Thanks for this video TJ. I grew up in Kings Park after moving to Melbourne from Canberra. I go to that IGA every few months to stock up on Maltese Pastizzi. Some of those Vietnamese restaurants have some of the best cuisine in Melbourne, in my opinion. Great video.

I'm 53. Been in St Albans for 48 years and despite the problems like any place I still love the place. My daughter bought a house only months ago in the 3021 area because like me she can see the convenience of St Albans being close to main infrastructure. 3 Stations. Freeway access in minutes. Melbourne Airport 15min run. Sunshine Hospital at your door step. Modern schools. A few people I know are kicking themselves for leaving the area decades ago.

Absolutely! St Albans has so much to offer and it's definitely getting better! I would rather be in St Albans than Springvale. It's so much closer to the city and freeway only a few minutes away & not to mention the airport! There's nothing better than getting off a 24HR flight from LA to Melb and home is only 20mins drive away. Junkies are everywhere and they are useless to our society. They need help out of plain sight.

Looks a lot safer than it was 10-15 years ago. I grew up in St Albans, went to school in St Albans, even went to uni in St Albans. Now I work down the road in the emergency department at Sunshine Hospital and we definitely see some of the characters from St Albans who are living rough. We used to walk to the station at 10pm with no troubles 30 years ago, wouldn't do it now LOL. Unlocked some memories there for me! Great video :)

My grandparents opened the first pizza shop in Alfrieda St in the late 70s, was known as la maiella after the mountain in Abruzzo, Italy.
They briefly relocated to McIntrye Rd in the mid 80s, and the shop has been tenanted since. Currently, it's a chemist smack bang in the middle opposite the IGA carpark.
Apparently, there was a Croatian butcher shop acouple shops down that was always super busy with people queing out the door.

20:56 there is a Thai massage brothel there lmao. not to overshare let's just say i had my first experience there. My Dad Named Michael who passed away in 2023, was a well known butcher in st albans, and was often the local expert, had great relationships with the Vietnamese people and was loved by everyone in the area. i've lived in Emily street, Andrea street, and even Glyndon ave. if you go to Westvale which is right next to Andrea street, there's a lovely Greek community there. Personally Alfredia street is the most ghetto i experienced, and the milk bar on main road west. Good video though, sad about the dude with the bong, i've now moved from st albans to AV, from one ghetto to another i guess. I appreciate your empathy for the people doing it rough though. i used to be an Opioid addict for 7 years, ive been clean for a while.

I lived in St.Albans in the 80's. Couldn't walk home from school without fears of getting bash. Speed was the main drug then herion took over in 90"s. People got bashed at st.albans pub every week. I Lost a lot of friends to heroin before they made 20. Some would be gangsters would always jump people and leave them in a bloody mess. St.Albans is the only place in Australia where cops would drive up and down the same road (Main Rd) all day hoping to deter crime. St.Albans was a shit hole and always will be. Most last station suburbs were shit holes.

    Nice video.
If you ask me. St albans changed? Yes.
Did it become better? Structure and safety? In a way yes.
Would you walk there at night? I would not recommend it.
There was a point where “western businesses”
Saw potential in st albans at few points.
In the 80s or even earlier had alot of western businesses. It slowly and slowly faded away.
Late 80s very early 90s still had quite a few western businesses .
    Believe it or not
St albans in alfreida street had
western computer shop owned by caucasians
    toy kingdom,
shoe shop - where the sell school shoes and doc martens etc.. owned by caucasians
They also had fosseys - it was coles but was similar to a mini kmart.
They had a variety store which was owned by maltese/ italian/ greek owners.
They even opened a block buster video because st albans had potential.
Since the - maltese, italians, greeks etc all moved out the area.
It was due to all asian migrations.
The maltese , greeks , italians etc all left st albans and went to the new estate at the time - keilor downs, taylors lakes and sydneham.
St albans then was all asians once the euros left the area.
All the shops began being all vietnamese and chinese stores.
70-80s st albans was run by euros, maltese, italians and greeks etc. it was a wog area.
90s it was a vietnamese area.
    2000s islanders started coming in
Late 2000s africans started coming in
Around 2010 indians started coming in.
I moved to australia in 1988-89.
I was the first batch of immigrants in st albans. At the time there was no asian stores.
Maybe 2 years later the first vietnamese store opened.
I saw st albans as a wog area or caucasian area believe it or not. Then i saw it become asian suburb.
In the early 90s i never saw an islander or indian or even african walking in st albans.
I remember saying to friends or family what is an islander person lol.
    I even said whats indian.
If i told you toy kingdom was there would you have believed me lol??
If i told you fosseys was there ? Now its kfl supermarket, before it was kfl that was fosseys, a mini kmart- sold clothes like
Jeans, hot wheels etc cars, chips, drinks, shirts, etc.
me and my brother used to walk there when i was about 8-9yo.
Back then they had the water fountain which was nice at the time. It had lighting at night changing color.
Then lighting stopped. I think they also took it out because it was dangerous. Such as a random drowning someones head. Due to increased crime. Different demographics now.
I also got to include. Early early 90s. Someone died at the fountain. I saw crime scene tape or police tape next morning when me and family walked to the train station to go city.
I am not sure how he died. I think from word of mouth someone drowned him or he drowned after being high or something.
That is one reason they took off the fountain. Later on alot of drug use and people who were high could drown themselves in that fountain.
It was a great fountain, i remember playing in that fountain as kids me and my brother (rip) and sister at the time.
Then it got dirty, people would throw rubbish or maybe even pee in it.
That fountain had to go. For safety.

I can also remember Fosseys and you kingdom aswell, this is the same time when they use to have the Duty Free store. You are right though, early 90s had big western shops, and now it’s changed into a mini Footscray. I can even remember someone dying in that fountain, your memory is on point!
