I like your idea, I have used this suction method for some time now. In addition to pulling out the old oil, when I get done I slip the oily hose end in a bottle of soapy water mixture for a few seconds and it cleans the entire hose. No oily drippy mess after the oil change.
This is great!!! im 100% using this for my mom's jeep wrangler, its transmission doesn't have a drain plug and no dipstick hole.... And gonna do my sister's brake fluid as well this weekend!!! gonna try this out 🤘

I've been doing small engine repair for over 35 year and never would of thought of this. The older equipment had drian plugs but alot of these new mowers and especially generators don't have drain plugs. They say about to tip the equipment over to drain the oil, we that's just a mess in most cases. I will be trying this very soon. Great video thanks
I am “blown” away by this!!! There really are simpler ways to do difficult things. When I change the oil on my riding mower it’s a TOTAL MESS. I am going to be doing this!!!!!
Worked like a charm. Put a gallon jug in a shop vac and stuck the hose in it. Not one drop of oil spilled anywhere. Thank You for sharing this. Just a tip. When done, stick the 1/4" poly pipe into the other end of the 1/4 inch vinyl tubing to prevent any dripping while storing.
THANK YOU, CHRIS! This video is fantastic! I just made one of these systems for less than $5 and it worked great. Normally changing the oil on my lawn mower is a giant, messy PITA. I was able to change the oil on my mower today with zero mess this time . What a genius invention! I wish I could like this video multiple times. Great job, sir! 👍🏼
You are a genius! Figuring out that inside the vacuum the pressure is constant and does not compress the bottle was impressive! I have a huge problem with the oil-draining plugs in my riding lawn mower. Now, I will be able to even change my transmission oil without any trouble. Thank you for sharing your wisdom amigo.
Awesome Idea. I recently made one by substituting a 90w oil bottle top for the 2 Liter soda bottle top. No drill required, just a razor knife. Worked flawlessly. Thanks for the video
Thank you Chris! I couldn't remove the square drain plug from my riding mower oil drain hose. The drain hose is great to have if you could get some leverage applied to loosen the plug 😮!! Anyway, this is such a great idea, easy to make, and it worked perfectly. I was able to use a full 10 ft of tubing (I wasn't sure I'd have enough with 6ft) and I had a bit longer on the more rigid tubing too. My deWalt shop vac filter is centered in the container but I could still fit in a washer fluid bottle for collection because the container is flexible enough to dent in and then recover after removed. Perfect solution!! No mess!!! Reusable!!! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and skills and for all the quality videos.
Wow. I’ve seen kits over the years, with vacuum and attachments. Most everyone has a shop vacuum of some sort and an empty 2L. I actually have a spare vac. because I upgraded. Now I have dedicated syphon/vacuum. So simple. Awesome!! Thank you
Thank you for sharing!! I hate to think of the number of years I didn't change the oil in my mowers, tillers, generators because I didn't want the oily mess and the gasoline running out of the carburetor trying to get all the old oil out of the engine. This device should be hanging on the end cap in the small engine section of every retailer.
Only downside is that if you’re having to suck out large amounts of oil, you can’t keep track of how much you’re sucking out at a time without having to stop and open the shop vac.
Awesome!! I have a lawn care business and have been tipping my push mower over to drain the oil into a pan for 25 years such a messy pain in the ass.thank you
Wow even better than the last one! I just showed my dad this video. He’s just getting ready to do oil changes on all his power equipment so he was pretty glad to see this clean solution to a messy job.
Just helped changed the oil in all my dads mowers. Stupid easy! We didn’t have a pop bottle but a piece of 1/4” plywood and duct tape worked just as well. Only issue I had was I put the hose a little too far into the container inside the vac and a little bubbled over even though it didn’t over fill. Tiny spill contained in the shop vas is not a big deal compared to the alternative. Plus now I know better so next time will be mess free😁
The original version was already great but this version is a lot better. The oil goes directly into the disposal container. One less opportunity for a messy spill. Thank you Chris.
You dont need or want a filter in your vac for oil suctioning. Thus most containers work. Genius plan here! Since I have 3 or 4 old and moldy shop vacs sitting around, I just dedicate one to oil suction full time.
This was awesome. I followed your video after stripping out my mower's drain plug trying to remove it. Worked like a charm! I'll do this every time now.
This is my annual Chris Notap appreciation message. I made this last year and just used it again this year. It is the fastest and cleanest way to change my lawn mower oil. This is a genius contraption and I still love it. Thanks again, Chris! 👍🏼
I made one as well for emptying my windshield washer reservoir of summer washer fluid for the winter -40 F . Does a great job for those of us who live in the colder climates
I desperately needed to change my diff fluid. The drain plugs might as well be decoration. Found this video, and ran out to the hardware store. This worked perfectly for getting all the gunky diff oil out Thank you Chris
Very clever and cheap invention. Thank you for sharing! A little thought: liquids don't like to flow through long narrow tubes. The shorter and wider the tube, the quicker the flow.

Couple months ago I changed oil for the first time, I had to tilt the mower to one side to get the oil out (per instruction manual), by doing so I flooded the carburetor and the headache of taking it apart to fix the issue! Now this is the way to simplify the task! Thank you.
@@chad7585 You do not get the crap out from the bottom of the crankcase/oil pan like you do when using the oil plug on a motor with a plug/pan or small engines that say to tip on side to drain out the fill spout! use your head and think about it! Lol
wonderful DIY... thank you. While it won't fit in most shop vacs, kitty litter can be purchased in fairly heavy gauge plastic bottles which might work OK. Going yo have to play with this super useful tool. We full-time in our 38' RV. That means as many as 2-3 generator oil changes a week and spills just happen. Your tool is fantastic for my use. Again THANK YOU..
Great idea. Trying to remove oil from a lawn mower is one of thee most annoying and messy jobs Ive had to do. Great method and well explained. Thank you!
3636lk Should do it now. The combustion causes oil to be corrosive so having it sit in there isn’t ideal. Maybe the cold makes it relatively insignificant. Get er done sometime anyway
This worked perfect!! I have a rigid shopvac and couldn't use the 2 liter as it didn't match up with the opening, but I used a Gatorade single serve and cut it at the top indentation and used a 5/16 drill bit and angled it around a little to make the opening large enough (I don't have an 11/32 bit). I used an empty narrow container of vegetable oil inside the shop vac. It took about 2 minutes to get all the dirty oil out of my mower! I will use this contraption to change my snow blower oil too. No mess involved and It cost about $4 for the tubing, thank you so much!!!
It is simple but brilliant. I think you can market it as a new idea in improvement and sell the product in masses. You do it before someone else steals your idea.
Wow, what a great idea. I think that I am going to try this down the dipstick for my truck transmission. I like to change the transmission oil often but find it a pain to drop the pan each time. I dont really think the filter need to be changed but for every 30,000 miles and I like to change the oil every 10,000. That is about 2 Years for me as I really only use it haul stuff and tow the boat. And when done, I will know exactly how much to put back in.
This is a brilliant idea! Changing the oil in my generator the old way makes a terrible mess of the generator and whatever spot I do it in. I end up not changing the oil as often as I should - very dangerous since I have to rely on that generator. Thanks muchly for the tip!
Exactly! The easier & cleaner the process the more often one will be tempted to do oil changes. Our new push mower doesn’t have a lower drain cap & my Troy Bilt wood chipper has them in inconvenient places. Hard to do means less apt to do it. This idea with the vacuum looks brilliant.
Hello señor Chris... what an excellent... brilliant idea you share with the world... wow !! I will put your idea to work to do maintenance in our lawn motor and whatever other situations where we can use your idea another success for science and technology ... awesome!!

I was contemplating buying a vacuum pump for changing the "top end" or "high pressure" oil in my 7.3 liter turbo-diesel engine. The high pressure oil system holds a total of about 3 quarts. After watching this video, I think I'm going to use my shop-vac. Thanks, @Chris Notap. This is a realy great tip.
Thank you so much for posting this video, I've been trying to figure out how to change the oil in my Lawnmower and Generator, and made a huge mess everywhere, but My Good Sir made life 100 times easier, and I couldn't be happier with your tutorial. Awesome 🤪🤙
Great video. Worked perfectly for draining oil from my riding mower. The drain plug is impossible to get to remove. This was the perfect solution. Thanks!!!
After watching your last video I found a 5 gallon bucket with lid and drilled two holes, one (larger) for the hose from the vacuum and a smaller hose for the liquid transfer. Thanks for the tip Chris!
Finally a way I can change the gear oil in my Lathe. They have drain plugs but more often than not it just spills and makes a mess on the shop floor thanks!
Wanted to buy the oil extractor and a shop vac this year but I am very conservative when it comes to money spending. Now I know what I’ll buy considering that it will get WAY more uses then just sucking oils out. Brilliant stuff and instant like and subscribe.
Thank you for reminding people to warm the engine prior to suctioning out the oil. It not only warms the oil but it mixes and suspends carbon and dirt so you start with a cleaner oil reservoir. Good video
Thanks Chris, I used the updated design and it worked perfect. Changed the oil quickly and easily on both my mower and power washer very quickly with no oily mess.
Very clever! Even when the lawn mowers came with a drain plug it was still messy. There isn't any room like there is under a car to remove the drain plug and place the drain pan underneath without making a huge mess. I finally changed the oil on my Honda lawnmower last evening. But first I emptied the gas tank by tipping the mower on that side into a clean container. The last time I changed the oil with less than a half a tank of gas it spilled out and made a mess. I didn't realize how much gas my lawnmower holds it was quite a bit. Then I lifted the other side of the lawnmower onto the drain pan. I removed the dipstick and tilted the mower over. I tried to tip the mower over fast enough so it wouldn't spill on the blade housing but I wasn't that fast. Nearly all of the oil poured into the drain pan. I just mowed the front and back yard so the mower was hot and so was the oil. It took less than 15 seconds to drain. I added 12oz of 10w30 oil and were back in business.
Brilliant idea. I love it and will be using it on my next oil change of my pressure washer. I am a retired plumber and would have been able to use this system quite often. Thank you for another great idea and solution to everyday life.
Well that was genius, I'm going to try this always wondered how to get oil out mower with no drain plug like the one I have. Thumbs up my friend to this invention 😊
You win!! Awesome my man. So fing good. Thank you. A wiper fluid bottle fit perfectly in my 30 year old Shop Vac. Sucked the gear oil out of my rear diff like a champ.
Clever. Wish you had posted the failure of using the large container in the first video. But how can you learn stuff if you don't try it for yourself. Will now have to build another to go inside the vac. Much simpler. Thanks!
Great idea! In fact the only idea I've seen that's better is switching all of my OPE to battery powered electric. Now I don't mess with any of this and all my equipment starts quietly with the push of a button. With no gas or oil to buy and change and refill, there is practically zero maintenance on all of my equipment.
I tried the original version and my container completely flattened. I wondered, what am I doing wrong. I need to watch the video again. I like the idea of putting the container in the shop vac. Although I have not tried it yet, it should solve the problem. Also realized the value in warmed up oil. Cold, that stuff is very viscus. Great idea. I just need to use the right TOOLS. :)
Same here, seems like the cost cuting measures are kicking in and the manufacturers dont even count on that their product will even survive long enough to get an oil change.
Another guy tries to do this with a vacuum cleaner, it’s on TH-cam. Does not work like this. Thank you so much for sharing!! I will be changing oils, diff oils and anything else that needs to be changed!
Ingenious method of draining difficult tanks. Thanks for the ideas. It's actually easier on a vacuum motor to run with the hose restricted because it's turning in a partial vacuum and doesn't have to push air. Pushing the air is a load on the motor. When the flow is restricted the motor runs at a higher speed because of the lower load , and you can hear it in the sound pitch it makes.
You could also use a small funnel instead of the soda bottle. No need to cut or drill holes, just feed the vinyl tube through a funnel that is snug enough, the taper of the funnel also helps seal it against the shop vac.
I think you're very clever putting the container inside the vacuum - that's genius. I'm gonna be doing this to my new Honda Mower that doesn't have a drain plug. They actually expect me to tip a very heavy, $1500 mower on it's side Many thanks.....all the way from London !
I have been using the same principle recently but on a much larger scale (205L / 44 Gal) drum, but did not think outside the square how this could be scaled 'down'. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Well made vid as well.
You are a genius! Thanks for the awesome tip. I used an old plastic funnel instead of the 2L Pop Bottle. Just use correct diameter tubing and pull appropriate length of tubing through the hole.
What a great idea! I've used my shop vac for clearing clogged drains; I'm just going to have to start thinking outside the box for all the other possibilities like you did with this. Thanks for sharing!

After watching your last video I found a 5 gallon bucket with lid and drilled two holes, one (larger) for the hose from the vacuum and a smaller hose for the liquid transfer. Thanks for the tip Chris!
Great minds think alike! I have made the same! Watch for the video coming soon.
Finally a way I can change the gear oil in my Lathe. They have drain plugs but more often than not it just spills and makes a mess on the shop floor
thanks!
Sparkie Kosten Good call, I didn’t even think about that. Thank YOU!
That's quite the improvement on your original design. Thanks so much for creating this video.
I bought the ingredients this morning LOL
The only thing I can suggest is placing a vacuum boot over each end of the tubing when coiled up for storage. I really enjoyed this vid.
Plugging the hose for storage is a good idea, but what is a vacuum boot?
Wanted to buy the oil extractor and a shop vac this year but I am very conservative when it comes to money spending. Now I know what I’ll buy considering that it will get WAY more uses then just sucking oils out. Brilliant stuff and instant like and subscribe.
Thanks and welcome!!
What an awesome idea man!! Can’t wait to try this on all my power equipment! PURE GENIUS!
Thank you for reminding people to warm the engine prior to suctioning out the oil. It not only warms the oil but it mixes and suspends carbon and dirt so you start with a cleaner oil reservoir. Good video
Awesome! Your first version was a great at idea and this one just added to the idea much more convenient. Thanks.
Thanks Chris, I used the updated design and it worked perfect. Changed the oil quickly and easily on both my mower and power washer very quickly with no oily mess.
Great to hear!
Damn, son. That’s genius. Gonna go make one now and get the oil/rain water mix out of my small compressor!
You're a great instructor! I really appreciate your clear explanations! Thanks!
The decision of mower companies to not put oil drain plugs on their mowers was idiotic. Who was the Einstein that made that decision?
Genius!! A one gallon milk container fits inside my shop-vac. That is the container I use to take my old oil to Walmart for disposal. Beautiful!
Perfect
Going to be honest, when you put the bottle in the shop vac, I thought he is going to make a huge mess. Wow was I wrong. Genius!
Wow really a simple invention but very practical! Thanks for sharing.
brilliant!
I have a generator that makes a HUGE mess changing the oil. It doesn't have a drain plug.
Thanks Chris. This will make changing the oil on my push mower a snap.
Make sure to not miss the message at 0:30!!
You could also use a small funnel instead of the soda bottle. No need to cut or drill holes, just feed the vinyl tube through a funnel that is snug enough, the taper of the funnel also helps seal it against the shop vac.
I picked a pop bottle since they are so abundant and no money involved to acquire. Just check re-cycle bins on garbage day.
I think you're very clever putting the container inside the vacuum - that's genius.
I'm gonna be doing this to my new Honda Mower that doesn't have a drain plug.
They actually expect me to tip a very heavy, $1500 mower on it's side
Many thanks.....all the way from London !
I learn something new by watching your videos thks
I have been using the same principle recently but on a much larger scale (205L / 44 Gal) drum, but did not think outside the square how this could be scaled 'down'. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Well made vid as well.
I always prefer to use gravity to drain oil and residue vs suction, but, this approach is literally genius.
You are a genius! Thanks for the awesome tip. I used an old plastic funnel instead of the 2L Pop Bottle. Just use correct diameter tubing and pull appropriate length of tubing through the hole.
I'll be using this to change my differential oil!
Adrian Hdz get a stiff pipe (my gf insists) if you’re going to try even warm 90W
This is amazing the time saved in a few oil changes will literally pay for the time needed to make this.
Less is more. Love your elegant solutions.
Thank you! I've been using one of those siphon things. More trouble than it's worth. This is genius!
Welcome to 2020!! Happy New Year!
Simply genius idea. I love it. Brilliant video as usual thanks for sharing this. 😅😅😅
Thanks!
What a great idea! I've used my shop vac for clearing clogged drains; I'm just going to have to start thinking outside the box for all the other possibilities like you did with this. Thanks for sharing!
