Fixing up the Abandoned Vintage Tractor and putting it to work

- The rescued David Brown-25 is in rough shape, the exhaust manifold is badly rusted, the oils are full of water and the filters haven't been changed this decade. So I'll do some maintenance / repairs and get it back to work

I just look at these videos and think 70 years later and he can still get new filters for the thing..

@@ColinRichardson it’s weird to think about EVERYTHING we make and what it’ll look like 80 years from now. Kind of scary. I feel that mid 1900s equipment would last 80 years from now but our stuff would fall apart.

This one had it all: maintenance on an elderly work horse; Jeanine behind and before the camera, where she shows a mechanical adroitness by hopping aboard and going for a short round, including a throttle adjust to get the 25 a bit more into the wind, before setting herself deeply in hearts and minds worldwide by stating she "... thinks it's my favourite." At 19:49 we're regaled with Parson Marty T off to tend to the wellbeing of his estate; chain sawing, some hot reversing action and a tow-job. Watch to the end, you'll be delighted you did. Man, I admire you. I wish I could understand how engines work. But I am a nurse and my abilities are different. Where I live I see so many tractors in fields. I wish I could be like you, get in the bush and take one out and make it run. I would remove the bloody snow from my whole street in the winter. Great video, hot wife better tractor. Regards
This is one of the best unintentional tutorial videos I've ever watched. I learned so much..

It amaze me all the time when you can find replacement parts for 70 years old tractor.
Filters and fluids all have their modern equivalents...notice how the newest vehicles are now being manufactured without spin-on filters...back to the replaceable cartridge which makes the chances of finding the exact fit filter for an oldie even higher.
Marty did say that as for finding hard parts e.g. the exhaust manifold...that was going to be difficult.
The carb is an updraft one, and the square bit on the bottom of the exhaust manifold is the "hot spot" that makes the petrol/air mix from the carb vapourise completely...which is especially necessary when the engine is stone cold...otherwise it coughs and farts...it's trying to digest particles of liquid which gives uneven burning in the cylinders and "rough running" and requires lots of choke to continue to run at all.
So the exhaust manifold needs to be the right one.....they don't make them like that any more....and the replacement will also be 63-68 years old...NOS, anyone?

In the first video I swear I couldn't breathe well after he removed the oil drain plug up until he poured in the new oil.

@@USN_Ret- I hope he changed that oil again after running it for a little while. It definitely needed a flushing.
I think folks watch a video and dont really understand how much time you spent getting that tractor to run. Like you just hooked a battery to it and drove it out. Iknow it took considerable wrenching on it get it out of there. It makes for great videos. Your style of working and your attitude are a pleasure to watch. There is a lot more to do to the old girl yet. I believe that tarp really saved the day since it kept water out of the engine. Thanks for sharing Marty Take care

I watched a video of some guy who didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner putting carburetor parts into jam jars with petrol and taped a sander to the lid of it. It did just as good a job as the ultrasonic cleaner.

There's just something about watching someone work on a project, especially something practical and it all coming together that's very therapeutic and calming. Envious of your life.
All across the United States you see abandoned cars, trucks, buses even planes sitting in the weeds. One tractor in New Zealand shouldn't surprise anyone.

I was thinking that also. I remember visiting an Air Force workshop back in the 1970's and they were using them then. Perhaps the Blenheim AF base chucks their old ones into the nearby bush hehe, not far from where you live.
That was a good job on fixing up the good ole tractor, they just don't make things good like that anymore. It's going to be good to see you finish it up. Glad the wife liked the gift you gave her.

Hi Marty, That tractor has only ever been a petrol only model. The TVO version had the classic "double tank" - A small petrol tank of about half a gallon, inside the main TVO tank. Plus, there were other items of equipment in the exhaust manifold that have never been on yours. In some territories the exhaust would have been as yours, with a silencer, on my UK model, it had a 'choked stack pipe' which gave the exhaust a very rich and fruity sound, but importantly, improved the effectiveness of the manifold hot spot' and Priestman vaporiser - which yours doesn't have.
On the hydraulic lift, it will always lift the arms with no load on them, so I'd suggest trying something like a Ransomes TS-59 three furrow plough on there, and get the oil fully warmed up and see how it performs then. A good test of the hydraulic power is to fill a standard 4 ton farm trailer with earth, and see if it can tip that! If it can, it's a good one! The hydraulic pressure on these tractors was only ever quite low, around 400 to 500 psi, if memory serves me, so don't expect too much out of it.
I was looking at those front wheels, and it looks to me as though you have commercial vehicle rims welded to the original DB centres. The original rims would have been 19" and mounted in the same adjustable manner as the rear wheels - The front axle on these is fixed, and the track adjustment is done by repositioning the rims and centres as necessary to obtain the correct track, also one good reason to get rid of those truck tyres.
I'm guessing that yours has been used as a trailer tug in its later life? - They were quite popular in that role over here, on caravan sites and to a lesser extent, as a boat launcher.
Brakes always seemed to be good on these, but they should squeal! There's something not quite right if they don't! A lot of subsequent DB models had a bad habit of leaking oil on the brake drums, and rendering their brakes ineffective.
I have a Cropmaster and a 25 here in NZ. Both were found in much the same condition as Marty's. Both my engines were frozen however, so I had to remove rocker shafts, stake valves and then blow penetrating oil though each cylinder. They are Petrol only models and the Cropmaster has the double tank arrangement still but nothing else TVO related. The 25 has the single tank and is near identical to the machine Marty's wife now has. Your comments are spot on..

Every time I watch Marty's videos, I'm amazed at how similar his area of New Zealand is to where I went to High School on the north coast of California.

That tarp is 100% marine grade. Those are the only tarps that last that long as they're both UV stable and have that anti salt leach substance in them.

@@philmoore71 sometimes kitchen gadgets are the perfect repair tool. Knives and basting syringes ckean up pretty well. Tea towels not so much. Wheres the black shoe polish for the tire cracks?

I think this is a valid point, especially if someone inexperienced is going to be using it. No reason why he could not fabricate a ROPS for it Of course, fresh paint might make a ROPS stick out like a sore thumb against the patina of the rest of the metal....
A valid concern but after 30 years sitting on primordial semi-swamp, I am not sure what frame Marty would find sound enough to weld on; perhaps a couple of "wheelie bars" out the back end.
Came here to say this. ROPS is a must. Maybe a 4 point system off the rear axle and somewhere up front might be appropriate given the suspect nature of the frame?
A ROPS bar saved me when my Chinese Jinma rolled over on a slope. I just hung on to the wheel and climbed out when it stopped on its side. Gave me a hell of a fright. I widened the track to prevent it happening again.

Haha I nearly passed out Due to holding my breath while you were taking out the rusty old bolts off the hydraulic cover. As most know stripping bolts can go from a 1 minute job to being driven clinically insane.
