Coming from a tube amp and fx pedals I don't find the Pod Go limiting at all. It's actually more flexible than a "traditional" setup in some ways. And let's be honest, it's an easy trap to fall into fiddling with knobs more than you're actually practicing, so having limits isn't necessarily a bad thing. That said, I can mimic my "traditional" rig with 3 patches or less, and with a lot less of the tap dance routine required for switching things on and off. Also, the ability to plug in headphones, or straight to the PA and get consistent results every time. For me, I'd say it's advantages outweigh the limitations of the DSP. And if I do hit the wall and run out of fx, it's time to stop fiddling and start playing again, lol.
I use the Pod Go on bass. Playing live, the ‘amp out’ jack is an excellent feature on the Pod Go that I plug into the return of my effects loop of my amp. This way I’m using the preamp of the Pod Go with the power section of my amp. I plug the Pod Go’s output to the mixer to include cab simulation. Also, the bass overdrives are excellent. Pod Go is brilliant for bass.
Enjoyed the review. I started with the Helix Floor in 2017. In Dec 2019 I bought the HX Stomp as a scaled-back rig for those Sundays when I played only acoustic & didn't need all the effects of the full Helix and didn't want to lug my big Helix Floor. But then the PodGo came out, with the built-in Exp pedal, and I bought it in May 2020 to replace the Stomp. However I soon realized that the Stomp had a lot more flexibility and DSP power in terms of customizing a signal path than did/does the PodGo. But I didn't like the fact that the Stomp only has 3 foot switches, limiting the number of Snapshots and ability to switch easily between Presets. In other words, I liked the user interface of the PodGo better than the Stomp, but I liked the signal creation flexibility of the Stomp better than the PodGo! Along comes the Stomp XL, which combines the signal creation flexibility and DSP power of the Stomp with the better user interface of the PodGo! So I just bought the Stomp XL a few weeks ago, and I'm going to sell the Stomp and PodGo. Yes, the XL lacks the Exp pedal of the PodGo, but I don't mind adding an external Exp pedal. And the whole thing is still way smaller/compact than my full Helix Floor rig. I still love the full Helix, and I use that when playing lead guitar or when I'm the only guitar player. But if I'm playing only rhythm or acoustic, and don't need the full power of the Helix, the Stomp XL is perfect. Oh, and yes, you can change the direction of the Preset/Bank Up/Down footswitches: Global Settings --> Footswitches --> Swap Up/Down ON
I'm afraid you forgot to mention that the XL has both MIDI IN and OUT ports, whereas the POD Go only has MIDI through USB. So, if MIDI is a priority, then the XL is the way to go.

So I have owned both the regular HX Stomp and now the PodGo, and there is a significant difference with the guitar input. The Helix models and HX Stomp models all have a guitar input impedance circuit on the input jack, whereas the PodGo does not have the circuit. There is a difference in tone and feel that I can tell. To me, the PodGo seems less crisp when running clean tones. Furthermore, the PodGo can only sample IRs at 100ms, whereas the Stomp can sample them at 200ms. That can make a slight or significant difference depending on the player or IR used. All in all, they are both fantastic products IMO
@@prometherion3089 I mainly use the IR functionality in the PodGo for acoustic impulse responses to give my acoustic guitar better plugged in tone (more mic like), but also as a replacement for the built in electric cabs in the PodGo. I simply like the IR cabs I have much better. And while I don’t fully understand your question, if you have a physical amp head that is crucial for your tone, and you don’t want to carry around your speaker cabinet, you can run the amp head in the effects loop of the HX Stomp or PodGo and then use an IR cabinet of your choice for digital cab emulations. I personally have not done this, so I cannot comment on how well this works, but I’m sure people do this.
@Prometherion Soto clarify, in IR or Impulse Response is a 'capture' of a mic'd up cab. It replaces the cab. You can put an IR after an amp model, or just as @bluetinmusic said, you can run the amp head (only) section through the FX loop of your HX/POD Go and use an IR as the 'digital' cab...This would allow you to use your person real-life amp and still go direct to FOH.

I have a tip for you on this one. Buy a Line6 Catalyst amp - it already had built in Helix amp, reverb, and delay simulations (or pitch effects) and channel switching, which you can use for an alternative config. Then, you can run a Pod Go into it for effects (just turn off the amp/cab simulation). So all your OD/distortion pedals. This is a pretty versatile setup.
@2:28 that's me every day... So, I have both ... and did compare both the HX stomp and the POD against my Helix LT as I needed a travel rig. The HX stomp sounds definitely better, and in fact, the Helix LT and the HX Stomp XL sound the same, although some of my LT patches are not compatible with the HX stomp due to the number of blocks. One factor I think you didn't mention was the patch portability between the Helix products, including HX native, which is a big plus for some. So between the sound difference, which might be less noticeable in a band context, and the patch portability and flexibility, going with the HX Stomp was a no brainer for me. But both are really nice units, though, as most Line 6 products. Nice video
Hi there! Where i live (Brazil) we have a huge difference in the price of these two products. Stomp XL costs almost 2x the price of the POD Go. In this scenario, which one would you buy?
POD Go definitely to use as all in one! I even use the XL as all in one all the time. Just miss the expression pedal sometimes. If I knew 1) I wanted it on a pedalboard with other pedals 2) really cared about a parallel split path, then I’d invest in the XL. Otherwise the POD Go. The split path is really great for creating a wet / dry sounds. Like for bass players, who like to run an overdrive in parallel so the full signal goes through the top path and a distortion is applied in parallel. Sounds a lot better. But MOST of the time those are not issues for me
Since I'm specifically looking for something that works with guitar, bass, and synths, I need the midi clocking. Looks like Stomp XL is the way. Thanks!
Good afternoon. I just came across your video because I am trying to decide between these two units and TH-cam led me to your video. Thanks for all the information. With the current pricing being $749 for the XL and $499 for the Pod Go, it's now a $250 difference. With the addition of Pod Go 2.0 software update and the price difference, I'm curious what you would recommend for someone who is leading worship so I don't have the mental flexibility to be switching a lot of things during songs. Maybe just a boost for chorus, slightly different sound for bridge, etc, but not playing lots of lead stuff or switching around a lot. Would the Pod Go be a great option for the cost savings, or would the extra $250 still be worth the flexibility that the XL offers? Curious to know your thoughts two years removed from making this video. Thanks!
Thank you! As a bass player I love effects and actually get to use them in my original band lol, and seen Ian Martin using the stomp same with Janek, then got curious about the XL then seen the Go, and didn’t know what would be better, but you helped me make my decision, so the XL it is! Thanks!!
Normally the HX Stomp XL is $750. The $650 is a current sale price. Have the Pod Go. If the HX Stomp XL was $650 when I bought the Pod Go, would've gone with the the stomp. Seems more versitile. I'm really missing the MIDI ports.
So OT but why does it look like the Go has stamp markings for LED fittings on the side of each button? Did they have a prototype with that and decide to cut costs in final production?
Hey, I’m not familiar with these units. Are the number of “blocks” the number of seller are effects you can save in one preset? Only 4 blocks might be a bit too limited for me but I’m not sure if I understand correctly what that means. Any help is appreciated!
The HX Stomp XL has 8 empty blocks that you can fill with whatever you want (as DSP allows). So in theory you could have 8 Overdrives! In the POD Go, 6 of the 10 blocks are already set for a particular type of effects (Amp, cab, fx loop, volume, wah, and EQ). That ;eave 4 empty blocks to add whatever you want. The set blocks can be changed to any effect you want within it's type...meaning you can choose whatever amp you want in the amp block...but you can't make it a reverb...hope that makes sense
Idk if you “need” it. Both sound good for bass but know that if you get the Stomp, it has a stereo parallel path. Meaning you can drop things down on a B path which a lot of people like to do their overdrives for bass. That way you get the overdrive tone on top of the bass tone, but the a path still retains the full bass tone. So you’ll know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever played bass, and then put on a tube screamer in series, you get a nice over driven sound, but it cuts a lot of the low end out being able to bring things down on another path solve that issue.
Hey HWL, I’m looking at both of these and I found out about the hx stomp xl from a friend who got one and I loved it. Then I found out about the pod go and liked the price and the expression pedal, however I did not like the fact in how limited it is. I’m looking for a pedal that just is completely versatile for everything. I’m on a worship team and love to play for fun also. In your opinion which one can I be more versatile with?
hmmmm....do you want it to be an all-in-one only? Because the expression with the POD Go is really great. It's light weight....but doesn't really fit on a pedalboard very well if that's a goal. It is a little more limited technically as far as DSP, but you don't really notice because they took out any of the effects that take up a lot. ( I never use those anyways). The main pros of the XL is that its small enough to fit on a pedalboard AND it has the capability to do parallel routing. Meaning you can drag effects down on the B Path to create some other sounds. Run a wet / dry sound for example...or even run multiple instruments thru it at the same time. What do you think is most important for you?
I really want a all in one pedal bored. However I was also wondering does the pod go have 4 or 6 blocks? Like I saw your video on the pod go jail break, and then I heard a roomer that line 6 did a update for the pod go that allowed it to have 6 block’s instead of 4. I don’t know if it’s true however. Do you know anything about that update and whether it’s true?
Bottom line is your application. Everyone has a pedal story but I am concluding with convenience and applied limitations. The Helix Floor is a beast and can satisfy most players who like building guitar tones and the back panel is loaded with conveniences. However, it is Big, somewhat heavy like a packed pedal board. I love mine but got tired of hauling it back and forth to church. So I bought an HX Stomp XL, found a new Line 6 expression pedal cheaply and have found the XL to be the answer. I truly love the tones I'm getting and it is less complicated than my Helix Floor. My leads are crisp and dreamy and fills are working perfectly with my presets that can be tweaked when needed with HX Edit. Loving it.
Yes...I noticed as well...it happened when I switched to my single coil pickup. I know they are more noisy, but I haven't had time to figure out how to fix it...I feel like it's a power thing in my studio...which is not finalized yet...still moving things around...all that to say, it's not the XL.
Super helpful. We use kemper amps at church, so I don’t need amps at church, but I don’t have an amp at home, so being able to run 8 effects at church and have amps for practicing at home would be great! Currently just running a regular stomp, it’s great but a little limiting with just 2 switches. Also I play bass and guitar.
I noticed a stereo image with the XL that the pod go didn't have. I'm curious about the DSP limitations... How many effects can you stack on the Pod Go? At least rev cho and delay?
The DSP is less, but they have removed the higher DSP effects in order for it not to overload. But all the effects are stereo if they come after the cab. There's no way to turn that off.
Random question: can the POD Go function as a midi controller if I wanted to start/stop click tracks with it? I know the Helix has that capability, but didn’t know if the Go could?
@@HeyWorshipLeader awesome, thanks for the response! I picked up a POD GO recently and have been enjoying it! I typically lead from acoustic so it’s been a nice change!
Quick question: Does the CIOKs power supply work on the Pod Go. I have built my pedalboard around the Go and wanted to use the CIOKS for the power supply but was told it may not be enough. Seems to be working with you.
I really want a all in one pedal bored. However 1 was also wondering does the pod go have 4 or 6 blocks? Do you know anything about that update and whether it's true?
POD Go only has 4 blocks that are unassigned....the other blocks are pre-assigned to a certain effects,...but you can change the model of that effect. for example...one is pre-assigned to an EQ block...you can choose which ever EQ block you want....just can't change it to a reverb. The JailBreak preset allows you to remove some of those pre-assigned blocks

I agree with you, and like I said in the video...I don't think you can go wrong... they are both great. If having everything being in one place (all-in-one) POD Go has built in expression. You'd have to add that to the XL. But the XL is more versatile. Having said that...I find myself using both quite often and enjoying both
I know....I saw that..honestly, I'm not sure if I just saw a sale when I recorded this or what....but that def makes it an easier decision of price is the main issue.
Not sure how that could be. Both use the same HX core engine/algorithms. It's the same amps/cabs/effects minus a few DSP intensive ones in the Pod Go (as Jimmy mentioned). Blind A-B would be the way to know for sure.
Yes I believe there’s a difference. I commented about the Helix and HX Stomp models all having a guitar impedance circuit on the input jack, but the PodGo does not have this. In my experience, there is a slight difference in the quality of the tone and feel
Ok! Everyone, I decided to make a video and put all 4 units head to head with the EXACT settings and make sure they are all stereo! I must have moved the cab behind the delay's and forgot about it because that was definitely recorded in mono. My apologies. I'll make sure all Global EQ's are off, and that every preset is set up with the lowest common denominator...I this case the POD Go. And we'll if there are any differences...I'll even loop my playing for each recording! ok...time to record!

The XL sounds better to me. There is more grit presuming you played the patches in order in both demos.
Why don’t they just add a volume pedal on the XL and call it a day???
hahaha good thought
Sorry I don't understand 😭
Loving it.
Anyone else notice a noise on the right side of the XL samples?
Yes...I noticed as well...it happened when I switched to my single coil pickup. I know they are more noisy, but I haven't had time to figure out how to fix it...I feel like it's a power thing in my studio...which is not finalized yet...still moving things around...all that to say, it's not the XL.
@@HeyWorshipLeader if it’s the single coil pups, why is it way louder on the right than the left?
Alot of extra noise with the xl. Pod go very clean. Just not stereo to my ears.
Super helpful. We use kemper amps at church, so I don’t need amps at church, but I don’t have an amp at home, so being able to run 8 effects at church and have amps for practicing at home would be great! Currently just running a regular stomp, it’s great but a little limiting with just 2 switches. Also I play bass and guitar.
nice!
Hey, can I set two outputs in the stomp ? one for DI and other to go through an amp?
Yes!!
@@HeyWorshipLeader awesome! Thankyou
I noticed a stereo image with the XL that the pod go didn't have. I'm curious about the DSP limitations... How many effects can you stack on the Pod Go? At least rev cho and delay?
Podgo has half the DSP as the HX/Helix pedals so you can’t use stereo effects or split signal flow to use two amps/IRs
The DSP is less, but they have removed the higher DSP effects in order for it not to overload. But all the effects are stereo if they come after the cab. There's no way to turn that off.
You're right about not being able to split to a parallel pat, but all the effects are stereo. There's no way to turn that off.
Random question: can the POD Go function as a midi controller if I wanted to start/stop click tracks with it? I know the Helix has that capability, but didn’t know if the Go could?
I haven't done it but I know it can...I think you'd need to use midi over usb...I actually have the stuff to try it but gotta find the time soon!
@@HeyWorshipLeader awesome, thanks for the response! I picked up a POD GO recently and have been enjoying it! I typically lead from acoustic so it’s been a nice change!
i want some presets that are effects only, so HX Stomp XL
That makes sense!
Hey, could you still run other analog pedals through a PodGo? Wondering if there is a way to expanded without getting rid of the PodGo
Yes! It has a stereo fx loop!
Awesome! Thanks!
Just bought a new Tele and HX Stomp XL. But I haven't bought a case yet. What case do you have for your guitar that makes that XL fit so beautifully?
That case is a Reverend case that came with my guitar. I haven’t tried it with my gator case yet, when I get back in town I’ll try it
@@HeyWorshipLeader Thank you for all you do!
Quick question: Does the CIOKs power supply work on the Pod Go. I have built my pedalboard around the Go and wanted to use the CIOKS for the power supply but was told it may not be enough. Seems to be working with you.
It does!
Just saw the worship ldr thing…HELL NAW !!!!
Eh? 🤷🏼
Dsp?
the Xl technically has more DSP, but they took out the heavier effects from the POD Go so there isn't really an issue as far as how many you can use.
Nice hint at “you won’t relent” at the 7:13 minute marker. Lol
Any issues with the Cioks? I have an Ojai which should be enough power (1A when doubled) but it's cutting it close for me.
The Cioks is a beast...never had issues with it

POD Go only has 4 blocks that are unassigned....the other blocks are pre-assigned to a certain effects,...but you can change the model of that effect. for example...one is pre-assigned to an EQ block...you can choose which ever EQ block you want....just can't change it to a reverb. The JailBreak preset allows you to remove some of those pre-assigned blocks
Hi how i go to jailbreak my Pod Go?

Great information,thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I agree with you, and like I said in the video...I don't think you can go wrong... they are both great. If having everything being in one place (all-in-one) POD Go has built in expression. You'd have to add that to the XL. But the XL is more versatile. Having said that...I find myself using both quite often and enjoying both
And the pod go freezes up, often
7 months later - HX Stomp XL is $100 more at $750 - what the heck!!!
I know....I saw that..honestly, I'm not sure if I just saw a sale when I recorded this or what....but that def makes it an easier decision of price is the main issue.
7:17 That's weird. I've never noticed those little hexagon stamps on any pod go.
Great comparison video by the way.
Thanks! Yeah, I know...I don't really like the way they look either
I actually thought the Stomp XL sounded better. Is that possible?
Not sure how that could be. Both use the same HX core engine/algorithms. It's the same amps/cabs/effects minus a few DSP intensive ones in the Pod Go (as Jimmy mentioned). Blind A-B would be the way to know for sure.
Sounds like the POD GO was recorded in mono whereas the Stomp XL was recorded in stereo. Hence why the XL sounds better.
I assume the POD GO would've sounded way closer to the Stomp XL if it was recorded in stereo.
Expand one with the other.
True! Both is always the best answer! haha
hx stomp xl = $750.00
I know...prices gone up
