  • Tank issues on 3 out of the 4 seven year old tanks on a 1986 36 grand banks
We bought this 1986 Grand Banks back in 2020. One of the selling points was that the tanks where replaced in 2019. Since then 3 out of the 4 tanks failed. I have a TH-cam link below with all the details. My course of action may be to remove the 4 100 Gal tanks and replace with 4 75 Gal tanks so I don't have to to move the single 3208. Once I have transferred the fuel what can I do with the empty tanks to make them safe to cut out?

I like to rig return lines so that you can choose which tank it's going to return to. It should always return to the tank that you are using. Never to the other side so put valves in

Hey Tim, sorry to hear about this. A few years ago I had a leaking tank on my 37 silverton. 1985. I ended up replacing the tanks over the winter so had Lasalle pull the motors and stored them next to the boat. I cut the tanks in half to avoid removing more than just the motors These were gas tanks so I was nervous cutting but I flushed them really well and filled with water. I had the tanks built a bit smaller than original so could get them back in. Same company that built them originally, used heavier gauge aluminum and they painted them (originals were not painted). We can discuss when you want and if you need a hand give me a call. Good luck John.

Thanks I will be able to still use the boat while I work on the project. I've been on some trawler groups to get some advice. I still have 2 usable tanks. The one I repaired and the one that has not started to leak yet LOL

It is possible to do a repair in a tank but it's always going to be there waiting to leak. Eventually it will leak very hard to seal up a tank from the inside
