  • 👉Our old buddies at @litnxt_official sent Zu an RGB30... even though he doesn't live that 1:1 life (Which is why he didn't look at Pico8 stuff.)
    Did Gary and Aish convince him that it was great for 4:3 systems at 8:7? Did he love it for GameBoy and GameBoy Color? Does it really work as a DS machine? Tune in and find out!

    I don’t understand the screen size issue vs the rp2s. It’s the same size for 4:3 games. GBA is sharper because of 3x integer scaling. Rgb30 is truly the jack of all consoles. Even Dreamcast.

    • @pleasuretokill
      @pleasuretokill 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nah. The jack of all handhelds is the Powkiddy x55. 720p IPS 5.5" screen that is big enough to play 4:3 content and look good even with black bars on the side and absolutely stunning for GBA, PSP etc. Imo, too much emphasis is put on "pocketability" I don't care about that. I want a screen I don't have to squint to see. 5.5" is perfect. Also, these small consoles cramp your hands like CRAZY. I feel like a T-Rex with carpal tunnel syndrome using them. Give me a full size HH with a great screen every time plz.

    • @ks1ngh27
      @ks1ngh27 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@pleasuretokill if you don’t want pocketable, then x55 is better. I have the rp2s. I enjoy the rgb30 more for some reason.

      @pleasuretokill 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Pridetoons I mean, its also twice the price of an x55. If you are gonna go that close to $200, the RP4 Pro is a way better option. You can get an x55 for like $85 now

      @@pleasuretokill True, however as far as Objective "Best Options" for Retro Gaming. 5:3 screens will always trump a 16:9 screen. Less black bars and sharper pixels.

    You mentioned a few times it’s good for arcades however you didn’t mention specifically vertical arcades. This is where, in addition to Gameboy and Gameboy Color, this handheld really shines.

  • @xandroid9231
    @xandroid9231 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Yeah all it's good for is 1:1 PAR in Gameboy, Gameboy color, Gameboy advance, nes, snes, playstation, Gamegear, Neogeo Pocket, vertical arcade games, lynx, wonderswan, wonderswan color, pc engine, and pc engine cd. Pretty niche.

    I appreciate the balanced review of this device. There are some others that market the heck out of it, and maybe it suits their personal needs. It is a nice looking device, but I agree it’s very niche based and may not be for everyone. Also I’m surprised to hear about the issues with JelOS as most videos have not mentioned anything. Good to know for folks thinking about buying this handheld.

  • @thomaschipman
    @thomaschipman 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    but you wouldn't get more width with the rp2s. you'd actually get the same amount with 4:3 content. the advantage of the rp2s in that case is that you'd fill the screen with 2x integer scaling, whereas the rgb30 gives you the same width at 2.3x. however, with gba you'd get 3x integer scaling on the rgb30 vs 2.7x on the rp2s. the real charm of the rgb30 is that it can completely replace your typical 3.5in 4:3 device and give you the same or larger usable screen image for nearly every platform without being any/much bigger. with integer overscan, ratios like 8:7, and other platform specific tweaks, it feels like a much larger handheld in a super convenient form factor. i didn't get it at first either, but it has quickly replaced my 3.5in devices and easily the handheld i've played the most since i grabbed it a few months ago.

    I’m really into retro gaming. I have even an Arcade in my living room, a couple of CRTs to play with old consoles, etc… But I have to say that since I got this little thing with ArkOs installed, I barely touch the rest of my shit, is simply amazing. I even love to play Dreamcast on it, even having an original Dreamcast on my garage. I got my black RGB30 for less than 70$ a month ago, and I think it’s amazing what you pay for what you get.

  • @TheRealAlpha2
    @TheRealAlpha2 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    People get too bent out of shape about the unused screen space. You'll buy the RP2S with it's smaller 640x480 screen over a 720p screen just to hide the black bars? GB, GBC, 8/16/32 bit and Arcade are just fine on this. PSP might be a postage stamp and DS is a bit questionable with 2 screens but the screen resolution and scaling options are more useful. The only issues with GBA is the black boarders but the game would be about the same size on the 4:3 screen, you only don't notice the black bars as much because it's not 1:1.
    I haven't had nearly the same issues with JELOS (I've had a little volume inconsistency but nothing THAT bad and no rom deletion... however, one of the new settings lets you have roms on the OS card so maybe there was an Issue for you reading from both cards because maybe it needed to be set to do so after the update from what it shipped with, I don't recall), but maybe the RGB30 is ultimately a YMMV situation for some.

    I really don't get all the hype around this device. The screen is amazing and that is where all the good stops. Mine came with multiple triggers messed up and I had to open it up and fix it. And I've heard an insane amount of reports of really bad quality control from Powkiddy. Once I fixed it they technically worked but never really felt great. Then I set up my emulators with the same shaders etc as I have on way less powerful systems. One of my favorite Genesis games plays fine on literally everything I own even less powerful stuff. But for some reason on this device a lot of games that I can play fine and other things don't play at full speed. Even old systems that should run fine don't all the time.
    Maybe I just got a defective one but eventually got so fed up with it and it wasn't worth the hassle trying to exchange it that I just threw it in the trash and considered it a learning experience and to never buy from that company again.
    If a better company with better quality control takes the same screen and puts it into a device with better hardware and better software I'd be in.

    I'm getting one purely for PICO-8 development, I find 1:1 to be a little magical at times.
    I've mocked up a 5" 1:1 device, obviously, nobody will ever make my dream 5" OLED 1280x1280 screen... but why not max out the comfortable width on any desired device and fill the vertical space with screen as well.

    • @SensibleChuckle

      That's why I purchased mine too. If you're a beginner or intermediate and not on Krystman's tutorials, check them out. I'm behind (life) and still have 2 or 3 episodes left on the first shmup, but from what I've seen on the new advanced tutorial, I can't wait to dive into that! Holy cow! Looking toward to the editors/engines lessons.
      I agree with you on the bigger 1:1. I'd like to build an arcade cabinet for Pico-8 games but I'll have to make a flip up plexiglass cover so the computer OS text isn't hiding behind the art on the glass. That project is way way out into my future. Maybe they'll make one square to rule them all by then?!
