stihl ms250 chainsaw cold start

  • The stihl ms250 chainsaw can be tricky to start if you do not follow the advised routine - there is no fuel bubble and over priming/flooding can lock it up causing some hard hydraulic lock to pull through. The way to start from cold is 2 pulls full choke , 1 at half then start on I setting (run setting). Hope this helps you. This is not the quick start version. The wood in vid was cut previous day.

    Good clear video advice. Have had MS250 for 10+ years. Mine starts like this:
    1. Chain brake ON.
    2. Full choke (right down).
    3. 3 pulls. Usually fires briefly on 3rd pull.
    4. Move Choke to half (1 click up from bottom).
    5. 3 more pulls. Normally starts on 3rd pull.
    6. Brake OFF, control saw, run for 10 secs with throttle on.
    Ready to work... usually!
    Stay safe.

    Saw arrived yesterday th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and today I cut about 3/4 cord of wood with it. Make sure you get an extension chord that is at least 12 gauge wire, minimum. This is my first electric in about 10 years, and things sure have improved. The self-sharpener works great, and it just kept cutting through some pretty decent logs. Wear your eye protection, and ear protection. Excellent saw.

    I just purchased this saw with high recommendations from our local shop, which I greatly trust. This morning, I tried to start it and it was a no go. However, I used to have a MS-210c, which I HATED for the first year. Then our Stihl vendor showed me how to start it, and it became my favorite.
    I just did exactly what is shown in this video and my new saw started with no trouble at all! I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship...
    Thanks for the tutorial!

    Got rid of my MS250 due to hard start problems and bought a MS290 farm boss to replace it. I could use the MS250 for an hour and then turn it off and spend 10 minutes trying to get it started back up again. Did a total service on it and still had hard start issues. I have around 10 stihl chainsaws and love them but out of all of them the MS250 was the most unreliable.

    hi - the chain oil is very easy to identify - when you touch it , it is sticky and stringy - it is normal to lose a little - in fact it is a good test to check that your oil feed to the chain is not blocked with sawdust (also you should learn how to take apart the chainsaw and clean it) - to check you just rev up the chain close to some dry wood and you should see some small spray of chain oil.

  • @matt0198922
    @matt0198922 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You did the starting procedure mostly correct, except for the last step. The proper way to start this saw (I have the same saw), is to set it on full choke and pull until it just starts to fire up/turn over. Then, just like you did, you flip it up to high-idle (turns choke fully off). Then, you pull on high idle until the saw actually starts (not just once like you did). The reason you do this is because leaving it on high-idle keeps the throttle trigger partially depressed, where as "run" does not, which is not optimal for cold starting.
    I can start my MS 250 in 4 pulls or less EVERY time.

    I have a Stihl 250 chainsaw which I purchased because it was suppose to be the best chainsaw according to many I talked to in my area. I already have an older Poulan chainsaw which I purchased in 2000 when we had several ice storms during that Winter here in Arkansas, but it was getting older, even though it gave me great service, and still does. Since owning the Stihl 250 new I have not gotten a good hour's work out of it, and the saw have spent many times in the local repair shop. I recently purchased a new Poulan Pro saw to help me around our rural home. I have not gotten to use it yet, but hope it is as good, or better than the old Poulan saw. The Stihl is just collecting dust since it seems to be impossible to start.

    I found this very instructional. Thanks. A buddy of mine, who is a long-time Stihl user, also told me to shake the saw upside down a few times before a cold start. Believe it or not, it seems to help. Of course, once the saw is warmed up, it starts on the first pull. It's just that first time when cold......Grrrrrrrrr.

    This was really helpful. I've had my MS250 for 4 years although it has been mostly idle for the past 3. I ran it a few months ago without problem and then let it sit with Stihl Motomix in the tank. Over the past few days I've been unable to start it. Not even a burp. At first I thought it wasn't getting reliable spark. Then I wondered if the Motomix was bad. After watching your video I realized I was clearly flooding it. Followed your steps and got it running. I don't know how they can call this an EZ start model. I miss the 362 I sold 5 years ago.

    1st I suggest using 93 octane fuel with the sthil 2cycle oil mix and ethanol free gas!This saw is one tempermental piece of equipment.I have found If you flood the unit remove the plug then 2-3 pulls to clear the cylinder and then blow off the plug or use some brake cleaner.Wiping out the carb area of any residue does help.Reinstall plug and retry in the 1st choke setting then start position.Personally after only owning this for 7 months since 10/13 this is a bad model and so wish I had chose a different model or brand at this point.The end statement is the overall reviews and specs this model is hard to start,and or keep running or restart after use.This should be the ms250 migraine seriously.

    chainsaws use quite a lot of chain oil - its not like a car where you top it up once every 6 months or 1 year, if ever - with a chainsaw you need to top up the chain oil every 2 or 3 tanks of gas - and do not forget to mix the 2-stroke oil with the gas!!!

    • @bobarmstrong2122
      @bobarmstrong2122 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously you have an easy starting one.If you read reviews you will see you are the exception. Or maybe you're a young weight lifter that doesn't mind pulling on it twenty times.My MS250 never hints on starting when on full choke, and if you pull more than 1 or 2 times on full choke it's flooded.Then it will take at least 10 pulls on FULL open throttle to clear before it fires. I'm here to find an easy way.

    *If you need a rugged, heavy duty saw but you are not a full time professional tree cutter this model will fit your needs>>>**ur2.pl/723** It has all the power you will ever need to cut through any type of wood up to about 3 feet in diameter. And it costs about half of what a pro model would and has a compression release to make it easy to start, especially for old timers like me. I have used it for one season so far to cut about 60 cords of hardwood with no problems. Would definitely recommend.*

    please note: In the video I started the saw the first time with the chain brake OFF - not a good idea in case you slip or stumble - better to start with the safety brake ON = HANDLE AWAY FROM YOU - but be careful not to rev the engine too much if the brake is on as it burns the brake.

  • @burghill1979
    @burghill1979 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hydraulic lock for your info is when oil seeps down into the cylinder and remains at the top of the cylinder filling the space of the top of the piston creating more force to turn the engine over which can ruin an engine just like that.
    A lot of American aircraft fitted with radials had that problem because young techs just jumped in and started them without draining the bottom cylinders thus causing hydraulic lock. sometimes they turn the engine by hand on the prop to check for hydraulic lock.

  • @JADEDWILLIAM
    @JADEDWILLIAM 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depending on the weather 2-5 pulls on full choke til it fires, move lever to half choke and it usually takes 2-3 pulls to fire up at which time you BLIP THE THROTTLE to bring it back to idle. If it takes more than that your saw is out of tune, you're not doing it right or both. Owner MS362,250,170.

    yeah, i was young once and probably shouldnt have been running a saw, but was, the throttle was hung up somehow or another wide open with the chain brake on, it slowly started slipping and smoking real bad. i shut the saw down and freed the throttle and tried again. the brake is still fucked up to this day. little "brrrrps" that this guy is doing is fine. it is part of our equipment checks at our firehouse to do that. rev with brake, full throttle and apply brake. its what its made to do

    I tried that and it didn't work. What I ended up doing is pull out the spark plug, dry it with a paper towel, give the cord a few cranks, then put the plug back in. After a few more pulls on normal run setting it sputtered a bit and then came back to life, putting out a lot of smoke in the process. I use medium grade fuel with 50:1 Red Max oil (I also use this for my Red Max blower). I also add a packet of crystalized stabilizer each time I fill up my 1 gallon gas container.

    you are dead right about the 250 going in to hydraulic lock if you flood it. really, it is a function of temperature and humidity. if the temperature is lower than the humidity you can flood a stihl saw in a heartbeat. cool days and high humidity means you are going to have problems. warm days with low humidity is a piece of cake. the 250 has a greater tendency to flood than, let's say, my ms271 but they will all flood if you get stupid with the cold start setting. thee only saw that I have that will crank, regardless of the temperature and humidity, is ms ms261cm.

      Remove the spark plug, more the ignition lead boot away from the plug hole in the cylinder. Give it full throttle (NO CHOKE ) and pul; the cord until you don't see a mist of fuel coming out the plug hole. Dry off your plug and inspect it for any debris. Reinstall the plug and try to start with NO CHOKE and medium to full throttle.It should fire after a few pulls
