Ls and k swaps are so popular because of how easy it is. Same as the old small block chevys, they where such a common swap because they where one of the easiest engines to swap into anything, where fairly simple and reliable, and where put in so many vehicles that they where cheap to buy, fix, and maintain. Same idea with k series and ls, they came in so many different things that the engines themselves and parts for them are cheaper because of the availability. Supply and demand
Another reason is size a lot of v6's and v8's are wide and dont fit in a lot of engine bays. The ls is extremely compact. 302 and 351 swaps used to be very common but when Ford changed to the mod motors they were a lot bigger.
@@marchog5276 the ls is not extremely compact lol. Theres such a dumb trend going on trying to paint ls engines as light and compact and frugal... Theyre not. GM had a book that you could buy direct from them that told you exactly how to make 1400+ hp using the LSJ Ecotec 2.0 motor. It was broken down in 100-200hp brackets and went in great detail on why/how the stock parts would fail. Never seen a manufacturer put out so much detail on an engine prior tot his. I personally owned a modified 2005 supercharged Cobalt SS making 300hp to the wheels on the dyno. I might have that book in storage somewhere. The second version of the cobalt when GM switched from a supercharged 2.0 to a turbocharged 2.0 engine in '07 was even better than the one I owned. In the end, front wheel drive was the limiting factor on the Cobalt. It would have been so much better with RWD or even better an AWD setup similar to the WRX. For just about $23k out the door, it was one heck of a car and served me well for 10 years. The "Victory Red" paint was absolutely stunning in the daylight and didn't fade like other red. Loved that car.
Those ecotec engines in the Saab have the engine code B207E/L/R they're the same engine, but the B207R came stock with bigger injectors. We run a bone stock B207R on 250hp as a daily driver, has about 300k km on it (about 200k miles) without drama. Just be cautious of the ECU location
Guys in my neck of the woods use a Kennedy adapter plate to mate them to a VW gearbox, with implement tires on a rail buggy, it'll out climb any dirt bike...
I had one that was SRT, making 288hp at the wheels with the street tune. While at reasonable power targets the LNF was better, I don't think you could build one to the 1400+ hp you could get out of an LSJ.
Great video. The only issue I have with the "go to your local junkyard" is these days most of the junkyards have gotten modern and don't want to part out things directly to you but rather just auction the car and or the motor online. I miss the old pick and pull days.
@@danschlorff993That's pretty awesome. I've got that motor in a Jaguar and it's great. Especially mated to the 8speed ZF gearbox. Are you pushing about 250hp?
5:51 ok so for those that don’t know the LFX came from the original Holden High Feature V6 first appeared in the VZ commodore and probably some other GM vehicles in the US, these engines were renowned for timing chain failures and oiling issues due to a few issues including the engine requiring more regular matenance and a poor PCV and rocker cover design, the later engines were good there was even a dedicated LPG or Propane engine called the LWR which had changes to accommodate the alternative fuel, from my experience the LFX engine was the change we needed from Holden I’m sure other GM brands had there input in this engine but the HFV6 or Aloytec or rattletec will always be a Holden Engine
I had an 08 jetta with that motor. I bought it new and finally got rid of it at 345K miles. I put an awe exhaust on it just because it sounds so unique and I wanted it louder. Loved it.
Some guy swapped his NA Miata with a 2.3 ecoboost, put a big turbo on it and made 475whp with a bone stock motor, those lil ecoboosts are tough little engines, another underrated ford engine is the Cyclone 3.7 V6, which has been proven to handle 650-700hp on stock internals, the 2.7T Audi/VW engine was also used in the Audi Allroad, in an automatic and a manual, for the EcoTec don’t forget about the LNF 2.0T out of the later cobalt SS’s
Finally some good facts, I'm glad you mentioned the ecotec 2.0t from the Cobalt, such an underrated car, if they had put that engine on the Cruze, it would've been a game changer.
Gotta 2013 Mazda 3 that needs a motor. (Originally had a 2.0 skyactive) I'm curious if the 2.3 ecoboost would bolt up to the trans? 330hp in that little car would make it a sleeper.
OK let me say one thing real quick. The LSJ motor is no joke, that motor is an absolute beast for small cars like the cobalt it came in back in 2008. My dad had a Cobalt SS and upgraded the LSJ to a stage 2 supercharger kit and improved internals, and it made somewhere around 700HP I think. Unfortunately, it was totaled due to some guy running a red light and t-boning it, so I only ever rode around in it back when I was 2 to 3 years old. But I remember everything about the car, shiny metallic silver, carbon fiber hood, sleek 5 spoke wheels painted black. car looked like it came straight out of fast and furious and I loved it just as much as my dad did. I plan to build one of my own some day, just gotta find time and money. But yeah, 100% get an LSJ and shove it into like a mini, miata, MG, Abarth, or any other small car that will fit the motor, and it will become one of the best track toys you'll ever drive
Just look up n52/n51 pistons. They are as thick as a pancake. Rings have no chance to keep it from burning oil. The motor is a magnesium aluminum blend block, talk about bolts stripping... All in the name of gas milage. The list goes on. Stay away
4.2 inline gm 6 with a turbo is a great unusual swap that I really enjoy seeing. There’s a 5th gen camaro with one swapped in and that’s close to 1000 hp.
Yooo Calvin!! I wanna shov a 4200 in a single cab Colorado! Split exhaust to make it sound like those vintage datsubs! 290 hp? Are you kidding? My. Ka24 could never
Me and my buddy's Ecotec LSJ swapped our mid 90's W body Monte Carlo that we race in 24 hours of Lemons. almost 150 pounds lighter, can use a 5 speed manual from the donor car, and even on stock boost, she scoots a lot better than the V6 could ever dream of. Problem is the platform is 20 years old and only a handful of companies are left that support it's aftermarket.
My 2011 E90 N52 is the best car I have ever had. Being a college student prevents me from paying dealer prices for maintenance, so I can attest to these engines being easy to work on. They leak oil as all BMWs do though.
My 2000 Ford f150 with a 4.2L V6 has over 320,000 miles on it. runs and drives like butter, I can shift the manual transmission into gears with my pinky. only maintenance it has is oil change every 4,000 miles, one or two coolant flushes, and air + fuel filters along with new spark plugs a while back. Damned reliable truck. should get another 100k miles ezzz. Love ya Donut!
My addition to the list would be the Volvo T5 swap! Those are some really reliable engines that come with turbo, sound great, plus i5’s aren’t as common these days, though this is quite an infamous engine here in Europe. Can get loads of power for relative cheapness
Known here in the UK as a "police engine" as big Volvos were common for motorway cops. Someone I know who did drive one said it didn't feel like a sports car, but it always had more power available no matter how fast you were already going.
Honda's turbo L15 will start supplementing the k series swaps. It comes in a few models, factory turbo, with manual and awd options while being compact and lightweight. L15 supply will go up as K series goes down making it more affordable. Plenty of older platforms used the L series in hybrid and NA formsfor easier engine mounting. Swapping the drivetrain from a 10th gen Si into a CR-Z would absolutely rip.
I just replace an engine in an accord. K20c4, it pulls really well, awesome engine. Not that great to work on, but is fast and maybe reliable? Idk really. It came from and RDX, so is probably available in the US.
What makes me laugh is they used the 2.3 ecoboost which I have heard plenty of tuners hate on because the engine can't handle the extra power like the 2.0 ecoboost
@@tacticalbacon9361There’s a reason for the option of starting with a 2.0 short block and putting the 2.3 head on when truly building a RS. I’ve windowed two engines in my RS with minimal mods and that’s after they messed up and installed the wrong head gaskets at the factory.
If you're going for anything from GM you either go with the Opel/Vauxhall C20XE or C20LET. They're way more successful in Motorsport than anything of similar size coming out of Japan, in both touring car, production car racing as well as the WRC. When the C20XE came out in the Opel Kadett GSi and its derivatives it made more power than the V8's Chevy was selling in the US like the Iroc-Z and the rest.
Was looking for a Vauxhall/Opel comment, popular swap where I am. My addition was the Volvo T5 swap, forgotten the code for that engine but I do remember how reliable and how much power you can get from them.
Saab b204l Will fit in a ton of stuff, basically open source ecu tuning, easy to tune and get tons of torque and power out of. But the transmissions are kinda weak
The trans out of the 9-5 is a lot better, but that engine, b235, needs pistons to handle power. As far as I know the 9-5 trans won’t easily mate to the b204/b234 :(
Saab b234 for the win if your trying to make power on a stock engine. The b204/newer g.m. designs are designed for older people. The cams make power down low so it "feels fast" to people who are afraid of limiter . I made 445 ft pounds and over 400 hp on in my Saab 9000 on 27 pounds. I've seen b234's hold 550hp. Limiting factor is the head bolts. The heads will start to walk around after 25 psi with out studs. Studs only allow slightly more boost. Pistons can break rings really only if you have a crap tune/ too small a turbo / hot air charge... On standalone, with a good tune / stock 9000 aero timing, the head gasket issues from the head moving around is the limiting factor. I put over 30,000 miles on mine with over 25psi. It was installed with 111,000 miles. Sold it around 145,000, running great.
@@Drew-i8g which turbo were you running? I have a 9000 with the stock aero turbo and a relatively mild tune and it’s plenty fun but do eventually want to throw on a bigger one
@@chrisdodging I've heard Forced Performance turbos are really good swaps for the Saab 4-cylinder motors. they mainly build stuff for the Evo DTM world, but use the same flanges as Saab, and they use stock appearing turbo housings, so you don't need a massive turbo to gain an extra 2-300hp.
Engine swaps are super popular in the starion/conquest community, but im a diehard turbo g54b fan. With a few tweaks and gentle mods, you can double the power output, and that makes these 40 year old cars drive like modern cars.
A engine that became popular is the ford/ mazda 2.5. A lot of NC Miata people are swapping their 2.0’s for them and boosting them and making 400whp on the stock engine. I swapped a 2.5 into my mazda3 7yrs ago and it’s been really reliable. Made 185/183 in a 2800lb car. I’m glad people are starting to do more swaps than ls or k swaps.
The 2zz-ge is underrated FWD engine. CRAZY light with the 6spd transmission and they arent expensive. 190hp stock and with the MWR supercharger kit, you are making power with lesser weight than most stock 4 banger engines alone - without the transmission. If you can locate a Matrix XRS transmission, you can also have AWD/RWD
I've had one of those in my Japanese Runx. Was a fun motor but not as efficient as honda motors and kinda fragile. full bolt ons and powerfc maamgement yielded me about 190 to the wheel. Compared to my 1600 honda motor that made 195 to the wheel. Granted sig ificantly more compression, cam, ITBs and full exhaust on the honda but still. 2ZZ was fun but limited.
Have a Pontiac Vibe (hurhur) with that engine and 6 speed transmission. Bought it for cheap just because I wanted a car with a manual transmission. It's fun with the what, 8600 redline. That combo is not nice on the clutch. Whatever, those are cheap.
A very fun engine, but unfortunately it's just not as cheap as it used to be, for MR2 owners the price gap between a 2ZZ swap and a K or 1.8T is closing
The 3.6 from gm is amazing. Some Cadillacs we’ve had in the shop come from the factory with twin turbo v6s and they absolutely punch. I have a 2015 Colorado with the 3.6 and it’s amazing. Plenty of power for whatever I need, sounds great, and have 140k miles with absolutely no issues.
As someone who’s helped swap several blown EcoTec’s. It was bittersweet to hear it @ 13:53 They are great engines none the less but the blocks are made of this styrofoam style hard pressed aluminum and they just don’t hold up well.
My friend is about to junk his ecotec because of oil starvation issues just from regular use under 200k kms. Who the fuck in their right mind would be looking at this engine to make power
Just gonna throw this out here because the ecotec engine line is pooped on a lot but ive never had issues with it. There is a guide that I found years ago when i contemplated upgrading my powerplant and it was quite an extensive guide. It gave a breakdown of what parts needed to be upgraded and the metals used in order to achieve very specific power levels as well as rev limits. The redline breakdown exceeded 7.5k and even gave what was required if you were planning on sustaining high revs. The power levels capped out at 1400hp so it is possible to get up there on a NA LE5 2.4L ecotec. The most basic upgrades brought power up to 400 which is a nice round number for a baseline. Unfortunately, I havent been able to come across this document again but it exists somewhere in the ether.
The 2.4L Ecotec LEA from the 12-17 Equinox is arguably the perfect swap for a Miata. Heck, even an LE5 is still a great swap for a Miata, as it has more power and torque than the 1.8L Mazda B-series, as well as much better reliability and cheaper maintenance.
You literally showed my Grand Prix lol I bought a 2005 Grand Prix base same color and I LOVE that thing, why you guys not talking about the GM 3.8L V6 though? That's one of the most stout and robust engines, I bought this thing with 223k miles on it and it sounds and drives like a brand new car, no knock no leaks doesn't burn oil those 3.8's can run forever, my roommates uncle has a Buick Park Ave and it's at 378k miles and still runs like a champ. And they put a supercharger from factory in them for the Grand Prix too(obviously not my base model) so you can bump up from 200 to 260hp and still be stock and very reliable, and you could do some other stuff to make it rip if you wanted, Grand Prix is a SUPER underrated and slept on car, and the 3.8L from GM is a SUPER slept on engine.
I thought it was weird that they mentioned swapping the 2.0 liter into a Grand Prix, which should already have the 3800 in it. And yeah, I believe ZZPerformance got a stock internal 3800 up to around 400hp, and their beefed up version was 870 setting sub 9 quarter miles (in a grand prix). The stock tranny has to go to handle any of that though.
Here is one for you Jeep made the 4.0 straight six and then a 4.2 you can build using OEM parts from both motors like the crank and pistons from the 4.0 and the rods from the 4.2 making a 4.6. Um the aftermarket support for BMW N52's absolutely sucks! Yes there is the ESS supercharger, but everyone on the forums say that they don't really support their kit and its 5k, to blow up your motor down the road. Plus the oil leaks! gaskets, sensors, etc all cost way more that on an LS. Thats why I was going down the line of LS swapping my 530xi!

Something to note on the 2.3L ecoboost motors: Yes, Ford has put them in five different vehicles up to this point that i can think of: Focus RS, Mustang, Explorer, Ranger, and Bronco. All with varying levels of reliable and power figures. Keep in mind that the 2.3L is by far one of the more reliable motors from Fords ecoboost line, and each model of the motors has different figures. The 2.3L from the Ranger is something like 270HP and 320 lb-ft From the Explorer and Bronco, it's 300HP and about the same for Torque The mustang 2.3L makes the most power ranging from 315-330 depending on the year Its a versatile platform with an abundance of parts and its something that can be found easily and is relatively inexpensive.
Kappa platform buddy.
Solstice/ sky's. Gxp/ Redlines had the same turbo ecotec except rwd. Ar5 transmissions in those are tanks too.
Do you know what that book was called?

Hell yes, brother.
I highly suggest never swapping a n52 into anything 💀💀💀

L15's have notorious head gasket issues. Tbh, not sure if aftermarket is solving this problem, but I would certainly stay away from stock.
dude, let go of the honda thing, there are plenty of other engines out there
The L15s have weaker architecture which is why theres a lower limit to how much power they can make before the rotating assembly and/or block fails.

Saab b204l
Will fit in a ton of stuff, basically open source ecu tuning, easy to tune and get tons of torque and power out of. But the transmissions are kinda weak
The trans out of the 9-5 is a lot better, but that engine, b235, needs pistons to handle power. As far as I know the 9-5 trans won’t easily mate to the b204/b234 :(
B207R is better IMO, can make 237 to the wheels with just an off the shelf tune, it's pretty reliable and the transmission options are solid
I had one in a Matrix XRS. The only issue with that application was the clutch. The motor/tranny was great and a lot of fun to drive.
The 2ZZ never came in an AWD configuration. The Matrix XRS is FWD.

As someone who’s helped swap several blown EcoTec’s. It was bittersweet to hear it @ 13:53 They are great engines none the less but the blocks are made of this styrofoam style hard pressed aluminum and they just don’t hold up well.

Not to mention oil cooler location and the timing cover problems or the vvt solenoid issues
I did not expect to see my N52 on this video, it is an excellent motor.
Kicks looking A lot better after the refresh!
Ecotec gets its bad name from the 1.4. that engine alone is bad enough to over shadow all the good ecotecs 💀

Nissan is not doing too well these days. They have like one good car here in India, the Magnite. All their showrooms have literally that one car, it's a good car, but everything else they tried here failed.
The only time I've heard worse about a car was the Nissan Versa. Which I had the unfortunate luck to drive once. :D
Yeah I'm sure a brand new Nissan was worse than a barely running 50 year old Toyota 🙄🙄🙄
@AdultsAreTalking have you driven any modern Nissans? The ones ive unfortunately had to experience were absolutely trash vehicles. I'll be genuinely surprised if any of them even last 10 years on the road.
@@AngySumo yes my wife has one. Going on 110k miles with zero issues now. Not sure what type of experience you're expecting from a budget commuter car lol
2:28 why you gotta make me simp this hard.
Lol please do Porn
Yeah i took time to bust one to that which was a bad idea because i have a long day ahead of me
Swapping a 13B rotary into my 1957 Morris Minor 1000 😬
Speaking of the Grand Prix, my first car that survived 6 years with ample modifications and small company support, those transverse unicorns, 2006-2009 Chevy Impala SS with the LS4. That thing got abused and besides basic maintenance and tires, she was a dream. Only weak point was the torque converter/trans and even then, the rebuild kit from Triple Edge Performance fixed the issue. I miss that sleeper, with time and money, you could make those things hit over 500 at the wheels all day. Not to mention when car tuning labs threw a twin turbo kit in their Monte SS it was a damn fast car for the timeframe. Long live the grandpa sleeper lmao
Excuse me but nothing in the world trumps It's always sunny in Philadelphia for a favourite series 2:20
4 cylinders were always in the stang
Yeah but they were awful until the ecoboost
@@SnowCrashed1 Youre forgetting the McLaren developed Mustang SVO Turbo from the late 80s.
Always sense the late 70s , the first gen did not have a 4 pot
Something to note on the 2.3L ecoboost motors:
Yes, Ford has put them in five different vehicles up to this point that i can think of: Focus RS, Mustang, Explorer, Ranger, and Bronco. All with varying levels of reliable and power figures.
Keep in mind that the 2.3L is by far one of the more reliable motors from Fords ecoboost line, and each model of the motors has different figures.
The 2.3L from the Ranger is something like 270HP and 320 lb-ft
From the Explorer and Bronco, it's 300HP and about the same for Torque
The mustang 2.3L makes the most power ranging from 315-330 depending on the year
Its a versatile platform with an abundance of parts and its something that can be found easily and is relatively inexpensive.
With regular maintenance its a 200k mile motor all day
yea that wet timing belt is a no for me lil bro
0:42 Not nearly. It's been 10 years. I rolled off the dealership lot in my Ecoboost mustang 10 years ago this month.
Whats your mileage?
Starting at 10:02 when Nolan says he likes the sound of a good v6. I have a 2007 mustang v6 that sounds pretty good. It’s a pony package with a true dual exhaust (aftermarket)
VW/ Audi EA888 swaps are the big one to look out for in the VW/ Audi world. The 2.0L T EA888 is found in so sooooo many VW group cars, hatches, sedans, wagons, SUV's and so on for over 10 years.
There are plenty available and they are stout, tunable engines, with plenty of mods/ support.
What about the vortec 4200 ?
Physically long, it won't fit in most smaller style performance cars. That said, I love the 4200
Coolest engine swap I've seen recently was a 2JZ swapped Volvo 245 that came to my work. I've seen them on the internet, but that's the first time I've seen one in real life. Kind of surreal to hear 2JZ sounds out of a Volvo
Ok there just sick. Was it a wagon or sedan?
@spideybuildscars Wagon. One of my old coworkers had a LS swapped 245, that was fun too. There's some crazy Swedish guy that did a Lambo V10 swap sleeper, it's awesome
I was checking ford crate motor prices today and actually the 2.3L crate motor that’s available to buy is 310 hp @ 5,500 rpm, 350 lb.-ft. torque @ 3,000 rpm (with 93 octane fuel) the High Output version while being advertised on the Ford Performance site is no longer available to purchase, and that HO 2.3L is the 330 HP engine. If you’re interested the 310 HP 2.3L package is $5,242 and the HO 330 HP 2.3 L package is “This part is no longer available.”
just find someone's wrecked Focus RS.
The 2.3 ecoboost is one of the best engines I’ve ever played with.
Cool part is 2017 and up they started making cast iron piston sleeves so they can handle a bit of boost. My ecoboost mustang sits a 486whp at 28lbs of boost and I’ve done the build for under 3k and I drive it over 100 miles every day
So glad to see airborn entertainment get mentioned here they’ve got some awesome stuff
I can't believe I'm watching someone say that we should swap a Porchse flat 6 for an Audi 2.7T for reliability, among other things.
There's a reason Audi went with the 4.2 V8 for the very next S4 generation.
Right??
@@clutchthepearls3062 there are likely more 2.7 s4s left than 4.2 ones. When the 4.2 blows the common move is to swap in a 2.7
Bra 4.2s are hella bad and no one wants them primarily due to the timing chain snaps. Plus they are slow
I have 2 b5 s4 and one is at 300k km original block and turbos.
2.7bit is just a 1.8t with two cylinder banks with one less cylinder on each bank. Can't find anything unreliable from them.
@ they aren’t crazy unreliable. They are just a pain in the ass to fix with how complicated they are and they have a million vacuum lines that love to leak
Is that a 454 going into high low mustang
God I hope so
@@nicolasmartin4233why would they make the mustangs slower😂😂😂
Okay look, I haven't watched yet, but "LS swap this, K swap that," is a thing for a reason. Power, reliability, and budget. The trifecta of what makes a good engine.
15:00
1) the supercharged ecotec is kinda pricey because that specific variant is pretty rare
2) Pontiac Grand Prixs already came with a supercharged V6 that is even better: the 3800 Series II/III. Stock they made 240/260hp respectively, and there are several companies making tuning parts for them.
Great fun facts I didn’t know you can just swap random engines to small cars. I loved the last segment that speedboat pickup has real turbo.😂
I found out my parents Nissan Armada has the same motor in the Ligier LMP3 car.
You know what to do now
Thats lowkey crazy lol.
it's a nissan Patrol everywhere else and the GTR and 400Z should be able to be optioned with that engine, it's actually an amazing engine (vk56), the v8 supercars used a 5.0L version, skid factory yt swapped one into a hakasuka
If I found out that my parents were butt-ugly SUVs, I’d be checking those laws that allows a a kid to emancipate themselves.
I want to marry Steph
She is probably a Lesbian
Hey back off she’s my fiance actually we haven’t gone public but you guys need to chill out she’s got a man 🥱😤😏
Once more people in the States get a hold of the Australia Ford inline 6 Turbo... you guys are gonna love it.
Crazy swaps I’m in the process of swapping a vq motor into a hardbody
You know it’s very refreshing to see a car girl on this channel, and she’s very knowledgeable too! I wanna see more of her fr ❤
These two have a good dynamic together
