My head canon is that the Andorians took the human phase cannon design and combined the tech with their own (probably Nadion based) particle weapon design. Making a surprise improvement in power and versatility which quickly becomes the main weaponry of Andorian ships, before Starfleet adopts the Phaser design for their own ships.

When you got to the Klingon section, I’m surprised you missed the obvious speciality of the species. From all that was mentioned about how they acquire their technology, the Klingons seem to be specialists in reverse engineering. Even when encountering tech far more advance then their own, the Klingons seem to easily be able to reverse engineer, understand, and recreate the technology whether it be their warp drives to Romulan cloaking technology and etc.
Perhaps I’m looking too deeply into it but goes to show how the Klingons are unique in terms of innovation.

One of my favorite part about DS9 is that for once we see why the klingons are a fiersome speices to have in a conflict. while the moral of everyone is downing with the constant updating of the casualty list, you can see the klingon's moral going up as time goes. you see them coming back from battle chanting and cheering everyone happy that it was a blood bath with tons of great warriors entering sto-vo-kor.

    • @Josiahiswatching
      @Josiahiswatching 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think that is one of Klingons greatest strengths: tenacity and wisdom. They can literally be enslaved by a technologically more advanced species and in rebelling not only fling them off their planet and chase them to the stars but also make it as they are never heard from again in that sector of space. Kingpins are hardy and they take a beating and an old Klingon is often a wise Klingon because they can take the lumps and keep going. And theirs is a history of such individuals thousands of years old. They are unafraid to try and seize opportunities and that gives them an edge over more cautious (Vulcan) or fragile (humans) species .

Honestly, the Klingons are kind of crap at combat & war. They win wars sometimes sure, but it is always at way too high losses. They are supposedly naturally physically stronger, training all their life in martial arts and pain tolerance, yet Klingons armed with close combat weapons are regularly defeated by humans using only the palm of their hands and they don't fare much better in space either, even when they still had a serious technological advantage, and come up against enemies with supposedly far less combat optimised vessels.
Ironically, when they use real subterfuge, their successes are far more genuine and surprising and their losses far more a last ditch efford barely succeeding by their opponents. Sure cheating can always even the odds, but I mean relatively to other galatic powers their military sucks in all but numbers and willingness to die in combat, but their intelligence work is surprisingly good.

Something you forgot, which is also what makes the Klingons formidable as a galactic superpower: their devotion to their honor as individuals and a people, plus their ferocity of conviction and determination to their brothers and sisters in arms. That's a powerful combination, especially if you consider how harsh of an environment that Q'onoS really was back in the early periods of their evolution and society. In other words, it's an empire of barbarian ninja berserker brawler swordsmen duelists. Oh and they practice Klingon yoga.

If I had to find a specific strength for Klingons, it would be that they're masters at not only reverse-engineering captured technologies, but improving upon them. They make better cloaks than Romulans; their ships, while ultimately based on stolen Hur'q technology, are tougher than anyone else's; their weapons are second to none. Their technology is designed to be usable with minimal training (well, except their melee weapons - bat'leths and mek'leths are almost as dangerous to the wielder as the opponent), and capable of standing up to extremely rough handling.

If the Klingons acquired their technology in battle, then they must be very good at reverse engineering: figuring out how something works and replicating it without training or instruction manuals. Have some Klingon engineers on your fancy Cardassian built ship. They, like Soviet engineers here on Earth, can probably fix anything with a coat hanger, duct tape and WD 40 and, if SHTF, they are very handy in a fight.

I feel like Romulans should of developed the best censors. They spend most of their history developing tech to avoid detection and encryption which would incentivise the opposite: code breaking and detection. It would be a circular evolution within their own society. Ergo they SHOULD have by far the best sensors.

    I want more of this.
Might I suggest ferrangi are honestly good at diplomacy (when they aren't being pirates) and exploration? They have to find suitable markets and make sales with the people of those markets.
Also supposedly holodeck technology came from them in some roundabout way? Ditto synthahol?
But beyond greedy money grubbers ferrangi are honestly great for diplomacy and inter species trade. Plus their bilogy is diffrent enough from galactic norms that empsths and telepaths typically find it hard to rad them.

Honestly the klingons would likely produce very good mercenaries, it'd be one of the few ways klingons could have 'honorable' combat in times of peace.
I.e. if there aren't any wars at the time klingon officers could be rented out by the KDF to keep their talents sharp.

I see the klingons as a people who excel in their martial ability (waaaagh!), their engineering prowess (ship classes that last 100's of years with only the innards being updated), and as mariners (to go so far and so boldly without much of the safety tech that everyone else uses, leaning on their viking inspiration here.)
Of course their conquered vassals and slaves, which I feel never really gets addressed in trek, filling in their weakspots wherever a weaker klingon houses, or house-less klingons cannot be used to do it. (Bat'leth make poor ploughs.)

From a human standpoint, of course we look like the all rounders. What if, in real life, one alien race is in the middle and we are an extreme. We could be extremely backwards techwise. We could be too homogeneous, or not homogeneous enough if the aliens are equals with each other. We could be too warlike, not warlike enough, too religious, too secular...

I think for the benefit of the community it would be awesome to have a video that focuses on what the Federation Founding Races brought to the organization. You managed to focus on many of the UFP races we see in the Generation Era, but not so much the TOS/ENT era. I almost think species like the Trill and Betazoids may have been better featured in Part 2 with the "Terrans", Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites the focus of the first part.
Meh, perhaps it would be an interesting idea to have a small video series that explains the hallmarks of what each Federation race brought to the table.

American English isn't necessarily assumed to be articulate like academic rhetoric. Cockny, Jive, Funk... Those have become, basically urban dialects. Until you speak eloquently enough, most people unconsciously think (Americans... Geesh!) Until you transcribe meaning relevantly in an intrinsic fashion, and by any means regardless of didactic, then you are stuck with "how the world views Americans."
