The A Customs are way too bright and splashy. for me. Very early '90's sound. I have always been a K guy and the K Custom Darks take me back to Tony Williams, I got into his sound 35 years ago. K Custom Darks and Constaninoples are the best all-rounders. Thoughts?

@@adamalexanderray I have 17'' and 19'' K Dark Thins and 17'' and 18'' K Custom Darks. I love the complex and dark slightly trashy tones of the Custom Darks. They are way more complex than the original K Customs from the '90's. What happened to those? They were nice! The Dark Thins have that beautiful dark shimmery overtone. I sometimes find them a little too thin, but they work so well with the Dark Customs.

K are definitely more mellow musical to my hear.
A sound not so good to my ear at very low dynamic(the crashes in particular) coz you need a much powerful stroke than the K to made the mass of the cymbals move.
K are more thinner, sensitive and musical at lower dynamics.
A Was made to cut strong through the mix in every situation with their brightness.
Would be good to have both by the way

was just thinking that, then in the wide shot i see they are using ribbon mics for overheads. not the choise id go for for a shootout comparison vid, smooth high end roll off isnt the right mic for this. also there is a lot of room sound mixed in here. i wonder if a close mic for each cymbal would have helped give us a better idea of the sounds.

I started out playing Zildjian Avedis in the 1960's before they were called the A Series.
As I transitioned from loud rock to softer pop and jazz, I went to the dark side and started playing Zildjian K models. I tried other brands and models and these came out on top:
Ride: K Custom Dark and Bosphorus
Crash: K Custom Dark and K Dark Thin
Hi hats: Zildjian K Custom Dark and thin vintage Zildjian Avedis, depending on the size of the venue.
These are just my personal preferences. Not everyone's tastes are the same. Like ice cream flavors, choose what is best for you.

Totally, well they really are like we said. Full disclosure though, I really don't love the hats or rides, even though I've got a 21" 20-year anniversary ride that is pretty okay. The crashes work really well though. They're not overly loud and you can mix them with anything from ultra dark and trashy stuff to loud and bright cymbals and they mix really well. Engineers love em too cuz they make the right noises and are never shrill or overbearing, just purty and musical

@@eastbaymauiboy I've always loved my 14" A custom hat but wasn't really a fan of the rides. However I found a rare Z Mac A custom ride which sounds just like the regular 20" but cleaner and a much more cutting bell. However I do like my A Sweet ride a bit more. The Crashes are def the highlight. And true what you said, I used to mix a 16" K Dark thin with an 18" A custom and worked great! When I play metal though I use the 18" as main and just bought a 19" with it.

Cymbals should be good quality and these all are, that’s no1. Then what is better A or K? Because the drums cover the low end with the bass drum and the snare covers the mid range right?
Then the cymbals should cover the best high end the quality high. A wins for that K isn’t necessary! Don’t need K or dark k we need highs. That’s A’s.

Something’s off with this mix. There is no way K’s sound brighter amd more cutting than A’s. Ks are warmer darker and deeper, they definitely has a place. But, the A’s cut and are brighter and more defined in person; and nothing better than an A thin crash for cutting through everything. A’s cut K’s blend.

Both great cymbal packs. Depends what kind of music for me. I think I have a different K set but My K ride cymbal washes out too easy for me to play hard rock. So the A Custom for that. They rarely show you how easy they wash out in the demo's. They just focus on those super amazing K 15" dark hi hats. That's what sold me anyway. everything else says K dark thin. Both crashes sound good but I like the A customs sound more. It's to bad they broke so easily. If you buy either cymbal pack don't ever let your friends play your drums with them on it. I keep some Wuhans and b8Pro's around for that. They sound okay I guess. there a little more durable and if one gets broken it's not over 200 bucks. I use my expensive cymbals to record and cheaper live or did when I was in a band and played live.

K Custom Dark just doesn't cut it for me (apart from the ride). I used to have a pair 14" hats, but I sold it after 6 months. While it's definitely a good cymbal, it is for players that like their cymbals blend in, rather than cut through.

Hey man, I'm in the exact same situation. I have a pair of K dark 14 hats and just ordered a pair of New Beats so I can sell the darks. Problem is there is no music shop in my city which has any Zildjians so testing live was just impossible for me. What was your experience with darks? Did distorted guitars completely kill their sound? I had only one chance to play them with my band, but I was very dissapointed, it's much quiter than I thought. If I don't play them half-open, even I can't hear them

    • @rkk578
      @rkk578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@andraspeter1114 It is definitely not for amplified music with distorted guitars. Even if you have it miced up, it tends to blend in the music. From Zildjian A New Beat is a good choice, it is a good all-purpose one. It has a more pronounced sound. K/Z also can be a good choice, or A Custom (although I find it a bit too brittle and prefer a Paiste 2002 over it). An alternative solution - if you can find it- is the old Alchemy cymbals. It was an Istanbul Agop "side quest" to create modern cymbals. I don't have the experience with the first generation - when it was only a series within the brand - but I have some which was made under the Alchemy brand name and they are amazing.

The Ks do not cut well in the mix. The K ride is almost lost. The A custom ride is better defined. The drummer is playing a rock pattern so the A customs work better. If he plays a slow jazz tune I´m shure the Ks will sound more musical and better suited.
