      Its a good list but I would criticism the down sleeping bag and mat. Down becomes useless when wet.
      I have a lot more cloths in mine as well.

      I love down stuff but it rips too easy for long term survival. I was homeless for years after the military, unless there is sone ultra tough technology I dont know about all the down stuff rips easy.

    Hi Lilly. One of my favourite items for cold weather is a hot water bottle. If my feet are cold I'm miserable. Throw the hot water bottle into the bottom of your sleeping bag and your feet will be great. Can be moved around as needed. Also works as emergency canteen. Works to keep hands warm when doing cold weather work that you can't do while wearing gloves. They come in different sizes, and can be had at some Buck shops for 2 or 3 dollars.

    Thank you for the well thought out video !
    Like you, I am not a marine or big guy who can carry 60-80 lbs in a pack like some videos show.
    Also, many videos love to focus on GADGETS and redundancies after redundancies. You are one of the FEW that actually STARTS with and emphasizes the importance of WARM (appropriate) SHELTER.
    People just don't give enough consideration to the FACT that cold weather doesn't mean you are "uncomfortable" or "chilly" it means you could DIE.
    TOSS OUT ALL THE GADGETS and put a SLEEP SYSTEM IN ANY SURVIVAL BAG that you would bet your life on in your area's worst "weather". (That may be Mosquitoes).
    Your video emphasized the right focus - warm shelter in a cold area and minimal - MINIMAL - gear.
    You won't be out there "playing" with cool gadgets. You'll be fighting to stay warm/cool, hydrated, walk (blisters), stay healthy, and keep your survival mood POSITIVE (food).
    THANK YOU not only for myself - but for others in advance.
    WELL DONE.

    Nice kit Lilly :) Covers nicely all the essential. And one can always add stuff according to their needs and preferences. My favorite sleeping bag for winter is the Carinthia Finnish army model sleeping bag with nomex fabric lower part. And if it gets really cold I can fit my Pro Force Challenger Lite 150 inside it which makes it super warm combination. Works well even below -30 degrees. And they both fit inside the Carinthia stuff bag. Great video Lilly! Big thumbs up! Greetings from Finland :)

      Buy a cheap sleeping bag and two surplus woolen blankets. Roll it all into a tarp and you will be comfortable. Sleeping on the ground is never nice even with a sleeping mat. They are mostly for insulation. Use grass, leaves or pine branches to prepare your bed.

    This is a great setup. I'd personally add two things, a pencil and "Rite in the Rain" paper or note book. It can help with leaving a message for friends trying to meet up with you or making notes about your surroundings or on your maps. Or even making your own maps.

    • @ghanaboyz
      @ghanaboyz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree. Good call.
      Making notes may also turn out to keep the mind in better working order, and when it is not in that good working order, the notes may be an essential aid to remember things.
      Notes of serious injuries, personal data, treatment etc. can also be a good thing to leave to medics/rescue parties.

And I always have my Daily Pair on a neck line, just in case it falls off. Also, do you have Earbuds for your Radio? You might want to keep the Noise down if you have to Bug Out. Great kit, I think you nailed the essentials. I love that rifle. Only thing I would change, is the blue bag. Blue is a very uncommon color in nature and very easy to see. In an emergency when you want to be seen, it's great. In a SHTF situation, blue isn't the best color. Love your videos!

    Great video. I live in Canada on the prairies and -15 can be a nice day in winter. -45 C is not uncommon. My biggest problem with my winter bag is the trade off of a warm sleeping bag that is not huge and bulky. The Canadian Army sleeping bag is rated to around -45C but the entire kit is almost as big as my entire rucksack.

      @bavarianpotato 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      COBRA one your phone could be a lifesaver. For example having maps on your phone, a backup of wikipedia, possibility of calling people if needed are great ideas. Also you'd have an extra flashlight, a camera (could be useful in some cases), a clock, a calculator and (survival) books with you without wasting a lot of space. Also the battery of smartphones can be used to light a fire in the worst case, or you could use the scren as a mirror for making fire. Also you might want to keep your smartphone, since probably after the emergency situation you will need it again. The only downside of a smartphone is that you could possibly be tracked, but 1 in most cases noone will want to track you 2 if you destroy the sim card, turn off gps and dont use the internet you will be pretty hard to be tracked an 3 if someone wants to find you that bad and has the possibilities to track you by your phone he will probably have other possibilities as well.

    I luv the channel Lilly. Nice to see you back on after the hand. I see this as a good minimal winter setup. Other than the food (consumables) everything else is tools and semi-permanent or long-term use items. TO make the Minimalist Winter pack, little more robust to be more than minimum requirements; i would probably add another layer of warm clothing or wool blanket, swap the tarp out with a real one person tent. And naturally more food. A pretty good choice with the survival rifle as well. I luv your vids, great input. Keep it up Lilly.

    I am getting lots of gear thanks to you... I am filling 2, 55 liter backpacks with exact gear from tarps to portable stoves, ponchos , saws,4 forms of fire making, underarmour cold gear I already had ,duck tape etc... and my bicycle too with 100 liters capacity with front and back panniers, a bug out for me means 7 days on your own , basically camping for 7 days to survive , I live in los angeles California and waiting for the next big earthquake,so I know what happen last time!... anyways ,thanks for your videos and reminders Lilly!... your fan.

    • @johncampbell335
      @johncampbell335 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Frank, hi. 210 litres is overkill. With that much gear and the proper skills, you could support 10 people for a week in California. You need to do some trial runs and see what you *really* need. No hate, just harsh, my internet friend: that's too much for a 1week solo. Seriously. Take a hard look at that.

    • @FixedByDoccom
      @FixedByDoccom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Frank C i do bicycle touring and only carry around 55ltrs for about 7 days. 65ltrs for a 10 day trek. i load mine into a BOB YAK trailer and my gear weighs less than 40lbs for a 10 day trip. not including bike and trailer weight of course. i think you are way over packing for sure. i am also an extreme cross country backpacker as well. ive sectioned hiked parts of the AT, PCT, NCT, GET, and many other trials. I am getting ready to leave April 2nd for a 6 month long 2185 mile Appalachian Trial hike. my pack for this trip is only 40lbs with 5 days food and 1 day emergency rations and 2ltrs of water. and i even have a tablet computer and camera to document the trip and upload to my website as i go. this backpack is capable of carrying up to 85ltrs but i only have about 65-70ltrs in it and it is mostly fluff from my down hammock quilts. i suggest you pack up what you think you need then head out and actually do a practice run and stay out for 3-5 days. take a journal. use it to make a list of everything you took with you prior to leaving. then as you use something for a needed purpose put a check mark by it. when you get home look at list and remove anything without a check mark from your packing list as it is not needed. other than 1st aid. your bike may have wheels but you still need to be able to pedal it with all that weight. it is harder than you think.

    • @frankc6430
      @frankc6430 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FixedByDoc Homesteading true that it is a lot of gear but I stated that I have the capacity to carry over 100 liters between the bike and me , not that I had, yet....and if I do it for pleasure travel then is not the same as for bug out survival, I will overload because I won`t be returning for a long while... the whole point was that it is another way of transporting yourself out and away of an emergency situation... I got all 3 of my panniers frames installed and the 4 bags ready to get loaded...today just got my portable wood stoves and also waiting for my 2 person tents... I will know how much all weight when I get it all here and will start riding with more weight to get use to it...I am not to worry about 40 -50 lbs... I am estimating to be hauling at least 80lbs of weight clipped on the bike then I will see how much to carry on me on a back pack if I need it... like I said , it is on the overweight side if using it as a bug out prepping, a disaster event,not coming back... if it is for just travel for pleasure of course I will just take gear and food for the days I need to be out , not more , not less...two different scenarios....last earthquake here in Los Angeles the roads broke and cut of the mayor supply route to the city. lucky for me I live on the north outside edges of LA and after the quake there was only 1 road , not freeway , a road ,open to enter thru the north side , 4 miles of bridges fell making a 2 minute pass take over 8hrs of chaos and we had no water or electrical services for 3 days , the epicenter in Northridge about 25 miles away looked like bomb had dropped in and services for millions took over a month to be reconnected in many areas... disaster can happen anywhere anytime and los angeles is due to another big earthquake since the Northridge one I think now 20 years and it has been too calm, that`s why many preparedness and emergency agencies keep saying to who want to listen to be ready with no less than a 7 days on your own, survival gear and food because the government will have their hands full .... at home at least I have my generator ,extra canned and dry food and fresh and a barrel of water set aside, and bbq stoves and plenty of gas....now this is all my new camping/ survival gear up to date and a plan in case shit to bug out, I need to see where to go now ,so getting maps of parks. forests going north from LA, south is where 8 million people live in the middle of a city!

    I think you have the ideal amount of items in your kit right now Lilly since the purpose of that kit is to get you to your Bug Out location. And, you are right, too much "stuff" can be a big problem depending on the situation, especially if you have to E&E. If you are encumbered by pounds and pounds of extra items and you have to run for your life, what will most people do? They will dump their pack to get away, then they have zero. If it is light and nimble, you will not have to ditch it. Excellent common sense! Great video as always!

    @bluebellanon330 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good video. Never commented before but I always enjoy your videos.
    I'd maybe add a few hot drink sachets to your food supply (instant hot choc or coffee) and some hard sweets - they don't weigh much or take up much room and the sugar and caffeine would give you a bit of a boost.
    I'd also think about adding some Vaseline - you can get really handy little tins and it's useful for chapped skin or to help with fire-lighting.

  • @thomaschainey3230
    @thomaschainey3230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video thanks ☺️. I agree having a realistic bug out bag weight with just the essentials. But take a extra bug out pack, bug out roll, bug out bag or box or duffle bag as a extra needed supplies that can and would be left behind in a stash if you could not take a vehicle, horse, dog sled, boat, cart or wagon. You do not have to take it if you do not want to but you can not take the extra stuff if you want to if you do not have it. Having a bug in plan and bug out plan with different bug out locations is good if possible.

    Very nice kit. You have everything pretty much covered. I'd also suggest that wherever your planned evacuation area is you might want to cache some extra supplies. (more ammo, food, extra gear and such) That way you have something to fall back on if say something accidentally destroys your shelter.

    Nice bit of kit there Lilly, unfortunately I have a large family so I will always have a huge kit for us to use, but the daughters are now getting to the age where I can start to break down the kit and have them carry the options they need to survive; my 12 yr old is already there with her own Get Home Bag, and its easier to have redundancy with multiple packs and kits around.

    Hi Lilly I love watching you , not very much girls are going in the wild and try doing survivals trip ... Plus you are from Canada , and I am too so it's more interesting watching someone from your country .. ! I try to learn everything you say in all of your episodes and each time I can , I go in the wild and try to make a shelter, try to make a fire without lighter or matches .... I try to survive with almost nothing ... And it makes me feel that I live the good way , im tired of society or being stuck in my 4 walls appartment .... When I m in the wild , i feel very good even in my mind ....

    Great video- they always help me re-evaluate my set-up. It's probably worth considering a few other 'what-ifs', a lot of people who have to leave their homes are directed or wisely go to red cross or local aid centres and spend their time in a large hall sleeping on a cot with hundreds of other people. Some are able to go to a friend or family's place. Whether you go there or to the woods having copies of important documents and a few things for the chance that you will be stuck in town and need ID and/or will need documents when it's all over and you have to re-establish yourself. I really think that as much as it's good to be prepared for bugging out to the woods most of the time the better option is to go to the next town where shelter, water, and food are already available. I know that it's not always an option but probably good to consider it. There is also the growing reality that most people in the world don't have any woods nearby.

    Great video, Lilly! I am one of those "overkill" survivalists except I do leave the kitchen sink where it belongs. I have four bug out bags and depending on the situation(s) I'll grab the bag that fits the event. If it was just me who had to bug out I have a 40 liter pack with everything I need to survive for at least a week before any hunting, snaring, fishing had to be done. My winter bag is a MARPAT ILBE which can carry up to 120 lbs and with the proper menu planning I could survive for months. My choice of weapon is an antique 20ga shotgun since small game would be all I would hunt. I must say, however, that rifle you have is a beaut! Again, you are an incredible teacher and love learning from you.

      That's funny because i have thought about that quite a few times. I have 2 cats which I love to death. 1 will follow me anywhere i go but the other is an older female that would rather lay on the floor next to the food bowl all day than do anything. As hard as it would be to leave them behind, i think they would survive perfectly well on their own as hunters or scavengers. Definitely be hard to part with them though.

      Interesting subject. I would not abandon my pets, but many people would justify doing so or think it would be better. The problem I see is that when you have whole neighborhoods leaving animals to run loose it would become a problem. There would be thousands of hungry cats, dogs, and whatever trying to scavenge food or elicit food and companionship from any humans they find.

    I'm not sure if it's what you were saying, Lilly, but it'd be best in my opinion to have all your "extra" stuff that you'd expect to carry in your car packed separately from your primary bag, that way if you have to ditch it in a hurry, you're able to do so.
    I used to keep a very nice little kit in my car that was packed into a small zip up tool bag that had a pretty nice medical capability, basic tools, lights, fire starters, rudimentary shelter elements, wayfinding tools, signaling devices, as well as three days worth of food and 1 day of water (with stuff to prepare more water). It got stolen when my car did, unfortunately, and I never got it back.

      You don't "bug out" unless you need to, of course. If you feel you won't need to, then don't prepare. I wouldn't assume the government would be there for me very soon after a major incident. Given the history of poor government response, I'd be ready to take care of myself for a few days, at least. Have you seen what hurricanes and tornadoes can do? What earthquakes can do? They can devastate very large areas. A nuclear incident can make a large area uninhabitable. No one is telling you what to do, they are telling you what they do. You don't have to listen. Why are you watching this channel if you believe you won't need to prepare for any incidents?

I don't trust either party! Republicans or Democrats! If they ever tried to disarm citizens here in the U.S. There would be a civil war! It is always the first step a tyrant government takes tries to take. But the solar flare, or an EMP would be devistating. 98% of all Americans would be dead within 6-8 months, and any other countrys that depend on cars, & electricity.

    Lilly, Great video. I only have one suggestion, based on my 3000 meter high Rocky Mountain location in Colorado, USA. The Sawyer water filter can freeze up and fail. Not only freeze in cold weather, but the internal micro-tubes can fail and not filter at all. You may never know your filter has failed. I suggest boiling or using a Steripen classic. Talk to Aron at Kifaru about the problems and solutions I have outlined. He is very good at high altitude hunting, hiking and survival.

    You're better off with more dehydrated "ingredients" (like the rice) and less MREs. The sawyer mini doesn't last as long as the squeeze. A menstrual cup will last longer than a handful of tampons. Good idea with the titanium kit for hot water in your bag. Downside of the poncho: you can only set up your shelter in the rain carrying your pack. Take the pack off, and it's unprotected. Great video! Love your channel!!!

    When I think of a bug out bag it's typically a 72 hr bag. In addition to much of what you described it would also include enough clothing for that same period of time. One of the most common uses of these bags weren't necessarily due to major disasters but from situations where say family members were hospitalized and the individual grabbed the bag to take with them while they stayed that family member at the hospital. Many think of these bags as short term survival bags but in reality they're more of a short term preparation bag that contains many of the basic tools needed for survival.

    This is a realistic bag and well thought out. My only real criticism is it would be preferable to have a weapon that was easily concealable. Also depending on terrain and area (if it’s winter with snow all around it’s not an issue or if streams and rivers are plentiful) it might be wise to have the capability to carry slightly more water. In cheap plastic bottles that can be discarded. Great job Lilly.

I agree completely with the gear you're carrying, but I would also take a jar of peanut butter. It's good for quick energy, protein, and bait for traps. I'd also skip the tampons ;-)

    Honestly, must of us are never going to need a bug out bag, but if you are going to build one and have electronics I would suggest adding a solar panel. I use the Anker 21W Dual USB Solar Charger because it has some really good power output (21w and 2.4 amp output or 3 amps total if you use both ports) for the price and weighs in at under a pound.
    Also, I like the Anker PowerCore 26800 Portable Charger battery. It has twice the power storage, three USB output (which the only Lilly showed also has three USB out and they both are 2.4 amp out with a max of 3.4 or this one at 3 amp).
    The difference is the Anker battery can dual charge at 2 amp per port which helps it charge much faster and it has twice the power with only about 7 oz more weight.
    So my suggestion would add around 21 oz, but it has more power storage and a solar power option. A backup battery is going to die and it will die quickly if it's cold and you have no way to recharge it.

    Love this. I'm putting together B.O.B.s for my family: one main one, with a bag inside that can be used to split up the load between my husband and I (he doesn't have a proper hiking backpack yet, and I want it all to be in one place anyways in case the SHTF while he's at work and I need to bug out with the kids to our meetup location), as well as lightweight bags for my kids containing the bare bones essentials (an emergency bivvy bag, a change of clothes with two changes of socks, a water bottle, a spork, a notebook and pencil for entertainment or note-leaving, a small flashlight, and some lightweight snacks...their sleeping bags will also get attached, but they hang in the closet to keep them from collecting moisture, until we use them for camping or bugging out).
    I have very similar gear to what you carry in our main bag, so it's good to know I'm on the right track. It's a struggle for me to keep it all lightweight enough for me to carry on my own (when I go backpacking I carry 20-30lbs, depending on the pace I want to set), but so far it's looking good. The good news where I am is that water is fairly plentiful, so our food is 100% dried to save on weight.
    I live in Alberta, where the Fort McMurray wildfire evacuation happened. Take Lily's advice, people, and have a Bug Out Bag!!
