For those considering purchasing the Rebar, just do it. Hands down the best Leatherman in terms of functionality, size/weight and price point. I’ve had mine for 7 years now and feel naked without it. Great review mate ! Cheers
I’ve had my rebar since like 2013 used it for work for a few years and tons of quick home projects I love this thing it looks brand new still even after heavy duty use
I work as a lab technician and always have a black oxide Rebar in my pocket (as well as a Victorinox Huntsman). I use them all the time for working on GC-MS instruments and other general tasks, since 9 times out of 10 its faster than finding the proper tools. I'm always the subject of some good-natured ribbing for being the "knife guy" (most people in Australia don't carry knifes because it's technically illegal in most situations). Funnily enough, they always end up asking if they can use them...
I have both the Wave Plus and the Rebar. Hardly ever do I find myself in the need of using the Wave Plus, though I love using my Rebar every day. The Rebar definitely beats the Wave Plus all the way - it's better equipped and much more suitable for EDC. Also, the Rebar's 4D Phillips screwdriver is much better and more solid han the Wave's crappy bitholder.. Carrying separate extra parts such as a bit extender and a bit kit makes no sense with a multitool - one might directly carry a dedicated tool. The Rebar's awl is much more useful than the Wave's "scissors". Finally, the Rebar is a little smaller and lighter (yet big enough for comfortable use), and unlike the Wave, it has a solid integrated loop, so I permanently carry it on my keys. The only advantage of the Wave is the ergonomic design that allows accessing the four basic instruments from outside, but that's not a big deal. The price is NOT a quality of the product (the price is not and instrument or a function, and you don't use the price for cutting wood, clipping wires or opening bottles, do you). If you need an electric drill, you don't buy a hammer instead just because it's much cheaper, do you. You buy what you need, not what you can get for a lower price, so it's stupid to use the price as an argument when comparing products. The price is a symptom of the market, not a quality of a product. Therefore, the reason to get the Rebar preferably is not its lower price - the reason is the Rebar's better equipment, quality, and versatility.
Also my fav Leatherman. I have 4 leathermans, but there is something about the rebar, that makes wanna use it and hold it everywhere. Like the little multitool that could. Great vid.
Thank you for making this awesome movie! It really helped me decide on what multitool to choose! I eat canned soup every day and enjoy the occasional beer. Thus, a can and beer opener are essential tools, at least for me.
I want that sheath for my new Surge tool, but, in a horizontal orientation. I “replaced” my Wave with the Surge, as it has all I really need and then some. Now, I’m considering “replacing” a Victorinox multitool I own, with a Leatherman Rebar, and its bit kit accessory. What I do, is buy a new tool, and then sell or give away the old tool.
I’ve been wanting a Leatherman for a while but have waited so long because there are just so many models. But I think this has me sold on the Rebar. I know it’s probably minor for most people, but I like the ruler portions on it. So many times I need to measure something and I don’t trust the iPhone app.
I bought a Sidekick back in June for work and I love it. I was unscrewing the butt plate of a Swedish Mauser and the flathead chipped so I bought a Rebar and I hope the flathead doesn’t break.
My poor Rebar is at Leatherman due to chips in the main blade. My Free K4 is there for the same reason. I also agree that for its size, it performs very well, which you won’t hear any women saying about their men. Oh, Rimshot! Also, since getting the SupertTool 300M, it just made me think of a Rebar 2.0 where it would be little bit thicker and feature internal scissors, and a few other tools it is missing. I know this is unlikely to ever happen, though. The serrated blade, cuts through harsh materials like cardboard like a champ. I love it. Also, there is a bit kit that will fit over the Philips/Cross driver. I have it, but don’t use it much. Honestly, if I need scissors (a commonly needed tool around my house), I use the pair on my Free T4 I generally carry along with the Rebar. If I need a beefier knife (when I have it), I may also carry my Free K4.
The Rebar, Supertool and Bond are the only LMs now which have a proper fully profiled Phillips screwdriver. The 2 and a half D drivers on budget tools like Rev, Wingman etc. are even on the premium priced Free fidget toys, as are the short useless files. As to the bit drivers on the Wave etc, the bits are likewise not fully profiled and I've read bad reviews about how the Phillips and Allen bits perform which is hardly surprising as they are really only half bits; not to mention the fact that they are made from mystery steel. I own a Rebar and a Bond and I'm not looking to buy any more Leathermans, as like many I've started carrying Knipex and a dedicated bit driver as EDC.
I guess weight is they key to your decision to go with the Rebar. The Surge has longer blades with one hand outside access and it has more tools. It is super neat you can even use jigsaw blades. But right, it is a little heavier than the Rebar.
I have both, ive said it before. Apart from the plier head IMHO the Swisstool spirit x outperforms the Rebar in nearly everyway for an extra 20 grams or so. Ergo's are important to me and it just destroys the rebar in this department. As well as corrosion resistance. Have you tried the Spirit?
From my personal experience Victorinox Do not stand behind their Warranty. Victorinox gave me the run-around many times. Leatherman has a more Industrial design and stand by their Warranty every time. In a Serious Survival situation, when you're cold, wet, hungry, dehydrated (in a fight/flight scenario) and limited dexterity in your fingers,i would love to see if you'll be able to get those Tools out from that Spirit or Swisstool. Yes it's on the outside but it is so tightly packed (like a swiss arny knife) and so reliant on those small nail nicks- it will be to your detriment. With the leatherman Classics- Wave,Charge,Surge,Supertool 300 or even the Rebar i could get those tools out with ease. One hand opening blades, even the Rebar blades are easy to get out with Large Nail Nicks. You even get better Blade steels 154cm /S30V options (charge) and 154cm cutters. I prefer to have a tool that i can use when shit hits the fan with tools that are easy to deploy.
As he stated in the video, the victorinox got rickety, loose, all that. Leatherman stomps in the end game, when it comes down to which’ll survive longer and when they do break, and they will, Leatherman will repair it without batting an eye.
#Rebar comes in Tan (Coyote brown) ceracoat handles w/ black tools now. Bit extension & ratchet can fit the Phillips. Wire stripper works even better if you close the can opener down on the wire against the handle. I run mine in tan #clip&carrysheath. Rebar about $78.00 USD on #Amazon.
I lost my Rebar, my favorite Leatherman, which I used quite a fair bit. I just replaced it with the BO version, the one I lost was the SS version. The problem that I have now is, I love my new Rebar, but I'm afraid to use it, as don't want to scratch it
Great review. I've been looking for a new medium duty MT and have zeroed in on this one. Very good to know about it's prospects for longevity. As a bonus you also mentioned the RAE sheath which I was looking at as well, but haven't been able to find many reviews for. Thanks!
What State of Australia do you live in? Because it’s apparently totally illegal to carry this in public in Tasmania now and it was totally illegal to carry this in NSW for much much longer I’ve learned. I carry a small Spyderco to work (manager in a store where boxes and rope is cut so certainly have lawful excuse to carry it) and I want to buy a multi tool but I wonder whether there’s any point because i might not be able to take it anywhere unless I’m working or doing obvious outdoorsy stuff. Personally I think it’s a load of crap. My Dad carried an old pst his whole life. And I suspect there are one hundred assaults with kitchen knives for every assault with a knife or folder. Anyway. Thoughts?
Luke Johnston I’m sorry you have such rediculously strict laws. You should be able to carry knives and even firearms. If someone wants to hurt someone they will find a way whether knives are legal or not.
Right now I have a semi-auto hand gun on my belt, a Microtech HALO 5 in my back pocket, and a Leatherman Surge in my jacket, all legally. And your worried about a multi tool? I feel sorry for you about your stupid laws.
In the UK it would be fine to carry a PST now, because it's a non-locking blade on it and I'm pretty sure it's under 3in/7.62cm. The Rebar wouldn't be legal as an EDC ''without good reason'', but I'm buying one anyway, for camping etc. when I carry fixed blades or my locking blade Vic Soldier (because then I can argue that I have good reason) and for my bug out bag. In the UK we're allowed to carry a non-locking folding knife with a blade under 3in ''without good reason'' i.e. just going about your daily business but even then you can't go inside pubs, clubs, to football matches, or inside schools with any blade whatsoever. Meaning we're limited in terms of EDC multitools to stuff like LM Squirts/Gerber Dimes and a couple more like the Juice series, and in terms of larger tools only 2 which are completely bladeless, the Rebar knifeless, and Gerber MP600 bladeless. I have the MP600 bladeless as a bag carry EDC, otherwise in my pocket I have a Squirt PS4, or a SOG Micro Toolclip. Also I always carry a folding slipjoint knife, either a SAK or Bokerplus. Even then some people don't believe I'm allowed to carry those and look at them like they're machetes sometimes lol.
wow-wow, now I dont usually see or hear about swisstools but you just said something really serious that it got a bit wobbly over a long time. I am surprised actually that they do that. I mean I totally believe you but it is a very interesting statement.
The knifeless Rebar isn't made for going through the airport, but because there in fact other parts of the world besides north america. I know it comes as a chock to many americans.
I've been looking to replace my trusty, albeit wobbly, Wingman with something more sturdy, and the Rebar looks to be perfect. I would be severely missing two things from the tradeoff, though: the package opener (sometimes called the clamshell buster, and for a damn good reason. This thing carves through plastic like butter) and the pocket clip. For the latter, though, I'm really damn glad I clicked on this video, because that metal sheath look perfect for use as an inner-pocket holster. It'll probably add on some thickness, but hey, it's probably worth a try.
Fwiw the knifeless version isn't as comfortable as the regular version. The knives are shaped to fill in the cut-outs in the handles. Without them the smooth line of the handles is lost. One blade is replaced with scissors (OK), the other by a spacer (not OK). The locking saw blade is retained. So, it's not really knife-less. All told, a bit of a lash-up by Leatherman, sold at a premium. Not recommended. Juice S2 or CF4 are better, Euro-legislation friendly, urban carry options. The standard Rebar is a gem, obviously.
A retailer sent me a Wave instead of a (second) Rebar a couple of weeks ago by mistake. Personal honesty aside, I compared the Wave with a Rebar, decided I really didn't like the relative clunkiness of the Wave, the crappy bits, the comically small scissors, or the inferior wire cutters and sent it straight back. For EDC, camping and such, rather than a job-related tool, the Rebar is more appropriate impo.
ComUnSas I was skeptical, but bought a knifeless version anyway which is still waiting in the U.S. to be shipped here. You obviously can't get on a plane with a saw, but I thought with the scissors it might be a better tool.
adhair The Gerber bladeless MP600 has a removable saw blade but a lot of folk online have said the replaceable cutter bits shatter. Plus I'm a bit meh about Gerber. So I gave that a miss even though it is truly bladeless. Don't get me wrong, the knifeless Rebar still has a lot of Rebar goodness and like many I carry a separate pocket knife appropriate to the environment anyway. So why not some scissors instead. However, the handle is noticeably less comfortable in my hands and I wouldn't want to use it for extended periods.
...one more thing, because there are no blades, Leatherman moved the file up against one of the handle cut-outs to at least partially fill the gap. Which means that the file grates on your hand slightly and, because it seems to be high carbon steel, it goes rusty where it touches any perspiration on the base of your thumb or the inside of your fingers. This really is a crude hack of a standard Rebar with no heart put into it whatsoever, probably thought up at about 4.30pm one Friday afternoon.
Not true what other people say that you can get to everything quicker with the wave! The only tool that can beat that or any Leatherman is the Swisstool
I bought the Surge and was too large for my taste so I returned it and got the Signal, I did not like the plastic parts on it so it went back. I got the rebar and its been 4 months and its on my belt every work day. My favorite leatherman.
I'm gonna film a Wave vs Rebar comparison video tonight. There's a lot I have to say about them. I was extremely excited about the knifeless Rebar, but I think Leatherman dropped the ball on it. One knife is replaced with scissors, but the other is replaced with my sex life, also known as NOTHING. They also kept the saw on it so it's not travel friendly like the MP600 Bladeless. Leatherman is going down hill fast which is another video i'm gonna sadly have to make soon.
I can't speak about other leathermans (don't have any others), but its definitely my favorite multitool that I own. I owe the purchase in part to you lol I saw your video a long while back and saw it at the store some time after that and decided to get it.
I'm writing this 4 days before 2021. That's about 25 years after the Wave was released. There are a number of reasons why it's the most popular pliers-based multitool of all time. I'm pretty confident that a lot of us would agree that if we can't get to a knife one-handed, we're not interested.
I love my Leatherman Rebar, and the only gripe I have is the lack of scissors. I use them, and a straight edge, very often. I used my Rebar to pickup cactus yesterday to replant them.
CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Yep, I think you've hit just the right vibe for your general vids (the exception being when shit gets a bit zany, as it does on occasion around here!)
Yep that's pretty obvious to me too, anyone who knows a bit about the world would choose Swiss made over US made, nobody in their right mind would argue that Dodge or Ford are better than VW or Audi for example, and Swiss is a cut above German quality. However I do sometimes carry a Squirt as really there isn't such a small Vic with that toolset, if there was - like a minichamp with pliers - I'd buy it like a shot. Likewise I am getting a Rebar for my bug out bag as I found one for just £50 new. I always carry a Vic though as well as any multitool, often I carry 2, like Farmer and Classic, no real overlap in toolset. I would get a Swisstool however I think they all have locking blades so I wouldn't be allowed to EDC. Might get one all the same lol. What's amazing is that even a pretty comprehensive Swisstool like Spirit X plus with ratchet set and so on is still cheaper than quite a few Leathermans like Charge TTI, Signal and so on. God alone knows why. But I wish Vic would make a Swisstool with either a non-locking blade or bladeless for the UK and other markets where knife laws are restrictive.
Rebar is really shit, I purchased and I was happy when one fine day when I was fencing and cutting wires ,probably 10 th cutting my pliers broken into 2 pieces, they just say it’s heavy duty and all that shit . But practically never works
You’re so right about some people liking all these extra things on multi-tools just to know that they are there. Excellent video.
For those considering purchasing the Rebar, just do it. Hands down the best Leatherman in terms of functionality, size/weight and price point. I’ve had mine for 7 years now and feel naked without it. Great review mate ! Cheers
Just missing scissors

Picked up one in coyote and black today at LL Bean. It’s amazing and will last decades

Amén that's all
how do you carry a multitool on a keyring :0
@@krkrbbr Normally. The Rebar has a loop. The whole set is a bit bigger and heavier, but still easy to carry. I'm a big man 🙂
Also my fav Leatherman. I have 4 leathermans, but there is something about the rebar, that makes wanna use it and hold it everywhere. Like the little multitool that could. Great vid.
Around 2012 I bought a Wingman and Micro pack at Home Depot for $19.99. They had 4-5 and I got em all for presents!!! Best deal ever!
Thanks for the review - confirms my choice.
I keep it in my motorbike’s toolbox all the time, nice build and finish. good review
Have a rebar and surge. Awesome combo!
that inside blade prevents it from closing on your fingers, think about and let me know
Mark R. Doesn’t it have a blade lock already?
@@TinyIslandMaine yes it does
@@TinyIslandMaine i mean if for some reason the lock fails, which i doubt, at least theres a 2nd safety unlike the liner lock ones
My fav multitool too. Now I got two - one at home and one at work.
Thank you for making this awesome movie! It really helped me decide on what multitool to choose! I eat canned soup every day and enjoy the occasional beer. Thus, a can and beer opener are essential tools, at least for me.
Every multitool in this world is made for you. For that need.

If a Leatherman does get damaged, the warranty fixes that.
My Rebar hangs on a hook under the kitchen counter as the house emergency tool. Nuff said.
Reminds me of my first leatherman which I still have in the tool kit, the blast, very sleek tool, like it a lot

This really is a crude hack of a standard Rebar with no heart put into it whatsoever, probably thought up at about 4.30pm one Friday afternoon.
blades are thin and cheap / will bend / if weight is not a factor step up to the wave or super 300 / also is a pincher when folding so watch out
U can say that again blade thin!!!
I don't think multitool blades are meant for heavy cutting tasks. If you need a thick 3.75 inch blade, carry a full size, blade only pocket knife.
Not true what other people say that you can get to everything quicker with the wave! The only tool that can beat that or any Leatherman is the Swisstool
Can someone help me out please how do I close the tool I am so confused the pliers are constantly out
Are u joking or are u actually serious.
Just close it you might need a little bit of power
You have to be kidding me. If you can’t close it should you even own one?
Side kick is my fav.
Check out the sideclip.
For me it's the surge
I've come to the conclusion that the Rebar and the Surge are the best two. I'm just trying to find out which is the better for outdoors and urban use.
Average lad the Surge is better for sure unless weight is a major concern.
Have you ever experienced any rust on the tools of your rebar?
These are only $59 on Amazon. Did the price go down or am I looking at the wrong one?
It seems the price did lower recently. For an extra five dollars I just ordered the Rebar in Coyote color for $64 on Amazon.
I think this guys Australian so he's probably referring to AUD not USD
Careful it's not the knifeless model
Should I buy the Leatherman rebar if I just bought the Leatherman supertool 300M?
нет не стоит
Cool
I bought the Surge and was too large for my taste so I returned it and got the Signal, I did not like the plastic parts on it so it went back. I got the rebar and its been 4 months and its on my belt every work day. My favorite leatherman.
A lot of people carry the smaller Leatherman for awhile and then get the Surge after getting use to carrying something on a daily basis.
That is not how you use your wire stripper
That’s EXACTLY how he uses it. I saw it with my 👁 👁 Perhaps you don’t use it the same way 🤔 Get a channel and show the 🌎
@Superman Like your head???
Closing the notch over the wire then twist and pull gets the job done. I like the hard wire cutters to strip wires better.
I owe the purchase in part to you lol I saw your video a long while back and saw it at the store some time after that and decided to get it.
pull that knife:you have summer teeth sunshine
Lost my Rebar today which I’ve been using daily for years. Trying to find a reason not to buy a new one straight away. Oh well, I’ll get one tomorrow.
The LM-Charge for example is a much more userfriendly and frankly "better" multitool.
So WHY on ffs the Rebar ?!?
Rebar got more points on smoothness, compactness, carry-ability, lightness, classic-look, price, philips head, etc.
If you have a second knife, I'd look into the rebar - don't care about the diamond file, and the flat stubby screwdrivers are annoying
one word, chunky.
I'm writing this 4 days before 2021. That's about 25 years after the Wave was released. There are a number of reasons why it's the most popular pliers-based multitool of all time. I'm pretty confident that a lot of us would agree that if we can't get to a knife one-handed, we're not interested.
Good point but in the UK i wish :(
i like my rebar but after two years and using plenty of wd40 it is still tight asf
I love my Leatherman Rebar, and the only gripe I have is the lack of scissors. I use them, and a straight edge, very often. I used my Rebar to pickup cactus yesterday to replant them.
You can give up both blades for scissors on the knifeless version
Hey, nice intro
Kit Bloke cheers! I was finding the other a bit clangy and jarring after a while
CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Yep, I think you've hit just the right vibe for your general vids (the exception being when shit gets a bit zany, as it does on occasion around here!)
blade will also rust
High carbon steel is prone to rust, some maintenance is needed.
leatherman is inferior to victorinox / after extensive comparisons i now carry all victorinox knives and tools
Gtfoh
U talk too fast. Hard to understand
