The way you shoot the X-Pro 3 is, in my opinion, really how Fujifilm intended the X-Pro 3 to be used: on the streets, either with the screen flipped as a waist-level finder or the screen up using only EVF/OVF. There are so many reviews on youtube where people complain about the X-Pro 3's screen and those people don't get the concept.
Brilliant video. Thanks for your advice and tips Dave. I just ordered the X Pro 3 for several reasons. i actually don't want the rear screen access. I want to go back to the days when I found my Mum's film camera and started taking photos. I own Sony and Canon bodies for work but they are........too sterile, too cold, they lack warmth in photography for me. I hardly ever take them away when on holidays as they are my work tools. The X Pro 3 will be my 'ME' camera, for me to take my photos, to go back in time when I was younger. Getting a new SONY A7IV or Canon Mirrorless just doesnt appeal to me. As soon as I noticed the X Pro 3 I knew I had to have it. I decided for the moment to go with 23mm f2 WR lens as I want to be limited in order to increase my creativity. Your video added to the excitement I have, painfully waiting for it arrive in a couple of weeks. PS my poor excuse of a youtube channel isn't really what I do. i am actually a commercial photographer in Australia and my youtube account is just my anonymous play around project, nothing serious. Cheers from the land down under, Australia.
As an introvert who does street photography with a Hasselblad 500cm, i love shooting from the hip because i dont want people to super notice that I'm shooting them because it looks like I'm just fiddling with my camera. I don't have to make eye contact with them and I'm just really shy. I hope someday to be able to talk to people on the street and not be creepy or awkward because rejections affect me so much afterwards and adds up to my anxiety later on. I just purchased an xpro3 yesterday and as someone who loves shooting on film as a hobby, I hope that the analogue experience with the xpro3 will be somewhat similar.
I just purchased an XPRO3 and can’t wait to walk the streets with it. You have done something that I am doing more and more with. I am shooting hybrid. That is photography, short video clips, and sound clips. I am hoping the XPRO3 will be able to handle this. IBIS would have been nice but I see on DPReview there is very little interest in this feature. Whatever. Just bought the 23 and 35 crons and will assess whether they will replace their 1.4 cousins. Happy to watch your video. Well done. Mask on Nurse Marty
From a Fuji photographer to another... I soooooo enjoyed this! And I love Toronto: I would move among its beautiful people if it didn't get so cold! :)
Nice review Dave. With the Fujifilm XPro3 I'm still using the 23mm f2 and the 16mm f1.4 more than the 18mm though. I've read your opinion on the long shots but I still like the 90mm f2 on long alley shots though, sometimes your subjects lose the vibe as you approach them and it's hard to be discrete walking down an alley or in the open in general. One question, do you use the optical at all with the 18mm? It seems like it is only a tad bigger than the field of view in the XPro3 viewfinder.
A lot of people got their backs up over my comments on telephoto lenses. I actually think they're terrific. My point was, people who use only a long telephoto as a crutch because they are fearful of getting close might be missing out. Experienced street shooters who use long telephotos are probably just as capable with a wide prime, so I wasn't talking about them. I almost always use the OVF with my 18/2, except when I get really close to my subject. Then I'll flip to the EVF for more accurate focusing. With the XPro3 I found I lost the frame lines with the 18/2, and even worse it was not seeing 100% of my image. If I had an XPro3 I'd likely start using the EVF more often. Cheers.
Thank you Austin. Dave commented on how the angle of view is different from the X-Pro2. I can't remember exactly if he said it was wider or narrower. It would be good to do some research on that. But he didn't seem to have any issues with it - in respect to using his 18. Though he did say that it took some getting used to over his habits that come from the X-Pro2.
Unfortunately if you prefer the OVF you'll no longer see 100% of your frame and the framelines are now gone. With the XPro2 you'd see the entire frame plus some scene outside of your shot. But of course you can always flip to the EVF and then it's fine.
If new is too much of a commitment I'd recommend looking at a used X-E2 or X-T1 with a Fujinon 18-55MM F/2.8-4 XF R LM OIS lens, a Fujinon 35MM F/2 XF R WR lens or a Fujinon 23MM F/2 XF R WR lens for about $600 USD. Both are outstanding cameras and use the much beloved 16MP X-TRANS II sensor. All the recommended lenses are excellent. If you decided to buy new I'd still recommend the same lenses. The X-T1, 23mm and 35mm lenses are weather resistant. I used the X-T1 and 35MM lens while living in Viet Nam during some really bad rain storms without a problem. While not weather resistant the plus side of the X-E2 is that it's a bit smaller and more discreet than the X-T1 but unlike the X-T1 doesn't come with a flash. In my experience Fujifilm cameras hold up well even after a few years use.
Thanks for the question Neb. TLDR; Yes, but don't be a jerk. This following quote comes from an article in the Toronto Star. "Canadians should know that they have the right to take pictures anywhere in public, as long as they are not breaking any other laws. At no time can anyone be arrested for the simple act of taking a picture." The most important issue here is about respect and common sense. It's not hard to ask someone to take their picture, and they're most often happy to oblige. Also be willing to delete photos if someone requests that you do so. Lovely review! Can you tell me little bit of your experience and thoughts about the new OVF while using the 18mm. It's my favourite lens in the Fuji lineup. Cheers
Thanks. With the XPro2 I see my frame lines and them some with the 18/2 lens. With the XPro3 I no longer see the 18mm frame lines or even 100% of the image. I think for wider lenses one would end up relying on the EVF more. Me, I'm more old school so I prefer the OVF.
I love Fujis...I have 4 bodies and 7 lenses...but no way I'm letting the camera choose my exposure! I shoot manual all the time..I set my ISO, my aperture and all I have to adjust to get the exposure I want is the shutter speed. Easy. As for min shutter speed, 1/400 is too fast, I would set it at 1/125. The camera is always gonna overexpose a shot by about half a stop if not a full stop depending on how you metre. So let your eyeball be the guide. The beauty of mirrorless is that what you see is what you get 98% of the time
If you want a small, discreet camera..and you like the 27ish mm focal length for how it makes have to engage your subject and get in there,..and if what you're holding is not as important as what is in your frame...then why not just use a cell phone? You make a strong argument that the cell phone is pretty much the ideal tool for the job.
It takes time and practice to get comfortable shooting people straight on, as they look at you. Especially if you're shy or introverted. But, as with everything, with enough practice you eventually get over this fear. I did. You can, too. Shooting with a couple of other friends is a good way to start.
If you, like I, like using the OVF notice that the frame lines and focus box do not return to the center neutral position when releasing the shutter button. Oddly, the ACTUAL focus location does go back to the center. This is a major pain in my butt. How about you? Fuji can fix this in a firmware update but after talking to them I get the distinct feeling they won't unless people complain, so, complain! Please.
Anyone else notice that the high refresh rate on the EVF only works if you have the shutter button down? I have BOOST on. That doesn't happen on either my H1 or T2. Did I just get a bad one? If not, KEEP YOUR PRO2.
Vistek | Your Visual Imaging Experts Thanks. Still trying to pin it down. It has something to do with using the CLARITY option. I’m not sure what that is and it seems a new feature. Could be one of those things with multiple causes which can drive one crazy. I’m noticing more heat than expected building under the LCD door and I don’t even do video. I’m not sure but problem appears to increase when that area gets warm. So much for titanium.
Hi JD - it was shot with a combination of XT3 & A73. The X-pro3 isn't really set up to be a workable video camera. It shoots good video like the XT3 but lacks some very key features that make it a reliable video camera. That was very much the intent of the design.
Have to agree. Too many options get in the way. Why analogue style is still popular. Film is not dead. However my smartphone has a clever camera system. My light meters r now redundant. Credit where credit is true.
In your face but stealthy? Don’t be concerned with the tech but constantly be looking down at the flip out lcd? The guy takes some interesting photos but seems to be talking out of both ends at the same time.
John Smalldridge I also think the smaller camera thing can now not be as valid since most people will notice what your doing especially in the uk. Often the more you try to be stealth the less likely you will look it. If you go around with a big dslr with a canon strap around your neck you stand out but also look like a tourist lol, which may also be in your favour. The xpro 3 is excellent and i think the guy makes some good points. I guess it’s what you feel most comfortable doing.

Very nice to see you explaining street photography with xpro3. Matching the colour of with jacket /shirt is a valuable tip. Thanks.
One of the best videos on street photography I’ve seen and also nice to see some love for the 18mm
Thank you so much Peter. Really appreciate the wonderful comment!
Real master is that guy who shoot that video and colorized that. Such a beautiful movie.
Thank you sir! Really appreciate the comment! - D

One of the best videos you guys have produced in a while! love this format!
Thank you Alex! We plan to uphold this format for future videos.
Its incredible how you guys still street photographing while shoot this video.

I share your views. Being shy myself it took me quite some time to overcome my reluctance to shoot strangers on the street. Best of luck.
Great photo philosophy, and thanks for giving some love to the flippy LCD. Thanks for the great tips!
This is video is so beautiful to watch like the quality, editing, and direction is nice and refreshing.
Thank you so much Muhammad! Really appreciate the comment! -D
@50 seconds in I thought the place was Daley plaza in Chicago, great video and shots!

Hi Pankaj & thank you. I shot some scenes with the X-T3 in Eterna, and other scenes with my Sony A7III and then graded in all footage in Resolve.
Bottoms top tips.
Awesome vid makes me want to get a fuji 😝
Thank you Doeunsama! Certainly a comment Fujifilm would be happy to see. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Lovely review! Can you tell me little bit of your experience and thoughts about the new OVF while using the 18mm. It's my favourite lens in the Fuji lineup. Cheers

Small camera and 18/28mm? -> GR3, okay that doesn‘t habe a VF, I give you that.
