    Just got this watch for Father's day. I can't take my eyes off it. I'm a Rado fan, admittedly, but the execution is hypnotic with that boxed crystal, and the size is absolutely perfect for my 7 inch wrist. From the rotating anchor (effective service gauge) to the concave ceramic bezel and the "one of 1962" on the back, the gorgeously finished hands with the arrowhead seconds, the antiqued lume, the "Captain Cook" vintage look font and the red numeral calendar---this thing just has so much character... Just cannot stop gazing at it. I love thinking of my son inheriting this someday and telling his kids how much his dad loved this watch. Wow.
    Totally smitten. (Thanks, Emily!!)

      David Brown you mentioned that the rotating anchor is ( effective service gauge) what do you mean by that?

    • @I-Libertine
      @I-Libertine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aidanodwyer5397 the rotating anchor, on its backside, is exposed to the same lubrication as the rest of the internals. When that anchor stops rotating freely... you're due a service. (That's not to say you should wait for the anchor to tell you when to get your watch serviced or anything: it's just that it's a great little indicator of when you're due for a service if you haven't yet.)

    • @aidanodwyer5397
      @aidanodwyer5397 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Brown o right, it's a nice watch, you still dig it?, I've got a Hamilton with the same movement so as we is really accurate but it's boring me 😂

    • @I-Libertine
      @I-Libertine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aidanodwyer5397 I absolutely love it. I have about 100 watches (including several standard pieces that you'd find in many serious collections), but the Captain Cook has an ineffable charm that keeps me coming back to it each morning. A keeper to be sure. I must add, however, that part of its charm for me is the size. Rado makes these in larger dimensions and different colorways that don't trip the breakers for me like the brown 37mm of the limited edition does. For my relatively small wrists, this one feels *perfect* to me. But as they say on TV, 'your mileage may vary...'!!

    • @aidanodwyer5397
      @aidanodwyer5397 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Brown the size is what is drawing me to it along with the charm as you said, is yours accurate as what I'm getting from the Hamilton, about 1-2 secs, I have a check now and then but I know it's good, actually I checked it about a week ago and it was only 5 secs fast from the start of the month which is incredible, thanks for the info

    Wow.... Great Rado diver.
    The colour is so classy.

    The oversize watches fashion seems passed, it is a perfect time to have this Rado captain cook on the stage with 37mm, 10 bar, automatic and very very classic look dive style sample, simple love it.

    Love it. And it starts the one of my favorite you were watches out there that looks very purpose-built and then very nicely. I would definitely consider one for myself someday.

    its a lovely looking watch, and a nice size for a lot of people. my issues however are the 100m resistance - for a dive watch? should be at least 200m - possibly 300m - 100m is for swimming, not diving. Also the movement has been modified for a lot of reserve, which is great, but they have lowered the beat rate (to 21,600 beats per hour - 3hz) -quite a lot which can affect the accuracy. I am not really convinced the decisions are suitable for a 'dive watch'. Its designed more like a Pilots watch in this regard but obviously its just too small for a pilots watch.

  • @Claus-L.Mueller
    @Claus-L.Mueller 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I wouldn’t worry to much of the 100m water resistant. When Jacques Cousteau relied on a 100m dive watch as his only dive “computer”, it shouldn’t be an issue for us! 😉

      @SlapShotRegatta22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really? Ha ha, in that case I could not agree more. Good enough for Jacques, good enough for us mere mortals. What watch was this?

    Absolutely great looking classy watch. Tough and perfect daily driver - historical reference itself is gravitational. One of the greatest sailors/exploreres in history. Very expensive piece for the technology cost - limited run is cool but helps value modestly. Very Beautiful dial. Its a keeper - enjoy and thank you.

    Many thanks for reviewing the Captain Cook William. The star of Baselworld 2017 in my eyes. Only the price kept me from owning one. As most Scuba divers don't venture deeper than about 75m or so the WR of 100m doesn't concern me in the least. Perhaps Rado, while preserving integrity of the original, has engineered WR to modern day standards. As I own an oil-filled watch with a tested WR of 12 kilometres, I frankly don't care!

    Great video. I was sold on the watch before I watched your video but you put me on to the deployant clasp. I’ve seen them in different millimeter sizes from 18-22. Which size is the right one for this watch?

    Sapphire crystal, 80 Minutes power reserve, 100 Meters WR, 37 mm Diameter, moving logo, date just, Dressy watch, all types of sports, swimming, snorkling and shallow diving less than fifty meters, 2000 US $ high end watch from Rado.
    Lack of Screw down crown, lack of 200 meters WR and hackable movement are the only drawbacks of this watch.

    Really great looking piece. Congrats!
    Quick question, I know the dial is "brown sunburst but how brown is it? Does it change color in different light? Almost looks black in most pictures.

    • @WatchesAndCars
      @WatchesAndCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      I would say it looks black in most cases, but when light hit the dial you can see that it's brown. Gives it a really warm look which looks great in my opinion. Perfect balance between not to brown and not to dark.

    I really love this watch, I know that many people keep asking for smaller watches, but a bigger guy, I just wish that it was 40mm. So unfortunately this one probably won't make it into my collection.

    Bought this piece too. I agree, crown is too small, very poor design choice. I notice you have a deployant clasp. I only got a pin buckle with my strap. Good review.

    I love the design but it's just too small. I wear a 36mm Day-Date and that works great but the Captain Cook just looks wrong.

    nice but wish all dive watches were released in two versions- with & without the date - it's the most pointless complication on a diver & ruins the look (& credibility) of many watches. Otherwise a pretty watch, tho overpriced IMO. Good review, cheers 👍

      Usually I prefer a no date diver as well, but I think they have done an excellent job with this one. The red really complements the overall look on the dial in my opinion.

    Great review. I love this watch, especially the size and lack of thickness. I'm happy Rado kept to the original dimensions when re-issuing their 1960s diver, unlike Certina with their DS PH200M. I wish microbrand vintage-styled divers could be smaller...for example, Spinnaker. Baltic has a new diver at around 39mm now (not yet available). But do you know of any other more reasonably priced alternatives to this awesome Rado style?

    • @WatchesAndCars
      @WatchesAndCars  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!
      I was really excited about the PH200 when I first saw the pictures, but when I saw the specs, most of that excitement went away. It's still a good looking watch though but it's just to big.
      The only watches I come to think of right now are the Lorier vintage diver at 39mm, Christopher Ward divers at 38mm and the Blancpain Bathyscape 38mm (expensive though).
      I'm sure there are others if you keep searching. Let me know if you find any.
      Regards
      William
