Emmy, I bought one of those metal wedge gadgets 40 years ago from the Lillian Vernon catalog and I still use it. It is for bread slices. You open the wedge and place a slice of bread between the sides. Close the wedge at the top and run a knife from the top to the bottom. Voila. one slice becomes two thinner slices. It was a handy gadget during the early days of Weight Watchers when you could only have one slice of bread. Ostensibly, it sliced that into two so you could have a sandwich.

To those of you who are worried about the newspaper ink; Since the late 1980s-early 1990s, newspapers have been printed with soy-based ink. Completely nontoxic.
I remember seeing it touted at the bottom of page 1 on every paper I saw. Soy ink is actually edible, and does not leave harmful residues when burned.
The old-school inks were made from heavy metals, and they were, indeed, quite toxic in every way.

Barry over on Sandwiches of History uses a Slice-A-Slice occasionally when the day's sandwich calls for thinly sliced bread. It does what it says on the label, it lets you slice a slice of bread into two super thin slices.

In “Saucepans & the Single Girl “ (Jinx Kragen, Judy Perry) 1965, include a “small newspaper-burning grill” as item to include in your kitchen supplies. And as it is 1965 and this cookbook is slightly tongue in cheek, they suggest that hand the man of the hour the newspaper, grill and meat let him cook outdoors. After all they say, … men tend to be insufferably proud of any food that passes through their hairy hands. Tongue in cheek- oh yes.

The slice a slice looks similar to a camping toaster I once had; could also be used as a stove top toaster. Open it to a wedge triangle; place bread on each side with the bottom opening over the heat source. Turn the bread when the first side exposed to the heat source is toasted to toast other side.
Edit: Nope. I was wrong. I looked it up. One puts a piece of slightly toasted bread between the two plates. Close the plates. With a sharp bread knife, carefully slice the bread in half the long way, making two very thin slices of bread.
I still think it looks similar to a folding camping toaster I once had.

older newspaper inks are known to be toxic and not to be safe due to petroleum-based ink being used with a high amount of volatile organic. Which can cause cancer of some kind. It depends on the manufacturer and where paper is made. If they sill, use this chemical. Nowadays, it depends on where the newspaper is printed and with what kind of ink. Most modern newspapers use soy or water-based vrg ink, which is safe. But the FDA doesn't recommend using any paper for cooking. They say that even though it might not be safe, some chemical that are safe can change into harmful substances that can be cooked into our food. From what I read.

@emmymade, I am not bashing you at all for doing this as I am all about alternate fuel sources that could carry us far into the future, but cooking with news print is just not of them lol. I used to work in a news print facility, and they make you suit up just to handle the ink and such, and having seen all the toxic labeling on the vats of ink that would come as well as the carcinogen warnings when the ink exposed to your skin makes me cringe when I see it burning. Although this was a fun experiment, but I'm thinking there is a reason that this product is no longer on the market.

😱 Wow… THANK GOD you don't hold a newspaper with your bare hands (often for an hour or so at a time, maybe even every single day) when you READ one! People are really silly anymore… 🙄

I grew up with miracle whip. It's the only "mayo" my mom would buy. Ironically, both my boys and I prefer real mayo instead.

I would NEVER put peanuts and miracle whip on a hamburger! Emmy is right----comes down to preference.

I’ve never liked mayo (or Miracle Whip) on burgers; ketchup and mustard are awesome (with lettuce and an onion ring or two)!

How many newspaper sheets did it take total from first loading it to keeping it lit until the burgers were done?

This is a YES for me! My grandmother, mother and myself have always eaten sliced banana with creamy peanut butter and miracle whip. The combination of the sweet peanut butter and the tangy of the miracle whip is so delicious together!

Hamburgers with peanut butter = goober burgers (at least that's what they call them in the midwest). I don't like...hubby loves. My Mom bought whatever was on sale -Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise. I use both.

Newspaper? Our local paper only has printed, anemic copies 2 days a week. The test of the days, you'll want to use their app. They have a web version but it sucks; articles get cropped, pictures meds up the formatting.
