“Life is short, even in it’s longest days.” Profound. I love this interview. All of the aspects, from the motorcycle ride to the smoking to the poignant lines that stick with you. “Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone.” What profound lyrics from a young man. Wonderful.
This olé boy is from just north of Seymour and I have met Mr. Mellencamp twice and I can tell you he is an all American badass!!! He is truly an artist and deserves to be in the music writers hall of fame!!
Minutes to Memories. I've been a fan since John Mellencamp was John Cougar. And I'll be a fan until one of us dies. Thank you John Cougar Mellencamp for every minute... you gave me a lot of memories, all good.
I'd be honored if some fans of the Great Summer of 1982 would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of JACK & DIANE by John Cougar and SOMEBODY'S BABY by Jackson Browne in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no digital enhancements. Thanks and rock on.
What a fantastic man. Also have been listening since he's been Cougar and wish he would have kept name because I love animals and have four cats myself. I don't think he is going to quit smoking, because I smoke myself. I don't want to quit even if it kills me.
God bless you John Mellencamp, I love your music!! You're truly right life goes on. I was diagnosed in 2011 with a kidney disease. My kidneys failed two months ago. I don't want to be done yet, I am fighting and holding on for a transplant. I'm too young, I want to live more and watch my kids grow. I thank you for your inspiring music!! We played a lot of it at parties and get togethers!!
Dave LaBadie hi from Dallas Texas coma I hope you get the transplant and have many years to watch your children, just said a prayer for you. Mellencamp came through Dallas several years ago and signed a piece of black denim for me I framed it on the Scarecrow album. And I'm not even the big fans, just like several of his songs. Did you know he did a demo recording a Paul Revere and the Raiders kicks? You can hear it on TH-cam, you might like it, I hope you do
He's not going to "waste his time being old". That's a great way to live. Don't get older … get better! I lived in Seymour at the same time as him (middle 50's). My Mom and his mom were friends. I have a picture of them together. How he got to be so good at writing songs is something else. Very few rockers can compete with him on that level. Very, very few. "We are the People" is probably my favorite.
All the comments about smoking , he said been smoking since 10 and is 66yrs and had a heart attack 42. Damn it's to late to change so get over it and live your life , because he is world famous and his art is amazing and has a large family of his to boot. How many years will we all have left only the higher power spiritually will know and tap us out. Every year is a blessing when you in your 60's or older lets all be thankful J. Mellencamp was given to us and his music in r own lifetime and when history looks back on these moments will be remembered of this time and all of us were part of it and experience it also , that itself is a blessing.
I have loved you forever. Years ago my husband could not go to your concert because of work obligations. I took my very young son who plugged his ears all the way through the concert. Now that he is older of course he loves your type of music. I still remember you and exactly where we sat at the concert. Maybe we sat to close for him. l love you and your music always John.
I've always liked and respected John Mellencamp. He does things his way and when he speaks, I find him inspirational. His music is always paints a great picture in the mind. Rock on John Mellencamp! Rock on!
First time I saw him live, he did a cover of 30 days in the hole... loved it! Then came the middle years...not so much love, but respect... today... love and respect... thank you John for all you do and believe in. Kindred spirits!
Absolutely love John, love the music and I will never forget shaking your hand after I pumped gas into your limo at the Shell Station in Louisville off Floyd, you put a smile on this now old kids face way back then :)
There you go: "I only have so many summers left and I inted not to waste them being old!" Such an uplifting philosophy of life! As a matter of fact Mellencamp is in such an enviable good shape that it hurts your eyes! GOOD FOR YOU Mr. Mellencamp!
If he happens to come up in a conversation about music, and people say "Are you a fan?".....I immediately say "No, not really..he's alright"....then they say "Well..what about XYZ song?"....I say, "Well, yeah, that's a cool song"...then they'll ask about another...and I'll say, "Oh yeah...that's a good one, too".....after about 6 or 7 songs, I realized "Hmm...I guess I AM a fan" ;-)
Ya know there are so many things I can say about getting old but I will say I think he's got the right idea! I've loved him since he first came on scene and WOW what a journey! Honestly grew up with this man on my stereo, on my MTV, in my car, then yes later in my earbuds lol. Point is he's a legend, helped us all grow up, think about life, think about love and be happy! Who remembers " Paint the mother pink" 😂😂 oh yes them good ole days! We LOVE ya John!! Keep happy and doing ya thing💕💕
i'm so glad i watched this because i had no idea John was such a solid human being. kudos to him for opposing the war in Iraq and not backing down in order to sell more records. he had balls and now with a number of summers left in his life, i'm encouraged to know that he will not waste the time he has left. awesome dude. many thanks.
This honestly was an excellent interview. I wasn’t even planning on watching it but couldn’t help but watch it all the way through. She was totally in love too
I'm listen to John when he was a young man. And now I'm listening to him as old man. He's my generation and I really appreciate him and the music that he does. What you see is what you get. He's just a good old boy.
I was raised on John Mellencamp's music, especially his greatest hits that most people know. As I got into my teens and my 20s, I grew to love even more of his music that I discovered on my own. He is a true music genius, a seriously gifted artist and one of the best songwriters of our time. I hope he chooses to continue to play his music, do his awesome concerts and write his songs until the day that he is gone from this life and has moved on to the next. I hope he has a long time to go!
One of the best living artist we have. And they are all dropping like flies. Their will be a day when we won't have anymore good artist. The days of creating them are gone.
JUST ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS, SONG WRITTERS, AND JAMMING PLAYERS OF ALL TIME. HE STILL LOOKS GREAT AND SOUNDS WONDERFUL. ROCK AWAY JOHN. YOU HAVE BEEN ROCKIN THE WORLD ALL YOUR LIFE FOR US FANS. GOD BLESS JOHN MELLENCAMP. BEAUTIFUL SOUL.
I grew up in the next town east of Seymour. North Vernon, Indiana. I've met tons of people who grew up with him. Seymour had him. To the north, Columbus, Indiana, had Tony Stewart and the founding place and world headquarters of Cummins engine company. A feature film was released about Columbus' world class architecture and design last summer starring Star Trek's John Cho. This little area, in nowhere Indiana, has made a pretty big impact on the world. And I agree with John, I've been all over the country. Lived in seven different states, but Indiana is home. Everything I've ever loved in my life is here.
As a teen in the 80’s, of the few cassettes I was able to buy, I think I had more from his band than any other artist. There’s nothing snooty about John Mellancamp or his music. It has a small town feeling.
He’s so awesome. His choice to smoke, his choice on his politics and where he feels most at home and what he sees as art- it makes him him. He’s very interesting. Idk- he also may have something on the smoking AND drinking theory!
brainsareus it might be selfish but we loose to many greats like Robert Palmer.Eddie Rabbit.Nat King Cole to smoking.I want to enjoy people like these as long as possible.
Lillie Arvizu I agree and then he will say I guess you can get cancer even if you just smoke. I worked with a guy today who needs a Trach. He might be saying those words threw a Trach.
Didn’t the guy have heart surgery? The guys still smoking which hardens the arteries. The guy is a fool. Why would a woman want to be with a guy that smells like a nasty ashtray? He’ll die of another heart attack, COPD, or lung CA. Doesn’t matter to him. I do like his artwork, not his disrespect for God. Using the GD word.
And you're lying too yourself when you think its about nothing more than money! The government gets they're money from the alcohol companies so they don't mine advertising it to your children!! If you don't think alcohol isn't against you more than smoking cigarettes then let me be the one to remind you that I can walk a straight line while smoking a cigarette or cigar!! I guess you're brainwashed enough by the government and the medical field to think that radiation and chemotherapy is a good treatment for cancer! Well those treatments ultimately killed my Mom 30 years after they were administered, not the cancer! So keep being brainwashed
To 499370mlw ---> WTF are you talking about you psycho? How can you even possibly associate all of those accusations of yours with MY comment about cigarettes???
The Verbally Abusive Clown because you're to brainwashed that you think because he smokes its a horrible thing! I guess you're so stupid that you think alcohol and pot would be good for him!!
Real music was about the lyrics and melodies and how powerful and poetic they are, unlike any other form of art...you maybe can't smell or taste it, but you can sure feel it!

I smoked cigarettes for 31 years then suddenly one day without any warning I decided I wasn't gonna smoke anymore and I haven't and that was almost 8 years ago. But the Universe couldn't let that go unrewarded so 2.5 years ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer; A round of chemo every 3 months for 2 years, radiation 5 days per week for 7 consecutive weeks, 47 different prescription medications, 4 procedures, 1 surgery and 15 times admitted into the hospital for 4 to 6 days each.
Grandmothers telling them they're the smartest, most talented and greatest thing ever ALSO creates a kid that as an adult you can't tell anything, exactly the reason he'll most likely succumb to sicknesses from smoking.
whether you die at 40 or 90 in terms of eternity its about .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 difference
I wish you would have asked him what happened in all those marriages. And I shouldn't add on more beatings about the smoking, but I have to. I smoked for 35 years and the first thing that angers me is ALL THE MONEY that I wasted. And my voice, and I'm not even a professional singer. You are still singing and doing concerts. So yes you need to stop smoking so you can preserve that voice for as long as possible.
Cigarretes can harm you, see what happened to George Harrison, no need for that you can't enjoy your days being so sick! John Mellemcamp has a beautiful place why not enjoy it? I know, cigarretes are his babies, well, that his choice and his life I don't want to intrude anyway. Long life to you and healthy too Mr . Mellencamp, you are a legend in my book!
“Life is short, even in it’s longest days.” Profound.

What a great interview - I wish it was longer

Great interview. I don't always agree with his politics, but John is an American treasure!
First time I saw him live, he did a cover of 30 days in the hole... loved it! Then came the middle years...not so much love, but respect... today... love and respect... thank you John for all you do and believe in. Kindred spirits!
I believe in quality over quantity. I would rather live 60 years of a fun enjoyable life than 80 boring years not enjoying anything.
So smoking is fun?
Saw him last summer at Mohegan Sun, incredible show!
Words to Live by..."I Only have So Many Summers Left....and I Don't Intend to Waste Them by Being Old." John Mellencamp
Absolutely love John, love the music and I will never forget shaking your hand after I pumped gas into your limo at the Shell Station in Louisville off Floyd, you put a smile on this now old kids face way back then :)
Not a fan of his politics, but much respect for his artistic contributions to our musical and cultural landscape.
There you go: "I only have so many summers left and I inted not to waste them being old!" Such an uplifting philosophy of life!
As a matter of fact Mellencamp is in such an enviable good shape that it hurts your eyes! GOOD FOR YOU Mr. Mellencamp!
I have only so many summers left, I'm not going to waste them being old... Words to live by.
8:28 Love just how nonchalant he was with that statement.
"I intend not to waste it being old" Love that mindset
John Mellencamp, your music makes me happy.
I have listened to every lyric. Small town Arkansas girl. We got this. Love ya John and all of your music.

He is a brilliant songwriter

To many hung up on here about his smoking, that's all they got from the interview, he smokes. Good grief.
As a teen in the 80’s, of the few cassettes I was able to buy, I think I had more from his band than any other artist. There’s nothing snooty about John Mellancamp or his music. It has a small town feeling.
Love this guy one of my favorite singers
Love you John💙💙💙
Keep on smokin’ y’all. Love from Virginia! Farm Aid 2016 was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Never waist a day. True words to live by.
He’s so awesome. His choice to smoke, his choice on his politics and where he feels most at home and what he sees as art- it makes him him. He’s very interesting. Idk- he also may have something on the smoking AND drinking theory!
I always did love that guy: John Mellon Cougarcamp.
I hope he learns that he should stop smoking
it's his life [and death], none of our biz.
brainsareus it might be selfish but we loose to many greats like Robert Palmer.Eddie Rabbit.Nat King Cole to smoking.I want to enjoy people like these as long as possible.

And he drives a real motorcycle , Triumph
Ron Bernard damn right
Legend
Best real songwriter ever! What you see with him is what you get...so real...
One of my all time favorites. Loved him as a teenager in the 80s
I still have his album, "Nothing Matters And What If It Did". It holds up after all those years!
I love this man! 💜
So the guy smokes..his own damn business. .gezz
John Mellencamp is a every----man!
HELLO!!💯
John Mellencamp I love you. I had such a crush on you. And you still look good.
ALWAYS ASKING THE GOOD LORD TO KEEP YOU WELL!! BEEN A FAN SINCE THE “JOHN COUGAR” DAYS!!
the year i was born Jack and diane was popular on the radio. Or so says my mother and my 35yo baby book!
I have never met a famous person, but if I ever could it would be this guy! We could smoke together! I get it John, I get it. Peace brother~
Life goes on!
He's lying to himself about those cigarettes, but he knows that.
Please don't ever give anyone medical advice. Or grammar advice, for that matter.
To 499370mlw ---> WTF are you talking about you psycho? How can you even possibly associate all of those accusations of yours with MY comment about cigarettes???
J Shepard enjoy your liquor and your pot! It's good for you! Stupid idiot
The Verbally Abusive Clown because you're to brainwashed that you think because he smokes its a horrible thing! I guess you're so stupid that you think alcohol and pot would be good for him!!

Great art pieces, John!
Yep!
I love Jane Pauley
Strikes me as a bunch of shallow nags who obsess over his smoking. Mellencamp is an enormous talent. His gift of music might be a better focus to obsess over.
Well, that's three minutes and eighteen seconds of my life I'll never get back.
John Mellencamp's music has never really been my thing, but I've had nothing but respect for him from (nearly) day one. I remember WPLJ in New York City playing I Need a Lover in 1980 when I was 12 and that long intro blew me away. I'm more interested in his art, he's an amazing painter.
Love you John - stop smoking
I wish people wasn't so judgmental about his smoking who cares. He's smoked since he was 10 he said it's a comfort to him he's almost 70 if he wants to spend the rest of his life smoking so be it. John is a legend - he's made some great songs!
Love the man, just wish he quit smoking. That is what I would say, if I was his real friend.
Intelligent, hardworking, attractive, talented, wealthy......and too stupid to put down the cigarettes.
He doesn't want second hand smoke.
It's called addiction......
Smoking is just one of the more obvious sins one could commit.
We are ALL sinners. Some sins sneak around behind wandering eyes, hide behind one of many masks, some live and grow in devious minds....but no one can see or smell those kind.
Love him. Can't stomach her. Go J. M.!!!
My mother died of lung cancer and never drank a drop. The fact that your voice has changed is not a good sign.
He's 66? May as well keep smoking. Really wouldn't add but a couple of torturous years to his life to quit now .have seen a lot of 80 yr. Olds been since pre teen but don't drink. Smoke em if you got em. He's on the money about the alcohol. With his forc eful passionate personality it's a good decision not to lift the glass. It's just a waste of time.
Everyone yells about the smoking. Get over it. Dude smokes. Judge elsewhere. Move along.
2:48 F*ck, we’re still listening!
This is repeat of last years interview with John Mellencamp. Is everyone on vacation at Sunday Morning?
holiday week
She gets on my Nerves
NICE
Great music. Nice guy. Stupid fool for smoking. In addition to threatening his life, smoking compromises his prime musical asset- his voice.
Hey Jane, the 80s want that hairstyle back.
Only surprise was seeing Jane sit so close to all that second hand smoke. Guess “breath(ing) in a small town” is also an irony.
When he can't breathe anymore he'll wish he had not smoked. It's a horrible way to die.
He's a rock star. How can you tell? He's wearing a scarf! So rock star, money!
Mellencamp, The Stones. Journey, Kim Karnes, Michael Hutchence.😍
My Daddy smoked until three years before he died. He just forgot he smoked until he would go outside where all the smokers hangout.
Grandmothers telling them they're the smartest, most talented and greatest thing ever ALSO creates a kid that as an adult you can't tell anything, exactly the reason he'll most likely succumb to sicknesses from smoking.
Jane's face has been totally changed. Damn.
Mel Mel : Jane is now Plastic Fantastic. It’s scary.
Addiction sucks what’s worse is he can beat it but won’t.
You can hear the garbage in his lungs. Sad.
As soon as the cameras were off, I bet Jane screamed to get that effing smoke out of her face.

"In other news, Lung Cancer died today from complications of stage four John Mellencamp's disease."
