I'm french and when i was 13yo i decided to learn english and work hard in school, just to understand what Madness said in his songs. I love them, i love ska (and the Specials too)
i cant win, i listen to so many of his bands and he wont entertain anything newer than 1989, hes kinda gay for that. (JOKE WARNING: I have don't have a problem with anyone for their qualities, and my dad isn't really gay.)
2023 still listening to this brilliant band...timeless and still better than what is generally released today played their own instruments..sang their own songs..performed just as good live and sounded as great
Musically and lyrically, Madness are, and have long been, hugely underrated. Show me an act of today that can produce this level of craft and I’ll gladly shake your hand.
Jim Tom yeah apparently when anyone had wrote something, they would give it to mike then gather round the piano, if you ever want to single out barso's contributions, check out mrnuttylee7, he's brilliant.
What this song showcases best about the band is what good musicians they were. That piano playing at the beginning is terrific and the way the song briefly breaks into a 'wild west' inspired guitar riff at 3.28 shows just how creative they could be. Madness were a very unique band
@@dddayesq5061 he is indeed - love his playing. I think Eddie Rayner had him beat with skill though - it's wild that two bands operating at the same time had such tallented piano players front and center.
Skill to the maximum, that was the nutty gang, absolutely mad! What a magnificent tune, this is, just love the piano, exceptionally exquisite to listen to this after 40 years!!! They might not have been prolific maestros of incredible musical talent, and the songs may be simple in structure and execution, but that's the innate genius of Madness, it's in the simplicity and the straightforward uncompromising and cleverly composed lyrics. 😊
My brother who passed away suddenly this year absolutely loved madness all his life, I too love them listening to them brings back good happy memories of me and my brother ❤️❤️
This song for me, is the one that epitomises Madness more than any of their others. Great word play, fabulous piano riff, and a fun video. This is very possibly the best song in their catalogue.
I never understood them in the 80s - now, after a good deal of living & intensive study in psychology, I’m completely enthralled by them - this is a smarter band by far than they seemed to me all those years ago. This video is incredibly well thought out & marries well with the comedic despair in the lyrics. It makes total sense to me now. This stuff went over my head as a kid. If I had a time machine first thing I’d do is catch them playing a pub back in their prime.
35 years later and I still chuckle at the copper with clowns feet giving up on the chase scene due to the tyres.madness did some very simple but funny and effective videos.i love the nutty boys.
This my friends is music as it should be, light hearted and doesn't care about what other people think, I will never besmirch the name of madness - the true heroes of music.

Ford Group UK they always looked like they were having a right good laugh in their video's, not taking being famous too seriously, that's a down to earth attitude, that's rare. Cheers
They were unashamed, unpretentious, talented entertainers in an age when it was - and still is - not cool to be anything other than a miserable, self-loathing, Leftist, holier-than-thou 'serious artist.' And on top if that, their music was very sophisticated and skillfully performed. Just not cool. I love it! Fuck 'cool!' 'Cool' is superficial bullshit.
Saw Madness live last night at Doncaster races and they are still a real class act. Had a great time. The crowd was excellent singing along and dancing with the nuttsiest sound around ;-).
I am french and this song is my favorite from this group. For me Madness is one of the best english group in the eighties, with the single as "Our house","The house of fun", "Embarrassment" or still "Driving in my car" Long live Madness...
these boys were awesome, such clever lyrics, loved the sense of fun in their songs and always felt there was depth and meaning there too. Happy times listening to Madness as a kid.
The story about this song is based on a actual event, that happen to one of the members in the band Madness (I will not revel who). When he bought a second hand instrument and then later on dicovered that it was stolen and was confronted by the metropolitan police. This incident caused him much trouble with the law because he was accused not only buying stolen goods, but also with the actual theft. Years later he and the band wrote this song.
Two members of the band (Chris Foreman and Suggs) wrote the song. I wanted to share this story with someone but I can't find it online. Maybe you can help ?
