maple Leafs, and Blackhawks to be farther out in front of the pack of NHL clubs.
For a team that hasn't won a Super Bowl since Bill Clinton was president (his first term even!), the Cowboys' value seems vastly overinflated. I guess AT&T stadium has a lot to do with it.
Your point about the NHL having more Canadian teams is only somewhat correct. The NFL is the only one of the "Top Five" without a Canadian team. The other three all have Canadian franchises (MLB Blue Jays, NBA Raptors, MLS Whitecaps, Toronto FC and CF Montreal).
While I don’t consider myself a huge sports fan, I’m fascinated by the business of sports, so I really enjoy this kind of stuff. I recently discovered Brodie, and I find myself watching most of his videos.
players union too strong. it could also potentially surpress winning for the big market teams. MLB ratings are run by 6 to 8 clubs and they need some big markets to have WS potential
@@samelmudirThey may start to finally see the light if the Dodgers and Yankees keep getting everyone and there is less and less competitive balance. At some point it will implode. More and more teams will start to be in finical trouble ie Rays and As’
Brodie, I said this before, go look at some of the MLB team's payrolls. Some of them are BELOW the NHL salary cap floor. It's truly atrocious how bad the MLB has become. They need a full-season lockout to institute a salary cap/floor, or else, many MLB teams will become unwatchable, leeching off the "haves" of the MLB.
The NHL is showing why MLB needs a hard Salary cap and floor system. It is a much more competitive league. Why do baseball fans need to see the Braves, Giants, Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Yankees win every year? (Because they have the most money) That isn't fair to all of the other MLB teams.
Do you see the Reds, Rockies, Brewers, Marlins, Pirates, and the White Sox spending money every year like the yankees and dodgers do? MLB needs a spending floor. Teams that don't spend money generally don't attract top players
Salary Caps allow owners to be cheap and not pay top $ for top talent. Why shouldn’t an owner be allowed to spend what he wants on players? Thats how the very successful EPL works in England.
Outside of the big six (City, United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Chelsea) you’re exactly right. Even in Europe, there’s massive gaps in leagues like France and Germany in terms of quality between the top and bottom.
This is largely because the MLS is a closed league in the USA. Relegation has a significant effect on valuations because your revenue can drop drastically in any given year based off performance. That’s why Madrid & those teams were trying to established a relegation free super league. So much of revenue in footy is based off actual performance and that’s not so good for an owner/team’s value. Also domestically British teams won’t have access to the huge media conglomerates in the USA in the same way MLS or any American sports team does.
The valuation of the NBA teams nearly doubled the day Steve Ballmer pulled some of his Microsoft money from his couch and paid $2bil for the Clippers when the consensus value and sale would be $1.2bil. And when the Washington NFL team sold for +$6bil for a franchise that has the worse stadium in the league and run into the ground by Dan Snyder for 20 years, it makes the well run franchises worth more.
The Redskins are in the Washington DC area. It's like four of the five richest counties in the country surround it. I'm surprised they're not worth more.
I grew up in Dallas, so my Cowboys fandom comes honestly. That said, I’m always perplexed why so many with no connection to the city adopt a team that fails at every turn.
Remember folks, valuations are estimates based on multiple factors incluidng the brand itself, Assets + Operations and Projected revenues + potential sponsorships. Therefore large market teams (metro population and/or media markets) will typically have higher valuations. What's more interesting is seeing a team like Dallas which is not a top 5 media market but has built a brand as "America's Team" and that's reflected in it's valuation
As a white Sox fan And I know this is sac religious to empathize But our Chicago sport team owners take advantage of us As much as i can say nothing goes right for us lately as Sox fan and find it cringe to find a silver lining pat on back Rest of Chicago fans can see why we don’t go unless team is winning into September Bulls fans which Sox fans fall into are over loyal Mediocre crap of a franchise Jerry don’t care ! None of these owners care about fans ! Its fans fault though for supporting these teams too much through the muck! It’s endless crap by no accident !
@@brodiebrazilLocal TV deals are why MLB is so screwed up in the first place. ALL TV money should be put into one pot like the NFL. Local deals should be included in that otherwise Otherwise MLB is going to fall apart and lose fans even quicker.
Soccer is gaining popularity in North America. When I was a kid growing up in the Toronto area, it was hockey, football, and baseball that were the three most popular sports by far. Now, they've converted a lot of football fields into a number of small soccer fields for little kids - boys and girls. MLS attendance is apparently growing too, According to SI, In 2024, Atlanta averaged over 49K per game, Charlotte 35K, New England 30K, etc. Colorado was the lowest at 15K.
Jimm from Chicago….Hi Brody….Love the show!…..Still love my sports but I am totally locked out of going to live events….. ….With the streaming revenues and blackouts in certain sports….I rely on my I-pad late at night for highlights from major sport events.on u-tube..in the meantime these franchises are worth billions….Brodie ….love your knowledge and talent!!!😊😊😊
Brody, I'm shocked you haven't mentioned anything about your most beloved AZ Coyotes. In just a few months, the former Coyotes value shot up from $675 million to $1.2 billion, a 78% increase.
Brodie, make this an end of the year type vid every year. Where you can see the fall and rise of certain franchises year over year. I think you’d have an audience interested in the overall health of leagues over the years. Heck, maybe in 2027 you make a vid showing how in 3 years maybe the MLS explodes in revenue. Something like that, ya know?
I was in Sweden this past summer. I saw NY Yankees caps everywhere. I walked through a Stockholm department store and saw mannikins sporting expensive fashionable clothes and Yankees caps! No other teams, just the Yankees. So the NY Yankee valuation doesn't surprise me at all.
From what I understand, a lot of Europeans know that cap is related to New York but don't know it's the Yankees cap. Bless the Yankees for selling a lot of caps.
The NBA signed this massive streaming deal and has paradoxically lost a lot of audience. The NFL also had minor slump when it switched to streaming for TNF, but has remained steady for the past few years. MLB might actually do better audience wise when RSNs die, but that will hurt revenue. Not familiar enough with the NHL or MLS to comment, but the MLS' growth seems promising.
The NHL valuations are growing; all 32 teams are above one billion dollars, and TV ratings have grown in the past three seasons since the new TV deal was signed in 2021. (They are currently in decline compared to last year but still higher than 2022-23 at this point, and to this point, there have been no ABC games.) The NHL still has to do better marketing and promotion of star players and key matchups, but it is on an upward trajectory, in my opinion. The MLS Cup ratings have declined from getting over a million to under 500,000 since the Apple deal was signed, I am not a soccer fan so I only know what I have read about the sports business but the Apple Deal from what I have seen has not lived up to expectations
NBA only has national broadcast for the big divisions so Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, Celtics, 76ers, and Knicks. All the other games reverse regional restriction which means if you live in middle no MN, OKC, or Denver. NFL has the relevant regional restriction so the middle gets Broncos, Chiefs, and Vikings. The big NFL teams still get a national broadcast with Monday Night Football or NBC Sunday Night.
Interesting to see what happens to the Warriors valuation when Steph retires and they become an average team. I was surprised to see the NHL so close to MLB.
I didn't know that there was a drop. But I noticed that a lot of minor league teams abandoned their old traditional names for something cutesy and supposedly more marketable. My grandfather played for the Erie Sailors, and I remember watching the Jacksonville Suns. What's wrong with these old names? They help connect the generations.
Part of MLB’s inability to grow is the fact that almost half the league doesn’t really compete, they have ownership groups that prefer taking the easy guaranteed money. Just look at whats happened to the Athletics and Rays. MLB also overplayed its hand with these ridiculous regional deals that creates the annoying blackouts. The product is as good as ever, but unfortunately the league is run by shoddy owners and a commissioner that refuses to confront them.
It would be interesting to see what this list would look like if the top college football/basketball programs, European soccer teams like Real Madrid (who are one of the most popular sports teams globally) & even something like the Ferrari F1 team were included because the data would look totally different. For example some of the top college football programs like an Alabama or Ohio State would be valued higher than the majority of NBA teams & even some NFL teams simply because of the fact that they generate so much revenue as if they are a pro sports team. Then when it comes to Real Madrid & Ferrari's F1 team, they would likely be in that same category as the top college football teams due to their global reach & ability to market themselves especially when it comes to social media. Social media is one of the biggest reasons why F1 has exploded in popularity in recent years in the US & why F1 is in a prime position to overtake NASCAR as the top motorsport in the US (even though NASCAR's new media rights deal is better than F1's), something that would have been unthinkable 10-15 years ago. Lastly, I think we will see a team from the WNBA and/or NWSL crack the 1 billion mark in terms of valuation, especially if both leagues continue to grow the way they have done in recent years.
Just one more thing. As a kid growing up in the 60s, 70s I got to go to a lot of Giants and A,s games. They were affordable and fun. I only got to only one pre season football game ( the Oakland Raiders ) and never been to a Basketball or Hockey game. So my heart is still in Baseball and now they are all expensive to go see and that's if you can get a ticket to a Football or Basketball game, I have no idea about Hockey
You know, I don't think people realize how difficult it is to run and operate a pro sports team. Here's an interesting case in point: The Los Angeles Lakers. I read in an article this past summer that the Buss family, who of course own the Lakers, actually aren't flush with as much cash as people think. Even though they won the NBA Championship in 2020, the Lakers have been mired in mediocrity since Dr. Jerry Buss passed away in 2013. Now, of course, numbers don't lie -- but they don't always tell the full story either.
Love you covering MLS a bit. As someone in my very early 30s baseball feels very old fashioned while soccer is surging. I wonder if we look at this again in 10-15 years baseball falls behind NHL and maybe even MLS.
Baseball may be old fashioned, but it’s ingrained in the American sports psyche. I don’t ever see it falling behind the NHL, or MLS. Soccer as a sport is growing rapidly, but MLS still barely registers a blip on the radar. Case in point; the Red Bulls just played for the championship. I live in the NY metro area, and you never would have known. I mean almost zero news/coverage. 10-15 years is not going to do it. MLS would have to sign a star players at their height, while the US men’s team would need to win the World Cup.
Ive been watching sports for 40 years and ive learned nothing goes according to planned. The average fan cant go to professional games anymore. Going to an nfl game would cost $1000 for a family of 4 now. The NFL more than any other league keeps finding ways to take my last dollar. I just dont see how the nfl can take more money from me and other fans. Baseball is still the cheapest ticket in town and that will save it. Just because we are willing to pay for football now doesnt mean thats how we will feel in 10 years. I dont pay for nfl streaming services and will never do it. Im sure there are more fans like me. I surely wont do it for the NBA. I actually took a 10 year break from watching baseball and have now come back to watching it because i can easily go to games with my 5 year old without going broke. I guarantee most fans will do the same. NFL is great but when i was a kid you couldnt give away bucs or saints tickets for free and now the NFL seems hell bent on pricing the average fan out.
I don’t think the valuations are a strong indicator of future or current success. We have seen the nba struggle with viewership the last few years and if there’s one thing for certain it’s that curry brings the nba its best viewership and he’s on the end of his career. From what I’ve seen, that big media deal that the nba signed recently is already looking like a disaster for the investors unless they can make some changes. On the other hand baseball struggled in the 2010s as a lot of greats who brought eyeballs retired like Griffey and jeter, and this is why mlb growth was slower, but fast forward to 2024 and it seems like baseball is in its best position in a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a big jump for mlb valuations in the next 10 years based on their strong 2023 and 2024 numbers.
I used to love the NBA. Now I see it as just something to watch until baseball season starts. Baseball is by far my favorite sport. Favorite team is the Seattle Mariners. You would think they'd be valued more. 4 straight winning seasons with a young team that's only going to get better. That's a potential dynasty.
Bettman is not a well-liked Commissioner, but have to hand it to him - other than insisting on keeping the Coyotes in Phoenix for way too long, he's done a good job in keeping the league competitive, though I'd like to see some rule changes that I think would make each game more exciting (no point for losing in overtime - got to a Win-Loss-Winning Percentage system, no icing the puck without getting an icing call while short handed, widen the nets by the width of one goalpost).
Well I can remember when there was a Monday night baseball and our local Fox station KTVU played a Giants game every Friday ( no matter where they were playing ) before there was even a Fox network. Plus games on Saturday and Sunday. And I'm sure Free agency didn't help, fans losing there best or favorite players. And now we have the rise of the super teams and the teams that can't compete are left in the dust. And then there are all these strikes and new TV contracts that get confusing. One has to ask is Radio next. Now I'm still a Baseball fan even over a Football, Basketball and Hockey fan but with all these new rule changes it's getting were I'm getting really tired of it along with the ever increasing salaries. Shoot it like these players who don't have a clue what's it's like to hold down a job just to survive and even just a million dollars could change our lives immensely and yet they hold out for a hundred million plus for just a couple of few years.
The entire idea of bringing baseball to Las Vegas even though a small market was to bring the glitz to baseball . The A’s value is put at 1.2 billion lowest in the league yet Fisher wants an investor to put up 500 million for just 25% with the idea of a baseball team in Las Vegas is going to be huge.. The problem with that thinking is unlike the NFL Raiders who have a huge following and play mostly all games on a Sunday the A’s will be playing during the week , play 81 games and have little to no fan base in Las Vegas or anywhere else unlike the Raiders who are an icon team with massive following especially from LA where most Las Vegas visitors come from. The Raiders have the most expensive tickets in the league despite being a horrible team and will never get better as long as Davis owns them because he isn’t about winning he only cares about putting people in the seats ..The A’s won’t be able to pull that off . Overpriced tickets to see a losing team with no fan base is not what will attract tourists . People will come to see the stadium not the A’s and after a couple of years the shine will wear off and nobody will care and the A’s will be worth no more than they are right now
According to Forbes, 3/4 of the A's value came from the market they played in and MLB itself (the Coliseum was about 11% of the total at $133 million). So, if the stadium is to be built, it will double the franchise value.
@ They won’t ..The stadium is being built to draw tourists it’s not being built for locals and everyone knows it ..The stadium will be the draw no different than the Sphere or when the Luxor went up or the Excalibur ..It’s just a tourist draw and like the Luxor and Excalibur nobody gives a rats behind after you see it once .. There is little to no excitement or anyone even talking about the A’s . Everyone is more excited about getting a Vegas born NBA team that they won’t steal tax payer money to build an arena ..I’m sure teams like the Yankees , Cubs , Red Sox , Dodgers and Angels will draw big time when in town but others no so much especially when the ticket prices will be through the roof with insane concession prices to make back the money invested . If MLB was smart they would move the A’s to the NL west to set up a rivalry with the Dodgers as Las Vegas is a Dodger town and there would be instant rivalry and would get Las Vegas excited ..
Brodie: Excellent video ( of course I expect nothing less from you). I agree with you about the problems in MLB. The only two major sports in worse shape are MLS ( they simply do not resonate with most sports fans), and College Football whose problems are another “Can of Worms”’ (especially in California ( USC is the only school I expect to see improved)).
Phillies have NBC Sports Philly for the regional TV Deal, and as you can see, they are right there with the Astros. They will be one of the few in that pack… already at the top end of it for baseball… moving the right direction for value.
Very fascinating, and I can’t really say that I’m surprised by their 1-5 sports valuations. Perhaps how ‘low’ baseball is, is a surprise, but I’d already been hearing good things about hockey’s values. I wonder if that’s due in part to the NHL’s willingness to expand from 30 to 32 teams, and one of those being Vegas; truly, the league just feels bigger to me and possibly even bigger than baseball in the broader sports world. I’d be very interested in seeing how the women’s pro leagues (NWSL, WNBA, PWHL) and the … lower popularity men’s leagues (CFL, NLL), the top minor leagues (MiLB, AHL, G-League), and both men’s and women’s college sports, also compare in valuation. I know there is a big difference between Terry Pegula’s teams in Western New York State--NFL Buffalo Bills, NHL Buffalo Sabres, NLL Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Knighthawks, and the AHL Rochester Americans. The Bandits are the only team of his to win any championships during his ownership tenure, and his hands-on meddling with the Sabres resulting in a recently-ended 14-game losing streak , 13 consecutive seasons missing the playoffs, and no playoff series won since the 2006-07 season.
MLB has two years before a certain vitriolic CBA. I wouldn't hold my breath on a long work stoppage because the lower -revenue teams simply must effectuate systemic changes.
So, the big drawbacks for MLB are the lack of a national television package (with equal revenue sharing) and no real salary cap. I agree that their outlook is negative based on the fact that they can't remedy those two drawbacks. The MLB "Haves" possess their own very lucrative television packages that aren't shared and use that money to pay Soto, Ohtani-level money to buy the best players. They have no incentive to "reform" for the overall league's benefit. Very much like the English Premier League.
SailGP is in its 5th season and teams are worth in the $85 million range. Not bad considering sailing is such a fringe sport. There is some room for this to grow, but not too much, though.
Would be very interesting if you were to subtract all of the National TV revenues not the local ones. Then just post the franchise Operating vs Expense revenues, then add each teams share of national tv deals evenly. M guess is some teams may show a revenue operating loss. Almost forgot the the NHL Canadian based teams share in a Canada wide tv deal alone.
Warriors moving to San Francisco...worth 8 BILLION. A's moving to Las Vegas...worth 1.3 billion. Throw in the Niners and Giants and only an idiot would move a team out of the Bay Area!
2:38: With the money the Dodgers are bringing in from Ohtani ( HUGE revenues from Japanese companies plus Ohtani merchandise sales both in Japan and the US) and the fact that ALMOST all of "$700 million" they are paying him is deferred YEARS down the road), the Dodgers valuation could catch the Yankees in the next few years.
Interesting...for me mostly because the Celtics have put themselves up for sale...but that might end up just being an internal ownership change...and it won't happen until 2028?
This is one of those cases where financial value doesn't equate to quality. The NHL seems a much more competitive league than the NBA. Also, although I love football, I cannot understand how its popularity outstrips other sports so significantly.
Interesting that the Yanks and Cubs are in the top tier while their same-city counterparts, the Mets and White Sox are not. Same market, different results.
Vancouver is interesting because so much of the attention and dollars are concentrated on just one team. It's weird because it loves events with a bigtime feel like the Olympics, Women's World Cup and the upcoming World Cup, but it doesn't necessarily translate to whole-season support for something other than the Canucks. The NBA occasionally returns for a pre-season game, and there are sizable pockets of Seahawks and Blue Jays fans that go to Seattle. I wonder if the Apple TV deal actually hurt the ability to follow some of the MLS clubs like the Whitecaps
Winnipeg is the only truly small Canadian NHL team. The other teams mentioned like Edmonton and especially Vancouver play in large metro areas. Where to go right now is the very weak Canadian dollar. Every player in the league gets paid in US dollars including those playing for Canadian clubs., but Canadian cities, of course sell tickets and hotdogs in Canadian dollars. That is their real challenge right now.
I'd argue that the Canadian teams and their billion a coming from Sports net in their national, and regional deals bring more to the NHL than larger nontraditional hockey markets in the US
Would highly disagree with Canadian team revenues for most of the teams. The TV deals with TSN/CBC/Sportsnet are the most lucrative in the league. Merchandise sales per capita are much higher. Winnipeg & Ottawa struggle being smaller markets and not nearly as deep corporate bases in their markets. Toronto could easily handle a 2nd team because of demand for tickets, and especially affordable tickets.
Giants issue is not money, Giants issue is their ball park. They designed it too big to attract hitters now it has a rep of being a bad place to hit. On top of that players don’t want to live in the Bay Area with all the crime and mess.
The BIG reason why the Dodgers are so valuable is because they have that exclusive Time Warner deal which gives them basically unlimited spending funds. MLB is due for a massive crash soon in the USA because we have way too much gap between the Haves and have nots. The Giants are frankly the top of mid-tier as far as franchises only because our ownership group is so toxic AND incompetent. The Cubs have a similar problem which is the only reason why they are not in the playoffs WAAAY more than they are. MLB has rich owners who have too much pull and cheapskates who pocket money MEANT to be spent on salary, ALL of those owners need to go.
One thing to consider with the valuation of Canadian teams is the Canadian dollar. Our loonie is at a low point right now, which affects valuations as the sponsorship deals/TV revenues/etc. are typically in CAD. The revenue and profits are much lower in relative terms as a result, and it affects our franchises.
Yep that CAD/USD discrepancy has affected the NHL (more than other leagues) for a long time and often cited as a reason against Canadian expansion either in Quebec City or Southern Ontario.
$4.66 billion 10th place for Raptors. Toronto MLB in the middle 14th 15th. Also MLB & NHL same general vicinity. For context purposes think about 8th place career earnings for Wimbledon, French Open, US Open, or Australian Open. Same lower pay with average golfer. The fact is the 3rd best team player makes a lot more in a mid sized metro in both the MLB & NBA & NHL than individual tennis & golf.
Vital Vegas reported that Fisher was offered 2 billion and a percentage in the Warriors for the A's and he said no. Wouldn't that make them worth a least 2 billion or was Vital Vegas totally full of it?
Someone outside that report said there is some truth to the report. The As may be worth a bit less, but Lacob was trying to keep the As in Oakland so he offered a bit more trying to entice Fisher and Fisher said no. Now instead of making 2 billion dollars, he may be spending more than that on this Vegas pipe dream, and I don’t think Vegas is going to be the gold mine that Fisher thinks it is.
Literally, yes. The true valuation of any item is the amount a potential buyer would have to pay its current owner in order to effect a sale. If I wouldn't sell my 2017 Subaru Legacy for less than $50,000, then...my 2017 Subaru Legacy is "worth" $50,000.
Cowboy fans are going to see this and be even more obnoxious. The Raiders are worth more than I thought. Still don’t consider them a national brand like Mark Davis thinks.
MLS is not even 30 years old. They've come a long way, but it's not realistic to compare them to other leagues that have been around for more than a century. On another matter, soccer here differs from the "Big 4" sports in its total lack of casual fans. You either attend/watch all the games, buy the merchandise, debate about it on social media ... or you ignore it. Hockey is the only other major sport that has few casual fans outside of the diehards.
There’s no way Golden State is worth more than the Lakers or the Knicks. And only a fool would pay that price when they’re that overpriced. What if they go back to complete irrelevance when Steph retires?
Possibilities: their all-powerful, attention-grabbing owner; a proud history (at least before 1996); Cowboys-obsessed pundits in national sports media; a national and loyal fanbase; a reach into popular culture unmatched by few other sports teams (like the Yankees, Lakers, Dodgers, Raiders, and maybe the Montreal Canadiens, even non-sports fans know who the Cowboys are).
MLB should be horrified at these numbers, but they're not. Reason - the "right people" are making money, and the bottom feeders seem to be happy with scraps while the fans get screwed. Just think about it, folks. The MLB plays TWICE as many games, but can't recover the same levels of revenue that hockey and basketball - with half the season - which make these valuations possible. MLB has DOUBLE the travel expenses. MLB can't buy viewers in those also-ran markets bundled up down there at the bottom. And say nothing of the fact that 'star' player salaries are completely out of control in Baseball, with some particular players rivaling on paper the net worth of teams at the bottom. MLB is a pyramid scheme, run by a kakistocratic management, that worships at the altar of the almighty dollar - the hell with fan satisfaction. MLB is treating its fans like drug addicts, trying to shoehorn the entire league - every game - into a pay-per-view distribution with streaming. This at a time when they can't even get fans to watch games for free over television airwaves - due to lack of competition, too many commercials, and lack of market elasticity (i.e., being able to watch your own team), and the general state of "suckage" at the bottom-dwelling teams. That tight consolidation of markets in the NHL is actually a sign that they are doing it right. It's called a level playing field. (Or at least the ice is level... 😏...)...Manfred apologists. Do you need to see more proof that Baseball is dying? It's all out there...Keep in mind though that a lot of these team valuations are simply tracking inflation and the value of the USD, and some funny money practices that have gone in recently, such as deferred contracts...
The Dodgers being valued almost 2 billion less than the Lakers in 2024 makes no sense to me. I get that Lebron is argubaly the GOAT and the Lakers are one of the cornerstone NBA franchises, but the reality is that the Lakers have been mediocre for years. Even comparing overall MLB Vs NBA relevance, the 2024 World Series averaged almost 4 million more viewers than the 2024 NBA finals.
Unlike the NHL, MLB, and NBA, MLS is not the best league in their sport. Shohei Othani, Nikola Jokic, Leon Draisaitl are the best in their respective sports and left their country to play in North America. You’re not going to see that in MLS. You will see quality guys leave their country for the MLS, especially in the Caribbean and Latin America. But MLS will not have the best in their prime.
nhl still lags way behind in revenue/franchise value/tv ratings compared to other big three after 30 years of the little man weasel bettman. And bettman sacrificed good canadian markets winnipeg, qc, as well as hartford and '04-'05 season as an excuse to get his 'cost certainty/salary cap as nhl still reels behind 20 years later. Yet could have put that az. mess in t o area destined to make lotsa $$$'s.
Do you know how many Canadian teams wouldn't still exist if Bettman hadn't saved their sorry asses? At least three. The NHL has a lot of problems, but Gary Bettman isn't one of them. Not even close.
@@stlfatman NO because winnipeg only re-entered nhl because bettman's stubborness in az. and nhl owning az. led thrash owners to force bettman to allow sale to true north. A presser that bettman sulked thru like a 10 year old having his candy taken away. So NO bettman has done nothing to save canadian teams. And leafs nhl's most valuable team, habs, and original 6 teams who receive no revenue sharing provide nhl with a chunk of revenue every season. And canada could support 4 more teams including qc yet their obstacle-bettman-remains. If not for canadian teams nhl wouldn't exist. You bettman apologists are as funny as you are fkn pathetic. At least you can thank bettman for turning nhl into a no hitting p-----isfied ice capades on ice contest every game. And if bettman's revenue sharing was a good thing then why doesn't qc return with revenue sharing to boost qc just like with winnipeg? Bettman used rev. sharing to keep az. on life support way too long yet just turns his nose up at a solid canadian market with fan base. Answer that smart ass... Gary bettman is to blame for no hitting, killing off rivalries, three pt. games/shoot-outs, dumb ass name for divisions, a clown show circus for all star game/weekend, tired worn out winter classics cause bettman thinks he invented hockey outdoors on ice, terrible tv deals with lousy streaming, etc. Its all about the $$$'s, Thats all on an out of touch business lawyer charading as nhl commish so yes gary $ bettman is to blame for most nhl problems. Plus the always exciting dead puck clutch and grab trap era took place under bettman as mr. clueless sat idly by. nfl takes steps to keep from becoming stagnant. Bettman could have done the same thing yet sat with his finger up his ass waiting for his fkn lock-out. nhl is still the only major sport to lose a whole season-thank bettman for that one as well. And two other lock-outs. LOL to that shit.

Any values for women's basketball or soccer teams? Would be interesting to see how they are rated?
Since discovering your channel, it has become my go-to for sports news. Usually short and to the point. Love it.
While I don’t consider myself a huge sports fan, I’m fascinated by the business of sports, so I really enjoy this kind of stuff. I recently discovered Brodie, and I find myself watching most of his videos.
Agree, also interested in the business end of it, and Brodie covers this aspect of the game(s) very well.
Baseball needs a hard cap/floor like football and hockey
Players won't go for it but they need a Floor for sure. The Luxury tax isn't working like it was supposed to.
players union too strong. it could also potentially surpress winning for the big market teams. MLB ratings are run by 6 to 8 clubs and they need some big markets to have WS potential
That and the NHL missed the entire 2005 season to get that salary cap
@@samelmudirThey may start to finally see the light if the Dodgers and Yankees keep getting everyone and there is less and less competitive balance. At some point it will implode. More and more teams will start to be in finical trouble ie Rays and As’
Brodie, I said this before, go look at some of the MLB team's payrolls. Some of them are BELOW the NHL salary cap floor. It's truly atrocious how bad the MLB has become. They need a full-season lockout to institute a salary cap/floor, or else, many MLB teams will become unwatchable, leeching off the "haves" of the MLB.
America loves watching the Cowboys lose!
Merry Christmas Brodie
The NHL is showing why MLB needs a hard Salary cap and floor system. It is a much more competitive league. Why do baseball fans need to see the Braves, Giants, Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Yankees win every year? (Because they have the most money) That isn't fair to all of the other MLB teams.
Half of those MLB teams you mentioned did not make the playoffs this year.
The funny thing is a lot of MLS teams are worth more than Premier League clubs lol
Outside of the big six (City, United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Chelsea) you’re exactly right. Even in Europe, there’s massive gaps in leagues like France and Germany in terms of quality between the top and bottom.
With the expansion fee of $500M i would hope so
@@youautoknowjoe Yall liberal's dont know nothing buddy. We play real football in this Christian nation
Thanks for including MLS
I grew up in Dallas, so my Cowboys fandom comes honestly. That said, I’m always perplexed why so many with no connection to the city adopt a team that fails at every turn.
They used to be a very good franchise for decades.
Cubs went from the bottom to the top of richest teams and then chose to go back to losing. Infuriating.
valuation certainly tied to results, but more associated with TV deals, revenue, real estate, etc...
As a white Sox fan
And I know this is sac religious to empathize
But our Chicago sport team owners take advantage of us
As much as i can say nothing goes right for us lately as Sox fan and find it cringe to find a silver lining pat on back
Rest of Chicago fans can see why we don’t go unless team is winning into September
Bulls fans which Sox fans fall into are over loyal
Mediocre crap of a franchise
Jerry don’t care !
Key headwind for MLS is it doesn’t have international credibility while the other leagues listed are considered the best in the world for their sport.
The valuation is interesting because the 2024 world series had more viewers than any NBA finals since at least 2019
LA vs NY the two biggest markets...it better had done well lol...lol yankees suck go Dodgers lol
Minnesota soccer team lead owner is a former United Healthcare CEO McGuire who by 2006 had made $1.6 billion.
NY Giants have been trying real hard to be worth less
How does Manfred have a job based on this??
Canadian teams have to deal with the Canadian dollar, which is currently valued at 70 cents compared to the U.S. dollar.
That is all of it. Canadian TV is pretty lucrative compared to the US, but Canadian dollars at the Gate and players paid in US dollars hurts.
Jimm from Chicago….Hi Brody….Love the show!…..Still love my sports but I am totally locked out of going to live events…..

The Lakers don't even own their arena, still a little hard to understand the distance between the Lakers and even the Knicks🤷🏿♂️
AEG used to have a share of the lakers but sold it to the Dodgers Owners in 2021
Brody, I'm shocked you haven't mentioned anything about your most beloved AZ Coyotes.
@@MichaelMeade-d7b How does the Mets' cap sell?
Great video. It's a great topic. another topic worth investigating is the drop in attendance in Minor Lesgue Baseball since MLB took it over
I didn't know that there was a drop.
Great video!
If TV, streaming, as well as in person attendance, falls, advertising falls, values fall.
how marketable a player is also can affect team value
Brodie what tablet/computer set up do you have?
for telestration, that's just a Wacom One tablet. Running software called Broad Board for the overlay
A small wager on the Warriors in the 90s and early 00s being the highest valued team in 2024 would have won you a lot of money. lol.
People will come to see the stadium not the A’s and after a couple of years the shine will wear off and nobody will care and the A’s will be worth no more than they are right now
Pretty much.
Fisher is the worst owner in pro sports. Earthquake in the MLS is also horrific.
Just because the A's didn't have much of a fanbase in Oakland doesn't mean they won't develop one in Vegas.
Everyone is more excited about getting a Vegas born NBA team that they won’t steal tax payer money
to build an arena ..I’m sure teams like the Yankees , Cubs , Red Sox , Dodgers and Angels will draw big time when in town but others no so much especially when the ticket prices will be through the roof with insane concession prices to make back the money invested .
0:52 I wish this graph had a longer X axis
Except none of those other teams are the unloved sibling of the market.
The Maple Leafs and the Other Cdn NHL valuations have not advance due to major devaluation of the CAD. Down almost 15 percent in 18 months
Kinda crazy that the Warriors actually overtook the Lakers
Interesting that the Yanks and Cubs are in the top tier while their same-city counterparts, the Mets and White Sox are not. Same market, different results.
Canucks fan here, but you are right about the wealth (or lack of) in Vancouver. They lost the Grizzlies and will soon lose the White Caps!
Will MLB follow MLS and become a streaming league? I hope not.
Growing 30% in one year. Why isn't that just inflation?
That is Vancouver BC, and not the first Vancouver, Washington.
I don't think anybody was thinking of the lesser known town in Washington
Do the recent NBA ratings cause any concerns?
I have seen New York Yankees paraffinailia all around the world so I can't imagine that the Dallas Cowboys could be worth more than them
I love the Warriors but I don't really buy them being worth more than the Lakers.
Brody, a lot of this has to do with gambling too. People bet on Football more than anything.
NFC East worth soooo much
The New York and L.A. teams are in serious need of being controlled. Serious revenue sharing is the only answer.
#RootedInOakland
If you own a team valued at $1.2 billion and someone offers you $2 billion for it, WHY WOULD YOU TURN IT DOWN? #SellTheTeam
NBA sucks. Its from the Asian market that they have higher valuations.
Who's coming up with these numbers? The Golden State Warriors are valued more than the New York Yankees?
Wrong.
The Maple Leafs won’t get past the first round of the playoffs however. Money doesn’t get the Maple Leafs common sense.
Cowboy fans are going to see this and be even more obnoxious.
The Raiders are worth more than I thought. Still don’t consider them a national brand like Mark Davis thinks.
"Cowboy fans are going to see this and be even more obnoxious."
Not possible.
The Clippers' market has really grown, too.
And yet, most in L.A. still don't give a
Sally-Harry-Ingrid-Tom
about them!
@psychopathyoutubeemployees280 At least they're more popular than the Chargers. Hell, the LA Sparks are more popular than the Chargers.
I'd bet in 10 years MLS will be #2 and MLB will be last,
I'd bet in 10 years MLS will still be #5.
The Mets are in the pack?
I was shocked the Mets aren’t worth more. Yes I get the Yankees are the main attraction in New York but the Mets have a lot going for them.
There’s no way Golden State is worth more than the Lakers or the Knicks. And only a fool would pay that price when they’re that overpriced. What if they go back to complete irrelevance when Steph retires?
I'll never understand why the Cowboys are so high. They've been a failure for 20+ years on the field.
WNBA?
wish I had that data
MLB also just had their highest viewed World Series since 2017 and their best attendance in a while. I think mlb is doing fine
MLB, hire me, and I will push MLB to a close 2nd to the NFL. Robert Manfred doesn't know how to extract the value that is the MLB in this day and age.
Okay. What do you have?
@HHSGDFootballJPD nice try Manfred I'm not giving you a freebie ☝️
Valuations are such BS when it comes to the NBA. It came out half the teams in the NBA lose money, and that was back when the NBA was doing better.
nhl still lags way behind in revenue/franchise value/tv ratings compared to other big three after 30 years of the little man weasel bettman.
Let’s be honest here baseball is a dying sport and the wnba will surpass the mlb in 10 years
LOL not even close to dying. MLB will outlive the NBA
The WNBA hasn’t turned a profit since inception. If it wasn’t subsidized by the NBA they would’ve been gone years ago
People have always said baseball is declining since the early 20th century I don’t think that’ll ever be the case
MLB has been doing better numbers than the nba viewership wise
@kingrazo10 very true, world series also outdid the NBA finals like 13 million average to 5 million
