It’s a shame that guys like Red are mortal and have to grow old and pass on. What a genius. Imagine being a Celts fan in the 60s and the only year you didn’t win a championship was in ‘67.

The interviewer is the great Bill Mazer and he was on channel 5 in NYC growing up and my man knew everything about sports! He answered the most obscure sports trivia every night and the anchorman, John Roland , was hoping to stump him. He was Amazing! RIP to both gentlemen.
His comment on the Knicks holds true in 2020. Wild.

Red is literally a Philosopher. Wisdom is almost an understatement.
Red Auerbach knew more about basketball and was so far ahead of everyone else. Red on round-ball !

Just imagine how great the celtics would've been with Bias, young legs coming off the bench playing both forward positions. At less two more Championships...
It would have changed the NBA potentially up to today. Lakers would have responded by stocking their own team to stay competitive. Bulls would at most win three rings, depending on the management decisions. And a cascade of changes will follow.
Bird's basketball fundamentals made him a good rebounder.
And height and tenacity.
Those were the days when no one complained about super-teams. Or even later when Boston added Bill Walton to augment the great trio of Bird, Parrish and McHale. Long before Lebron James and Bosch were added to Dwane Wade's Miami Heat. The only team whose legacy is as dominant as the Boston dynasty is Wooden's UCLA teams, and they stockpiled talent so that even some of their bench players became NBA stars, like Swen Nader.
Bill Russell's era transitioned perfectly to Larry Bird's era. And it could have easily have went to a Len Bias era. It's too bad they haven't been the same since then
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the 2 championships in between. The Dave Cowens era wasn't slouch-time in Celtics history by any means.

@@lonesomelou4188 we would. Havlicek is one of the true superstars of the game. To this day. And Cowens was a consistent all star. And usually 2nd best C of the 70s.
@@Amick44 Nice correction! Russell's era transitioned into the great Havlicek ERA! But you must be a homer if you think Cowen's was the second best center of the seventies! Plenty of guys better than him Moses Malone, Bob Lanier, Wes Unseld, Bill Walton, Artis Gilmore, Jack Sikma, Bob McAdoo,etc. Cowens was a great undersized Center on an excellent all-around team with Havlicek and JoJo White. But by no means was he special... of course I didn't mention Abdul-Jabbar because I figured you had enough sense to know that he was the top dog...
@@jehuslay5238 I would give you Malone & Walton. Both were right there with Kareem. But they came on in the mid 70s.
I meant thru the entire decade I would pick Cowens behind only Kareem. I pick him without hesitation over Unseld & Sikma. I would consider Lanier, but mid 70s he began to get injured regularly. And Gilmore just didn't quite have the effect in the NBA as he did the ABA.
Though I also say it took him too long to get into the Hall.
And McAdoo was more like a forward.
I love hearing this stuff. Why is "Pistons" in the title though? Would've been cool to hear what he had to say on that topic too.

Red was on pojnt about their not being a drug problem in basketball. Len Bias was a freak occurrence. Basketball is actually the least corrupt of the major sports when it comes to drug use.

MJ would still be the 90s king but Len Bias would’ve helped win more rings in the 80s for Boston. He would definitely keep the Celtics alive in the 90s after bird n mchale left
Reggie Lewis was drafted second to last by the Celtics in the 87’s first round, so there is a good chance he would have still been available for them even after winning the championship that year, plus the fact he was more a shooting guard than a small forward therefore complementary to Len Bias.
Not if the Spurs take Lewis if the Celtics drop a spot. And even if he were available, what if they decide they would draft a power forward?
This interviewer seems to be in disbelief that Bird was being held in high regard. You don’t question Larry Legend!
imagine if Len bias had lived and Reggie Lewis didn't die so young. It could have extended birds career and God knows how many more championships

The world lost a notch or two when this Man died a absolutely abhorred the Celtics growing up Lakers for life but this man doesn't have a racist bone in his body you can see in his demeanor he judges people on their actions as life long Lakers fan and being infatuated with the game of basketball I was a kid when the great Len Bias died if he and Larry Bird would have played together the Celtics would have more championships than any sports franchise in all of professional competition if you don't know who Len Bias is look him up he was as good if not better than Jordan

Anyone would take Bird except for you. Russell had no adversary and that's why he won but it was so boring that NBA was not popular. Low number of teams too. If Magic wasn't around Bird could have as many rings too against a much more competive league. Remember the merger of the ABA and NBA in 70s created a much bigger and better league. Bird is the GOAT and Russell would tell you that if he wasn't fighting for his own legacy. Bird remains so humble and refuses to talk about his legacy.
