One of my favourite memories from high school is curling up on the couch with my crush, an avid LotR fan who had never seen the extended editions. We went through Fellowship together, and it was utterly delightful to watch them perk up and go "That's new!" at even the tiniest thing.
Mal: "Let's watch the extended cut. It's only a couple minutes longer" Little did she now Stephen has the power to EXTEND the Extended cut for lore explanation 😂😂
A group of friends and I took a day and a half to watch all of the Lord of the Rings movies. We rented a space on our university’s campus, brought in mattresses, blankets, snacks and the lot. Was wild and exhausting.
Actually if I remember correctly, you guys watched the first Hobbit film in theater. However, you watched the second film at 4 am, so that you could watch the third in theaters with Jeremy that night. Yeah I checked there’s two vlogs from 2014 titled “Early Morning Hobbit Film” and “Late Night Hobbit Film”. Then there’s one from 2012 titled “Hobbit in 48fps review” in which you watched the Hobbit in theaters with Thomas.
When Stephen said "Uhhh... Yeah sure what the heck." to Mal asking if they were going to watch the extended version, I knew what the reaction was going to be when he cut to after the movie. I've watched mainly the extended editions of the movies (totally worth it in my opinion) Including doing the super crazy thing of my sisters and I at one point doing an entire marathon of all three LotR extended movies in one day. So to say that this was hilarious to hear about and all from someone whose never really seen the movie (or doesn't remember it) and them being subjected to the extended editions was hilarious. Extended edition, always better. Especially if the movies are based off of books. Since things from the books get cut from most theatrically versions of books to movies, and they were able to add in more moments because of it. My sister in high school once watched the Fellowship of the Ring in class, but it was the normal version, not extended, and she was sad cause she kept expecting things to happen that were only in the extended edition Also Stephen, your pronunciations of the names of Aragorn and Boromir was hilarious. And I could see how those names written out might be a bit strange if you read the books first, I knew how to pronounce the names only because of the fact that I watched the movies first. And the Hobbit Trilogy should not have been a trilogy, they stretched out stuff waaaaaaay too much for it, considering the fact that it was a small book, LotR is better over all in general with pacing, I do have to agree. But also LotR each book could have been 2 movies if they wanted to include most everything from the books and all. Also, fun fact, one of the actors in the movies Christopher Lee (played Saruman) was the only actor who actually met J.R.R. Tolkien (and I think the only one involved in the films production who did)
LoTR is great on film. They skipped a bunch of weird stuff from the book. I love that Tolkien wrote all of it because he wanted to nerd out over languages he made up. Also, Tolkien was born in my home town and there is still a Tolkien House venue here.
As a self proclaimed successor to Tolkien w/ my fiction this is THE BEST take on Fellowship. I now aspire not to write an epic the likes of LotR, I just want to write the characters Tissle, Wissle, Eragon and Bjorn.
For the LOTR, Peter Jackson owned the film rights and did the movies his way. For the Hobbit movies, the film rights were jointly owned by MGM and Newline. He wanted to only make 2 normal length Hobbit movies, but the Studios forced him to make 3 longer ones. This meant that they had to find more story than what actually existed. The scene where everyone is running away from 2 stone giants fighting (which is 20 minutes of one of the movies) came from just one 3 line paragraph about the shape of the mountains in the dark!
The Lord of the Rings is one of the best movie trilogies ever made, IMO. I'm partial to the Two Towers, but most people I've talked to agree that Fellowship is the best film of the three (and Jackson has stated he's proudest of the work he did on that one). Edit: I'd love to know your thoughts on the soundtrack, as I think it's one of the best musically. Part of the reason The Two Towers is my favorite movie is because of the Rohan theme.
This vlog was entertaining to watch. Lord of the Rings is my brother's favorite movies of all time so I've seen it many times. I've never actually seen the theatrical version only extended and from what I've read about the key differences it seems to be worth it especially in the third movie.
I watched the trilogy for the first time on New Year's weekend with my husband. I liked the movies so much that I really want to read the books at some point this year. Also, I would actually die for Sam. He's my favorite character.
I've been waiting for this to come up. :D Glad you enjoyed it so much. I actually not only read the books, but the Silmarillion which is a collection of the background lore that's not meant to be in the actual story, but serves as background for it. Characters do make references to details from the Silmarillion in the movies. I actually have not seen the extended version either. Wouldn't mind it someday, just for the hell of it. :) Two Towers was probably my favorite of the 3, though understandably harder to place relatively speaking due to being in the middle of the story and the fact it ends in a VASTLY different spot than in the books. XD
The Lord of the Rings films are long but they’re awesome. I just watched the films not too long ago. Also, seeing Mal in the U-Haul box made me laugh 😂
Huge LoTR fan, read the book repeatedly and yearly tradition to watch the movies, and would be more then happy to wait for you to survive all the extended versions to here your overall impressions of the trilogy. Glad you enjoyed it though and thank you Mal for playing translator it can be a lot for someone who's not as into the series ❤
Fun fact: Ian McKellen (Gandalf) based his character’s voice/speech off of JR Tolkien himself! And I agree with Mal, it does suit the character well. LOTR is such an amazing trilogy! I hope you both enjoy the next two films!
Huge congrats on catching up the vlog! The LOTR trilogy was a big part of my childhood, and I remember we went to see The Return of the King in theatres- and that was an almost magical experience. I really like this series but like Mal, Two Towers is the least memorable one for me. All I can think is "oh that one Gandalf scene/line that became a meme" and "there were walking and talking trees" 😂
Super glad you guys got the 4k copy of the film, its the first time since it came out in theaters that the color grading is correct. On DVD and BD the movie is suuuper green
STEPHEN, I don't know if we're in the same wavelength or something but on Friday I felt like ordering The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books and it'll be arriving tomorrow! As soon as I saw this video pop up in my feed I JUMPED cause I was very excited to read the books and then THIS shows up! Seriously WHAT ARE THE ODDS!! Also heck yeah need more Wii Sports content 😂😂
I remember how I once watched Spider-Man 2 with some friends, and we ended up watching the extended version. There was one really hilarious scene involving J. Jonah Jameson, but afterwards, I felt that the theatrical version was stronger, a better edited package, mostly due to some filler scenes that touch upon secondary details or how it changes the feel of scenes that were edited nicely in the theatrical movie (Mr. Aziz telling Peter "GOOO~~~~" before the pizza delivery or the awkward elevator scene). But for Lord of the Rings, it's a great journey watching the extended versions since you're further immersed in the journey and the world of Middle Earth. The extended versions for the next two movies are also really nice in that they present aspects of the big story that help further boost the characters (though the extended version of the third movie extends it by about an hour).
Okay, this is a bizarre coincidence. My boyfriend and I finished watching all the extended versions of The LotR and The Hobbit on the 30th of January. We started watching somewhere mid januari. Glad you enjoyed watching it and that Mal can explain extra stuff. I have my boyfriend for that, he read the books and has all the extra lore Tolkien wrote. Great entertainment. Excited to see/hear what you think of the other extended movies ^^
Lord of the Rings is literally my favourite movie franchise, I feel like the story is really solid(I read the books) and I loved the movies, but I am into anything fantasy and medieval lore. Also I personally like the extended edition of LotR better because if you have never read the books the extended cut gives a bit more lore and content from the book imho. Game of thrones is another fantastic medieval series the first 4 seasons especially are very solid.
So glad you enjoyed The Fellowship! I got into LotR thanks to my dad and thoroughly enjoyed both LotR and The Hobbit. Still have not read the entirety of the LotR books yet, but I have read The Hobbit. Looking forward to what you think of The Two Towers!
I get the feeling Tizzle and Wizzle will grow-zizzle on you if you watch the next two films. Also Beorn is the name of a character in the Hobbit, so you are going to confuse a lot of people if you don't learn Boromir's name... So please do not learn Borimir's name. XD
Peter Jackson kinda "start over the films" (I am no expert on filming so, take this with a grain of salt hahaha) to do the extended versions so, I guess that helped with the pace which is really cool!!! This 3 films are def on my favourite list and I am glad you enjoyed them too!! 😍 I am also the kind of person that could explain to you the lore hahahaha, I didn't know I shared that with Mal and I am super happy now ☺
Glad you watched the extended cut and had Mal to explain. Yes the LOTR films are much better and more faithful than the Hobbit films, though it's cool you remembered something from seeing those (this may also be why you kept calling Boromir 'Bjorn', Beorn the shape-shifter is a character in those). Also (no spoilers) by remembering the trees from Two Towers, you had a better understanding of what Tolkien thought was important in that book than Peter Jackson seems to have had at times... Also, fun fact: these films are closer to being an adaptation of the BBC Radio Drama version from the 1980s than they are of the book - the whole intro flashback is borrowed from those, for instance.
The only time I've seen the LotR movies was during an extended edition movie marathon with friends. All of them together (cutting out ending credits) total about 11 hours. I don't remember much about the movies. It doesn't help that people didn't want to watch with subtitles and I was one of two (out of the group of 10) who hadn't seen the movies before so as you can imagine, people talked through most of the movies so I missed a lot of dialogue.
Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Tizzle, Wizzle, Eragon, Bjorn: The Fellship of the Ring This also comes to me right after seeing It Takes Two part 5 on Twitch where Stephen only knows Bilbo and Frodo as the same person
FlashtheFirefox 0 seconds ago I’ve seen bits and pieces of each of the original LOTR movies and over all it’s a great series, one day I’ll sit down and watch through them all the way; maybe not all at once though… not sure when I’d have time. Side note I have watch all the way through the first Hobbit movie and really liked it< I have also read the Hobbit book and really enjoyed it, though it’s been a long time since I’ve read it. Bro the extended versions are definitely the way to go if you want the best and fullest context in movie form. That said, you don't absolutely need to watch the extended versions, the theatrical releases are perfectly fine, but as a pretty decent LOTR lore fan, I will 100% encourage you to watch the extended trilogy if you have the time to commit to it. That said, it is a heavy time investment. My best advice: Get lots of snacks and some drinks!
Stephen: "Theatrical versions of movies are generally better." Me: This man has obviously not seen Blade Runner. (Also, didn't Stephen mention Blade Runner in a recent vlog, or am I dreaming?)
@@seriouskano2 Sort of reminds me of abridged and unabridged versions of books. Take Moby Dick for example. If you want to get a job in the whaling industry, then read the unabridged version. It seems to tell you ALL you need to know about whaling. Also, it would be useful if your mom or dad tells you to do something, say :"Okay! After I finish this book!"
Yes Mal!! I just recently refound my love for these movies and forced my boyfriend to watch them lol, although watching this made me realize I /really/ need to read the books.. Also super glad you watched the extended, there's a Fandom joke that it's just 20 more minutes of walking but it's still worth it imo
I've seen the extended versions of LotR movies four times now. Honestly, can't do it again with people who can talk and laugh about it because they've already watched it. It's just such a huge time sink for something I did already.
This is absolutely a MAJOR commitment but it would be awesome if y’all watch the marvel movies. Definitely would take many many weeks but it’d still be cool to see a fresh reaction to the MCU
The one time someone put on this movie for me, it was at 10PM and we were already in bed. Yeah, that didn't work out.. occasionally a friend has brought up doing a movie marathon, but it never materializes.
I have always disliked the extended versions but also think new folks going in should watch the theatrical release. Extended imo is only for fans who just can't get enough. And I was young when I first saw this and had not read the books at that point... I think I just accepted being confused and rolled with it lol.
I've never seen the theatrical cuts, but from what I've gathered is that Fellowship is a lot better with the extended version, Two Towers is the worst of the three with extended, and RotK is hit or miss depending on what part.
Stephen: needs explanations of what's happening and Gandalf subs Me: Am I missing something? I've never had these problems and haven't read the books. Movies seemed plenty followable
Also, me and my friends were talking about these movies and I called them New Zealand propaganda because well it's true 😂 Also man this really is one of those weird coincidences cause I was just getting the books for fun and then I ended up talking about this world way more than i expected I would 😂
Okay final thing but I have this weird thing where I watched the LotR movies and read the Hobbit but not the reverse so definitely excited to re-read The Hobbit and read the LotR books for the first time and then eventually see the Hobbit movies.
the sentence “we’re watching fellowship extended TONIGHT” does NOT end well for anyone. any time I go to watch those extended cuts I know it’s gonna be a day of it. Were you not warned about the extended edition being painfully long?… oh sir I’m so sorry.
Stephen omg I get you aren’t a lore guy, but Tolkien is like….my favorite lore. Just imagine Elder Scrolls. Basically the Elder Scrolls is just a big Tolkien knockoff. As for complaints, like the way the plot seems to stop to go over details and characters, and the way it all feels “long winded” is very accurate to the books. So….they did what they could lol I would also agree that Two Towers is the most forgettable movie. It acts as a second act to set up the much bigger and better return of the king. The Fellowship movie also eats up like a third of the events that happen in Towers the book. Overall, imo it is the perfect film trilogy. It is just long enough that you can devote a day to watching and enjoying it without it eating up a whole weekend. Any plans to watch Harry Potter? It is such a defining part of the early 2000s culture so I’m always a little surprised that you don’t know anything about it.
One of my favourite memories from high school is curling up on the couch with my crush, an avid LotR fan who had never seen the extended editions. We went through Fellowship together, and it was utterly delightful to watch them perk up and go "That's new!" at even the tiniest thing.

The one time someone put on this movie for me, it was at 10PM and we were already in bed. Yeah, that didn't work out.. occasionally a friend has brought up doing a movie marathon, but it never materializes.
I was not expecting to hear French! My brain took a few seconds before going "hey, that's my native language"
Despite the fact that I have the same birthday as Tolkien, I have never watched any of the LOTR movies or read any of the books.
I have all three lord of the rings movies extended version
The correct answer for LOTR is ALWAYS the extended version!
Stephen: needs explanations of what's happening and Gandalf subs
Me: Am I missing something? I've never had these problems and haven't read the books. Movies seemed plenty followable
surprised u guys havent seen lotr. though you havent seen star wars until “recently” so no real shock lol
I watch everything with subtitles because apparently actors can't do the thing they are paid to do which is talk clearly.
Pizza 👀
the sentence “we’re watching fellowship extended TONIGHT” does NOT end well for anyone. any time I go to watch those extended cuts I know it’s gonna be a day of it.
Were you not warned about the extended edition being painfully long?… oh sir I’m so sorry.
Stephen omg
I get you aren’t a lore guy, but Tolkien is like….my favorite lore.
Just imagine Elder Scrolls. Basically the Elder Scrolls is just a big Tolkien knockoff.
As for complaints, like the way the plot seems to stop to go over details and characters, and the way it all feels “long winded” is very accurate to the books. So….they did what they could lol
I would also agree that Two Towers is the most forgettable movie.
