    Apparently the people who worked on Superliminal had relations to people who worked at Valve, and the mechanics that ended up in the game were actually some early ideas for F-Stop. Thought that was really cool when I found it out, as the creativity of the mechanics reminded me a lot of Portal when I first played it

      @Zefnoly
      Developers get lots of benefits from publishing on the epic store, plus they don’t have to pay the $500 that steam devs have to, and also how in the hell is that anti-consumer? The epic store is the same price as steam, free.

    • @chip6933
      @chip6933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Sensur it denies the consumer of buying the game on the platform of their choosing, which would more than likely be steam if not for the epic exclusivity

    • @thesensur6214
      @thesensur6214 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Chipperguy ah, that makes no sense to me, are you going to complain about every single indie game that’s exclusive to steam? Cus’ if not, it’s not the anti-consumerism that’s bothering you, it’s the fact you can’t be bothered to get an epic account or download the store. I’d understand if it were something like a console exclusive thing, but again, you don’t need to buy a whole new console for the game, just download a free piece of software.

    Your focus and commitment to positivity and highlighting things you enjoy about the games you play rather than the typical TH-cam persona of hating things for the sake of views is so refreshing. Your vids, as well as Jacob Gellers have helped me to move away from typical mmo and fps games that I felt stuck in for so long and move toward artistic games and story driven games and I feel like I'm better for it. I have a more open mind about the medium and a newfound appreciation for things that only a year or 2 back I would have found to be boring.

      @Keegan Young yes but you have 2 screens, one for each eye. or for certain googles only 1 screen but each eye is seeing a separate image. So you see in 3D. in a normal PC game you see only in 2D so that's why this illusion isn't possible. In VR you'd notice the object always changing sizes when you move, not just after you move like in normal PC.
      That's why it isn't possible.

    Oh hell yeah, Superliminal was such an experience, the end of it was something else for me, and I'm probably not alone, but I did leave and finished the game with a sense of determination? or more like Motivation, seeing things from a different perspective and looking at different problems on different sides. It made me consider all of that after I played it. Plus it's a mind boggling game, but not too confusing, but we already know that.

    Tbh music has illusions too. Things like metric modulation and the shepherds tone are the most cut and dry examples of this but I'd consider modal mixture, common tone modulations and syllabic overtones illusions and "mind fucks" similar tools that can be utilized for an artistic message as well.

    So far I’ve made a universe in my head from games with physics that warps around forced perspective puzzles. The main two that started it are The Room series by Fireproof games and MAZE, a “book” by Christopher Manson. MAZE actually remains the only non video game in this multiverse headcanoned into my mind, but it still feel like it fits. The Witness is also in it, and The Stanley Parable entered it too, along with Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, And The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist (although I know the latter and the previous are only tangentially related). The idea of reality warping itself around an individual is the whole illusion created by forced perspective puzzles, and so I’ve often found it only made sense for metagames to exist on a similar internal logic, even if not intended by the creators. I only hope that if I can fully flesh out this concept in my head, I can use it to create something of my own some day. Usually I would never post my story ideas online for fear of plagiarism, but the more I dive into games with these themes, the more I find there are near infinite directions a creator can take them. As such, even if someone followed what I entailed here to a T for their own creation, it would be so wildly different from my own that I would have no issue. Video games really are limitless worlds.
    Edit: I just returned to my big board dedicated to exploring these themes, and I’ve found stuff that I included on the board even though they don’t quite apply to the initial idea of forced perspective puzzles warping reality. Still, I’ll list some of them in case they interest any of you. Okay so some film examples are Pony & Boy along with the whole Rupert Grimsby series, The Cat In The Hat movie with Mike Myers, and Little Runmo. Please Don’t Touch Anything is a good game, the VR version is the only one I consider for the list though. For audio, the popularized Cuil Theory recording, as well as Reverse Transmission on Audible. Reverse Transmission is.... unusual. But fun!

    I absolutely loved Superliminal from day 1, when it was just a tech-demo on TH-cam released some 7-8 years ago, when I first watched it (it's scary to think that it was somewhere around when Portal 2 was released, which seems not so far ago...).
    Back then there was a site you could sign up to to get updates on the game progress, believe it or not, I actually did get those e-mails ;)
    Anyway I played through the game twice since it was released and I'm guessing I'll be coming back to it more, because even though the puzzles are quite easy, the soothing atmosphere is really doing it's magic and the visuals still are fascinating, even if you already know what to expect ahead.

    Bro that was a great closing statement. I was just casually listening and that shit got me thinking

      The closing statement was the worst thing about it. What great realisation did you come to? Games can't change the laws of physics, movies can't move mountains, and movies can mess with physics as much as an illusion in a video game (Inception, anyone?). A lazy metaphor does not profoundness make.

      @@scottramsay4053 Of course games can't literally change the laws of physics and movies can't literally move mountains. Like you said, it's a metaphor. But they can challenge our perspective and ideas on what we see or believe. That is what the metaphor means. That type of media, illusions, invokes curiosity and confusion which lead to great ideas that can lead us to thinking differently than before. I disagree that movies can equally depict an illusion just as well as a video game. Movies can only show one perspective of an illusion, that being from a camera lens or the storytelling. With a video game such as Superliminal, the player can interact with the character models surroundings and change them, as shown in the gameplay. Then the player can move the camera around the object and view it from whatever angle he/she wants. Its that which differs the two.

      @@jonathanraulston9488 being able to move something around isn't the same as being able to see things about yourself in more different ways. It's a facile parallel to draw. Reason me out this argument with evidence. What revelations are there to be found through video game mechanics that are inconceivable to ever have been reached through traditional literature?

    I remember seeing this on reddit a while back and I remember back then a lot of people commented on it being really cool and wanting to play it if it ever was made then never heard about it again. Though I see it hasn't released just yet even though on youtube here it says 2019 for date. :S lol

    i wish there were more artists pushing limits like this, not just in gaming, as you said you can do anything but far too many people are content with just doing "normal" things, in fiction science doesnt exist, it can be anything the artist desires but too few people seem to acknowledge this.
    also trippy mind bending vr game when?
    ever since i was a kid i was fascinated that an object in a game could be further away than another object yet also be in front of it, something completely possible in real life, it started when i walked up to a wall in 007 nightfire and saw james bonds arms fully outstretched with his gun3 feet from the screen and in front of the wall despite the wall being inches from his face, i always wanted to see what that would look like in 3d and now its actually possible with vr, this is just one example of crazy things that can be done in games yet never are
