    please teach all the other so called teachers on youtube this video..this was the most informative video i have seen on laying out stairs..hats off!!!

    So you are using a sub stringer for the main stringers? If so when you cut out the triangles out of the 2x10 your left with 3" of wood to hold all of the weight of the entire stair case. The longer the stringer the weaker the stair case becomes and will break that 3" of wood. The cut out stringers are meant for the center of the stair case and are to be attached to the left and right 2x10 solid stringers. The solid stringers also hide the endgrain of all the treads and risers.

      For metal stringers the math is the same - same unit run and unit rise and same reductions.
