In the whole video you might have been telling about learning new shapes. But there is a better way of doing it ! I accidentally discovered that it's just a different scale note substituted in the e minor scale. Kinda modal interchange hah. But if you just memorise where that weird note is located every part of the neck by octave rules, whole story gets much simpler. And then if you know the e minor scale all over the fretboard the notes automatically flashes . In this way I ended up discovering several patterns. Also playing one string at a time helps to cover the fretboard, combined with other strings. I already knew the patterns, but the soloing technique really helped me.😊

@Signals Music Studio Kudos for the Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried - Rozardner Inspiring Chord Reality (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great one off guide for how to play guitar scales minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my close friend Aubrey got cool success with it.

The scale of insanity, you should hear what I can write with it. Metal as fuck. But I wouldn't improvise with it.

Yep, while Jake may not be anyones impression of the rock god, he certainly knows how to teach in a well organized and easy to understand manner. He's half my age and has more musical knowledge than I will ever know, but what I take from him is always additive, beneficial, and makes me a better player even if it's just a single note that I may add to a scale I already used.

You're right about players and what/how they play....no one can actually think that fast on the fly, so yes, it's a combination of practiced runs, timing for chord changes, and the ear to know when to 'stretch' your limits out to the edge. I totally get players who go into a studio, lay down a track, and than actually have to go and practice it to do it live, even though they ripped it a sonic speed on the record. If you improvise and you're good, that will be the result.

Great lessons bro. No one has such comprehensive teachings in such a short amount of time. I am 33 years old and have been playing since I was 12 years old. I started out just playing 80s punk and then would go years without playing and get back into it. Then I started listening to prog rock and wanted to become a guitar virtuoso so I started trying to teach myself theory. This is really the best time to teach yourself guitar. When I started out all they had were books and dvds if you wanted to self teach. Now with youtube it's crazy. You clearly have a gift for captivating an audience and teaching. Thanks for the vids.

This is very helpful. Your improv prep is a good idea, where it ends on the tonic, or a "target note." My guitar mentor has encouraged me to find as many paths to the target note as possible, including string skipping, chromatic boxing, or diatonic boxing.

Thanks, Jake! I've broken away from Harmonic Minor about 25 years ago, because of overuse by everyone else and myself, sticking mostly with Aeolian Natural Minor.

I feel like you should have mentioned that the "idea" behind this scale is to add a leading tone to the scale, like we would have in a major scale. But since the melodic minor is highly related to harmonic minor, I have this strange feeling that you will talk about that in the lesson of the melodic minor. :D Besides that: Yup, harmonic minor is the best scale!

    • @SignalsMusicStudio

It's funny how many times I told myself in preparation for this video to mention that at least once and still forgot! The next video will include a lot more info on that 7th and how/when it has to be played around when juggling minor vs harmonic minor.

Malmsteen = Harmonic Minor and its Phrygian Dominant mode joined together with diminished arpeggio runs that come out of the Harmonic Minor scale. So in A Harmonic Minor you can run diminished arpeggios off the the G#, the F the D and the B notes (it's all the same notes anyway), and then get yourself to E Phrygian Dominant and go back again. You can map the whole fretboard that way and play up and down all day.

I don't play guitar (ukulele, don't judge!) but I mostly compose electronic music using hardware and I find your tutorials so well explained that I can apply them to my electronic music production. I use harmonic minor a lot because it sounds a bit exotic, although not as exotic as on gutiar. Thank you for your excellent teaching.

  • @kimmelsadat4343

Music theory is blowing my mind! I started playing guitar a few months back and would spend most of my “practice time” just messing around the fret board trying to get my fingers accustomed to playing. One day I literally stumbled upon part of a middle eastern sounding scale. I played notes around it until I found these exact notes and now I know what it’s called! I wish I would have gotten into music earlier but this newly found inspiration is awesome regardless of that. Subbed and waiting for more mind blowing musical epiphanies! Great work bro!

Thanks Jake. It's funny how hard I've studied all the different modes and scales and really struggled to 'visualise' them as separate characters so speak. The one guitarist I've heard improvise a solo where I know that way over 10% is true improvisation is Guthrie Govan. If you listen when he's improvising, he comes up with an idea like that little run you showed us and then he fully explores that idea- adapting it a hundred different ways, until he runs across a new idea and- then he takes off on it. And these are long legato runs- not little 4-5 note phrases he's playing. He reminds me of Randy Rhodes- which should be enough said if you know who Randy is. He never gets lost and his runs always end perfectly- right on time, resolving to the perfect note to match whatever chord is behind it. If it's a minor, the run resolves to the relevant flat 3rd- if t's major a perfect 5th, etc. And he seems to do so just by instinct- I don't think he has any formal training. Which is really impressive when you consider Randy not only had formal instruction, he taught classical guitar at the school his mother owned.

Said it before, will probably say it again and again, "Jake, you are so bright and pleasantly encouraging." How did you get that way? Boss parents, I would suspect. If this comment seems like a man-crush, it is, but very much a May-December kind of thing. I'm 70, been playing since the day after the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan. I always learn something helpful from your videos, even if they are on a subject I think I've got down. The only trouble with your lessons is that my lovely wife can tell when I'm learning from you. Out of the side of her ear (is that an expression?) she will listen, and when you say something like, "Just this one technique will allow you to noodle endlessly," she calls out, "Oh, Dear Lord, no -- don't encourage him to noodle any more than he already does!" I think my noodling is top-notch (no sexual innuendo implied), but she disagrees. And now, thanks to you and the Chuss backing track, let the noodling begin!

Your videos are so cool that 10 min seem like 10 s. Good job!

Is it me or is everyone posting videos on harmonic minor? This one, Music is Win, Rick Beato, and Ross Campbell's latest videos are about it. Maybe just an odd coincidence.
