  • Country Style, USA is a series of 15-minute radio and film programs produced by the US Army as a recruiting aid from 1957 to 1960 featuring top American country music artists. Each year 13 episodes were produced in Nashville, Tennessee and distributed to local radio and TV stations. Among the hosts were Jody McCrea, Charlie Applewhite and others. Artists featured on the shows included Jim Reeves, Moon Mullican, and Johnny Cash.
The programs were produced by Owen Bradley and his brother Harold. They should not be confused with the 1950 DuMont TV series, Country Style.
John R. "Johnny" Cash (February 26, 1932 -- September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author who was considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country icon, his songs and sound spanned other genres including rock and roll and rockabilly-especially early in his career-and blues, folk, and gospel.
"Stay a Little Longer" is a Western swing dance tune written by Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan. The chorus was used as the opening theme to Country Style U.S.A. throughout it's entire run.
"There You Go" was released as a single released by Sun Records on Nov. 21, 1956. Cash left Sun for Columbia in July, 1958.
16mm film to digital transfer by Gerald Santana

Hard to believe the country was once so simple and innocent. Sam Phillips once observed that Cash’s voice had great “integrity”. I think that word sums him up very well. Integrity. You like him and you believe him.

If Johnny had any number of more skilled more complex players his original Sun sound, which made him a star, would it have emerged in just right form as it did? Yeah, Luther did it just right. I'm assuming this had to have been recorded on film, No way it would be this sharp if it were just standard broadcast equipment. I wonder why they would shoot such a small production show on film though, that would have been extremely unusual for the time. I guess this show just had an incredibly high budget for some reason.
