- This year marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy and many aircraft will be assembling very special commemorative flypasts over UK skies, then heading for Normandy. We will see some of the largest formations and collections of aircraft to mark the anniversary.
The D-Day Squadron is the American contingent of Douglas C-47 and DC-3 transports and a division of the Tunison Foundation (a charitable organisation) have set off on their journey to Europe to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasions and 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.
In 2019, have already led an American fleet of 15 historic, restored C-47 World War II military aircraft in Europe commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day and 70th anniversary of Berlin Airlift. They have a collection of wonderful aircraft that are actual D-Day veterans.
The aircraft in this video are:
C-47 “Placid Lassie” ( N74589) - Tunison Foundation - USA
Placid Lassie is the Tunison Foundation's 1943 Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Placid Lassie is a real war hero and is not a replica, or a deep restoration based upon parts from multiple separate airplanes. Her same rivets crossed the English Channel on June 6th, 1944 in service of our country. On the morning of June 6th, 1944, Lassie and the rest of the 74th TCS took off at 0200 hours to invade Normandy. In total, they carried 155 men and equipment for the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in assault gliders. At about 0400, they dropped their gliders. Lassie returned to Normandy at 2100 hours towing another glider. Radio Operator Ed Tunison remembered that the sky was full of aircraft, in contrast to the relative silence of morning. In the days following the D-Day Invasion, Lassie flew resupply missions into France in support of the 101st Airborne.
C-53 “Spirit of Douglas” (N8336C) - Private Owner - New Zealand
Spirit of Douglas was built at Douglas Aircraft’s plant in Santa Monica, California, and accepted by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) on June 29th, 1942. The C-53's primarily role was to drop paratroopers and tow gliders. In December 1942 she was transferred to the 1st Troop Carrier Squadron, 10th Air Force, USAAF and was engaged in the theatre in India. She later went into civilian ownership and in the 50's received luxury interior upgrades. She is now privately owned by a family in New Zealand.
C-47 “That’s All, Brother” ( N47TB) - Commemorative Air Force Centex Wing - USA
On June 6, 1944, That’s All, Brother led the main airborne invasion of Normandy. Piloted by Lt. Col John Donalson, the plane led over 800 C-47s that dropped over 13,000 paratroopers into a battle that changed the course of mankind. Operated by Commemorative Air Force, Centex, Texas
DC-3 "Western Air" Western Airlines Inc - USA

My late father served in the RAF on No 216 Squadron stationed at Heliopolis, Cairo as an engine fitter on Daks and latterly joined the Southern Rhodesian Airforce/Royal Rhodesian Airforce and served there on No 3 Squadron Dakota’s. Grew up with Daks flying every day just about out of Salisbury Airport. What a fantastic aircraft they are !
My dad Lt Col Joseph E Bonafede was the pilot of “ I’ve Got It” dropping paratroopers on D-Day. Just a baby faced boy from Alton Illinois. I have a picture of him and his crew when he landed back in England. His plane was full of holes. He passed away in ‘04.
LEST WE FORGET
This is a nice video of the Dakotas climbing greacfully into the sky and flying past thanks Nikos
Thanks Edward. Looking forward to seeing them again
My Dad R F(Bob)Simpson, 435sq RCAF, crash landed one of these in Burma Jan12 '45 . One engine on fire, and the parachutes attached to the load of petrol and ammunition also on fire. He helped evacuate the wounded crew, 10 minutes later it blew up. He got the DFC.
LEST WE FORGET
As an American, I'm grateful for your dad, he had steel in his spine in a great heart. Good job Canucks, we appreciate you
Was in Normandy and saw soooooo many flyovers....I miss them now
My father served in the Navy in world War II in the Pacific, so I have a deep and abiding love and appreciation for all the world War II veterans, I will never forget what they sacrificed for us. And I will never allow our enemies to make that sacrifice of no effect. Whether they are foreign or domestic.
It's a whole separate world up there and your photography skills did those aircraft proud. What a beautiful tribute to the men who flew them then and now.
Thank you so much
This was like going back in time! A tremendous sight!! The aircrews interacted with everyone too before the take offs. Thank you to the staff & crews at Shuttleworth too for a wonderful day. Thank you Ted, sir. ❤
Thanks Margo
Absolutely perfect departure, just like their arrival ✈️❤️
Ooooh so many Dakotas! All those beautiful Twin Wasp engines roaring... Wish I could put in words how awesome it is to fly in one of these. Wow, what a sight.. Thanks for sharing!
This was incredible to watch and the sounds were wonderful. Can’t wait to see them again.
Having just watched the F35Bs, just no comparison in what they did, to what they do today. I’m off to Shuttleworth at end of July, but miss the air show🫣, but didn’t know it existed until program on spitfire refurb. Thanks as always 🤓
I managed to catch them landing at Shuttleworth on the Saturday, nice to see the weather held on the Sunday too. Fantastic sight to see!
Oii Oii Biggsy
Wow there’s some history flying there, if only those airframes could talk the stories you’d hear 🫡
Oii Oii Captain A. This was simply beautiful to see these all fly together and into formation
Don't they just look magic. Real beauties. ❤. A wonderful collection of historic aircraft taking off from a grass runway is a harp back to how things used to be, Awesome. Normandy celebrations will be magnificent with these 4 icon taking part. Trully memorable 4 ship flypast. Brought to life by great camera work. Appreciate the time you took to capture these aircraft for us. 🫡👍
Lest we forget.
Thanks Dan. I believe there will be more joining them over the next few days. This is going to be a formidable sight
Woah, look at that! Just a small representation of the sights and sounds that would've been seen 80 years ago! Thanks Ted and Nikos - superb as usual!
LEST WE FORGET
A great video ! May last year I had a flight onboard PH-PBA of DDA Classic Airlines, a great experience ! Sadly DDA will end her activities...
One last flight to go ... in August. Still gutted they won't fly anymore
I saw these four at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach VA about two weeks ago. It’s great to see an update on their journey to Normandy.
Wonderful thank-you 🙃
Two words to say for this video Nikos and Ted “ pure magic “
Thank you so much Stuart
We were there on the windy Saturday when they had hoped to do a mass parachute air drop. Which unfortunately had to be cancelled at the last minute.
Morning Nikos & Ted 👊🏼
A great sight & sound, which evokes real emotion...
I have been to Shuttleworth many times - awesome place!
Ted may also enjoy a visit to the Swiss 🇨🇭 gardens.
It could become the interactive,
'Ted Treasure Hunt', finding models of particular aircraft, merch, Aircraft-scaled Victorinox, etc, for viewers and their kids 😉
Thanks for sharing,
ATB Gus 👍🏼
