Been reloading 9mm for several years. At 74, I have plenty to last me for the rest of my lifetime. I have an AR chambered in 9mm and several pistols, so all is good on this end.
I have my self-defense ammo in a variety of calibers. I take unloaded mags to the range, and buy my range ammo there. Small quantities, just enough to remain proficient and correct any bad habits. If I have ammo left over from my time at the range, I just add that to my self-defense supply.
So, living in CA and in a red county(Redding, after moving out of Sacramento), I have learned a lot. Working as a manager at big5. What I call the "30-day gun jail" is when you buy a firearm and on the day of pickup/release. You then are in the 30-day purchase ban until you can buy another one (exactly 30 days and 1 second past the time on your DROS paperwork). A good tip I tell people is; buy a few firearms at the same time, and make sure when buying a lower, they run it as a "Other/accessory." Then you walk out the same day with your part because it is not a "firearm." Ammo now in CALIFORNIA, you must have the "real ID" stamp on your ID/DL. If it says "federal limits apply." You then must show a birth certificate/passport to buy the ammo or firearm. Our ammo has a $1 fee when purchasing ANY ammo, and buying a firearm is a $37.16 fee per firearm. Many out of state customers get PISSED when trying to buy ammo anywhere in CA over this because only CA residents can buy ammo/firearms in the state. It's truly unfortunate what Gavin Newsom has done to the people in my state, but we voted for it, just like to allow pedos to f*** children if over the age of 13, for they can give consent. When society SEVERELY restructures (war on our soil, severe natural disaster, disease, famine etc etc) and manufacturing/import is disrupted, when government control slips/changes, all of it will be worth much more in barter and they'll be easy to sell. I’m 49 years old and have been shooting all my life thanks to my dad. I’ve seen many panic buys over the years but the 2020 panic was by far the worst (or best if u were selling) in my life. Mark my word there will be more. Stock up now that prices are not inflated and you will be in a good spot for the next one. Guns, ammo, and accessories are subject to inflation like any other tangible goods. I could tell stories about the prices we saw and paid at gun shows when my dad took me as a kid. That’s history. Shop smart now and you will be happy in the future.
Prices are inflated now. Everything is basically double what it was 3 years ago. Primers are four times what they were 3 years ago. And you say prices are low?
2008 was kind of nutty. For a while the prices went way up and finally settled. It's not been the same really though. The Bush years were the last of the lower prices.
I've always been a buy it cheap, stack it deep kind of guy. But what I've been doing is buying what I couldn't find in any ammo crunch. And that's specialty ammo. Subs, hunting rounds, OTM bullets, primers and powder specifically.
I know someone in Illinois who had kind of a lot of STANDARD capacity rifle and pistol magazines, but purchased a BUNCH more during the last round of state legislation against the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. Just when it sounded like said legislation was being defeated, legislators pulled an eleventh-hour stunt and pushed it through. That person in Illinois was really glad they'd purchased the magazines. The ammo could be next.

I know what you mean about having a price point for ammo. My EDC ammo is the LeHigh Xtreme Defender made by Underwood. It's increased in price to $28.95 for a box of 20 rounds. When I first discovered it, the ammo was $19.95 a box or $44.95 for 50. Whenever it goes on sale back down to $20, I buy at least 5 boxes.
There's your problem. Your "EDC" ammo should be whatever your gun will cycle reliably and which you readily acquire. Focusing on one brand or spec will prove to be an error.

Its easy to let the hoarding instinct takeover when dealing with guns and ammo etc. But at a certain point its enough to deal with any situation you can reasonably expect to live through.
Depends on the situation. There have been situations, where squads ran out of literally thousands of rounds during sticky situations. It seems like a lot until you see the bottom of the can.
I shoot too much to buy the dips. It’s best for me to buy things like 223 or 9mm by the 1,000 and buy your rarely used carry ammo by the box. Save the brass for barter or reload.
For me, anytime someone (state or federal) brings up a bill to limit magazines (or POTUS talks about it) I purchase 5 magazines for something. Now stocked, lol.
Just have an ample supply of everything gun related. Don't get crazy on one particular thing. If you have a firearm that shoots an unusual caliber, keep plenty of ammo on hand. .380 seems to be a hard caliber to get when there is a rush on ammo.
All these years accumulating firearm parts ammunition and magazines. People ridiculed me while they consumed their money. I have enough for myself and my kids. Now I have people asking if I can spare any ammo or magazines. I cannot. They are not for sale. “I sold it all.”
If you NEED large amounts of ammo, you're doing something wrong. For me, a .22 semi-auto and a few hundred rounds is plenty. I'm not going to survive situations in which I'd need more than that, and have every intention of avoiding ANY lethal conflict situations.
You have every intention. But the people who know you have more than they do don't have intentions of letting you. The people who will inevitably become criminals during a shtf situation don't have intentions of letting you. People who think they're gonna be the Frontline soldier fighting the bad guys are either self deceived or dumb. But people who think they can avoid conflict 100% and don't need to be ready for the worst case scenario are guilty of the same
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. If SHTF those lethal conflict situations will likely come to visit you whether want to avoid them or not. It is better to be of the mindset that I will defend what is mine.
These goofballs think they're gonna be the main character in some apocalyptic storyline but it's never gonna happen. They're stuck in the delusion and too afraid to come out or too proud to admit they got carried away and have a problem
A lot of people talk about stocking up on ammo like “I just picked up another 1k rds” and it sounds excessive but if you’re staying proficient with your firearms, one person can burn through at least 1k rds a year at the range.
Get dies and a decent reloading outfit and primers for each caliber. Get empty shells if available early.. (9mm first and plenty of .22LR cartridges to get started.) .22LR is versatile and shot placement is what matters... remember?
The problem is nobody shoots enough to wear out a single Magpul. And everybody bought 400 of them when the prices went back down. Last time there was a serious band threatened the prices barely went up.

In 2013, Colorado banned mags over 15 rounds. Magpul used to manufacture in CO. They let consumers buy 6 before the law took affect at regular price. They were going for $50 and up at gun shows before ban went into place.
Ya but 10 years later you can still buy 30+ round mags in state for like 13 bucks. If you bought gold and silver in 2013 you'd actually have benefited. I swear, buy silver for barter and return on value right now. Precious metal bull cycle is about to blow everything away and silver is only about 25 an oz currently.

Even if I were a God Tier Operator, I couldn't expect to outlast my magazine stash, with all of them loaded to rated capacity at the start of the battle. That applies to every caliber I shoot. I literally have no reason why I would have to buy more magazines. I probably will buy some more anyway, but I'm well beyond the point of ever possibly NEEDING more than I have already.

When society SEVERELY restructures (war on our soil, severe natural disaster, disease, famine etc etc) and manufacturing/import is disrupted, when government control slips/changes, all of it will be worth much more in barter and they'll be easy to sell. I'm thinking more about full collapse. I don't think this system, run by malevolent narcissists, for malevolent narcissists, is sustainable. Something's going to give, and when it does, there won't be any more supplies. No more food, no more anything.
The trucks, trains and boats will all stop coming, just like the Romans suffered, when Egypt, their "bread basket", was cut off.
A reasonable person? What are you doing in here, sir
You have every intention. But the people who know you have more than they do don't have intentions of letting you.
Buy brass powder and primers.
Get dies and a decent reloading outfit and primers for each caliber. Get empty shells if available early.. (9mm first and plenty of .22LR cartridges to get started.)
.22LR is versatile and shot placement is what matters... remember?
The problem is nobody shoots enough to wear out a single Magpul. And everybody bought 400 of them when the prices went back down. Last time there was a serious band threatened the prices barely went up.
