mAnu Chopin was sickly and severely underweight his entire life . He was 5 ft 7 in and only weighed 100 lb. He coughed up blood starting in his early twenties. He suffered from chronic sore throats and bronchitis. The last ten years of his life were hell with debilitating tb. There was no time in his life he looked anything as good as Zimmerman.
I bought a record with him when I was in Krakow in 1977. A small shop, I spoke german but when the two women who owned the shop understood that I was Swedish they changed their attitude completely and were very friendly. Such were the feelings against germans still in the 1970s.
Zimerman is probably the best mazurka interpretor since henryk sztompka and artur rubinstein. He shows full understanding of the composition in every mazurka he played and delivers brilliant mix of chopin's thoughts with polish mazurka dance basis but he is also very true with the chopin's notation.
That could very well be true but we need him to record some for posterity. I think we are crying out for that to happen. His DG recording of the Waltzes is incredible and never released on cd.
It is just perfect in interpretation. And that's how a pianist grows up : by playing "easy" pieces without rushing to the famous hard ones. And after the mazurkas, Zimmerman becomes my favourite interpret of the Ballades Well done!
bill Bloggs yea nah he performed/recorded the first and second chopin piano concerto around the same age I’m pretty sure but I do agree with the above aswell
He has an incredible and wondeful Phrasing and this is a very great gift.Just listen to the 2 Chopin's concerts and you will understand perfectly what i mean. This is united to a very sweet ,round, tender sound and touch.K.Zimerman is an incredible perfectionist.I listened to the second Liszt's concert time ago ,in the second time he does absolutely wonderful things, pure magic.
I enjoy hearing mechanically difficult pieces played well also. But, this is a display of masterful control and a beautiful interpretation. He gently tugs at your ears.
What a stunningly handsome young man he was. That said, this is not piano playing. He is making love to the piano. There are no other words to describe it.
It does not indicate the month of the competition in 1975 but he was born in December 1956 according to the Wikipedia chapter- so he is a mere 'not quite 20 years' old at the time of this film recording. He will be 55 in Dec 2011. What a geat talent at such an early age.
Cette mazurka est merveilleusement interprétée. Elle est comme la vie, gaie et triste, lente et rapide, douce et forte. Elle touche l'âme avec un subtil doigter.
Playing music is not about hands doing the work, it has to come from the inner maturity and inner world. So if one works on playing style and relies only on that one misses the point. Playing a piece is telling a story. The notes are written but the story is your input and its unique. :-)
I regret that this is the only competition clip I have of Zimerman but I do have some videos from his younger days(without a beard), will upload more if I have the time.
Totally agree ! They are the best "Chopinists" but they are still very different. For Mazurkas I would listen to Rubinstein for sure, more than anyone else. Holy Rubinstein
Every piece or concert i have with Zimerman ,Pollini and Argerich i prefer with Zimerman without any doubt.Sometimes like for Chopin concert Zimerman is superior of kilometers.
My heart is aching... with this endless harmony... always the right timing... I think it must simply be in Zimerman like this. I'd like to know how his youth was. If he put this on his family or learned it by the family. :o)
I am a 14 year old who plays this same piece...... but, I can't believe how perfect his rubato and playing style is...... while mine is very straight forward and I really cant play good in front of my teacher......1 thing I can say for sure.... his very motivated by Chopin a great Poland, cuz this guy is polish...... plus Chopin added in rubato the Left hand must be very strict in time and the right hand should be very free....., he Zimerman has mastered it......................................!
In my opinion there are 4 human beings since Chopin was actually breathing on this earth that have came the closest to interpreting Chopin...(in no particular order) 1. Martha Argerich 2. Arthur Rubinstein 3. Vladimir Horowitz 4. Krystian Zimerman ♡♡♡♡
Adrienzo, you beat me to that comment. It's difficult not to imagine Chopin himself looking down from the Heavens with a most pleased smile upon his offspring (who has at least the musical inheritance, if not the physical DNA).
@trzymalpy stary... malo kto potrafi zagrac tak dobrze ten mazurek... sztompka przychodzi mi do glowy, ale dawno go nie slyszalem. moim zdaniem krystian gra go swietnie.
I have a question. Was this the piece with which he won the competition? Is this recording the repitition of the winning piece after winning? Or were there several pieces played?
i'm not reading too much into anything and i don't feel its somewhat.... Too many people are obsessed with the virtuosity of fingers and totally miss the point. My mother spent 2 years of aspirantura after graduating as a soloist pianist from concervatoir learning to channel the inner energy and project it through playing and my father spent his entire life doing the same but with an entire orchestra.
What beautiful sound and time- old school, rare....no hurry, no eccentricity- his playing says "come, let me tell you a story, a Polish story"
Well worded...
Музыка нам становится понятной, когда нам её «рассказывают». Да, этот пианист обладает этим умением. ❤
I could listen to Zimmerman play Chopin forever.
are we all going to ignore how similar he looks to Chopin
no
I have always wondered if this hair style was styled liked Chopin for the sake of competition
Not even close
Chopin reincarnated... In every way.

Somewhere in heaven Chopin is proud

I've listened to this performance dozens of times. Perfect emotional expression. Very beautiful.
I cried. Such a beautiful performance. Already at an early age, Zimerman was THE Chopin pianist. And he still is.
It is so wonderfully played that one could believe that it was Chopin himself who was playing. I love this.
Amazing pianist ! And he does look as handsome as chopin too! :-)
Lol yeah same hair, he prob got points for costume and props :P
chopin was so ravaged by tb that i think he must have looked awful most of the time and not like the handsome zimerman at all.

Piękno muzyki Fryderyka Chopina to fenomen graniczący z cudem. Mazurki Fryderyka Chopina to kwintesencja polskości. Brawo Zimerman !

This is a brilliant performance. My word, and he was so young!
Such deep understanding for such a young age
zimerman is a one of a kind pianist,
i think the fact he looks like chopin certainly helped him winning that year
He is very expressive! Excellent interpretation!! Impresses instantly!!!
Chopin is not merely a master of piano composition, but much, much more.
Bravo!! Great pianist!!!

His playing is simply amazing..
I've just got a new favourite Mazurka!

He looks very young here ,i think 18 about and also already full of talent. Thanks for this rare video.
That is fantastic, seeing him perform at the competition! Thank you!
Excellent performance from my favourite pianist!
Even in this early age the best interpreter of Chopin's music. :-) Love him!
O my god is this chopin playing here? Chopin looks quite young in this vid may be 30 so I guess this recording is from 1840???
he must be joking : )
Uli Albrecht Zimerman was 18yo during the competition
