They were waaay ahead of their time, the performances, lyrics even the production levels are still of high quality even today. Don Gumbo was a legend it is sad the way he passed though

Keith was also Tuku's tour sound engineer in the early 2000s. I met him when they toured the UK in 2002. I was one of the DJs booked on the tour to curtain raise before Tuku went on stage. I remember when I played True Love at the concert in Milton Keynes, Keith came over to me with a HUGE grin on his face and said, "I played the keyboard in this song." At the time I had no idea who he was and thought he was coming to tell me something about the sound levels. It then dawned on me he was the white guy who played in Ilanga when I was kid in Zim as he had the accent from home! Up until I played that song, Keith was busy being professional doing his sound thing so hadn't spoken to him during the tour. All that time I just thought maybe he was one of the Brit engineers they had hired for the tour to do the sound. That was the time I meet Keith.

Thank you for documenting these great musicians. Your documentaries give a voice to people whose stories are rarely celebrated. Well done for that.

Don Gumbo moved to South Africa where he met up with his mates school boy mate the late Lucky Dube and others but he maintained and kept the name of his band Ilanga in South African but after a time I only heard he passed on what he died from or took his life I don’t know but it was a great loss and a big blow to the music world , he was a great sound gentleman Don was.

Keith didn’t “collaborate” with Chiwoniso on Rebel Woman but he actually produced the whole album.

These dudes moved further to Harare where it was a bigger environment on the music scene and formed Ilanga then and I had a chance to meet up with Don and Andy when they where playing at Shamwari Hotel in kwe kwe in 1983 late November I used to be a DJ for a top disc jockey then in kwe kwe . That was Ilanga they played the best for it was the team again Andy Brown Don Gumbo and Crd Chinx Kieth and the rest of the gang I did have a chat with the dudes then fir they where like elder brothers to me and they where happy for I was a DJ then back in the day.

In those days in gweru you had a band as well called groove I still remember the lead guitarist Stanford and Elton he use to blow the saxophone the trumpet was a slim dude he joined Thomas Mapfumo but talking about GWERU it was the talk to cities then in the 1980s for bands used to come in and out , that’s how the great Don Gumbo and Andy and David the drummer came together

  • @anthonybrown1936

ILanga united extremely talented individuals and much as we'd love such to remain unified chances will be they will split. For me Silver n Gold..Tshisalanga and Shosholoza are iLangas timeless greatest. And Andy Brown's Spirit and his contribution on Chiwonisos Ancient Voices is what hurts most about such lost talent. Big up to sis Busi. Respect for Cde Chinx. And again for me the most uncelebrated total genius is Keith. He never seemed to clamor for limelight but true heart of a servant he masterfully contributed to these and various others. The best of Tukus songs for me are found where he served. I pray he also finds full satisfaction and pride in being probably one of most influential music persons to have matured zimbabwe music to international level.
To the Browns....your parents it's like zimbabwe does not have enough words to appreciate what they gave.
