While the owl was entirely original to the movie, the Echidnas that were hunting Sonic at the start were being led by someone that was outright designed to resemble Pachacamac (Tikal's father) from Sonic Adventure. The person that designed him even confirmed it was intentional.
It's sad that the pandemic started not allowing for some countries to get it in theaters. I bet this movie would've been the best selling movie last year if the theaters remained open.

I don't think it would have been in the top 10 worldwide if 2020 had proceeded normally though, it's run was already beginning to wind down in North America just before the pandemic really hit the box office hard and had already released in most markets by then. The film did really well all things considered, and it arguably wasn't hit as hard as the two big films that came after (Invisible Man and Onward).
Me and my mom went to go see Detective Pikachu when it came out, my mom is someone who knows next to nothing about Pokémon and she enjoyed the movie and thought it was cute. I highly enjoyed it and seeing all the Pokémon made me feel like a little kid again. 😄
I remember watching it in theaters and at multiple points crying with sheer joy and nostalgia. I never played the Detective Pikachu game, but it was a great experience. I just want a pet Bulbasaur to protec and cuddle.
Also, I think it was the first time I've watched "photorealistic" representations of pokemon that wasn't just "holy shit, get it away from me" creepy, so I was very pleased with it 😂 very good movie in my opinion
I'm with Mal on this, the humans did their part to move the plot along but the one who shined the brightest is Sonic and that's all that counted. If they stuck on the humans too much, then there is a need to complain imo. Other than that, I loved the movie very much.

I didn't play Detective Pikachu either, so I wasn't sure about the movie, and I just wanna say, it's very good. They made live-action Pokémon happen beautifully. Hell, they- and I swear this isn't a spoiler, this is already something you could kinda tell from the trailers- they made a live-action Mr. Mime that not only is not nightmare fuel, but appears to have done wonders for the popularity of Mr. Mime as a species in the Pokémon community as a whole. They left me wanting more live-action Pokémon movies in the future. Definitely worth watching IMO.
I really liked how the Sega logo for the movie was made of clips from most, if not all, of Sega's IPs, including some of their absolutely obscure ones like Rhythm Thief.
Man, I can't believe it's been a year since I saw Sonic the Hedgehog in theatres. It was basically the last time me and my friends were able to hang out somewhere. And as a huge Sonic fan, this movie made me so happy with it's writing, direction and references. I can't wait for the second movie, which I pray I'll be able to see with my friends once more.
So Detective Pikachu is actually pretty good I recommend it. Just to let you know though it is basically and adaptation of the game that loosely follows its story so you don't need to know the game to watch the movie.

They have to because the original design for movie sonic was very bad and it was nightmare fued after the first trailer was released in April. Sega was mad about the design and they have delayed the movie to give the art team time and reshoot most of sences with new design in mind and they got one of sonic artist who been doing sonic related media including sonic mania.

The Sonic movie was the last movie I saw in theaters before the ‘Current Times’, now that’s not a bad thing cause I too was really impressed with how good and fun it was. Jim Carey was great and I loved all the nostalgic gifts thrown in there for true fans of the franchise. This and Detective Pikachu are great examples that video game movies can be done well 👍🏼
I'm glad you guys liked it. I was still apprehensive on whether or not I should check it out, and now I will be tomorrow night. On a side note, I thought Detective Pikachu was a great movie, but I'm not really the best judge for cinematic quality. My only real gripe with the film was that Mewtwo (not a spoiler, he was in the trailers) looked kinda funky in that art style compared to all the other Pokemon. I also didn't play the game but I thought it was a fun, pretty solid movie.

The "fish out of water" trope has been done a lot, so that framing for Sonic was kinda eh, but they made the most of it. I think the film would have been even greater if they took the Dect. Pikachu approach and just said, "this is the world, get over it" but I understand that can also alienate audiences too.
Mal, definitely make Stephen watch Wreck-It Ralph!! It's such a genuinely great film, and even better for video game fans with the thousands of references. I think he'll really love it.
As a Sonic fan, I liked the Sonic film because it felt like a grown up version of one of those 80s live action tie-in films that has only a nodding acquaintance with the source material, but gets the characters right. And like Stephen I've always liked Jim Carrey's films so that was great too. The backstory is made up for the film, but I've always felt the only 'real' Sonic backstory is the one in the old British novels and comics which the later games changed anyway, so whatever.

I haven’t seen Sonic, but Detective Pikachu is really good! Similar to what you said about Jim Carrey, Pikachu is played by Ryan Reynolds and it’s a perfect casting. A lot of elements just worked together really well, I recommend it!

Funny story there was this video on TH-cam that literally had the entire sonic movie on a video with a mostly full screen. I don’t remember the name but it was removed a few days after I seen it. I was going to watch it in theaters but the you know what happened last year.
I really liked it too. Sonic was how I see Sonic and Eggman wasnt exactly how I perceived Eggman but he fit a real world version. I like James Marsden in other stuff but I didnt even remember his name in this. His wife.... I dunno who she is. Hope the sequel is good. I would recommend Detective Pikachu, I enjoyed it more than Sonic and I also havent played the game. Its just a fun film about Pikachu.
Hey I watched sonic for the first time on Sunday too! I was impressed. It reminded me a lot of detective pikachu, where neither deserve an Oscar but both are a good time if you are familiar with the source material.
I haven't actually seen the film, but just from screenshots, I wonder if the owl in this movie is based off of Old Man Owl from Sonic The Hedgehog OVA? That one also had an owl and human characters, so maybe it was a callback to that?
I enjoyed the Sonic movie. Detective Pikachu is good too, and you don't need to have played the game. Though live action Mr Mime is something you'll probably want to unsee.

Yeah, this movie is cute! A little predictable, but it's a kids movie. Did a good job of branching the wide appeal/casual audience with fans, which most video game movies can't do. I hope you guys do watch Wreck-It Ralph, I love that film.
I hope one day you get to watch the Assassin's Creed movie. I am a firm believer that that movie is not horrible and definitely serviceable. Michael Fassbender really put some dedication into creating the movie. I feel it deserves a sequel to fix the complaints people have. They have a base to start with.
The Detective Pikachu movie is great went back and saw it two extra time in theaters!! You don’t have to know about the games to enjoy it either not just the detective pikachu game but like any Pokémon game. You can go in with zero knowledge and still have fun!
I've never seen the Sonic movie. It didn't look like something that interests me but at the end you mentioned Detective Pikachu. I absolutely love the movie but as a heads up it's honestly very different from the game's story. That's really the only problem I have with the movie but that's not really a problem.
Well it doesn't go seriously off the source material, plus I'm guessing a lot of people who watched Detective Pikachu didn't play the game in the first place and probably played Pokemon in general

I watched the Sonic movie last year when the pandemic had only just begun. It was amazing. Whoever says the movie is bad probably didn't even watch it.
I can explain that cause I was feeling the same way. This is certainly setting up for a sequel, so to introduce all this Sonic music to new people now would through them off and all over the place. I at least think it was best for them to do what they did and only use a little so that they can learn Sonic (hopefully go seek out his music on their own) and then insert TONS more Sonic music in the sequel.
I saw this movie on premiere night with friends and we definitely were annoying to be in a theater with because we were geeking at all of the references (especially Sanic)
Sonic was the only video game more I’ve seen and enjoyed, with the exception of detective pikachu because I wanted to see that one but didn’t get to. That being said, I’m hoping that the Uncharted movie and The Last of Us TV series are done well and will be enjoyable.
I enjoyed both the Detective PIkachu and Sonic the Hedgehog movies! They were both really good, especially considering how poor film adaption of video games usually are.
I'm gonna respectfully disagree on James Marsden not being good in Sonic. It's SO hard to act against something that isn't there, and from that perspective Marsden knocked it outta the park; it felt like both of the characters were in the same room the entire time. Marsden is heavily underrated as an actor and it's a shame really. Plus you kinda need a straight man in a film with eccentric characters like Eggman and Sonic and I thought the balance was nice. I was surprised by how good the film was tbf though; I'm looking forward to the sequel!
The Monster Hunter movie was certainly one that didn't meet the mark. However, there were a lot of moments that were basically love letters to the fans. For example, there were characters from the past four games that a lot of people would miss unless you played the games. Unfortunately, for every good scene, there was an equally bad one, which kinda stunk. Honestly, the first half of the movie could've been skipped and not a whole lot would've been changed.
I played Detective Pikachu and am a Sonic fan so when I watched bot movies my thoughts are, Sonic was a better film but not as an adaptation of the game's story it's a good movie that features Sonic, Detective Pikachu is not as good but it is far more faithful to the source material as an adaptation, so it comes down to a better film featuring a game character or a not as good film that actually adapts the game well to the big screen. Regardless Sonic was great.
I bought the movie the day it digitally released & i enjoyed it. It was nice i didn’t have to wait as long to see. (Too bad the reason it released digitally early was because of the pandemic. But again, nice that I didn’t have to wait long to see it)
I think one thing to always keep in mind for the Sonic Movie is that, this movie would have absolutely been horrible if Sonic and Video Game fans didn't speak out against the humanioid CGI thing that Sonic was before.
The line between Video Games and movies draws thinner and thinner by the second. A redesign with this movie and apparently a Day 1 Patch for Cats (2019).

Good Sonic was changed for better. Immagine if Metroid came out and until end. Most thought,knew a woman and turns out a man and Metroid was changed into something else.
I've never seen the Sonic movie, not even the second one. Frankly I've never been interested in it, as I'm not the biggest fan of Sonic. Detective Pikachu I did go see though, and it was really good from what I remembered.

The Sonic Movie to me was a (B-). I definitely laughed more than I groaned or facepalmed, however, there was still too much cringe to be higher than it is. Jim Carrey is a gem and a perfect cast for Dr. Robotink. As a Genesis and SA2 Battle fan, I enjoyed the film and was glad to have seen it in theaters. Looking forward to the sequel that will come in the "after times".

Yeah, movies that were adapted from other media is always a gamble.

When I went to see this movie by myself I walked out of it and got a call that I was had to go to a wake, which was a absurd tonal shift.

I ended up seeing in in Theaters, it was really good! I liked it
I've never been a big Sonic fan, but I enjoy some of the games. I was pleasantly surprised with the movie. It was fun and light hearted, and just overall a good time. It was the last movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic too, so I'm glad it was a good one.
On Detective Pikachu - I LOVED it. Granted, I am a huge Pokemon fan so a lot of my love came from just seeing the world on the big screen. I highly recommend it.

You'd be surprised! A lot of people will dislike and/or like food way more depending on how it looks. Imagine blue pizza, nobody wants that even if it tastes the same! You eat with you eyes, as they say.
Funny story there was this video on TH-cam that literally had the entire sonic movie on a video with a mostly full screen. I don’t remember the name but it was removed a few days after I seen it. I was going to watch it in theaters but the you know what happened last year.
I really liked it too. Sonic was how I see Sonic and Eggman wasnt exactly how I perceived Eggman but he fit a real world version. I like James Marsden in other stuff but I didnt even remember his name in this. His wife.... I dunno who she is. Hope the sequel is good.
I would recommend Detective Pikachu, I enjoyed it more than Sonic and I also havent played the game. Its just a fun film about Pikachu.

Hey I watched sonic for the first time on Sunday too! I was impressed. It reminded me a lot of detective pikachu, where neither deserve an Oscar but both are a good time if you are familiar with the source material.
I also still need to see the Sonic Movie as well.

I haven't actually seen the film, but just from screenshots, I wonder if the owl in this movie is based off of Old Man Owl from Sonic The Hedgehog OVA? That one also had an owl and human characters, so maybe it was a callback to that?

I really liked the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The second movie is scheduled to come out April 2022. I hope it will do just as well as the first one.

I enjoyed the Sonic movie. Detective Pikachu is good too, and you don't need to have played the game. Though live action Mr Mime is something you'll probably want to unsee.

Detective Pikachu is good, too. While I definitely preferred the game, I also acknowledge that adapting the game directly wouldn't work for a movie (and I'm also like the only person who played the game.)
Yeah, this movie is cute! A little predictable, but it's a kids movie. Did a good job of branching the wide appeal/casual audience with fans, which most video game movies can't do. I hope you guys do watch Wreck-It Ralph, I love that film.
I hope one day you get to watch the Assassin's Creed movie. I am a firm believer that that movie is not horrible and definitely serviceable. Michael Fassbender really put some dedication into creating the movie. I feel it deserves a sequel to fix the complaints people have. They have a base to start with.

Detective Pikachu is a pretty good movie, lot's of details and stuff that fans will enjoy. :)
The Detective Pikachu movie is great went back and saw it two extra time in theaters!! You don’t have to know about the games to enjoy it either not just the detective pikachu game but like any Pokémon game. You can go in with zero knowledge and still have fun!
I've never seen the Sonic movie. It didn't look like something that interests me but at the end you mentioned Detective Pikachu. I absolutely love the movie but as a heads up it's honestly very different from the game's story. That's really the only problem I have with the movie but that's not really a problem.
Well it doesn't go seriously off the source material, plus I'm guessing a lot of people who watched Detective Pikachu didn't play the game in the first place and probably played Pokemon in general
@@1PressL2P Probably, or in my case I played it and other Pokémon games so my family took me too see it. Another problem I thought of is the villain just feels like he's just kind of there.

I watched the Sonic movie last year when the pandemic had only just begun. It was amazing. Whoever says the movie is bad probably didn't even watch it.
Apparently, a ton of reviewers were even asking to see this movie with Sonic's old design. I was like "Why?"

My biggest complaint about the movie is the lack of iconic Sonic tunes. Music's a big part of the games and the film felt lacking.
I can explain that cause I was feeling the same way. This is certainly setting up for a sequel, so to introduce all this Sonic music to new people now would through them off and all over the place. I at least think it was best for them to do what they did and only use a little so that they can learn Sonic (hopefully go seek out his music on their own) and then insert TONS more Sonic music in the sequel.

I saw this movie on premiere night with friends and we definitely were annoying to be in a theater with because we were geeking at all of the references (especially Sanic)
I think my bro and I were also the 2 that knew the most about Sonic going in when I saw it.
Sonic was the only video game more I’ve seen and enjoyed, with the exception of detective pikachu because I wanted to see that one but didn’t get to. That being said, I’m hoping that the Uncharted movie and The Last of Us TV series are done well and will be enjoyable.

There was the first one in 1995 and then the sequel Mortal Kombat Annihilation in 1997. The less said about Annihilation the better.

I enjoyed both the Detective PIkachu and Sonic the Hedgehog movies! They were both really good, especially considering how poor film adaption of video games usually are.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree on James Marsden not being good in Sonic. It's SO hard to act against something that isn't there, and from that perspective Marsden knocked it outta the park; it felt like both of the characters were in the same room the entire time. Marsden is heavily underrated as an actor and it's a shame really. Plus you kinda need a straight man in a film with eccentric characters like Eggman and Sonic and I thought the balance was nice. I was surprised by how good the film was tbf though; I'm looking forward to the sequel!
The Monster Hunter movie was certainly one that didn't meet the mark. However, there were a lot of moments that were basically love letters to the fans. For example, there were characters from the past four games that a lot of people would miss unless you played the games. Unfortunately, for every good scene, there was an equally bad one, which kinda stunk. Honestly, the first half of the movie could've been skipped and not a whole lot would've been changed.
I played Detective Pikachu and am a Sonic fan so when I watched bot movies my thoughts are, Sonic was a better film but not as an adaptation of the game's story it's a good movie that features Sonic, Detective Pikachu is not as good but it is far more faithful to the source material as an adaptation, so it comes down to a better film featuring a game character or a not as good film that actually adapts the game well to the big screen. Regardless Sonic was great.

I bought the movie the day it digitally released & i enjoyed it. It was nice i didn’t have to wait as long to see. (Too bad the reason it released digitally early was because of the pandemic. But again, nice that I didn’t have to wait long to see it)

I think one thing to always keep in mind for the Sonic Movie is that, this movie would have absolutely been horrible if Sonic and Video Game fans didn't speak out against the humanioid CGI thing that Sonic was before.
The line between Video Games and movies draws thinner and thinner by the second. A redesign with this movie and apparently a Day 1 Patch for Cats (2019).

Ick. The spinach. I wouldn't eat it. I watched Sonic as a kid before school. Never could fully watch it most of the time. As had to be out by 7:15A.M. Agree about game movies. Like Resident Evil. Good Sonic was changed for better. Immagine if Metroid came out and until end. Most thought,knew a woman and turns out a man and Metroid was changed into something else.
I've never seen the Sonic movie, not even the second one. Frankly I've never been interested in it, as I'm not the biggest fan of Sonic. Detective Pikachu I did go see though, and it was really good from what I remembered.
I dont know if I would say jim carry was a pefect cast for this movie its just you cant hate jim carry he always carries the whole movie he kinda different from eggman is in the games but I think its fine

The Sonic Movie to me was a (B-). I definitely laughed more than I groaned or facepalmed, however, there was still too much cringe to be higher than it is. Jim Carrey is a gem and a perfect cast for Dr. Robotink. As a Genesis and SA2 Battle fan, I enjoyed the film and was glad to have seen it in theaters. Looking forward to the sequel that will come in the "after times".
