    The Ferrari Roma isn't all new, as it does share a basic architecture with the Portofino, but it's new enough that as a driver, it feels like a totally new product. It's got the twin-turbo V8 mounted up front, but behind the front axle, for proper mid-engined handling. The fact that it's got long-tubes for the exhaust gives it a bass note you don't get with the F8 Trubito - most welcome. And it's got a very comfortable and all-new interior that we kinda love, and kinda hate. Ultimately, it's a very strong contender in the high-end daily driver category occupied by the Bentley Continental and Mercedes-AMG GT ranges.
    Ferrari of North America provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

    personal take, it seems like Ferrari was doing the digital interior for the sake of...making it modern and digital? It's like they're trying to make a statement "yeah we can do high tech interior stuffs as well." Sure it looks cool but if you have watched Harry's Garage review on the infotainment, it's a hot mess. Things were slow to respond and a lot of it seemed super gimmicky. I cant imagine how these will hold up in 3 years.

    • @Drew_Koch
      @Drew_Koch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This is the trend in general. It is horrible. We have EV's to thank for this as that is where we are going and everything is going to be electric controlled through a touch interface. I hate it. Long-term this will depreciate and date any interior.

      They won’t hold up. As we all know these tech gimmicks are installed for the car companies to sell cars to non-car people. There is no support for their own tech, meaning they won’t update it over time. Those companies that do update their tech for you will also charge you a hefty premium. I’d rather an analog everything car with a nice screen. Buttons over digital touch 7 out of 7 days out of the week.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AB-80XThis car easily fits a car seat. In fact due to the wheel position, and unibody structure, the rear seats are directly adjacent to the wheels instead of behind it.
      Means this car is safer than the Lusso in the rear/side. The Lusso has a flatter rear end, whereas the Roma has an angled rear end, that protrudes further from the rear seats/wheels. It's also safer in the front with a smaller engine. Bigger engine doesn't mean SAFER. It's the exact opposite.
      It means you now have more force/mass, that'll push into the driver compartment through the firewall.
      The more you take out of the engine bay, that's not present for safety/crash structure/crumple zones, the safer the car becomes.
      With the Lusso, its V12 being further back, gives it a better chance to not breech the firewall.
      Anyway, there's plenty of crash photos of the Roma, and the rear occupant's would leave the cars completely unscathed. That's an incredibly safe car.
      Where the Lusso is better, simply comes down to cargo space, where you can fit a stroller and other cargo. However, there are small strollers that can fit and fold up like an umbrella instead of a suitcase.

    as a person who designs HMIs for a living. That system is so......l.a.g.g.y. Part of creating good digital experiences is to not have ANY lag at all. A 100% digital touch interfaces are clearly not the best of solutions. There is a time and place for different types of inputs (touch, voice, gesture, button, knob, switches). Each one has its benefits and disadvantages.

      Agreed; that looked painful, even on camera (which is what, something between 24 and 60 FPS?). I almost wondered if it was like a 20Hz refresh rate when I saw him scrolling through at the beginning, but I'm guessing it's CPU/GPU bottlenecked, not refresh-rate-limited. That'd be unacceptable on a $25k car IMO, to say nothing of how bad it looks on a car of this caliber. Worse still, a laggy HMI will age particularly appallingly.

    I actually like the fact that Ferrari chose to force you into engaging the driving experience by the way they put the clamps on automatic mode. My reasoning?? One of the reasons so many folks get into trouble is from the ample opportunity for distraction when you don’t need to pay attention to the cars nuances in the driving experience. ESPECIALLY when you are giving it a bit of a beating or driving aggressively. Getting over confident with the cars command of the environment doesn’t always translate into a smart and intentionally attentive driver. The cars says, “Keep rubbing my shoulders and I’ll let you play. Ignore me and you get no serious performance goodies. You get serious transportation.” It forces the driver to engage with what’s coming into play if the driver in fact wants to play with the road. Know what I mean?? It’s already pretty damn close to an automatic when not needing to use a clutch. I think it’s a smart play since there are a whole lot of folks out there with the money to buy one of these as their first Ferrari or even first supercar and this restriction sorta forces them to engage the performance capabilities instead of just handing them over 600+HP to play with regardless of their shifting abilities. Famous last words before the new supercar owner demolishes his new car coming home from the dealer after picking it up, “Oh, here comes a corner!! This thing is supposed to handle like it’s on rails!! I’ll just hit the gas and the car will do the rest!!” 😎

  • @juliusten6225
    @juliusten6225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay my friend. I took delivery of my new Roma last week and now I have had the chance to really test drive this magnificent car. One thing you said on this video (minute 9 about) that kept me thinking was that in "Automatic" mode, you feel no difference at all in any of the driving modes; Comfort, Sport and Race. Well, may I respectfully share new information with you and please if you get a chance to drive this car again, try it. So it happens that if you are "gentle" with both the Gas and/or the Break pedals, the computer will not engage the "Race" and/or the "Sport" mode settings.
    So I purposely decided to be a little bit more "aggressive" with applying pressure to either the gas or break pedals and the car was amazing!!! It felt completely different. In Automatic/Race mode, the shifts happened at much higher RPMs even when going at 40 mph. It kept it in 2nd gear. Downshifting also occurred as expected in Race and Sport modes. So please, drive it again and you'll see what I am talking about.
    Best regards!!! ;-)

    That's so funny about the auto mode with the shift points. If you put a Porsche car with PDK in Sport Plus, even a 'regular' Carrera or Carrera S, it's practically at the limiter in every gear and downshifting every time you drop below 4,000 RPM. It's nearly unusable on the road. Much more focused.
    Overall this car looks great but I'd be worried about Ferrari and bleeding edge tech...

    Arguably, the only reason to put a Ferrari in AUTOMATIC is to cruise. Let's say you've been out and about driving aggressively (but legally) and you're now on your way home and you're tired. Put it into automatic and relax. If you're cruising don't put it into sport and race modes.
