Thank you so much! This was my first time doing boning and I had no idea what to do or what to expect. You made it so easy. Thanks for all of the small tips especially - like rounding the ends of the plastic so that they do not poke out at any time. Much obliged.
Oh my goodness, thank you so so so SO much for showing me this! once again i've been saved by your amazing channel! I bought the Rigaline (sp?) Boning from my Local JoAnn's since it was the only kind they had and i wasn't sure how to put the boning into my bodice since it's my first time working with Boning! This channel is a life saver!
Thank you so much. I've been trying to sew a Victorian Ball gown and the bodice required boning but I couldn't understand the instructions at all! This really helped me.
Im happy that you made this video wish it was a year earlier :P but since i am remaking my costume this couldnt have come at a better time. At least now i know what i did wrong with the boning last time so that i can correct it this time around! :) Love your tutorials
This is the best video I've watched on this. I'm new to sewing and wanting to try making a corset. The instructions on my pattern are very confusing and this helped so much! New subbie here
Thank you so much for showing this. Have wanted to use boning to make a corset but have been putting it off because of not knowing how to make the boning work. By the way I just have to say you have the most beautiful hands. Are you a hand model? I wish I had your nails! Thank you again!😃
+B Cran thanks for the kind words! I wish I was a hand model so I could have a valid excuse for getting out of housework, but, alas, I am not. Good luck using boning! You can do it! :)
Clear & consise instructions, we are grateful for the information you share! Would you please share your online resources for purchasing these items? I live in a small town & purchase many things online.
Great video. This is very helpful. I have added this to my channels favorites. All my cosplay and renaissance fair friends will find this video useful! Keep up the good work.
yay! glad you found it useful. If you haven't already, check out our new tutorial on working with horsehair braid. It might be helpful for costume construction :)
Thank you very much. I spent a lot of time searching around bones and their types. I live in Saudi Arabia and we do not have this variety. Is there a site that ships to us that sells mineral and other types?
Thanks for the detailed explanation with regards to the different kinds of boning, Prof. P. I am attempting to make an elliptical hoop skirt and have been wondering if plastic boning would be a good substitute as steel hoop boning is not available in my area. From your experience with the plastic boning, would the hoop skirt hold it's shape when worn with multi-layered petticoats or heavier skirts? Would it make a difference if I doubled the boning pieces in each channel? Your insight would be very helpful. Thanks again for the wonderful video, and I loong forward to your reply.
I haven't made a hoop skirt myself, so I don't know how much weight the plastic boning can take but it holds its shape pretty well. The hoop skirt shown in my example pattern uses the plastic boning because that's the one most available to people at their local fabric store. You can also buy boning online
Did you iron your boning with the casing flat first? Because it's already curved, do u face the bended side up away from the lining that way once I connect my original fabric the boning is curved over the breast area? Lol I hope you understand what I'm saying
in terms of looks, which boning do you prefer? i have found some boning with the casing and i have found the Rigilene boning for similar price. for my project either is fine since ill have a lining anyways but im just wonder maybe for future projects i guess which one do you prefer/easier to sew? thanks!
well, it would be tricky. You'd have to sew your casing or channels outside of the lining so it would easily accessible. Then you can to have a way to open and close each channel because you don't want boning popping out as you're wearing the garment, but it would be a pain in the neck to remove stitches everytime. I guess you can try and get creative by using velcro on one side but channels are usually too narrow to get easy access to do this. Or you can stick with plastic boning as it is washable.
Is there a way to make it hug my body better? the plastic just doesn't mold too well and it doesn't want to work the curve of my bust. I am small chested so I don't know if that makes a difference.
One tip I learned to make it lie more smooth is to always sew in the same direction. So when sewing a casing, start at the top of the bodice and sew towards the bottom of the bodice. Hope that helps
This was a really well-done tutorial! Great camera angles and clear, concise directions. You definitely have a new subscriber!
Bellarii Thanks for subscribing! :)

Your hands though. 😍😍 Really beautiful
Your videos are so helpful. They are clear and easy to follow. Would you consider doing one on sergers? I've never used one but want to.
I would love to do a serger series someday but I currently don't have one.
Thank you for this and all your other very helpful videos.

Can I use the plastic covered boning for a hoopskirt?
Thank you so much for the info. It helped me alot.

How about metal "stays" in the back of a dress for hooks and eyes
Thank you so much. Pls is it possible to use bone for a flared top?
I don't know why not
I'M glad I watched this before I started; how my mind interpreted the instructions from Burda was nothing similar to how boning should be sewed in. 😂
So informational. Thank you

plastic boning is easier to use but I feel the metal boning is a better quality.
Please tell me where I buy this
Thank you! Very helpful.
just what i needed for guidance, thanks
Is it possible to make it to where the boning is removable for cleaning? Also, I wanted to make a dress with a boned bodice, with puffed sleeves.
well, it would be tricky. You'd have to sew your casing or channels outside of the lining so it would easily accessible. gracias!! love it!
Thanks for the instructions!
Perfect! Thank you for this
I like your videos, what pattern is that with the hoop skirt? ☺
It's butterick 5901
I take it with the featherweight that the curved part goes out instead of in so it follows the curve of the bust?
Alison Maschmeier Yes that's correct. the boning should always go along with the curve of the body. Thanks!
Is there a way to make it hug my body better? the plastic just doesn't mold too well and it doesn't want to work the curve of my bust. I am small chested so I don't know if that makes a difference.
Thanks for this info; it's very helpful. And what lovely fingernails! :)
Thank you so much :)
I like your nail colour
Any tips for sewing the casing/boning into the curve? I can't seem to keep it from puckering :(

Professor Pincushion it does. Thank you so much!!!
