I'm Catholic, i'm looking into converting to Orthodoxy. I prayed this along with you last night, and never in my life have i ever "felt it" while praying as i did going through this chant. I don't know if all Orthodox prayers are meant to be sung like this, but if so, i'm a fool for not converting years ago. God bless you and keep up the good work dude!

I was a Traditional Catholic and began to study . Just study, pray, and study some more. I love my Roman Catholic Faith and adored my Catholic upbringing and knew my faith deeply. Sadly, I knew the tenets of my faith but did not know Jesus nor did I have a belief in His love for me. I feared Him. It wasn’t until I found Orthodoxy that I found Him. Never have I looked back. Study and pray the Jesus prayer.

I read a few - I have a similar prayer to his in this video, "Let God Arise," for nightly protection from demons that I read, for instance, and I've found reading the Psalms and Epistle to be generally easier for concentrating on their content (though I still sing the lectionary Gospel reading), but everything else, I sing/chant. From what I've heard here on TH-cam, the same goes for most Orthodox.

@@deb664 My wife's Latin Mass Trad Catholic, and got there after I got here to Orthodoxy (when we met, I was in the midst of moving from atheism to agnosticism to Theism and she was lapsed and then Novus Ordo). I mourn deeply for Rome and pray every day for recommunion. With some irony, I actually believe the current tiny but budding Latin Mass revival, return of Anglicanism to both us and Rome, and growth of Western Rite Orthodoxy to be a good sign of this possibility. We will both, I'm sad to say, be under assailment soon - perhaps even in our lifetimes, God forbid - and, as has been seen in the Middle East, the arrival of common pressure and violence can move to resolve the comparatively small debates between us (as compared to, say, the pronounced Protestant and post-Protestant heresies, both new and ancient, that led to the scientism and atheism I lived in for fifteen years). To baptize Lovecraft (sorry, H.P.), I personally believe that the West lies dreaming, not dead. I pray I'm right.

@@pdstor I was newly Chrismated this past Easter, I am so pleased and honored to be accepted into the Orthodox Church. God has shown me many times over how Important Western Rite Orthodoxy is to me and my family. We grew up Catholic and left the Church because of how they treated my father, and stayed away with the Catholic scandals, Papacy nonsense. We took back what is rightfully Orthodox anyways. Father Patrick is a blessing, both of my grandfathers died while I was young, he fills the Grandad role perfectly. I couldn't be happier with Western Rite. I feel happy to converse with Catholics (whom I condemned wrongly as a Pentecostal). Yet, with Western Rite I get fulfilling liturgy, one of the best choir groups in the country to sing the most pleasing heart melting music of all time, and familiarity/nostalgia all while feeling perfectly at place amongst my Church. Straight Doctrine helps with theosis. My family and I went Catholic, New Age, Christian, and now I'm praying all of us are converted to the one Holy Apostolic Catholic Church. I thank God I'm communion with all the Orthodox. I haven't had a chance to check out the Eastern liturgies, the Churches in my area are pretty weak at setting up good calendars and being openly welcome to any new visitors.
Or on the other hand, they are in languages I can't understand (most are filled to capacity around here anyhow)
Thank God our Orthodox Bishops accept the Western Rite!

O heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who art everywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come, and abide in us and cleanse us from every stain and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name’s sake.
    Lord, have mercy.
    Lord, have mercy.
    Lord, have mercy.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, o Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us, Amen.
Now that the day has come to a close, I thank thee, O Lord, and I ask that the evening with the night may be sinless; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Now that the day hath passed, I glorify thee, O Master, and I ask that the evening, with the night may be without offence; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.
Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Now that the day hath run its course, I praise thee, O Holy One, and I ask that the evening with the night may be undisturbed; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.
O eternal God and King of all creation, who has granted me to reach this hour, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from every impurity of the flesh and spirit. Grant, O Lord that I may pass through this night in peace, and when I rise from my humble bed I may praise the most Holy name all the days of my life, and trample underfoot the physical and bodiless enemies that wage war against me. Deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts and evil desires which defile me, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgression.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before me.
Against Thee only have I sinned and done this evil before Thee, that Thou mightest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thou art judged.
For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.
For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou made manifest unto me.
Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that be humbled, they shall rejoice.
Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and with Thy governing Spirit establish me.
I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness.
O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise.
For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not be pleased.
A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that is broken and humbled God will not despise.
Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be builded.
Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings.
Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and good will among men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty; O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; and O Holy Spirit. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord, O Jesus Christ, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Every night will I bless Thee, and I will praise Thy Name forever, yea, forever and ever.
Lord, thou hast been our refuge in generation and generation. I said: O Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee. O Lord, unto Thee have I fled for refuge, teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God. For in Thee is the fountain of life, in Thy light shall we see light. O continue Thy mercy unto them that know Thee.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this night without sin. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our Fathers, and praised and glorified is Thy name unto the ages. Amen.
Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in Thee. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Master, grant me understanding of Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Holy One, enlighten me by Thy statutes.
O Lord, Thy mercy endureth forever; disdain not the works of Thy hands. Unto Thee is due praise, unto Thee is due song, unto Thee glory is due, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Thy most honourable Mother, and Thy bodiless Angels, Thy Prophet and Forerunner and Baptist, the divinely-inspired Apostles, the bright and victorious Martyrs, the holy and God-bearing Fathers, and through the intercessions of all Saints, deliver me from this present assault of the demons. Yea, my Lord and Creator, Who desirest not the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant conversion also to me, wretched and unworthy, rescue me from the mouth of the pernicious serpent, its mouth open to devour me and take me down to hades alive. Yea, my Lord, my Comfort, Who for my miserable sake was clothed in corruptible flesh, draw me out of misery and grant comfort to my wretched soul. Implant in my heart to fulfil Thy commandments, and to forsake evil deeds, and to obtain Thy blessings, for in Thee, O Lord, have I placed my hope, save me.
O good Mother of the good King, most pure and blessed Theotokos Mary, pour out the mercy of thy Son and our God upon my passionate soul, and by thine intercession guide me towards good works, that I may pass the remaining time of my life without blemish, and attain paradise through thee, O Virgin Theotokos, who alone art pure and blessed.
O Angel of Christ, my holy Guardian and Protector of my soul and body, forgive me all the sins I have committed this day and deliver me from all the evil of my militant enemy, lest I anger my God by any sin. Pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that thou mayest show me forth worthy of the kindness and mercy of the All-holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, and of all the Saints. Amen.
It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, ever blessed and most pure and the mother of our God, more honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim, thee who without corruption gavest birth to God the word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirt, now and ever and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
    Lord have mercy x 3
    O Lord bless.
Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us, Amen.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.
O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who are in all places and fill all things,
the Treasury of good things and the Giver of life: Come and abide in us, cleanse us from every
stain, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (three times).
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of
    ages. Amen.
O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins. O Master, pardon
our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your Name’s sake.
    Lord, have mercy. (three times).
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of
    ages. Amen.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but
    deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Now that the day has come to a close, I thank You, O Lord, and I ask that the evening with
the night may be sinless; grant this to me, O Savior, and save me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Now that the day has passed, I glorify You, O Master, and I ask that the evening, with the
night may be without offence; grant this to me, O Savior, and save me.
Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Now that the day has run its course, I praise You, O Holy One, and I ask that the evening
with the night may be undisturbed; grant this to me, O Savior, and save me.
    Lord, have mercy. (twelve times)
    Prayer for Forgiveness
O Lord our God, if during this day I have sinned, whether in word or deed or thought,
forgive me all, for You are good and love mankind. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep,
and deliver me from all influence and temptation of the evil one. Raise me up again in proper
time that I may glorify You; for You are blessed with Your Only-begotten Son and Your All holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
    The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things
visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-Begotten,
begotten of the Father before all worlds, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not
made; of one essence with the Father; by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and
for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin
Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered
and was buried; the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into
heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge
the living and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son
together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in One Holy
Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. I look
for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayer for the End of the Day
O Christ our God, who at all times and in every hour, in heaven and on earth, are
worshipped and glorified; who are long-suffering, merciful and compassionate; who love the
just and show mercy upon the sinner; who call all to salvation through the promise of
blessings to come; O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications and direct our lives
according to Your commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our
thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulation, evil and distress. Encompass us
with Your holy Angels that, guided and guarded by them, we may attain to the unity of the
faith and to the knowledge of Your unapproachable glory, for You are blessed unto ages of
    ages. Amen.
It is truly right to bless you, O Theotokos, ever blessed and most pure, and the Mother of
our God. More honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the
seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify
    you.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of
    ages. Amen.
    Lord, have mercy. (three times).
Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us
    and save us. Amen.
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my soul and my body. Bless me, have mercy upon me,
and grant me life eternal. Amen.

I can't figure out whether to switch out the Doxology to the morning and then sing the shortened Vigil version for night prayers. Right now my morning prayers are way, way too long and unfocused, but with what I'm planning to cut out it'll leave them too short.

Do you have a spiritual father? Or at least an experienced priest you trust? It’s a good idea to learn from them about the very dynamic act of prayer. It’s also ok to change things a bit if you just aren’t able to do it with your heart and with focus. But try to speak with your spiritual father or an experienced priest for help.

@@OrthodoxWisdom Yes, I do have my father confessor (he's my closest thing to a spiritual father, since I'm far away from a monastery) but coming out of fifteen years of atheism before I converted, prayer became the longest and hardest habit to build consistent obedience with and next to apathy became my hardest fight. It was only a year ago from August that I started praying longer than just a minute or two (I've been Orthodox since 2013) and only a couple of weeks since I realized that staying strict to obeying him on a prayer rule meant, well, staying strict. I'd been figuring, hey, the more I pray the better, right?
Well, now that I've fully disclosed to him the extras I've been tossing on there, he's kind of had to start rooting out the old Protestantism of my long ago youth that still dwells in me (i.e. automatically thinking it's OK to add tons of prayers to my rule). Thank God that I was led to places like Mull Monastery and Orthodox Talks that caused me to realize how out of focus I was and how common of a rookie mistake this is.
The problem, of course, is that it's kind of hard to figure out what to keep and what to toss aside. As long as I don't pluck things like the Trisagion, nightly examination of conscience, at least one Troparion related to whether it's day or night, and (once a day at least) Psalm 50, the Creed, the Doxology, a small 5-10 min Gospel, Psalm and Epistle reading and prayers both to my patron/guardian angel and for the living/dead, he's leaving it up to me what to keep and when to say it. He's OK with me rotating a few in and out for fasting times but even then I still go through way too much material, probably because I hoarded prayer books when trying to put together that "perfect rule."
That was waaayyyyyy too long of an explanation, but that's the general place I'm in right now. The good news is I'm starting to gravitate toward the little Desert Fathers prayer book pamphlet from Jordanville as a consistent rule - one Fr. actually looked through and liked - though even here it's tough to not want to plow through all five sections on top of the examination of conscience and protection prayer I have to add to it already. AND I just discovered the necessity of daily reading about the saints, which I formerly thought was just an occasional thing to do on TH-cam and at Church. Pray for me to get organized, brother!

This is a combination of some basic morning prayers from a few different prayer books. Its not meant as a replacement as much as it is a shorter version to help people pray more than if they were to not pray at all. See the video description for more details.

@@OrthodoxWisdom Doing this might be very helpful for converting families, especially with young children. Although the Orthodox way is not to to make things easy, it is also not good for children to start disliking prayer. Young ones might be too distracted to be mindful or listen to the words, especially for new converts who maybe didn't ever pray at all before. The strict routine of Orthodox morning and evening prayers could become a chore, rather than a reverent joy.

Yes, certainly discernment is needed and consulting your spiritual father is very helpful. This collection of prayers isn’t meant to be a one-size-fits-all approach.

Wonderful. If you are interested there is an interesting history regarding Orthodox Christians and the rosary. I’ve only heard things here and there, but as I understand we are free to pray a more ancient version of the rosary and to avoid over-emphasizing imaginative imagery. Just thought I’d mention that while the Orthodox Church doesn’t support the current version/method of praying the rosary, there are many who haven’t thrown the baby out with the bath water. God be with you.

Orthodox Wisdom I don’t do the imagery part. I just pray clearing my mind of all distractions. I am interested in the rosary history. I was a born again Christian for 30 years. Then became catholic 10 years ago.
This year has been full of very bad things in the church, such as the idols (Pachamama) set up in a church in Rome. I’ve been exploring Orthodoxy. Also I’ve seen a documentary on the Tsar of Russia being martyred for his faith.

@4:28 I had no idea that Orthodox brethren pray every evening for the temple sacrifice to be reinstated; I doubt they recognize the implications either.
The perfidious judaists prefer the sacrifice of BEASTS over the blessed sacrifice made by Our Lord Jesus upon the cross - to pray for the offering of bullocks to resume is an _insult to Christ._

Prayer is the opening up of the heart to God as a friend. Useless repetitive phrases are not how you communicate with people, and it shouldn't be how you communicate with God. The bible does not endorse any kind of rosary and it compares those who repeat prayers to the pagans, who also have repetitive prayers and prayer beads.

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Prayer is talking to God, not repeating the same thing over and over and over again. Nobody who is sane communicates that way. Most people don't know how to pray.

@user-mi5wd7bg9e Repetition to a demon (idol) is indeed vain. ''
Christ wasn't talking to heathens. He was talking to followers. Heathens were just used as comparisons. God doesn't want to hear repetitive chants and mantras. That's not a conversation. He wants to hear what's on your heart. The Lord's prayer isn't some magic incantation. It's a model to help you formulate your prayer that you yourself create.

@@Jesse1_1_1 No, not according to scripture. He only repeated the prayer 3 times and it was a plea. It wasn't the way He always prayed. The garden of Gethsemane was a very unique situation. Prayer is like having a conversation with your Creator and Lord. It's not endless repetitions of the same prayer over and over, day after day. Only pagans do that.
