Yes I am incredibly mediocre at the game, thank you for noticing.

I think the most interesting thing about mmbn progression is how it sorta reflects real life from the early 2000s.
What I mean is, early in the series, and the anime, Lan jacked in to appliances using a cable. Wifi connection wasn't mainstream in the early 2000s either.
It wasn't until later in the series that jacking in to devices with a wireless signal became a thing. It just happened to be around the time wifi internet connection became the norm.

So I will attempt to start entire World Wars, manipulate this child into soaking himself in super-cancer-causing radiation, raise someone else's child to help me in this endeavor in the future, and indirectly be the entire reason this series even exists, so I can have revenge against my ”best friend”.

This game was pretty dark. Especially that one NPC who does the quiz side quest. A quiz champion or something died, but his regrets for someone to solve his quiz, possess a small child. Problem is he possess the kid for like 80 years, so when Lan beats the quiz and the quiz guy leaves the body, the kid wakes up as a very old man with no memory of what happened. Lost his family who are certainly dead by now and his whole life to a crazy quiz ghost.

As much as I love the Battle Network series, I loathe how it completely and utterly forgets previous characters. Shun comes back in BN3 and says like 2 lines of dialogue and that's it, never mentioned again. There's an entire arc centered around saving Mamoru and he also never comes back and is never mentioned again. Hell, I'm pretty sure they don't even point out how Gregar and Gospel are basically the same creature.

Mamoru is indeed the kid in the wheelchair.
Gospel = mass of bugfrags gathered artificially
Gregar = mass of bugfrags that gathered naturally

Oh ok." or maybe "Hey Lan we're still plugging into the server, go ahead and delete whatever those copies are." What's more this crazy super villain would have seen everyone walk into the room, plug into his computer, and then have their navis run to megaman. Chaud must've been standing literally in front of him for a solid 5 minutes and only now realizes who he is. The review was pretty good so far, although a few things to note:
V2 version’s of Bosses are always in 1 location, although they are invisible. You have to defeat them before v3’s become random encounters. Also generally, each area will have 1 Boss Ghost Data in the region (Airman for Den Area, Quickman for Kotobuki, Cutman for Yumland, Knightman for Netopia, Magnetman for the early areas of the Undernet, Shadowman for the first part of the Undernet that you don’t need to access as apart of the main story, and Freezeman in the deepest part of the Undernet. The Secret Bosses, except Bass Deluxe stay in the WWW Area they controlled.)
Also I’m surprised you never mentioned the Field effects or specifically that the Dev’s must hate Freezeman as he takes 4x the damage from Elec attacks thanks to his Elemental Weakness + Field negative effect.
Also side note - Knightman can eventually get to your field, but he’s still very slow.

    • @FalcorRedDragon
      @FalcorRedDragon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

I am surprised nobody mentioned this under this comment, but me personally didn't know some specific thing for a long time as well.
Soo... among all the SubChips there's a special one (and pretty expensive) that's called LocEnemy. When used, it raises the odds of the setup of the latest battle for some time, making it easier to farm specific chips. This can be used when player just met v3 navi somewhere in the internets to increase the amount of free attempts to beat the bestest chip out of this navi.
This makes v3 encounters not _that_ random as it might seem. But still more random than necessary.

    • @Megamanlanprime
      @Megamanlanprime 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@FalcorRedDragon there is another way to manipulate the odds as well - if you save and keep resetting the game after you find an encounter it’s more likely that you can guarantee that encounter (basically go LockEnemy, Save, go for a random encounter. Ah, I have so much nostalgia. Battle Network 2 was my first entry into the series, being one of my first GBA games, (my brother had the misfortune of getting Battle Network 4 first, lol), and although I started on a completed save file which made things confusing, the series definitely hooked me here. I'm glad to see that this entry was where they really figured the formula out, even if it has its flaws such as padding. It's nice to see someone taking a fairly in-depth look at not only a video game series I am massively nostalgic for, but even the specific game I hold closest in memory.
The whole atmosphere of the endgame area was so intense and awesome, that building was literally scary to approach, and yet I couldn't help but be drawn to it. The final boss ends up sticking out in my mind most, even if it's probably the final boss that gets talked about the least (despite its relation to Gregar and the expanded role it had in the anime, and the fact that it's just this creepy, vaguely monster-shaped mess of viruses that subverts its mundane appearance with its unstable shapeshifting and constant data barrage). Although as a whole, it feels like Megaman Battle Network 2 feels kind of forgotten, compared to just about everything that comes after-for good reasons, admittedly, especially considering Battle Network 3. I look forward to seeing a review on that nonetheless, as well as checking out more of this channel.

I kid you not, this is the most I've been invested in a video game in so long, even though I have so many game PC games and Switch games that I've barely touched. But....BN2 definitely had issues with pacing and padding. So much so i had to use plenty of Savestates to get by this game....it didn’t help that I sucked at this game too.....(the ice part of the game was such a drag dude....)
Although, BN2 is good, these problems sorta bring the games down a little bit for me. I personally find 3, 5, and 6 to be the best games in the series, and they also happen to be my favorites.

I'm happy for that. Because they force you to have sub-optimal battlechips and also not use them until you get them all lined up. Then you also need to memorize the program advance itself and you also can't afford to have it miss or be blocked.
I'm really glad Capcom wasn't timid with the program advances. It's something Konami really struggled with in early Yugioh. You often had a lot of convoluted ways to summon monsters but they were too timid to actually make those monsters powerful enough to be worth the investment.
A program advance usually needs 3 chips and also some other hassle so it needs to be better than 3 good chips are combined.

I gotta say, as much as I love this game and have quite an emotional, nostalgic connection to it, being probably my favorite Battle Network in the series, it was also technically the first video game I ever played as a kid that completely caught me off guard with all of its suggestive and overall dark, morbid story content, considering it's supposed to be kid-friendly. Thus, it introduced me to the concept of real-world problems early on in life. At the time of first playing this, I was about 11 years old and oblivious to just how devastating and tragic the 9/11 incident was, which I realize now in retrospect that the airplane hijacking scenario could be closely comparative to. That, and the game's final chapter in Kotobuki is basically Chernobyl. Same kind of situation at least.
Overall, it's probably the darkest of the Battle Network games, but it was more than fun and suspenseful enough for me to want to keep playing through to the end, and really left an impression on me. I still enjoy coming back to it every once in a blue moon (no pun intended) as it's a constant, fond memory from my younger days

That's the part that makes you say that? Not Yai saying Lan missed out on seeing her naked? Or Arashi being bombed? Or the literal 9/11 scenario?

Imperfect game or otherwise, this is my favorite one. Which, given 3 and 6's status among the fanbase, probably sounds insane at first, but there's something about the completely irreverent writing style that makes it way more fun to read. As far as gameplay...one one hand, Freezeman's scenario is the worst fucking thing and I almost stopped - the only thing that kept me going was knowing that there was only one real dungeon left and it's cool as hell. On the other hand, 3 has Press, EnergyChange, and DarkMind, and the NaviCust feels more like a stupid gimmick than an actual customization tool, and 6...I love BN6 to death but that game basically begs you to snap it it half over your knee. It's more of a power fantasy, but no one thing lasts long enough for me to really indulge in that.
BN2 is the best and I will fight you over it, is what I'm saying.
That said, you're underestimating HubStyle's requirement. You have to S-Rank _every_ V3 Navi in the game. That includes the postgame ones. So by the time you get it, literally all that's left is the superboss, and I think a jacked-up version of Gospel. And it doesn't carry over if you find Hard Mode, even, which is a shame. But...at least you can melt PVP?

Agree, I think it has the best story, the best looking internet, and dungeons that arnt completely tedious.

    Small corrections:
snakeman ducks into his pot when you are in the same row as him. only when hes attacking does he not hide but if you arent in his row you can use any chip that can hit him to mess him up, problem is you probably dont have many of those if you dont know the glory that is gater (which is way too broken tbh) and due to the row of holes normal swords wont work either. but at least in this game life sword is nbot garbage and hits in a 2x3 so it works.
Not only do forums and random npcs have hints for the program advances but in either bn1 or bn2 someone talks about sequence pas. those being the same chip but in following codes.
like cannon a b c making zeta cannon. this second type is one players probably find on their own, or lifesword cause the anime makes such a big deal about it and even on a rewatch that arc is super hype.
About the broken teleporters and the shortcut cube in netopia
Gospel id comes from a sidequest you can engage in at some point in the game (i forgot where they all unlock)
the broken teleporters can be activated with gate keys, you can get most of those before freezeman however.
problem 1: the game doesnt tell you about most of these, only one is story required
problem 2: the ONE FUCKING SCENARIO taht would benefit from a fast travel, BLOCKS ALL GATE KEYS AND OTHER JACK IN POINTS to not break the scenario
problem 3: the gate keys can only be activated from the portals infront of lans hp, NOT the point where they lead to.
tho thats why sneakrun exists, it doesnt fix this freezeman scenario, but makes it more bearable.

My favourite childhood game. I think it took me over a year to complete. being 6 years old, not speaking English, and not having internet to help me. And with complete I mean beating the main boss. I couldn't get past the second WWW area. Good times.

Good thing you didn't try the sub plot with Bass/Forte and complete deck. Took me over 6 months to do that, and Bass V3 took at least half that time. Fuck that Aura!!!!!

Also, I may just be abit out of the loop here, but...Why the name redaction? Is that particular area of the net's name somehow offensive?

Nah, Name Redacted is just a dumb joke I came up with to avoid saying Yumland because it's such a lazy stupid sounding name.

Also I had the guide and the map.for windwaker, so while playing other sections I picked up shards so I never had the issue people had with padding. And even on a recent second playthrough of MMBN2 I still don't mind the padding of the ice since I can just play those sections while watching tv or something.

Wait, you had to travel to Net Area 2 to the Undernet on Freeze Man's scenario? You didn't really have to when you can just jack in to Mrs. Millions' purse which leads you to Netopia Area 3 close to the undernet.

  • @seanakima50515e

    Changes
Dont hide Sean in that green haired form show him from start and after each defeat build up his motivation and reveal his backstory
Bass: had no part in this game other than his endgame scene of him deleting his copies then we fight him in gospel area
The backtracking from netopia to the Undernet was ridiculous they ran out of ideas during the Freezeman portion when all they had to do was fit in 1 more boss fight with a navi like idk Iceman
Reveal that Sean inherited Iceman from his father who helped WWW in the first game operating Iceman (yes I'm saying retcon that generic NPC to be Sean)
He battles lan before they get to Freezeman to test him before the final battle, they lose Sean gets rid of Iceman for being weak and losing twice. (Showing his insecurities as he doesnt want to be a loser like he views his dad for letting him get kidnapped)
    Then everything plays out
