We get asked all the time what are the different sizes? In this video, I will show you and explain each slot car size. I go over the benefits and why some people choose one over the other.
    1/32nd
    1/43rd
    1/64 or HO?
This is a Slot Car Starter Series Episode 1. This is a new series we have planned where we will be teaching everyone how to become an expert slot car racer. Please comment below if you like this series and share with friends we also would love to hear what ideas you have.
Slot Cars and slot car tracks come in many sizes. The 3 most common sizes are 1/64 (Small), 1/43 (Medium), and 1/32 (Large). The size of the track and cars you purchase should depend on how much room you have to set up the track and what aspects you are looking for in the cars and track itself. The most popular track for home use is 1/64.

I've had HO since childhood. City Dweller. They have a nice assortment of antique cars, and new stock, from many manufacturers. One thing must be corrected...Tyco 440x2 can be completely disassembled and made ridiculously fast with specialized parts. Other HO cars can also be improved at the micro-level to run fast. That's an advanced discussion.

Thanks for the video. I had been searching to understand the specific sizing differences and your video showed that really well. About 25 years ago I bought a Life-Like racing Turbo Twister electric slot set for my kids and found it amongst the storage detritus with lots of track and one working car that was missing the guide rail. Looks to be HO scale. Hoping to get some replacement cars and pass it on to my grandkids.

In the late sixties my brother and I put together an AFX track on a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, hinged on one side to fold up against the garage wall. It had all the track we could cram onto it with a banked turn and overpass with screen mesh, paper Mache hills. Pretty cool BUT the cars interfered with the TV. We had no cable or satellite then so we were limited to how much racing we were able to do. Frustrated, he sold it. Fun while it lasted.

And after that your life went down into misery and despair so you tried your hand at drawing Mickelson Mouse 🐁 cartoons but that didn't take off for you.
So after that you thought you'd try to invent a new type of jam so you went to the food store but left your wallet at home.
You got kicked out of the store and tripped on the sidewalk gutter and twisted your ankle.
That led to a chronic drug addiction and a hard life of crime and doing favours for nasty people in low places.

With 1:24 track you can run 1:24, 1:32 & 1:43 cars. As to the fast speeds of HO cars, new AFX sets come with variable power so you can turn it down. It's called a Tri-Power power pack if I recall correctly.

What you said about the speed is what appeals to me with Scalextric; you can limit the speed with the digital system so you can keep it sensible. They used to do roughly 8mph years ago when I was into it properly (I grew out of it sadly); and that was still quite quick really; around 260mph scale. But it's beginning to appeal again; dug out my old stuff over Easter and me and nephew ran a small Figure 8 with some of my best working cars yesterday. Thinking hard about getting back into it but there's other things I could use too.

I think the 1:32 cars on the track look a bit more realistic, more to scale. Just my opinion. I will tell you this, Carerra digital cars are stunning in appearance and they run great on a home track. Just my opinion.

Can the track be fastened down by nail or screws? I'm thinking about giving slot racers as a hobby but one of the first things that is coming to my mind is can a race set be conveniently stored away if it's kept on a bulletin board or plywood. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I've had HO T-Jets and others for 50yrs, and twenty years ago got into 1/32 Scalectric stuff with my son. We love both but the HO just can't be beat for beginners. You need a lot of space for 1/32 to have a good flowing track. A 4'x8' HO track can fit anywhere.

Great video! I had a large, probably 1/32 I suppose slot car about 30 years ago where the body had a logo for "Garvette" or "Garvet" or something similar. My mean older cousin stole it and broke it racing it at a slot car racing business in Odessa Texas. This place was an indoor slot car racing business and it had 4 or 5 elaborate and huge slot car tracks set-up in an office space. Does this type of slot car sound familiar to anyone - the "Garvette" or "Garvet"? I remember the name sounded almost exactly like Corvette but was off by a consonant I believe.
And, are the magnetic F1 type HO slot cars still availablel?
Oh I forgot how much I love slot cars.

Well I had the get away car back in the day.
      It wasn't called corvette either.
      It was an aftermarket corvette.
It was made in the greenwood style.
I used to sit on the green hills and eat my lunch.
      It was a chicken sandwich.
      It was really yummy.
It's a shame they don't make chicken any more.
The name chicken was recycled to mean scared.
It was a shame they did that.
Now they've ruined the name send.
We used to send things in the mail but not any more.

All great scales, but I opted for 1/43. 1/32 scale is too big for the space I have for the purpose of a permanent detailed layout. I will be running a HO layout as a side kick also. I think 1/43 is pretty underrated and has allot of potential to be a hobbyist scale, rather than being just seen as a kids scale. it comes with allot of advantaged over HO scale while still being more space friendly then the 1/32 scale. If i had the space I would opt for 1/32 scale. but I think 1/43 has the best of both worlds.

Two questions I have I bought two of the Carrera go tracks and I think it'll come out to be about 50 ft can I run them all under one power supply and also what it would be a good way to tack down your track to a board would you suggest double-sided tape or some of that sticky mat stuff I have cats and I don't want them messing up the track thank you and God bless

    • @ProTinkerToys
      @ProTinkerToys  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great questions, the power supply should be fine. We use a indoor/outdoor carpet for our tables which caused enough friction that keeps the track still, although we don't have cats. I wonder if that would be enough to prevent them from moving it around?

What is the disadvantage of HO slot cars? The same question applies to N scale model railroads. You can create a huge layout in a relatively small space. Do the larger scales run more smoothly? I know the HO cars can bounce around a lot.

1/32 is going to give you the best options and selection of cars because there are so many companies like scalextric, carrera, scx, and ninco that make them. Plus due to their size and the large brushes they run the smoothest. 1/43 is really the least popular scale but it is great for kids because the cars are simple and less detailed so they can handle more crashes. HO scale will give you a decent selection of cars but most of them do look toony and don't offer the control as the larger scales, plus you have to keep everything on them including the track super clean for them to even run. Also if you buy and HO starter set get either an AFX or an old TYCO set, the new auto world sets are not very good.

Stop saying rubbish 🗑 like good and bad cause that's meaningless.
      What lifestyle are you buying?
Buying scalextric means you end up buying 100 cars for 1 track that's just an okay experience.

can I run 1:24 Carrera slot cars and 1:32 on the same track at the same time??

    • @black99rt
      @black99rt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Carrera track is 1/24, even for the 1/32 sets. You can run 1/32 and 1/24 on it. For 1/24 you generally want the boarder pieces which are included in the 1/24 specific kits. The digital 124 power supply is 18v and the digital 132 is 14v. If you want to run both, get a 124 set, and a spare 132 transformer. This way you'll have the borders and both power supplies. The control units, controllers, lane changers and track accessories are compatible with both voltages on the digital sets.
If you run the d132 cars at 18v they will be really fast. If you run the d124 cars at 14v they will be slow. You could use the control unit to limit the speed of the d132 cars if used at 18v. This isn't strictly recommend but it does work.

We solved the cars flying off the track, by eliminating marshals and magnet traction, and forcing the drivers to go put their cars back on the track themselves after spinning or flying off the track. This more realistically resembled the amount of time lost in normal racing when a car slides off the course, as the driver must take time to get back on, and sometimes go to the pits for damage repair. Yes, the cars can go fast, but that advantage disappears when you have to leave your spot and walk around the track while your opponents continue to lap you.

1/87 scale is considered HO almost exclusively in model railroading.

This is related to how the die cast industry (Matchbox, Hot Wheels) influenced the size standards.

Derived from model railroading, H.O. means Half O scale, O scale being Lionel-sized trains (1/43).
H.O. scale model railroading (1/87) is the most popular size in the US.
H.O. slot cars are actually a little bigger at

I'm a big fan of 1/24. Just like with other miniature hobbies such as RC cars and RC planes, the larger the scale the more realistic they behave. We run Carrera track, which is marketed as 124/132 (but basically it is 1/24). Most of the guys in our slot car club have 1/32 cars so we run those for club race nights. A few of us also have 1/24 and there is a big difference between the two. Both scales are a ton of fun. Of course, actually being 1/24 scale Carrera track takes up more space than 1/32. It's really nice to have the option to run both scales on the same track like that (if you have the space).
