Most people don't want to take the time to actually fix something as easy as this. They'd rather just throw it away for one that works. I've had the same push mower for over 15 years and runs great as I've always repaired everything on it.

Watch out for that spring hanging off the bottom. It doesn't always stay stuck on that well. It won't run right without it. I like to put oil on the o-ring that slides over the intake tube, and around the tube. I just did a 25 year old Murray with a Briggs 3.5 classic. It's a really good engine. I was the first person to change the oil in it. :( Needed a new primer bulb too, it was stuck in. It's getting a new pull rope and blade after I finish my coffee. I've got one from 85 that was flooded in tax day 2016 and sat until the COVID-19 lockdown. Drained the water, flushed the engine with charcoal lighter, then transmission fluid, filled with oil, cleaned the carb in ultrasound and washed out the tank. Its on my channel videos, check it out along with some other flood recovery engines, including a funpower 5.0 flathead go-kart. That one is from 96. Old Briggs engines are awesome.

I’ve only had to rebuild the carburetor 3 to 4 times on my 86 Snapper. People should do that. It’s very easy in my opinion. Instead perfectly good mowers get thrown away.

The air filter can be washed out with dishwashing detergent and water, dried out then reoiled by saturating the filter in engine oil then wringing the excess oil out if it's not deteriorated or damaged.
I can remember when my auntie gave me my 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton powered lawnmower in 2008 the air filter was deteriorated so I had to replace it !

That's not the choke.....it's the throttle and it is a steel tank not aluminum- that's why it rusted.

  • @stinkys2160

The starter cord is too short. That is why you hear that zzzzt sound. It is pulling the starter dogs out just slightly. You can see the metal stop piece on the cord is too far out of the recoil starter.

A little marvel mystery oil in the tank helps prevent rust and provide upper cylinder lubricant. I have done it for years, with no problems.

Also check your intake tube to see if it is tight .
It can cause a vacuum leak and it is easy to check. On the newer engines with a dipstick Be Careful Not To Over Fill With Oil! It can cause hydro lock of the engine.
Oil seeps past the rings and you end up trying to compress oil in the head and the engine will not turn . If it happens remove the spark plug and pull it through a few times to get the oil out
and recheck the oil level and poor some out if you have to. When it does start it going to smoke a bit till the excess oil in the head burns away .

There is a oil separator under the flywheel. The PCV system has a tube that runs to the intake filter housing. The fumes from the crankcase go through the separator before being sucked into the air intake to be burned in the engine. When you remove the cover from the oil separator their is a weep hole to let the oil drain back into the crank case. When the hole is plugged the oil makes it's way to the air filter and after it builds up it will begin to make its way into the carburetor. Some oil separators have a reed valve or a spring valve that gets stuck or bent over time which will also cause oil to get past the separator. Repair and clean the PCV system, carburetor and change the air filter. Then inspect the air filter for oil every month as a check on the PCV system. th-cam.com/video/WnkVnRL9a9I/w-d-xo.html

  • @gordbaker896
    @gordbaker896 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Why would you even think of carb work over GRASS??? That is a 2 piece gasket, diaphragm(toward tank) and gasket.
Steel Tank, not Al. Beneath the Filter screen is the White Emulsion Tube . Pop it our with a small screwdriver and clean out all the holes. Check Carb between bolt holes for FLAT. Use a flat file to lower High Spots. A tiny drop or 2 of gasket goo along the Engine side between the 2 mounting bolts will assure no Air leaks. Lube the O ring with lithium grease. Spark Plug wire goes in the notch of the recoil housing. That is not a Governor Spring. Check blade for sharpness when you get that far into it.

was that filter oiled ? its a fuel diaphragm not just a gasket. you do not need to remove the blower housing to replace the carburetor diaphragm. Remove the Emulsion tube with a thin flat screwdriver and make sure all the holes in the Emulsion tube are clear. i feel guilty now :-( I'm not being mean :-( it sounds like its only running at 2500 rpm. it needs a little more speed.

You were lucky. You have 55.2 K subscribers so Im guessing 99.9 % of your videos are about something else. You did get the job done but like I said I think you got lucky. I always check the oil first and if its black I change it after I get the machine running with straight 30 oil. If you do enough carbs you will know just from looking at the gasket and the diaphram if it needs to be replaced but they are not expensive so if there is any doubt change it. Sometimes that carb you are working on will leak because the gasket dosnt always seal properly and what I do is make a score line between the five screw holesin the metal and that way the gasket will grip much better. The air filter can be cleaned unless it is falling apart. They can be expensive when you have to pay dealer price. I very rarely change spark
plugs but if I do I dont use the resistor plugs ( They start with an R in the number for example Champion RJ 17LM ) because they only last for about 7 to 10 years where the ones that dont have the R are good for almost ever. Always use high test gas without ethanol and drain the fuel tank and run it dry at the end of the season. Ethanol will break down after only a few months and when you clean the carb it will look like blue sugar and after 6 months it will look like black lumps or tar. That mower you were working on of course dosn't have a gas line but if it did always check to make sure its not breaking down because those black chunks of rubber are worse than dirt for plugging jets etc.Always clean the tank. If you have a rusty metal tank use acetone. You dont need a lot but keep turning the tank so it gets into every crevice. Then just rinse it out with the garden hose but make sure all the water is out before you put gas into the tank. If the tank is really bad I put gravel stones in side and shake it for a long time to break off the rust and then use the acetone if need be. I do this sort of thing as a hobby but I am self taught but I have learned well and know things a lot of small engine mechanics ask me for answers so I guess I know what Im doing. OK I have to get going because my head is starting to swell up. LOL

99.9 %my videos are about fixing anything actually. Luck? It had nothing to do with it. Its called... process of elimination, something a lot of people don't have the ability to do. I call that Assiduous!
