seeing the character sheet made me recall how it felt to play 2nd edition D&D. It sold you the player a vision of high adventure, but instead delivered an experience of bookkeeping

SAME! Had an older cousin that babysat me when I was little and he bought it at a Toys R Us back in the day and gifted it to me. He'd actually taught me how to play a year previous using some notes he had from when he learned AD&D in the Airforce (TTRPGs used to be super popular in the armed services, as console games weren't as easy to come by back then and it was an entertaining way to pass the time, and if you were in a war, a good way to take your mind off your situation).

Its been a minute since I have seen Realm of Terror. I bought it in the mid 90's for $20, as you could still find them in print. The companion to that set, Forbidden Lore, also included a Tarokka deck. A very cool roleplaying aide to give that extra bit of immersion for Vistani fortune telling. Ravenloft was a great setting, and likely my fave during the 2nd ed. The story telling possibilities they inspire are impressive if you take the time to go down that rabbit hole.
I intended only to comment about that, until you mentioned satanic panic. I recall it quite well, sadly, as it had a significant impact on my life. Not because of D&D, but because I often traveled with my parents friends back and forth to India, in ashrams in Pune and Dharmavaram. I was tattooed on my chest there at 6 years old. When I came back to the states, I was constantly harassed by children and adults alike, that I had the mark of the beast on my chest, and that I was evil for carrying around mala beads.
The first time I ever heard of D&D, was on TV were a pastor was showing the 1st ed cover for the players handbook, and how evil it was showing monsters being sacrificed as thieves were stealing the idols gem eye. Etc. etc. I recall that moment vividly, because I thought the cover was fantastical and after living in india for so long, I enjoyed fantastic illustrations. And also because I grew to despise western religions because of their hypocrisy. This was at 7 years old.
Suffice to say, that when Pat Robertson recently died, I had a sensation of physical relief. He was responsible for so much garbage surrounding oppression of anything remotely non-christian. He empowered people like Jack Chick to illustrate stupid little propaganda pieces aimed at children in the form of comics called "Chick Tracts".
Bringing it back to the topic of Ravenloft and 2nd ed, I was playing at a friends house, whose dad and mom played twice a week since the 70's, and we were always loud because all 8 of us were having so much fun roleplaying. Undoubtedly, we could be heard from the street. And one night after our session ended, we walked out and several pamphlets of 'Dark Dungeons' Chick tracts were taped to the door, in order to save our souls from damnation for the evil spirits we were conjuring twice a week... Too bad satanic panic is gaining momentum again. So many lessons we already learned are being repeated... watch your back. Its even less safe to be counterculture now than it was even during the Reagan administration.
Sorry for the novel. Writers never know when to shut the hell up. I hope that was interesting enough to inform you about what you asked for.

I started playing D&D in the fall of 1976. I was in the 6th grade when my brother came home from a sleep over, and told me about this neat game he had played. I was hooked. My interaction with the "Satanic Panic" is a little involved, so I will keep to the main points. Most were incidents that happened to people I knew. For example, a friend of mine was attacked by a "Jesus Freak," who he took to court, and wouldn't you know, he got a judge who played D&D! An event that happened to me was in 1989, when I was studying with a coven, and we "Encountered," (can't think of a better word,) a police officer. He was surprised when he found out that I was the only member of the coven that played D&D.

My parents really thougt it was a devil worshiping game and I had to sneek to friends houses to play. I did manage to get my step dad into the game and then we didn't have to sneek play anymore, but my mom would give is the angry glare from across the room. lol. I started playing D&D in the late 80s and was definitely aware of the Satanic Panic, but no one I knew ever gave me a hard time about playing. I think the first time I ever saw the basic D&D box was when my aunt was playing with her college friends. I do recall watching the change in RPG art through the 90s - a lot of nudity and occult symbols disappeared from the books as the game grew in popularity. Related example: the MTG card Unholy Strength had a flaming inverted pentagram in the background of the art prior to the 4th edition printing in the mid 90s.
The Ravenloft setting is one of my favorites. If you are looking for an updated take on it for 5E, Curse of Strahd is one of the better adventure books they've published.

Ravenloft was always aesthetically my thing but I've never played/ran it. Those older box sets and materials are always so fascinating to me though! Including the art but also the other gaming materials. Well that was an unexpected bit of 2am nostalgia.. On my 12th birthday, back in 1992, I had $100 of birthday money to spend, and went to the comic shop with my dad.. Walked out with that Black Box starter set, and a copy of the Dark Horse book Aliens: Tribes!
I absolutely *LOVE* the card system to learn that was in this (the cards all in the DM screen). It was based on a really popular way of teaching that was big in schools at the time. One side tells a chose-your-own-adventure kind of story, the other side explains the background/what happened/how to roll/what skills were used, etc.. And at the end of each "chapter", there's a double-size fold-out sheet to run the adventure up to this point, but for other players! I don't think I'd be the ForeverDM™ I am today if it hadn't been for that box!
Ravenloft was great, too! There were a few other box sets that hugely expanded the world.. After having started off DMing the Thunder Rift line of adventures, I went on to a mix of Dragonlance and Ravenloft, before just sticking to Ravenloft! It's great, you can essentially turn *ANY* horror movie into a little pocket-dimension to trap the players in!

Totally owned a pack of those green n white character sheets back in the day (early-mid 90s). Yeah, AD&D 2e was fun. Still had a lot of the weird wargamey holdovers (THAC0, descending AC, etc) but was cleaned up and easier to understand/play than AD&D 1e plus the addition of the "Complete" class and race books gave players more options. 5e really feels like a modernized version of 2e to me.
Regarding the Satanic Panic, it was still alive and well in the late 80's/early 90's when I started playing in middle school in the SE USA (Bible Belt). My parents were convinced it was a "gateway" to the Devil, but mellowed out on it after my friends and I played around their dining table a couple of times and they realized it was just nerds playing make-believe and arguing about rules, lol. That being said, we still had a reputation at school for being the "weird" kids, and in a way we embraced that. The "Hellfire" club from Stranger Things was very relatable.

You burned a PILE of gamer thrift store karma with those lol. I spent many hours with friends going thru adventures from that box set, many treks along the Old Svalich Road.

I like to think I retained some of my thrifting karma by not buying ALL of the vintage dnd stuff, I left plenty for others to discover! That's so fun!!
