Your best one yet. I have returned to the tree business - Pure Tree Care and have made a couple of underbids. They are the pits and it becomes a serious mind game to stay safe, not rush and swallow it up. Funny, with me it always is either 100 degrees or pouring rain when I realize! This video was reassuring in that somebody, even with your enviable experience and skill, makes errors in bids. And that is important for the rest of us to see - helps us stay sane. August, I am a full time youth pastor and I do trees part time with my two sons. Like you I love being in the trees, I love it when the vision of what we need to do unfolds and comes to pass. I love working with my sons. I've watched dozens of your videos, even the 45 minute long ones, lol. I'm in Texas so we deal with much shorter trees than you. We dont have any large equipment. Right now we climb, rig, lower, and haul away on a 16' trailer as many trips to the burn pile as it needs, lol. We even get some of the kids in the youth group to pitch in on the haul away to make a little cash. My biggest challenge right now if finding jobs. I pay $100 a month to be on Google Maps and some Google marketing and I pay for leads with Angi Leads (HomeAdvisor). I do not live in a big city, we are pretty rural. Any helpful ideas to help us out would be great! Stay safe and you are a successful artist.
Massive coincidence, I had the exact same sum of 520 be given to me for a job I under bid last summer. Customer was exactly same, said she knew I under bid and just gave me a tip at the end. Love your videos, always find some inspiration there. Keep up the solid work.

In Santa Fe, in 2008 the entire State was infested w/bark beetles and killing all the Pinion Tree's. People had to have all of them fell and either throw it away or cover it with Vesqueen under the Sun for 3mo. (it was best to throw it out), If you chipped it, it just spread the Bug's.
August- you are definitely an artist. The amount of knowledge, risk, physical expenditure, equipment, and communication is only evident from watching many (well narrated) videos from different sources to understand what you guys do on a daily basis. The fact that you are so competent in so many areas takes a bit to grasp. Thank you and your great crew for filming this remarkable life that y’all have, and obviously enjoy.

Found your page recently while researching some saws and i've stayed for the content. Great job on the videos ! I'm not in the tree business, i am a house painter but iconstantly have to bid things too. Once in awhile i will be kicking myself for underestimating a job, but i've found things usually work out in the end. This makes me think of one job in particular which i underbid. The lady was very nice, offered cold drinks, and was very accomodating in general. She even offered more cash at the end, but i stuck by my bid and thanked her for the business. I bet i got ten very good leads off of that one job along with a few repeat clients. Its a competitive market for painters where we are and that one job really seemed to shake things up and make my phone ring ! Like everything else, i believe what comes around goes around.

I’m glad it worked out in the end for you. It’s also nice to see that even legendary tree men can come in too low with a price, they’re not always a gold mine it’s usually a fine line between a good paycheck and a job you don’t get. Keep cuttin!
Great job. And great customer! When I under quote, I trick myself into feeling better. I do that by picking a stage of the completed job as the start point. For example I ignore the work done in the morning and pretend the money is for the next stage of the tree. That way I stay happy and get paid very well for the last part of the job! I also have a company policy of only working for nice customers. For the pain in the arse neighbour, I invite them up the tree to help. That normally shuts them up. If they complain about the tree being removed, I offer them a seedling of the specimen so they can have their own tree at their place. Cheers Rich. New Zealand.

Everyone underbids once in a while, I had a partner who used to do it all the time, couldn’t understand it until I figured out he’d been basing his times on the usual pub fairy stories that guys come out with ! You were lucky there, at least they were your customers trees !!

Thanks for part 2 August. Its always interesting how things have a way of turning out ok in the end. I think honesty goes a long way clients, when you find yourself in a pickle. You obviously didn't up the price on the extra work, and the client saw this, hence the tip! Well done! Great posting, thanks.

It was even more interesting watching this video, because I had an identical situation happen to me. I bid a tree that had a broken leader in it, over the customers home. So it needed to be taken care of sooner then later. An in the rush I was in, I underbid it , but went through with it anyway. It turned out that in the end they were very impressed, and happy, with all i did that they tipped me $500 dollars to, (still to this day it's the biggest tip I have ever gotten). I love how things can work out, and pay off, for all the hard work and effort put in even when it's unexpected.
under biding happens. its nothing like learning a expensive lesson. me im hard headed and under bid at least 2 or 3 times a year. then there is times ive walked away. also i hate when a customer trys to get you to bid a tree from a picture. i did it once and wont ever do it agian.you still honored your bid thats respectable. ive learned to walk away from a job that dosent want to pay. keep doing a awesome job no matter what.im glad the customer hooked you up in the end. great prospective and great information. i hope underbid jobs steer clear for you guys.keep up the awesome content.
I am old and retired. For some reason I love to watch tree cutting videos. I know it can be dangerous work. I cut a number of easy trees and they always went right where I wanted them to until they didn't. It is always interesting to watch people cutting trees that know what they are doing and people that don't know what they are doing.

Talking about perspectives, seeing your videos from your vantage point up in these tall trees, makes me realize why tree removal cost so much. Years ago I had a neighbor’s tree removed by crane over my house. I think people don’t really know how much weight there can be, either. I like you honesty.
As soon as I see one of you video's on that is the first thing I watch. They always inspire me and. Just make my day better. I know that sounds weird but I don't know how to put it into words. I see Buckin picked up an Echo. He watch's you close. So be kind and love one another right know.
I've had that in my line of work too, sometimes. I've learned to take my time for the quote and not listen to bravado billowing up inside. And then, once you know you're underbid, you need to make just as fine a job of it as usual, or you'te in for lots more work or worse trouble. Such as getting hurt because of haste, or getting complaints about sloppy work and having to come back and do it again. Thanks for your openness on this August
August, you seem to be one good egg! I used a borrowed chainsaw once to cut tagged trees and now am hooked on your channel and wished I would a been a lumberjack, sort of. I like that you appreciate trees as well.
I totally agree with your comment about walking up to the base of the tree before you bid it. Diameter matters so much when you get into rigging scenarios. I have even debated putting my harness on and throwing my lanyard around a tree before I bid it.

I appreciate the honesty about the fact that everything doesn't go perfectly every time on every job. It helps us less experienced people in similar kinds of businesses some relief in that we aren't the only ones who make mistakes.
Right on, I'm enjoying your videos, all of them. Until I had a Stroke, I fell tree's too. And climb, but never used rope's. Just a harness and lanyards and climbing equipment w/ 2" gaffs. Only Pine trees and Blue Spruce trees to climb in Santa Fe, NM. I liked all of them. Very cool. Keep up the good work.
Sometimes, to Drum up some business in a neighborhood, I would do a Person's Tree's lightly trimmed or maybe even more, for a smaller price. If they lived right on the Corner where everyone could see the job that was being done. It works very well for advertising your work. And people who wanted there's done were giving me their names and addresses all day long. It really paid off.

I feel I have made every single "Post" overbid retrace statement that you listed. At $1800, must have seen it as a $2000 tree and you could do it more efficient than the next guy, at least that is a mistake I have done and will do again, I'm sure of it. Win some, you lose some! So sorry about the under bid. Sometimes you really don’t know until you actually get into the job what the extent of the job is. You’ll get your blessings in another way. Your client knew they were getting a steal, she probably had gotten other bids and realized she’d better hire you ASAP. Let by gones be by gones and move forward. You sound dispondant, tomorrow is another day. I would never leave my house when tree movers are there. Sounds like a job from hell, but you got through it. Be blessed! God always makes a way, and He did as she realized You under bid the job so she did compensate. Glad it was a somewhat happy ending.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Great video as always . It takes a true professional to put out their mistakes . I am not a true tree guy, however, I do some trimming and firewood sales to pay for my chainsaw addiction . What I was glad to see was that even a pro like you can misjudge a tree . After I give a bid I can't believe how in one day the limb is now ten feet higher or how could that 25 ft tree in one week now be 40 ft . I always look forward to your videos and the day you quite making them just know this guy will be wearing a black arm band . Thanks !!!!

Also, I appreciate you explaining your use of ropes and your rigging. Saw the vid where you had to pull a couple of big Fir(?) trees way off from their natural fall line. i will say this for you, your videos are different. i guess that is why i keep coming back. live is going to throw curve balls at you, under bid, cranky neighbors... just keep being the professional you appear to be and everything usually works out in the end. wish you were in my area, i would love some of this wood for woodworking/wood turning projects.
Great work, I've underestimated loads of tree quotes. They often look more challenging once you get the job and start work, I think it can be human nature to want the job and see it as being easy and underestimate quotes.A builder once said to me; 'Think of a price then double it..!' If only that would get us the work we'd all be fine. Competition puts a stop to that mostly!
Love this video and very honest. You are like my plumber, he always gives me an end price that in my view is too low, I always pay him extra. Finding a tradesman like that is like finding gold.

Dude. Coolest customers ever! Don't feel bad. Your not the only one. I just got done with a job that I bid at a week and a half. Three weeks later we were done. I also underbid the material by about $2,000. I made about 10 bucks an hour on the job. Better than breaking even I guess. Worst part is I've been doing this for 25 years so I have little to no excuse :-) crap happens. As long as we learn from it it wasn't a loss

Here on east coast that's 4 to 6 all day .course hard to tell on camera..every tree I ever under bid is do to not standing under tree then doing walk threw. This is the reality of owning a small business. Some (probably most) employees talk bad about the boss when he isn’t around, they think they’re doing the “real work” and he is sipping iced tea at the plantation and cracking a brand new whip. Reality is, there are plenty of days filled with bad news, unfortunate circumstances, consequences of mistakes employees make and more. I’ll stick to poverty-class freelance work, I say “no” and walk away from jobs a fair amount. We love ya buddy, and you’re too damn smart to give a damn what some manchild on TH-cam has to say about what you’re doing wrong
Truthfully, I'm surprised that you underbid the job, but you're human. We usually learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat them, but it could happen again. Sometimes there's legitimate reasons why things go the way they do. I'm sure you're over it and happy that it all worked out in the end with a considerate client. That says a lot about you and the satisfaction felt upon completion.
I wish you'd keep prices secret....now I know how bad my prices really are....I like the work too much I guess...and lord knows everybody has to get some kind of a (deal)...
August, first - thank you for your honesty and that you “own it” . So incredibly refreshing, motivating and inspiring! Also have you attempted to calculate and then allocate cost per hour of operation for chipper, CTX, bucket truck etc. It gets interesting when one finances equipment as well. In our line of work passion drives our motivation often. Calculating true cost of doing business often is overlooked. We can see clearly what people cost but the often hidden cost of personnel training, cost of loosing good folks, wear and tear of machines etc is what erodes the bottom line and makes good tight bidding harder. Anyway thank you again for all you have contributed to all of us in so many ways!
August I have enjoyed many of your videos, but the underbid scenarios are just killers. After you burn up the time expected on site when you first viewed it only to realize the work is only half done....then you have to finish....knowing you are not only working for free - you are paying your crew too! August, it turned out good because of two things. First, you are a good guy, you treat people right, and just like there is bad Karma there is good Karma as well. Good things happen to good people. Second, because God looks after his believers, even covering their rears when they do stupid stuff...like stupid low underbidding. Man...you are one good guy. Awesome video! I've had my fair share of underbidding stuff (from the truck and from a distance) I figured my hourly rate and equipment if we did a tree like that we'd be at 2800-3200 with the stump. Yet in the Kansas City area, there are a few big firms (Hack companies that do shit pruning but still growing like crazy, cartwright tree (Eric Cartwright and his wife Cheryl who both own tow hack companies) Eden tree, and Elite tree) they'd constantly be bidding this tree between $800-$1500 depending on how bad they need the work)

I also have a company policy of only working for nice customers. For the pain in the arse neighbour, I invite them up the tree to help. That normally shuts them up. If they complain about the tree being removed, I offer them a seedling of the specimen so they can have their own tree at their place. Cheers Rich. New Zealand.

Everyone underbids once in a while, I had a partner who used to do it all the time, couldn’t understand it until I figured out he’d been basing his times on the usual pub fairy stories that guys come out with !

Love the honesty, the folks that blow sunshine up your arse that never have a loss irk me. They aren't honest, they're egos just can't handle a it.
It was even more interesting watching this video, because I had an identical situation happen to me. I bid a tree that had a broken leader in it, over the customers home. So it needed to be taken care of sooner then later. An in the rush I was in, I underbid it , but went through with it anyway.
It turned out that in the end they were very impressed, and happy, with all i did that they tipped me $500 dollars to, (still to this day it's the biggest tip I have ever gotten). I love how things can work out, and pay off, for all the hard work and effort put in even when it's unexpected.
under biding happens. its nothing like learning a expensive lesson. me im hard headed and under bid at least 2 or 3 times a year. then there is times ive walked away. also i hate when a customer trys to get you to bid a tree from a picture. i did it once and wont ever do it agian.you still honored your bid thats respectable. ive learned to walk away from a job that dosent want to pay. keep doing a awesome job no matter what.im glad the customer hooked you up in the end. great prospective and great information. i hope underbid jobs steer clear for you guys.keep up the awesome content.
I am old and retired. For some reason I love to watch tree cutting videos. I know it can be dangerous work. I cut a number of easy trees and they always went right where I wanted them to until they didn't. It is always interesting to watch people cutting trees that know what they are doing and people that don't know what they are doing.

Talking about perspectives, seeing your videos from your vantage point up in these tall trees, makes me realize why tree removal cost so much. Years ago I had a neighbor’s tree removed by crane over my house. I think people don’t really know how much weight there can be, either. I like you honesty.

I've had that in my line of work too, sometimes. I've learned to take my time for the quote and not listen to bravado billowing up inside. And then, once you know you're underbid, you need to make just as fine a job of it as usual, or you'te in for lots more work or worse trouble. Such as getting hurt because of haste, or getting complaints about sloppy work and having to come back and do it again. Thanks for your openness on this August
August, you seem to be one good egg! I used a borrowed chainsaw once to cut tagged trees and now am hooked on your channel and wished I would a been a lumberjack, sort of. I like that you appreciate trees as well.
I totally agree with your comment about walking up to the base of the tree before you bid it. Diameter matters so much when you get into rigging scenarios. I have even debated putting my harness on and throwing my lanyard around a tree before I bid it.

I appreciate the honesty about the fact that everything doesn't go perfectly every time on every job. It helps us less experienced people in similar kinds of businesses some relief in that we aren't the only ones who make mistakes.
Right on, I'm enjoying your videos, all of them. Until I had a Stroke, I fell tree's too. And climb, but never used rope's. Just a harness and lanyards and climbing equipment w/ 2" gaffs. Only Pine trees and Blue Spruce trees to climb in Santa Fe, NM. I liked all of them. Very cool. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes, to Drum up some business in a neighborhood, I would do a Person's Tree's lightly trimmed or maybe even more, for a smaller price. If they lived right on the Corner where everyone could see the job that was being done. It works very well for advertising your work. And people who wanted there's done were giving me their names and addresses all day long. It really paid off.

I feel I have made every single "Post" overbid retrace statement that you listed. At $1800, must have seen it as a $2000 tree and you could do it more efficient than the next guy, at least that is a mistake I have done and will do again, I'm sure of it. Win some, you lose some! So sorry about the under bid. Sometimes you really don’t know until you actually get into the job what the extent of the job is. You’ll get your blessings in another way. Your client knew they were getting a steal, she probably had gotten other bids and realized she’d better hire you ASAP. Let by gones be by gones and move forward. You sound dispondant, tomorrow is another day. I would never leave my house when tree movers are there. Sounds like a job from hell, but you got through it. Be blessed! Great video as always . It takes a true professional to put out their mistakes . I am not a true tree guy, however, I do some trimming and firewood sales to pay for my chainsaw addiction . What I was glad to see was that even a pro like you can misjudge a tree . After I give a bid I can't believe how in one day the limb is now ten feet higher or how could that 25 ft tree in one week now be 40 ft . I always look forward to your videos and the day you quite making them just know this guy will be wearing a black arm band . Thanks !!!!

Also, I appreciate you explaining your use of ropes and your rigging. Saw the vid where you had to pull a couple of big Fir(?) trees way off from their natural fall line. Great work, I've underestimated loads of tree quotes. They often look more challenging once you get the job and start work, I think it can be human nature to want the job and see it as being easy and underestimate quotes.A builder once said to me; 'Think of a price then double it..!' If only that would get us the work we'd all be fine. Competition puts a stop to that mostly!

Dude. Coolest customers ever! Don't feel bad. Your not the only one. I just got done with a job that I bid at a week and a half. Three weeks later we were done. I also underbid the material by about $2,000. I made about 10 bucks an hour on the job. Better than breaking even I guess. Worst part is I've been doing this for 25 years so I have little to no excuse :-) crap happens. As long as we learn from it it wasn't a loss

Here on east coast that's 4 to 6 all day .course hard to tell on camera..every tree I ever under bid is do to not standing under tree then doing walk threw. Seems hardest ones always end up that way ..can't wait to get new beaver with that better back support have slipped buldged disc

This is the reality of owning a small business. Some (probably most) employees talk bad about the boss when he isn’t around, they think they’re doing the “real work” and he is sipping iced tea at the plantation and cracking a brand new whip. Reality is, there are plenty of days filled with bad news, unfortunate circumstances, consequences of mistakes employees make and more. I’ll stick to poverty-class freelance work, I say “no” and walk away from jobs a fair amount. We love ya buddy, and you’re too damn smart to give a damn what some manchild on TH-cam has to say about what you’re doing wrong
Truthfully, I'm surprised that you underbid the job, but you're human. We usually learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat them, but it could happen again. Sometimes there's legitimate reasons why things go the way they do. I'm sure you're over it and happy that it all worked out in the end with a considerate client. That says a lot about you and the satisfaction felt upon completion.
I wish you'd keep prices secret....now I know how bad my prices really are....I like the work too much I guess...and lord knows everybody has to get some kind of a (deal)...

August, first - thank you for your honesty and that you “own it” . So incredibly refreshing, motivating and inspiring! Also have you attempted to calculate and then allocate cost per hour of operation for chipper, CTX, bucket truck etc. It gets interesting when one finances equipment as well. In our line of work passion drives our motivation often. Calculating true cost of doing business often is overlooked. We can see clearly what people cost but the often hidden cost of personnel training, cost of loosing good folks, wear and tear of machines etc is what erodes the bottom line and makes good tight bidding harder. Anyway thank you again for all you have contributed to all of us in so many ways!

August, it turned out good because of two things. First, you are a good guy, you treat people right, and just like there is bad Karma there is good Karma as well. Good things happen to good people. Second, because God looks after his believers, even covering their rears when they do stupid stuff...like stupid low underbidding.

Awesome video! I've had my fair share of underbidding stuff (from the truck and from a distance) I figured my hourly rate and equipment if we did a tree like that we'd be at 2800-3200 with the stump. Yet in the Kansas City area, there are a few big firms (Hack companies that do shit pruning but still growing like crazy, cartwright tree (Eric Cartwright and his wife Cheryl who both own tow hack companies) Eden tree, and Elite tree) they'd constantly be bidding this tree between $800-$1500 depending on how bad they need the work)
