Indepth look into Renault Kwid perfomance in 2023 - Can you do long distance in it?

  • This is my first whole week of experience behind the wheel of the Renault Kwid and I thought I should share my first reactions with you.
    This is the Top Spec Renault Kwid Climber powered by a 1.0L normally aspirated engine good for 50kw and 91nm. It does not weigh much, so those figures are not as low as they seem for a City Run Around like this one.
    It retails for around R202 000 for Manual and R212 000 for Automatic transmission.

    It's called a "budget car" for a reason I don't understand why people are actually expecting a lot from a cheap car , I'd rather get this than get into the second hand segment because eish second hand cars sometimes can show you flames

      Very true Molife. I raised that in the review that I have to remind myself that this is a budget car. However, I'd still go for some second hand cars priced the same as this at around R200K if I need one for long distances as well.

      Even for a budget car, it is a disgrace, here in Brazil they go for the "budget" price of 60k, its underpowered, has terrible highway performance, interior is cramped, horribly finished with poorly fitted parts, has a lot of external noise when driving.... The og VW beetle and the Fiat Panda were real budget cars, the Kwid is a scam wrongfully marketed as a "compact SUV" who uses "but its a budget car" as an excuse to poor built quality...
      Previous cars that fulfilled the role of budget cars such as og VW beetle, Fiat Panda, Celta, VW Gol, were cheap, reliable, easy to maintain, overall good cars, and still retained some style lol
      The Kwid is hardly cheap, well, it is the cheapest available, but 60k for that? Really..? Its also nowhere as reliable as the models I mentioned above and boy is it ugly lmao

    I have the Dynamic version, bought it brand new in December 2019, so far I've done 280k km with it. The engine is stronger than i expected. During lock down i used to drive it to east london everyday from Port Elizabeth ( Gqeberha), Those were some of the most thrilling drives, exactly how you described it.

    I've driven it in Kenya since mid 2022. It's definitely a city car but for its price range I have no complaints. It's important to first manage your expectations. This is not a Toyota. You will not enjoy the comfortable driving you're used to ... However, if you get into an accident, you'd rather be in a Kwid rather than an equivalent Toyota. I know this from experience. It's built with a roll cage. Don't be in a hurry on long journeys. The engine is powerful on the AMT but it takes a while to pick up. The rear wheel drive is built like a light pick up so you either need weight in the back or wider rear tires. However this small car has gotten me out of situations where Rav4s and other small SUVs had to turn back. So far it's been worth every shilling. What I really like most is that it looks nice. It's always a conversation starter.

    • @sebuwam
      @sebuwam  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I guess the weight counts when it comes to getting out of those sticky situations. It's winning looking at how it sells here in SA but yoh, what an experience to be in it😅

      @@sebuwam ha ha ha. To understand this car you need to realize you're on a 1000cc motorbike with a roof. It's small and nimble. It can weave through tight spaces at high speeds. There's a thrill to accelerating it because you can feel the engine and the drive shaft. So people are not trying to prove its speed. It's just that after the rough initiation at the beginning because we're used to soft japanese cushions, you really come to enjoy driving a Kwid. It's back to basics driving.

    • @sebuwam
      @sebuwam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hehe, they can all do that with any budget car but you just need to know their limits. It's going to be very difficult though from Machadodorp toll all the way to Hazeyview. You will actually get there feeling very tired because you will be at work. If comfort counts, for R200K, as a person who does long distance like that frequently, a demo Swift might be a good choice. Awesome update.
    I use to have an i10 previous gens and Mann it was tiring doing long distance but shockingly it could easily do like 165kmh so I’m shocked this is battling. Mind you mind was also a one litre😂
    This is a city car period.
    I’ve seen a few people doing long distance between Cape Town and Jhb but they doing like 100kmh🥴😅
    However here is the issue…for R200k new it’s a good proposition but why not save some cash and get yourself rather a slightly used Clio if you like the brand or even used Suzuki swift 💎
    Unfortunately in SA we like affordable but we forgetting that affordable means cutting cost so you can’t have everything 😮
    Personally if you stay in the city perfect for old folks moving around and students and or city lovers but if you want to venture into open road you need more power and little more speed so 1.2 and above 🙏🥲
    Keep the reviews pushing

    • @vincentmothapa2421

      I was also pleasantly surprised by the older i10. It could maintain highway speeds uphill in 4th gear with 3 passengers in the car and no luggage, granted it was the 1.2 engine. It could also do unthinkable things on the roads if you felt like it.
      Lastly, looking at new car prices, I don't think I'm the target market for new cars lol. My current polo vivo is a 2016 with 130k km that I got for just over R100k. I'm very happy and don't get chest pains every time the debit order hits

    • @sebuwam
      @sebuwam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The previous gen i10 is solid, I remember doing long distance in the i10 grand with 3 other adults in the car back in 2015 and the thing felt well balanced and did not feel as small inside. Since the market went bad, they cut a lot of things from the generation you are referring to, basically, more of a shell that looks similar but with less quality in some materials to reduce the costs. The Germans with the Audi also did this, especially at A3 level. I'd say the Clio is just a solid vehicle and you have more comfort and safety in it, the only downside is when someone is really looking for a brand new car. I seriously found it to be alright in the City, I think that's were it belongs. Thanks a lot my brother, Ozem, you know we still have things to look at, when you ready we will get to work.😊

    • @sebuwam
      @sebuwam  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vincentmothapa2421 Hehe, as I was saying to Ozem about the previous i10s including the quality. Totally different to current entry level cars. With the price of the Vivo back then (2015-16) you had so much to choose from. If one had R150K they could get a solid car, I got a Fiesta with 17800km on the clock for R150K in 2015 and never found myself on the side of the road. That era made us to hate current cars as we used to get quality "first cars" for low price. Our economy got a serious beating from there yoh😮‍💨
