    Just getting books, patterns and materials together for my very first corset at the grand age of 60 working on the principle that age is just a number, you are never too old to try something new, and given the state of the world we are in it’s time to stop prevaricating and just jolly well get on with it.!
    Mine is going to be a late Edwardian corset with what looks like fairly straight seams so this is the perfect method for me, I’ll have to watch you a few times - just because I love watching seamstresses do their thing - and also to embed much needed information into my noodle.
    Thanks so much for this, I feel heartened and inspired to get on with it. Have to say I love that green canvass - very Robin Hood’s maid Marian of Sherwood Forest (wrong period -bad for the corset but totally right for you!) 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳(edited)

    I know you probably get lots of "helpful" advice, but when you say that you need to raise both the top edges, and the base of the bust, that tells me that you probably need to lengthen the waist. I'm very short-waisted, and this took me a long time to learn, but now waist-length is always the first thing I look for when fitting things to myself or others, and it's made a tremendous difference!

      I've literally put my "late Victorian" skirt (the one Bernadette Banner links in her video where she makes a Victorian walking skirt) project on hold until I'm at least halfway done with my corset because I really wanna try it on with the corset on as well :). I'd also attempted to make a circle skirt before but lost interest, mostly because I only had a wrong fabric available and didn't like the print on the fabric either.
      Edit: Victorian not Edwardian, I'm bad at telling different fashion period things apart, I'm just in for the wisdom of old tailoring masters and beautiful and informative videos lol.

    This video changed my life. Seriously. For years, YEARS, I always did my corsets using some variation of the third method, with three layers of fabric: outer, duck canvas/coutil/etc in the middle, then lining. I'd stitch the seam allowance down on the middle layer for the boning. So much work to do all that, especially with the many-seamed complicated corset patterns I loved making. My junior collection in fashion school I made FIVE corsets using the slowest methods. All this time I could have been using method 2 to create a quicker sturdy corset with topstitching like I always wanted to figure out how to make. I'm furious no one taught me that before. I'm so happy to learn this method I could cry.

    I get SO WARM all the time, always, no matter the actual temperature, so I'm definitely going to try a single layer corset first. No idea when, since I can't go to a fabric store right now and I don't want to buy fabric sight unseen, but single layer is almost certainly the way for me. The fewer layers I have to wear, the better!!

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The single layer is def lighter, you can even try making a mesh corset for extra breath-ability!

    • @samhainlegge9563
      @samhainlegge9563 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Apparently natural materials breathe better and so don’t get as hot, might be something to consider.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take care to choose a material that breathes; linen or cotton is best for this, as silk doesn’t breathe quite as well and finding wool that is both lightweight enough and strong enough for a corset is likely to be impossible. Of course, wearing a cotton or linen chemise underneath is also essential - no synthetic fibres allowed there either.

      I saw that video of the lady who made a corset specifically for support during horseback riding, and she said it solved all her pain issues that modern bras couldn’t handle. I’m beginning to think that modern society has regressed in terms of functional underwear. I’ve tried spanx (just for the waist fat smoothing control) and it was the most horrible, painful 15 minutes of my life (I ordered a size larger than their sizing recommendation). I’ve also tried a cheap $30 corset, and it was way more comfortable than the spanx, though it was so ill fitting to my proportions that I never wore again after testing it for 45 minutes.

    I've never seen anyone do the double welt method, but it's brilliant! I started on a corset not long ago, but got disheartened by how difficult the construction was. I had been watching the construction methods of some of the most precise and talented corsetieres, but it didn't occur to me that I don't have to be so intense. Haha. Thank you for this video! A wonderful tutorial!

    I've made a corset once, and it was part of my wedding dress. The last version had 3 layers. I think? It might have been 4... The layer touching me was a simple soft white cotton, raw edges enclosed in the corset. Then I had a very strong cotton (raw sides enclosed but facing lining) on which I sewed all the structural parts; bones, waisttapes, etc. Then on the outside I had the pretty stuff (satin & lace), again raw sides enclosed. So basically comfy layer - structural layer - pretty layer. There might have been an extra cotton layer somewhere but I can't remember...

    I've literally been doing research to make a corset for the past week or so. TH-cam algorithm knows me well. Do you have any advice for making a corset with minimal bust, or is it all in the mockup? Is there any material that's more "flowery" or with a design that could be used for the outer layer while coutil remains inside? Thank you so much for this tutorial!

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      If you make/buy a pattern that has too much room in the bust, just pinch it out in your first mockup and add those changes to the pattern for the next mockup. You can totally have a pretty fashion fabric, just flat line it to the sturdy/coutil layer and follow the 'single layer' method from there!

    Thank you for this! I’m working on an 1880s outfit, starting with the underclothes, and next up is the corset. I’m leaning towards the bag method, due to probably needing to add gores at the hips and wanting to add cording under the arms, but it was great getting to see how each method was done and how they differ.

    I recently bought an edwardian style corset off of etsy after having decided i would wear one with my Cinderella gown for graduation and it is my favourite thing. A year ago i would've never in 100 years bought a corset of any kind but thanks to your videos as well as Karolina's and Bernadette's, i know it's not going to decapitate me or break my ribs and it's really doing great things for my back! I wore it all day today (still in the process of seasoning it), even to walk my dogs and do my habitual stream shenanigans! Mum was skeptical at first but she's a believer now hahaha. I love your videos and will definitely start making my own corsets! I'm even considering getting a summer job at a historical site while in college :)

    Thank you for making the task of corsetry look a little more straight forward! In one of your recent videos you talked about how you thought creating had to be done in the original, historical methods and you got overwhelmed so you simplified and did a pattern. I needed that so much, and then to follow up with this and make it seem very straight forward and simple, inspired me! Time to get a pattern and give it a go!
    Question, what do you do if you're bigger in the tummy than the bust or hips (4 babies will do that)?
    Also, where is the best resource for stays and corset patterns?

    • @MorganDonner
      @MorganDonner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add some to the lower front panels if you need to. Definitely try a mock-up first! There are many corset pattern sellers, and so many different time periods, it's hard to recommend just one! I'd say google around, and read reviews to see which might be the best fit for what you are looking for.

    Oh my goodness, you made that look so easy. My favorite method was the last one, the bag, because there is freedom in how the boning is placed (I would try a slight diagonal across the abdomen). I like my OTR corset and the idea of a departure from the heavy steel bones (cheating, yeah yeah) tempts me into wanting to make my own. Zip ties are brilliant, I can raid my husband's stash and experiment. Thank you for the inspiration.
