Stihl 046 Magnum "Box Saw" Rebuild

  • In this video I show how I rebuilt a friend's Stihl 046 Magnum that was deemed worthless by the local Stihl dealer. This 046 had relatively little wear but crankshaft bearing crapped out. This is the first time I have rebuilt a Stihl so I probably have a lot to learn but it really seemed to go pretty well. It is now ready to get back to work.

    Thanks for sharing! Enjoy watching someone else rebuild saws and small motors. The only thing i do differently, is put the crank bearings in the freezer for the night and lightly heat the cases. Drops right in.

      Glad you enjoyed it. This was the first Stihl I'd rebuilt. Normally, rebuild/restore old McCullochs. I've used the "freezer trick" on removing/installing wrist pins in pistons/connecting rods. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Nicely done, wish you were my neighbor. Stihl 046 is a great saw.

      046 is indeed a great saw. I put this one into some big oaks this past Saturday and it ran like a champ. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Thanks, I have one that I just got back from the shop who gave it back and said the piston had some damage. Funny, all that was wrong when I took it in was it was not oiling... I will be doing my own tear down and rebuild...

      Wow - I think many shops (particularly dealers) would simply rather sell a new vs. work on one that needs some work. Good luck on your rebuild. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I use 1184 on the case gasket and Dirko HT on the base gasket. I also put 1184 on the oil hose gromett and on the cylinder where the intake boot attaches. A thin coat is all that is needed. Never had a leak on any of these. The coil on your 046 got beat up by the bad bearings. Looks like you did a pretty good job.

    • @elwellboy
      @elwellboy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't heard of 1184. Thanks for the tip. Where do you buy it? Yes - the bad bearing beat the hell out of the coil. Saw runs like new. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      elwellboy three bond 1184 is its full name. I just call it 1184. You can use it anywhere on a saw but I use Dirko on the base gasket. You can use Dirko, anywhere, too, but I save it for base gaskets, only.. Walt, afleetcommand on UTube, uses 1184 on everything that needs a sealant on a saw, but Walt and I disagree on lots of things. I am a Stihl person and he a Husqvarna one.

      John Clarke thanks for the info. This was the first Stihl I’ve ever worked on to any extent. I’m a vintage hard starting’ McCulloch guy. Hope you and Walt won’t think less of me.😂😂

    Most rebuilders use permarex motoseal gasket maker. It's fuel resistant. One to watch on TH-cam is tinman's saws.

    • @elwellboy
      @elwellboy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use that sometimes as well. They're probably similar. The Stihl shop near me uses Dirco which I've used on many rebuilds. No problems so far. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    nice video. I have an 064 which ran when i bought it, but it wouldnt idle well and the carb adjustments needed to be way out to run...so I suspected it was leaking air. I rigged up a couple of rubber and metal block plates for the carb and muffler ports and sure enough it failed pressure and vacuum tests and culprit was a crankcase oil seal. I hadn't felt any play in the crank bearings in earlier testing but noticed some at this point. Tried to get away easy and see how bad it was or should I say how long it would take to ruin the new oils seal.... started right up and idled well once together, but that didn't last long.. Been busy but plan on blocking off and pressure testing again to confirm but likely will be pulling apart. Have no proper splitting tools or press but may do as you did for pressing the bearings or i have read that guys use the freezer to get crank shaft and or bearings to go into sides, etc. How did you split the crankcase?
    Hope my crankcase sides are still good enough to hold new bearings or i will need to look for aftermarket sides or complete crankcase.. please let me know of you learned any big gotchas along the way.
    Thanks for posting!

      Glad you found the video helpful. As for splitting the crankcase - I just used a plastic/rubber hammer and tapped it lightly unti it opened slightly and then used a screwdriver to pry it apart. Don't recall any "gotchas" except for reassembling the clutch & oiler - I wasn't paying attention and put it in backwards and had to redo it. Nothing serious just annoying. Good luck on yours. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@elwellboy Finally tore the case apart and the flywheel side bearing was completely shot / missing ball bearings... ordered parts and should be able to start putting together in a couple of weeks. I forgot to do a compression test before tearing it down - the piston, rings and cylinder look good, but for the sake of $30 more bucks I ordered new OEM rings as well. may have gotten away without them, but it would be sad to see low compression once back together of I had cheaped out..

    • @elwellboy
      @elwellboy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chicchoc9 Sounds great - that thing will have hand popping compression when you're done. Keep me posted.

    Your not anywhere near Dallas TX are you? I hav a ms460 that needs a rebuild and am having trouble finding someone other than a dealer to work on it

    • @elwellboy
      @elwellboy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not in the Dallas area. If you have a dealer rebuild it you might as well buy a new one. Labor rates are so high a rebuild just isn't feasible. If you're interested in a rebuild, find me (Elwellboy) on facebook and contact me via phone or message and we can discuss. Thanks for watching and commenting.
