As a circumnavigator and boat builder I totally agree with your sentiments and advice. Any cruiser out there is a floating ATM as far as the locals are concerned. We took our brand new 15 Hp Honda outboard and punched a hole in the cowling, did a rudimentary fiberglass repair and painted it different colors with rustoleum- it looked like shit and that was the whole point( nobody stole it). We never wore ” logoed “- hats or other gear ashore and of course had a fictitious name for the dinghy. We had infrared motion detectors and bars for all our hatches and were always back on board before sundown. We had numerous “weapons on board” - use your imagination-and most importantly we avoided countries that were known hotspots for crime as much as possible. After 5 years we made it unscathed but we have friends in our group who weren’t so lucky !! One final note, with AIS today even though sailing videos are not usually in real time for safety reasons( especially when there are hot bikinis on board). All the bad guys have to do is look on AIS!! Turn it off at anchor and before arrival!

There are very few channels which discuss a safety plan. It's similar to the weather, it can kill you if you don't know the situation and have a plan. 1. know the situation, 2. keep your OPSEC, 3. have a network of security. 4. know the law and resources, 5. have a physical plan like ring camera, lights, voice commands, etc 6. Don't get drunk enough you can't respond effectively. 7. This is not a movie, take a reality check, DEI is not there, if you're a single female you are in danger. Wake the F up!
Chris - great advice. To re-enforce your advice about dinghy names - I leave a dinghy for 6 to 10 weeks at a time close to my holiday mooring and yacht. Of course it is not named, it’s anonymous. I found leaving it for that time the seat and oars would go missing. I got into the habit of deflating the dinghy, banning the oars and the seat in a bin bag and covering it with mud. I also befriended some live aboards - I have now stopped being a victim. Those Spear It Annimal guys need to heed that great advice - love the bear mace too. My yacht locally has a walk through transom but is on a marina finger under cameras my yacht on the mooring does not have that but is covered in bird netting. It is difficult to get aboard. Nobody has tried yet but I like the idea of the camera and the lights. Another great video …
Thank you for your advice eg. dinghy (yes we put the name on it ☠️ but that it’s easy to take off), cameras etc. We are at the beginning of our cruising adventures and definitely will make adjustments. Yes, we have 2 guard dogs (GSDs) on the boat when we are gone but it never hurts to have more security. Thank you!
Hey Chris....I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. They were EXTREMELY lucky. A couple of things....I was concerned about safety when chartering out of St Lucia. I wanted to bring pepper spray with me. After a call to the consulate I was told pepper spray was not legal in St Lucia. Great. Last year while chartering in Grenada, our boat was not fully cleaned at the appointed time. We were told to leave our luggage and we would do the captain brief on the boat next door. Ok....Moorings crew onboard, should be safe. Wrong! We get back, to find Angel's bag had been rummaged and $300 was gone. The base was upset, cops could give a shit, she was out $300 bucks. ( Can't trust ANYBODY) Crime crime and more crime sadly...dinghy thefts out of control in the Windwards. Since we left Grenada, a couple were killed on their anchored boat off of Grand Anse Beach by a couple of escaped prisoners. Yea, I think it's a grand idea to go chase some local bad guys into their island hood for a scooter...NOT!

Just about everything you say here is almost word-for-word what I was hearing in my head when I watched the episode in question. To think what might have happened, all because of a scooter...wow. I guess it got them views, so, whatever. One of the best bits of wisdom I've heard from the world of cruising is, when in a foreign port, when asked by a local about your situation, to drop the name of some vessel you have seen in the anchorage and marina that is big, expensive, and fully crewed... tell them you came from that boat. Tell them there are always three big guys on watch, all ex-military. Etc.
Love the idea of the dinghy name. Never thought of it. You have to have the mindset that there are criminals every where. I sail in the US and I don’t ever leave my boat unlocked when I am not on board. It’s just common sense.
A fellow cruiser in Mexico watched his inflatable being stolen, so he went after them. Instead of calling the Federales he confronted them, and he was shot. He survived but ended up being flown back to U.S. Now was it worth it?
@markpeter1968 when they saw their scooter they should have simply called the authorities and had them come out , no go tonthem after you've chased locals all over the island and almost been assaulted with a rock
Groovy episode, putting out some very good, safety advice for travelers to anywhere. For the most part the real locals are not your friends on this islands. A lot of them are poor, and tourists are like piggy banks, and those banks are like taking candy from a baby. Be smart, know your surroundings, and don't do stupid things.
Wow, that was raw and informative. Chris, tell me, is there a resource where we can plan trips to different islands. Something that has high crime areas identified?
Not to throw race into it well yes, too slow race into it, but most of these islands where stuff happens as predominantly black. And after hearing multiple stories like this and us traveling to the islands and always makes you cautious when dealing with the locals. @@ChasingLatitudes LMAO. One day when I get a boat and have you sail with us for 7 days, you'll see how bad sailors can really be. I better have plenty of diesel.
People from 1st world countries need to understand that 1. these places often dont have police / justice system that will actually go after robbers and alike unless they get caught red handed. Like literally with bloody hands. Its the same in places like the PH or TH. 2. Going after a group of guys for something like a scooter is asking to end up dead in a ditch. These guys hanging arround in those little shops sometimes have no jobs. No perspectives to get an own house or business or well paying job and certainly no 500000$ boat. They mind even be drunk or on other drugs. Probability is high that these guys have ZERO things to loose in their life. And I mean ZERO. They dont care if they slice you open to help out their friend you just pushed of a scooter. Their life mind even be ending up better with a year or so in jail. Than some air headed tourists come along and want to teach them a lesson on their island?? No wonder people end up dead. Tourists need to be aware of the wealth gap.
Thanks for highlighting safety info. Should be common sense but you had to make it for a reason because people think they won’t ever be a target or victim.
True. There's a bar half a block from my house (in a small town)... I go in there maybe once a year, and if I were in there and some stranger started asking me questions related to where I live, who else lives there, and what I have, they would get NOTHING from me. It's pretty obvious if you're not too naive (or wasted) to see it. These punks only prey on the weak.
What if the whole story was staged? Ppl can do nasty things for some clicks nowadays... :( Thanks for the hints anyway, they are pretty useful to prevent being a victim.
@@ChasingLatitudes just think about the guy who intentionally crashed a plane. So, for me it's a bit strange they robbed a boat and didn't go further than the cockpit while inside full with valuable laptops and so. But you know better than me how these things are going in reality.

You are victim blaming, and it doesn't matter how dumb these people are, they are not guilty. At one point you say, 'nothing against the island'! Unbelievable. Why don't you criticise the police for not doing anything? Or the society as a whole for not protecting tourists who are, after all, bringing in much needed money?

One constant in places like that is corruption. There are three possible sources of steady income in most cases: Tourism, thievery, and corruption. And despite bad reviews, official warnings and scary YT videos, there are always tens of thousands of clueless, naive, entitled, drunken ding dongs flocking to these islands every season, making a spectacle of themselves and not taking basic security measures. None of the locals, be they cops, tourist service workers, or gang--bangers, have any compelling reason to care or change anything they do. The money will keep washing ashore, and each will grab their share by their chosen method.

A fellow cruiser in Mexico watched his inflatable being stolen, so he went after them. Instead of calling the Federales he confronted them, and he was shot. He survived but ended up being flown back to U.S. Now was it worth it?
Never worth it
Not even financially. The medivac flight alone probably cost more than the dinghy was worth.
What should he have done? Just accept the theft?
@markpeter1968 when they saw their scooter they should have simply called the authorities and had them come out , no go tonthem after you've chased locals all over the island and almost been assaulted with a rock
@@markpeter1968 Given the outcome: yeah.
As I've always said... ''Desperate people do desperate things'' !!!
Yeah man, spent 6 months in the Caribbean as a kid. It was wildly dangerous and that was before we got to Trinidad for carnival lol
Wow, that was raw and informative.
Chris, tell me, is there a resource where we can plan trips to different islands. Something that has high crime areas identified?
Noonsite
Not to throw race into it well yes, too slow race into it, but most of these islands where stuff happens as predominantly black. And after hearing multiple stories like this and us traveling to the islands and always makes you cautious when dealing with the locals. And I too, am guilty of not trusting the locals as well and keeping my distance sorry but I mean this world is crazy
They could take a bottle the guy drank from for a DNA sample... 😂
lol that DNA sample is wild
great suggestions, how about a video on all the youtubers boats getting destroyed, gone with the Wynn, sailing doodles, vagabond, and motor yacht loon, what's going on??
lol TH-cam sailors are not sailors is the problem
@@ChasingLatitudes They mostly seem to be people who live on sailboats. It's always amusing they complain when it gets windy.
@davidweiss8401 always right ? They are like omg 20kts of wind is a hurricane
@@ChasingLatitudes LMAO. One day when I get a boat and have you sail with us for 7 days, you'll see how bad sailors can really be. I better have plenty of diesel.
@@BillJohnston-y7o 🤣🤣
We’re ok then as travellers from the U.K. we are already a third world country, so do know how to survive surrounded by savages.
Great advice Chris. You always need to be situational aware. Would you say that it is safer to be at one of the smaller remote islands?
Thank you thank you
Great subject, Chris... Also, one too few consider and take precautions for...
Happy New Year, BTW! Now we can all get back to work!
TC!
👍😎👍
Great video, great advice 👍 👏
Another great common sense lesson Chris. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice points. Same is true in Europe and esp, true south and east of Europe. Just sayn'
You did a very nice video a few years back on boat security :)
Thanks for highlighting safety info. Should be common sense but you had to make it for a reason because people think they won’t ever be a target or victim.
agree, no one talks about saftey nearly enough
Good advice even for domestic living 😊
100% agree
Do you have a link for a sporty looking, giant-ass, bear mace holster? 😂😂😂
Yes Captn Chris best way to avoid paying the dumb tax DONT PAY THE DUMB TAX - PAY , PAY PAY attention it’s FREE , fair winds
What if the whole story was staged? Ppl can do nasty things for some clicks nowadays... :( Thanks for the hints anyway, they are pretty useful to prevent being a victim.
Now I have no idea who is making things up and who is not
I doubt very much this was made up.
@@ChasingLatitudes just think about the guy who intentionally crashed a plane. So, for me it's a bit strange they robbed a boat and didn't go further than the cockpit while inside full with valuable laptops and so. But you know better than me how these things are going in reality.
@kobboy007 You do have a point..laptops, drones,..why weren't they taken.
@@mattheishman170 A 2000 drone was taken.
Those sailing youtubers are desperate for interesting content. The theft video was gold for them - it probably made 10x times what the scooters were worth.
Why have security cameras turned on when the authorities just laugh at you?
Thank you
Thank you
Go with the"big bad to the bone" bear mase😅😂
HAHHAH
Rule#1 is actually : Always travel with a dozen large men that look like pirates, carry weaponry, and bribe the local police before mooring. 😅
I watched some of their videos
Nice couple

I have not watched more tthan maybe 3 maybe 4....They both use to have their own channels as I remember it. I think the young lady use to have a channel with her sister.
Concerning the dinghy name, I’ve never been to the abc islands but I read once that your dinghy had to be identified as TT (tender to) your boat name in those islands.
Nope
Thanks, good info!
Even if there is such a low, I can't imagine it being enforced in any meaningful way in that region.
what to consider is that Sasha is dutch and therefore was in her own country (let's say one of the two countries).
Is that a joke ? She's a us citezen
@ChasingLatitudes nop, one does not prevent the other
@henriaboukrat579 it 100% does, she's never spent a single day in that country , she's an American from Dutch decendants, that in no way makes her a local
At no moment do you criticise the islanders? The police? A society that is so immoral that crime and violence are the norm? You are victim blaming, and it doesn't matter how dumb these people are, they are not guilty. At one point you say, 'nothing against the island'! Unbelievable. Why don't you criticise the police for not doing anything? Or the society as a whole for not protecting tourists who are, after all, bringing in much needed money?
Don't spit on Supermans cape...
I'm gettin me a 2001 Beneteau 311
get the best boat that works for you
I was in Trinidad in 1980.. It WAS not a safe place to be!
You are so envious. You have been in TH-cam so long however spear it animal is doing better than you. You mad!
Why would I mad ? I'm not even on camera 😂 you think I do yoitube for subscribers 😂😂 I'm not even on camera 😂 youtibe is not my job kid, subscribers don't matter silly
😂
good common sense advice.
Is bear mace legal on these islands. I would not want to go to jail for mace?
Yeah, but it wasn't planned. Capt. Said he would have done it differently. Thank God, survivable moments.
Bad things are never planned, thats why we must be prepared to act accordingly
Maybe they are worried they are related
Oh come on! Selling a DNA kit! Every successful TH-cam sells advertising space. Maybe that's why they are successful.
Young, what can you say. Unfortunately as a travel, adventure TH-camr your got to do shit that gets the views. Well the DNA kits actually pretty appropriate for when they find the bodies in a shallow grave on a beach somewhere. Dumber then dumb but I bet the video's getting some hits. Would hate for them to stop making video's Love Spirit Animal.
if they get past Venezuela, then watch out in Columbia,
😂😂😂😂.... pure gold.... its like Australian people..have too tell you value of their stuff..like my boat is 2.8... blah....😂
Mr. know it all fruity loop voice makes click bait out of superior sailing channel for monitory gain. Your neon flashing jealousy is over the top.
You might get away with bear mace on your boat, perhaps disguised as something else, but don't know how happy anyone would be if you carried it onshore. Now pity the poor cruise passenger who can't get on their cruise boat with anything remotely defensive. No wonder the cruise lines usually leave before dark.
Now do you have your Emergency Backup Power Supply yet? Not sure how stable PR's electric supply is going to be in the future.

Boat should look a bit shabby to avoid targeting. Get informed and familiarise with local customs before getting there today it is easy. Use common sense. Case the place where you are before being the loudest there.
No they were probably trying to slow them down then Rob them that's y the scooter take mabye

I didn't double check but I think that's their names?
Haha wild right
Dude you are so on point! I’m getting tired of seeing these dumba$$ “kids” ruining this format. They are extremely lucky they weren’t hurt. Just subscribed to your channel. Thanks.
I don't buy your premise. Tourism supports their economy so why would they ignore crime? Crime chases away their income.
There’s something to be said for good people standing up for what is RIGHT! Never underestimate the stand up for what’s right attitude.

Folks gonna target TH-camrs I think when the word gets around how wealthy they can be
Don't worry, they were probably bragging themselves going on about how wealthy they were. Saying "I'm living the dream man.. I'm living the dream."
