One of my favorite part about DS9 is that for once we see why the klingons are a fiersome speices to have in a conflict. while the moral of everyone is downing with the constant updating of the casualty list, you can see the klingon's moral going up as time goes. you see them coming back from battle chanting and cheering everyone happy that it was a blood bath with tons of great warriors entering sto-vo-kor.
When you got to the Klingon section, I’m surprised you missed the obvious speciality of the species. From all that was mentioned about how they acquire their technology, the Klingons seem to be specialists in reverse engineering. Even when encountering tech far more advance then their own, the Klingons seem to easily be able to reverse engineer, understand, and recreate the technology whether it be their warp drives to Romulan cloaking technology and etc. Perhaps I’m looking too deeply into it but goes to show how the Klingons are unique in terms of innovation.
I'd say the Klingons are highly adaptable to hardships; if that hardship happens to occur through battle, all the better. They can repurpose and adapt recovered tech. While humans are equally adaptable but more in line with problem solving and developing or modifying existing tech to get them out of a bind.
I think that is one of Klingons greatest strengths: tenacity and wisdom. They can literally be enslaved by a technologically more advanced species and in rebelling not only fling them off their planet and chase them to the stars but also make it as they are never heard from again in that sector of space. Kingpins are hardy and they take a beating and an old Klingon is often a wise Klingon because they can take the lumps and keep going. And theirs is a history of such individuals thousands of years old. They are unafraid to try and seize opportunities and that gives them an edge over more cautious (Vulcan) or fragile (humans) species .

Great video, the Cardassians are one of my favorite species and I always viewed them as equivalent to humans but decided to be conquers rather than friendly collaboraters and that more than anything limited their tech development leaving it a generation or so behind Starfleet in most respects. Probably about where humans would be in the Star Trek universe if they stuck to themselves and pursued development alone.
I think the Cardies are supposed to be a lot smarter than humans on average. From what we seen in canon, they would have eidetic memory. This is what made them formidable opponents.
If I had to find a specific strength for Klingons, it would be that they're masters at not only reverse-engineering captured technologies, but improving upon them. They make better cloaks than Romulans; their ships, while ultimately based on stolen Hur'q technology, are tougher than anyone else's; their weapons are second to none. Their technology is designed to be usable with minimal training (well, except their melee weapons - bat'leths and mek'leths are almost as dangerous to the wielder as the opponent), and capable of standing up to extremely rough handling.
The AK47 of technological philosophies. Does it do the job and will it keep doing that job? If so, it's what we want, for the minimal resources required.
I find it interesting that Trek gets so much credit for removing stereotypes when all they really did was move them from humans to aliens. All Klingons are alike, all Ferengi are greedy, Romulans are sneaky, etc.
I like this area of thought but I have a idea to add. Cardassia has had to rebuild its own homeworld any number of times. In “Chain of Command” the interrogator said how in his childhood the planet was in ruins. Then came the conflicts we’re familiar with where the planet was blasted again and again, but in short order things seem (due to stock footage) to back to the way they were before. And none of that work would be done by imported rebellious slave labor. I believe that the defining skill of the Cardassian people is not merely the building of ships but in construction in general. Thanks for listening, keep on keeping on.
I feel like Romulans should of developed the best censors. They spend most of their history developing tech to avoid detection and encryption which would incentivise the opposite: code breaking and detection. It would be a circular evolution within their own society. Ergo they SHOULD have by far the best sensors.
Klingons are also master shipbuilders as their vessels were almost immune to the Breen energy drain weapon that crippled the Federation and Romulan fleets.
Cardassians are a tale of two technological baselines: 1) Pre-Dominion, 2) Post-Dominion. By the annexation by the Dominion, the Cardassians had actually caught up a bit with the Big Three. They had improved weapons, warp drives etc. The advances in the Obsidian Order Keldon classes, some of which were gleaned from the Romulans had become more widespread. However they were still behind. However, that changes overnight when they join the Dominion. Once they had Dominion know-how, the two combined into a distinct and unique technology, Cardassian weapons became very fearsome. The heavy spiral-wave disruptor cannons were equal to Federation Type XII, able to one shit kill B'Rel Class BoPs, the Dominion Attack Ship and Green Frigates. Cardassian plasma torpedoes were very effective and they had also developed quantum torpedoes. Their shield technology took a huge leap forward as well as seen with the regenerative shields. The Cardassians also achieved breakthroughs in replication technology that benefited all areas of their industrial sector, So, at the end of the War Cardassia was devastated, but in terms of technology, they were completely caught up with the Federation, Klingons and Romulans with the fusion of Dominion-Cardassian tech being equal to, and often superior, to the others. Post-War there is no reason to believe that they would be constrained by the same issues with resources anymore. Thanks to Dominion technology the base of the Cardassian economy was so far expanded that they were able to build more ships than any of the rival powers. So after they rebuilt, they could credibly look to a rather comfortable future. No more famines. No more scarcity. With Federation help, they could rebuild, and then use all that new technology to really improve themselves and their society. Cardassian space is still pretty big, room enough to prosper. I would say that 20 years after the War, they should be akin to West Germany and Japan in the 60s-80s. A large growing economic power that no longer needs to maintain a huge military. That said, their fleet would still be rather big and more than adequate for defense and feature a new generation of warships, and even starships, the equal of anything the Klingons or Romulans could field. With the Romulan Empire torn asunder after the Hobus Nova, Cardassia might actually become the third biggest power. But without being belligerent. Like Sweden on steroids; a major power, but neutral, and perhaps looked to by nonaligned worlds as a model for existence outside the Federation-Klingon Bloc.
The stand-out oversight in this video was the Ferengi, given how they were also introduced in TNG but got their biggest cultural exploration in DS9 and they're a more widespread species than the Bajorans and they're a power in their own right they could have been included quite easily.
This should definitely be a series. Please consider a comparison between Tellarite and Bajoran agriculture, between the Vulcan and Trill approaches to science, amd the tactics of the Klingpns vs the Andorians.
Well the Ferengi are actually quite impressive technologically once they put their minds into it. It was a Ferengi that invented Multi-Phasic shields. Self replicating mines was an afterthought of Rom. There is also the disabling wave tech the Marauders were equipped with. During wartime where resources were scarce Nog was a logistics genius. I imagine Admiralty would want to adopt him for it.

I want more of this. Might I suggest ferrangi are honestly good at diplomacy (when they aren't being pirates) and exploration? They have to find suitable markets and make sales with the people of those markets. Also supposedly holodeck technology came from them in some roundabout way? Ditto synthahol? But beyond greedy money grubbers ferrangi are honestly great for diplomacy and inter species trade. Plus their bilogy is diffrent enough from galactic norms that empsths and telepaths typically find it hard to rad them.
I would definitely like to see more. Species like Vidians (they were good with medicine if I remember correctly), Voth,Gorn,Breen, maybe some Gamma quadrant species as well
I would assign communication to the UFP as well. They have a huge area and need powerful and reliable communication technology to keep it organized. The Romulans are Security and Espionage. Only the Founders, Garak and maybe Section 31 managed to fool them occasionally.
Don't forget about the Bolians. A ship just isn't complete if it doesn't have a Bolian barber. I mean imagine Picard if he had Liminey Snickets looking hair because of want for a Bolian barber? Who would keep Riker's beard so neat, and tame Worf's eyebrows. Every ship needs a Bolian Barber! The coiffeur is indispensable on board starships especially for those first contact situations.
I liked it but I feel cheated out of the Ferengi. I was glad that you covered all of the others that I would have hoped for though. Those alien people plus the Ferengi are all on the main list of groups that I expect to frequent a star trek story. Well, them and the Borg and members of the continuum aside from the random ones.
Klingons bring ship design to the table. Their ships are remarkably hardy and self sufficient. And they pack a remarkable amount of power on a small frame. Look at how much trouble the Federation had in developing their own bird of prey (the Defiant) The power systems nearly destroyed their own ship. Other Federation ships seem to fall apart after just a few hits. Meanwhile, Klingon ships usually take an absolute beating even when the shields are down.
I think for the benefit of the community it would be awesome to have a video that focuses on what the Federation Founding Races brought to the organization. You managed to focus on many of the UFP races we see in the Generation Era, but not so much the TOS/ENT era. I almost think species like the Trill and Betazoids may have been better featured in Part 2 with the "Terrans", Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites the focus of the first part. Meh, perhaps it would be an interesting idea to have a small video series that explains the hallmarks of what each Federation race brought to the table.
Yes, do more videos along this line. I thought the fact you brought out about the Klingon tacticians was most insightful! So yes, do as many as you can think of, like the Ferengi most likely could optimize many aspects of any business, i.e. they would make for great accountants, and possibly great Project Managers.
In TNG Romulan tech was generally thought to be better than Starfleet equivalents. For example, when the Romulans built a quick copy of a Starfleet phaser rifle, the crew of the Enterprise figured out it was a fake because it was too efficient.
I always considered Earth's specialty to be Deflector and Transporter technology which also expands into Replicators and Holographic Systems as those technologies become more common. Vulcan I always thought of as more a Theoretical and Health Science specialist planet since they are naturally inclined for theoretical work and their studies into mental health and neuroscience are usually cornerstone mentions in cannon for Vulcans. Klingons I would agree they are hard to lock down a specialty besides warfare and subjugation, same with Romulans being masters of Spy Craft though apparently their artists produced some of the best art in the Beta Quadrant
i always wondered if the Ferengee after Rom got to be Nagus and the new way of life became the norm might have aided their considerable negotiation skills to the federation
I say break it down to major powers by each quadrant. Then comeback with a comparison of all quadrants specialties against each other. Four war like, four techy, and four best encryptionest.
The Obsidian Order should have been mentioned here "Not even the Romulan Tal-Shiar can compete with them when it comes to information gathering and covert operations".
Romulan's: best cyber-security experts and masters of network protection. Klingons: best tacticians and possible good Privateers. The Federation: absolutely great at exploration and cultural knowledge, also good at science, engineering, diplomacy and (thanks to bajor) the most outstanding chefs with the best quality cuisine out there and travel is safe. ( as long as your not a smuggler. ) it's pretty good. 5/10
so this video did the alpha and beta quadrants. Part two should be about the Delta and Gamma quadrants. For example one very good species to do would be the Vidiians and they're extremely superior medical technology, which can be used both as a weapon and as a sophisticated tool for medical treatment. Another one would be the Voth, with their distaste for endotherm's and they're highly sophisticated personal cell technology which allowed them to observe Voyager at least for a while without being detected. The Vodwar might be another good delta species to cover.
I would like to see more of this. Lot of other people have given their lists of races and their things you should cover next; but I'd like to add to the Klingons. I think you missed a thing that they are strangely good at, that has been shown a few times in the shows and in the apocrypha and that's that they are weirdly quite adept at genetic technology; creating a clone of Kahless, and hiding the Suliban intel in that dude's DNA, to cite a couple.
Andorians: The potential for war of the Klingons, the suspicion and guile of a Romulun tempered and expressed simultaneously by the adaptability and compassion of a human.
I hadn't considered that the Romulans would be masters of decryption and encryption. Given their paranoid culture. As I recall, there was a TNG episode where this was implied. Data was having trouble decrypting the files of a high ranking Romulan official, and had accept Spock's help to succeed.
You could say the Klingons are better at adapting and integrating technology than any other power, except maybe the borg. They always adapted the fastest in the war against Cardassia, Breen and the Dominion. They were the first to adapt to Dominion shield piercing weapons and transporter. The first to adapt to the Breen power dispursor. They are also the best at Logistics. Something not usually a Klingon Stereotype. But think of it. They not only implemented technology changes to their whole fleets much faster than the other alpha quadrant powers, they also survived their main powersource moon being destroyed! Even while every other power speculated in the fall of the empire, they not only survived but also continued to expand and modernize their fleets, having a smaller fleet only to the much bigger Federation and Dominion in the war. They are also efficient at integrating every conquest they do take in any war seen on screen.
8:25 FWIW, The former second in command of the Obsidian Order thought he could out-spycraft the Star Empire. And by the end of the episode he's proven right.

Hell yea, do more like this!
It was very good
I admire your guesswork on Trek lore and salute you sir lol.
Stay well out there everybody, and God bless you friends. :)
In the words of Gul Dukat to the Dominion, "I've learned never to underestimate the Federation's technical skill."
This should definitely be a series. Please consider a comparison between Tellarite and Bajoran agriculture, between the Vulcan and Trill approaches to science, amd the tactics of the Klingpns vs the Andorians.
I would love to see more on this subject. There is so much to explore here, I believe.
Thank you Rick, Interesting topic, I would like to know more about the Delta Quadrant species. Have a great day.
I quite like the idea of a fantasy ship's crew (like fantasy football teams) video. Perhaps a ship design, as well?
Well the Ferengi are actually quite impressive technologically once they put their minds into it. It was a Ferengi that invented Multi-Phasic shields. Self replicating mines was an afterthought of Rom. There is also the disabling wave tech the Marauders were equipped with.
During wartime where resources were scarce Nog was a logistics genius. I imagine Admiralty would want to adopt him for it.
Idea for a new buddy comedy:
A Tholian and Breen get an apartment together...
That is a hell of a crew captain.
I'd say something for Federation computer systems, they seem pretty consistently unequalled by anything else, especially in the field of AI.
They do have this tiny flaw of becoming sentient once in awhile :)
@@kingssman2 what is a flaw, but a diamond seeking some polish ;)
Federation culture created Data. Not many others did like.
@@brodriguez11000 Data should be the natural next step allowing ai to evolve naturally could lead to errors or lack of morality instead creating learning androids like data allows the healthiest path to peace bewteen AI and organics by putting them on the same mental grounds in regards to morality making them nothing more then a more intelligent form of what ever nations people that made them and "raised" them.
of course this would mean thered be war obbssed klingon ai cold and cruel romulan ai or peacefull yet apathetic ai like vulcans but at least then theyd still be better then AI vs organic mindset

Probably a dumb question in these comments, but did you see “Picard” yet? Won’t spoil anything if you haven’t.
I think encryption by that time would just be use of one time pads for everything of any importance. It’s probably unbreakable, which makes anything else very silly to use.
Not to mention the astrometrics lab in Voyager, as far as advanced Federation scanning technology. yes seven helped by integrating borg technology but she had ostensibly been assimilated / reintegrated into the Federation at this point.
_we look for things, things to make us go_
Well humans where famed for there technical skill and ingenuity, and where highly adaptable to new situations quickly overcoming problems presented to them
I want more of this.
I really enjoyed this thank you
I would definitely like to see more. Species like Vidians (they were good with medicine if I remember correctly), Voth,Gorn,Breen, maybe some Gamma quadrant species as well
I never patterned or thought of the lore in such a way. Very interesting. Cheers!
In DS9, Federation engineers were hyperbolically referred to as being able to make replicators from stones.
I believe the line is rocks into replicators
@@spartan078ben That sounds right. It's been a while since I saw it.
I would assign communication to the UFP as well. They have a huge area and need powerful and reliable communication technology to keep it organized.
The Romulans are Security and Espionage. Only the Founders, Garak and maybe Section 31 managed to fool them occasionally.
UFP are the Borg, just nice about it.
Andorians, Ferangi would be cool for part 2
the UFP being exploration angled does make sense as I am sure Gene wanted them to basically be NASA but with FTL travel.
Great vid keep it up
Good content idea Rick, how about Changeling's and Andorian's.
Part 2, should consist of the species of the Delta Quadrant
I always considered Earth's specialty to be Deflector and Transporter technology which also expands into Replicators and Holographic Systems as those technologies become more common. Vulcan I always thought of as more a Theoretical and Health Science specialist planet since they are naturally inclined for theoretical work and their studies into mental health and neuroscience are usually cornerstone mentions in cannon for Vulcans. Klingons I would agree they are hard to lock down a specialty besides warfare and subjugation, same with Romulans being masters of Spy Craft though apparently their artists produced some of the best art in the Beta Quadrant
thank you for this video . part two could be borg (horrsions) voyger dominion . keep up the good work i aways look out for your videos.
i always wondered if the Ferengee after Rom got to be Nagus and the new way of life became the norm might have aided their considerable negotiation skills to the federation
This is intresting id like to see another
tracker beams, transporter and defensive shields, etc.
- good observations
I would like to see more of this. Lot of other people have given their lists of races and their things you should cover next; but I'd like to add to the Klingons. I think you missed a thing that they are strangely good at, that has been shown a few times in the shows and in the apocrypha and that's that they are weirdly quite adept at genetic technology; creating a clone of Kahless, and hiding the Suliban intel in that dude's DNA, to cite a couple.
This was really interesting! I'd love to see you tackle the Borg and the Dominion.
This topic could make a great serise of videos.👍
Andorians: The potential for war of the Klingons, the suspicion and guile of a Romulun tempered and expressed simultaneously by the adaptability and compassion of a human.
I'd like to see a part two. Maybe add a Horta planetary science officer, Tellarite engineer and a Hirogen MACO comando
the krenin and their expertise at of not only making time travel possible but also their impresive simulation methods.
I'd love a part 2.
Xindi, Borg, Q, maybe 8472?
