She died on Kyrgyzstan's remote mountains

  • Mehri Jafari was a 43-year old alpinist from Iran. In 2021, she planned to solo Pobeda and Lenin Peak as part of a previously unfinished project.
She was an experienced climber and a member of the London Mountaineering Club.
Jafari originally went alone to Pobeda. She had previously regularly climbed mountains and made solo ascents. She was experienced in that region. In 2008, she climbed the neighbouring Khan Tengri peak (7,010 meters) alone, becoming the first Iranian woman to do so.
But she knew that she was not technically prepared to climb Pobeda alone. Her plan was to join other climbers and go up via the normal fixed route. She joined a team of four from Iran. However, she struggled to keep up with them on the way up.
At 6,300 meters, she slipped and fell down the side of the mountain, and disappeared onto the glacier far below. Subsequent search and rescue mission was failed as she was buried by avalanche.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say how grateful I am that you came with me to search for my friend Mehri. I will never forget the brave effort you made to help me, especially since no one else wanted to come along. Thank you so much and I wish all the best for you two❤❤❤

Another excellent video. 👏 Thank you for sharing this story about an inspirational woman, and for naming & shaming those 3 Iranian climbers. While I completely appreciate that climbers take responsibility for their own safety & tough choices need to be made, _climbing is a privilege - not a battle of attrition._ Those 3 men wouldn't be on Pobeda without the community supporting them, including the locals, people at base camp _and_ fellow climbers... ignoring protocol & turning off your radio to ignore any calls for help is a slap in the face. I _guarantee_ those 3 men would be quick to jump on the radio expecting help if they got stuck high on the mountain, yet they seemed to have few qualms ignoring those same people who would potentially come to their aid. Making a call that it's too dangerous for you to help someone is absolutely fair... switching your radio off to avoid making that call is not. RIP Mehri & Reza 🤍

As a slightly different topic, and completely agree it's tragic her loss of life. What a mountain! The scenery is beyond unreal. Also, how amazing to have so much footage of her, getting her hand taken care of, and footage of the other climbers. Great story beautifully told and put together. Thank you.

Thank you for all of the amazing videos and stories you share!!
Wtat a true hero Mehri was. Those 3 Iranian climbers were anything but brave.
They lacked even simple human decency. But they made the summit, so that is all that matters.
I hope their "glorious" achievement comes back to haunt them. They deserve that and more for their complete anf utter selfishness.

Exercised extremely poor judgment by turning back too late with a predictable outcome. RIP

At first I was disappointed with the Iranian climbers who did not stop their ascent and go look for the fallen Jafari. Then I thought, why didn't the base camp at the bottom, 6,000 km down, insist Jafari STOP(!) and wait for help getting back down. She was in distress and behind 1.5 hr. The EVEREST climbers of experience don't stop on EVEREST either, generally speaking and many dead people are left in view of others years later. There should have been an organization in place to assist before she fell, not after. It is unfortunate that she was in a situation which called for a choice, her or them. They chose self. That is the world, of risk, the professional climbers want to live in and therefore, that is how the world will see them too whenever they are in distress.

Sad, but very interesting video. In a way I think that if you choose to climb alone, you've thereby accepted that you won't be able to rely on the same support as someone who paid to be part of a team. That said, being part of the team didn't help Adineh. I don't believe borrowing the longer rope to try and look for him would've changed anything regarding him, but the team"mates" presumably wouldn't have had neither strength, nor time, to continue to the summit had they tried, which makes their decision sound selfish. On the other hand, rope climbing comes with a risk, and can you you really demand that others risk their lives for someone who's most likely already dead?
Perhaps it's just like how choosing to risk your life looking for someone by foot on a crevasse filled glacier should be a choice. There's no guarantee that someone else going by foot to look for Jafari earlier, definitely would've found her. Maybe they would've, maybe they just would've gotten themselves killed in the avalanche, or falling down a crevasse.

I love that expression "She died doing what she loved". She loved tumbling down a mountain to her death. She was not part of the Iranian team and they had no responsibility to search for her dead body either before or after they had summited. She was totally responsible for her own actions and for her death. RIP.

Sad story very well done. While I believe the Iranian group should have gone and tried to locate the fallen climber they were under no obligation to do so! She may have been of a common nationality which is why I think they should have gone and tried to find her she was not part of the group! It would have been dangerous to try and find Medri and they would be risking their lives to attempt it. RIP Mehri!

Sorry but I think they are under no obligation to abandon their own plans at great personal cost, risk their lives, go search for a dead body in a dangerous area. Mt Everest is covered with unrecovered bodies. It would be different if there was a chance that she would be alive but it seems obvious that is not the case. Also she should have abandoned her climb once she was injured and struggling. Don't make others responsible for your bad choices. If you take the risk to mountain climb, ultimately it's on you.

Neither of the deceased parties would've survived that fall and as dangerous as the ice glaciers were and risk of a avalanche even if they searched for them they likely would meet their own demise. Life's short as it is why tempt fate for notoriety? R.I.P. to those who lost their lives. So sad they had so much life left ahead of them.
