      Survival Lilly can you make a video on how you make a wool sleeping bag... I'm 15 and I've been going through a bunch of issues recently with my mental health, including depression and anger issues, but I noticed when I'm making things like that or when I'm out in the woods I'm in a much better mood and I'm happy and that's who I want to be, I am working on getting stuff together and getting the knowledge to be able to work up to staying days in the woods over this sumer without any food or any of my own water, any advice would be great, thanks 😊

      Hello Brenton. The most important thing is to keep dry and warm. After that it’s drinkable water. After that it’s food. Sleeping bags like the blanket only is a desperate solution. Sleeping bags can be quite cheap but at fifteen I guess you don’t have much access to money. Keep your eye out for an old duvet which you can use as a sleeping bag by folding it over and close one side with safety pins to close temporarily or sew it. The only problem is they are not designed to compress so are bulky. The other thing I used was a builders tarpaulin (cheap or can be acquired quite easily) to make canopies to sleep under and or make a ‘camping hammock’, can also double up as a kind of poncho so even if you’re walking in heavy rain you can wrap it around you and your rucksack to keep everything dry. Google ‘camping hammock’ to see what they are like. You can easily make a hammock, they keep you off the ground so are comfy / dry and if the tarpaulin is big enough it will cover over the top of you too but they can also be used on the ground as a ‘Bivvy Bag’. 3 meters by 3 meters is the minimum really. Next thing is how to make fire. Lighters are not a good option for long periods in the wild as they run out after a week or so so you really want a ‘fire steel’ to make sparks and fire. One will last most of your life. Another thing you want is an axe or machete or parang type tool. Machete or parang can chop wood to build shelters / fire and be used to cut up food and skin animals. TH-cam will have loads of ideas about your survival questions so do a google search to find answers. Good luck. Try and get help for your depression.

    I love the minimalist idea. I put together a similar pack but without the blanket being stitched, (that is brilliant). Added a car windscreen heat shield as an underbody insulating mat and used tin can and plastic drink bottle as potentially easy to find or replace whilst out and about. Not yet used in anger though. So, much respect and thanks for posting your vids.

    Had a thought.... what about attaching tarp material to the bottom of the homemade Sleeping bag / Pack.... that way it wouldn't soak up moisture or water while it's on the ground OR being used as a pack....

    Wow, look at all these comments. Great video. I've tried many sleeping bag/blanket combinations. For me, wrapping myself in the blanket and then getting in the sleeping bag worked best. Sleeping bags insulate by creating a dead air space so if you put one inside the blanket and flatten it, it will lose it's ability to insulate. Wrapping yourself in the blanket first will keep you from kicking out of it at night too.

    Lilly-A little hint about mosquitoes. I live in the US and our state bird is the mosquito. I learned from a guy who lived in the wild all summer long that the best way to get rid of mosquitoes is to eat 2-3 cloves of garlic a day, starting a month or so before going into the woods. I have tried it and I can tell you while everyone else was being eaten alive, I never got bit.

    • @11alliLo
      @11alliLo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is true! My husband loves garlic and onions so he eats a lot of it. Whenever we go fishing or do any outdoorsy kinds of things he never gets bit while everyone else gets eaten alive! lol!

    • @bashfulbrother
      @bashfulbrother 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      11alliLo I tested it out one fall in the mosquito matrix. For some reason the odor of the garlic can't be smelled by humans, but I have seen mosquitoes come in to land and then they get about an inch away from my skin and they do a 180 and are gone.

    first suggestion : find some steel core adjustable bungee cords to hold the bedroll together and to mount your shoulder straps to .
    2. find a small duffel bag (military surplus) to put the bedroll in for protection from the trail and the weather.
    3. a 55 gallon drum liner, to line your duffel. it helps to keep the bed roll dry and adds & aid's in flotation if you should drop it in a stream

    If it rains you will go so soaked in that poncho hooch. I’ve used poncho hoo he’s for decades and I can tell you that if you don’t secure the head of the pinch by pulling it away and securing it the hood will fill up and invert.
    As for the fire bow it would be much easier to carry marches, a lighter and a ferious rod or steel and flint. Cute bows require a fairly large expenditure of calories to start a fire and are much harder to use than anything that I’ve mentioned in the previous sentence.
    Your sleeping bag is a good idea. I like that you sewed it so that will stay closed. You get points for that.
    I’m not just some yahoo that likes to slam people’s preps, I’m a former Special Forces operator and they trained me in all sorts of survival skills. And I just plain get my kicks out of practicing bushcraft.

    I am also a long time student of Dave Canterbury. The US military use to issue wool 'mummy' bags, but those are very hard to find. Larger bodies may wish to buy a 100 percent winter weight blanket that are much larger from Hudson Bay, or Woolrich. The price is worth it if you need top quality and performance. Typical military blankets are of minimal size and are often a wool blend. Jørn

    Great setup!!! Very similar to my own, except I carry a Honey Stove ti for added versatility and an ENO ProNest hammock. I liked the use of your knots. Most people, even the pro's, overlook that. Looked like you were using a rolling hitch to cinch your bedroll and probably your tarp line as well. Try the blake's hitch for added security and it's just as easy to tie and take apart after a little practice. The rolling hitch tends to slip on synthetic cord.

    One item you could add to your kit that is very light weight and was extremely valuable in my Army time in Alaska is the quilted poncho liner that goes with your poncho. It's extremely lightweight and can be collapsed and crushed down to a very small size. It has snaps that attach to the inside of the poncho so you can stay warm if in a cold rain. But it also works fantastic as an internal wrap around blanket you could use inside your wool sleeping bag you have. The heat retention with that liner is amazing and it really makes all the difference between a chilly night and being warm. Couple bucks at a Army/Navy surplus store. Wouldn't go in the woods without it.

    First and fore most, the dog seemed to be having a lot of fun out there....lol.
    Ok, now for the "Pack". First, you idea with the shoulder straps was a good one, while new ones might be better, use what you got or can get for your budget.
    Secondly, You might want to consider buckle straps of some kind instead of paracord tied in knots, firstly for quicker deployment(because of bad weather), secondly for better closure.
    Next, you may want to consider using the Poncho as your Outer layer instead of the blanket. For one, its water proof thus the gear inside won't get wet if it rains. Number two, putting your blanket down on wet ground to unroll it just to get to the Poncho if it rains or snows or whatever....its likely to get wet and muddy which means your not sleeping comfortable(wool or not).
    So as for the tools, the Hatchet is a good idea, but, since you are already wearing a belt with a knife on it, you may want to consider adding an "Ax Frog" to it, basicly just a metal ring hanging from the belt you can slide the ax/hatchet into and have access to it....it will also lighten your pack up a bit.
    I LOVE your bow drill, specially the skateboard wheel, smart idea, and while I don't think you NEED to bring the Block or stick.....if you have room, its not a bad idea since you know it works, sometimes in the wild that is the problem, not all wood materials act the same. Speaking of fire stuff though, I would recommend you add a few other Fire Starters to your kit, just in case, I recommend a Magnesium block or a good Fire Steel, maybe a Fire Piston.......and a 'little' more tinder wouldn't be so bad either, trying to start a fire with WET material sucks.
    Only other things I can say, you can NEVER have enough Cordage.
    P.S. Loved the Sleeping bag idea, that was great, I might even try that myself.....

    • @MaZEEZaM
      @MaZEEZaM 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Ideas, I would also suggest perhaps taking a mozzie net other than the head one though I guess if you can seal yourself in the sleeping bag well enough not to allow them in you would be fine. I wish I had an area I could just let my dog wonder freely like her dog, not sure I would enjoy him getting back in the car when all dirty though :D Jumping in the river and walking across a dusty track right before he gets back in the car is bad enough for my dog :)

      I haven't seen her carry the same exact kit twice; all about knowing where you're going, resources available there.
      For myself I tend to have a regular weight I'm accustomed to and will add or subtract based on that, especially for casual outings. Maybe a bit more if for a specific task in mind, but too much leads to less fun, more energy, more food & water, so that makes more weight which means more effort and so more supplies....

    Nice packing! I would add a water filter and a dry bag with valve that you can plug to a tube. The idea is to put water into the drybag, then let it decant for a moment, and then open the valve and filter that clear water. This will allow your filter to last much longer and allows you to use a muddy water. You can also carry a lot of water in the drybag if needed, as well as other stuffs, and of course use it as a drybag to put your main bag in or your clothes and make it a pillow. It can also make a shower. Purification tabs are usefull, but you can boil the water if you don't have it. Colloidal silver generator is a good option for purifying water and heal yourself. If we talk about survivalism, i would also add a cheap Baofeng radio like UV-5RTP (30€). I really like your sleepbag!

    I am no expert but from my experience I can tell that sleeping with the earplugs is not the best idea. I had a couple of near misses with wild boars in the middle of the night and I'm pretty glad I had heard them as early as I had.

      If the wind blowing even a little it gets fairly noisy and difficult to distinguish sounds. Big animals like bear and boar have a low frequency rumble that can be heard easily throu earplugs. Actually filtering the background noise, easier to detect patterns; I've heard (and chased off) chipmunks (we call the striped ones "timber tigers") who seem to be developing the ability to pull open zippers.
      If you're in any sort of valley or around a lake, sound can carry really far and the effect of sound bouncing along water (don't know the physics of that but I know the reality) or rock (lots of granite here) makes distance perception difficult, especially the higher pitched tones; and I don't need to know what what every critter is up to around miles of shoreline.
      In later videos she carries trip wire alarms and makes perimeter with fishing line.
      Do boar molest sleeping people? I've had passing javelina and just don't pitch camp on a animal path (more for fear of being stepped on by elk).

    I can't sleep in a wool blanket either, same problem as Lily; I just roll out of it. Making a sleeoing bag from it may be a good idea but if I did I would not put any grass in it as suggested. I would make some sort of bed of fir tree branches, leaves, grass, sheep wool and anything else in the area and use as an insulating layer underneath the blanket. This is where a big plastic bag of some kind is essential kit. It stops the bed spreading out all over the place and the bag weighs hardly anything at all. A tip though, if you want a good sleep when its cold and don't want to carry much go for a 'Thermorest' self inflating mat. I have spent, altogether, three weeks sleeping on one this year and cannot fault it.

    A cotton bag was used traditionally as a mattress. The mattress was called a "tick". It was used in America in the 1700s and possibly before. Men carried a smaller tick into the field well into the early 1900s and stuffed them with debris. Of course plastic 55 gallon drum liners would work well especially for wet conditions. A Mylar bivvy from SOL, or improvised from a nylon tube tent with one end tied closed, will give greater temperature range than just a blanket. I put the Mylar inside the blanket. The Mylar stops radiation and convection loss from my body. The outside blanket stops conduction loss. The key is if you brought other layers of clothes with you, such as thermals. If lightly clad or if it is raining, put the blanket inside the Mylar bivvy. Happy trails.

      That's Dax, who passed away recently. He was a Small Munsterlander, a hunting breed. He certainly liked to dig. He will be missed, I'm sure, not only by Lilly and her family but by their many fans. Dax was her co-star in many videos.

    Great little video that I enjoyed VERY much! Your dog reminds me of a dog we had in Morocco many years ago (Skeeter...) who loved to dig, roll in mud and make himself totally filthy no matter where we took him! Great dog and wonderful friend of all our neighbors!!! Glad you enjoy taking him on your adventures as I'm sure he enjoys every minute of it! Enjoy and look forward to your future videos!

    Hey Lilly, your selfmade wool-sleeping bag is awesome. Well done! Improving idea: juse the zipper of an old or cheap sleepingbag instead of the stiches at the side. So you can juse it as a blanket or wool-poncho two.

    I can get all skittish at night too when I'm out there but it would freak me out even more to wear earplugs -- can't stand not being fully aware of my surroundings.
    I understand if you have "sound sensitivity" issues -- I'll bet you put these in when you ride that motorcycle! That thing is LOUD!
    Cheers to you, Lilly!

    Great video and pack. If you tied off from the head piece of the poncho to a tree behind, you can pull it up and make a little more "dome" like shape to the shelter. I find it is much better for being able to sit up while under the lean-to tarp. Beautiful knife and an awesome dog! I wouldn't want to sleep with ear plugs in without a great dog to be my alarm system.

  • @rjostusa
    @rjostusa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You might try tying the poncho with one corner lifted up , the other three staked down. Tie a cord around the hood and lift the center up. Adjust the corner stakes to give you more "sidewall". This configuration will provide more length and coverage.
    Do you use a plastic sheet under your blanket to prevent ground moisture wicking up?

    that's enough gear to safely enjoy the outdoors, but not too much... very well done!
    my only suggestion would be to find a way to pack it in such manner that you won't have to completely open the roll every time you want a sip of water (that might cause you to postpone drinking, and that's not healthy).
    p.s. Dex is a miner dog, right? :)

    i thought Dax was digging a shelter for you, lol
    great lightweight kit, I love your adapt/improvise attitude,
    the only doubt i have is if it starts to rain,
    the wool will soak up the damp/rain, and get heavier, and it may retain its warmth
    but crawling into a wet sleeping bag is morale draining.
    Personally (IMO) i'd grab a canvas sack/kit bag and cut it shorter to fit your back size, then attach the webbing yoke to that,

  • @danpeacock1417
    @danpeacock1417 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lilly. you might try a poncho liner and poncho as a sleeping bag, You can sew them together and modify them to your liking to include shortening it up to your satisfaction plus it is not as itchy as wool. Just a thought.

    You know I been wanting to make one of these myself. I wouldn't mind making one with a welders mat sewn inside the wool blanket, with a pocket to slide into and have some natural warm. I heard them heated rocks last for hours. I do like pack option idea though you might be stuck and not have your fancy mancy hi- tech backpack.Only 1 thing though what about Minimalist Survival.Love to see one of your videos with this pack. Maybe I can learn more.Thanks Lily peace

    You have not really thought about weather changes, cold, rain, snow, wind, and the sun. You need some lite gear for the season wind breaker type. As for the ear plugs, I want to know what's coming up behind me when I'm sleeping or if something is getting to close.
    In there place you could carry a cheap big lighter, sometimes the fire kit you have may not work. Matches get wet, bow drill not that good if it get damp.
    Still good video.
    PS. Even going out for a short walk you should take water, if you use it or not, still a good idea.

    While in the U.S. Army. I took 4 big towels with me in the field. Mosquitoes. I would wrap the towel around my head and expose only nose and mouth. I slept like a baby. Also towels keep you warm and dry from rain. The list is long on towels and how to use in the field.

    I have watched many of your videos and like what you do. I found the ear plugs you have in this kit made my ears sore when I wore them at work, so went back to using the yellow foam ones that you squash to put them in, much more comfortable. You have been to some amazing places. Its funny how the Boar always know when you are packing heat, ha , ha. Keep on keeping on.

    I liked the idea of a transformable backpack into sleeping bag, but i think you need to add a waterproof layer on the bottom side of it by needling it to it, cause in wet environments it will quickly soak up with water and become useless.

  • @bushcraftpiper
    @bushcraftpiper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lilly yes a great idea with the self maid wool blanket. All weather depicting having it waterproofed bottom and sides would I think be better and even though you may have a raised bet or so. The waterproofing could be leather of some type and this could ensure that you don't get wet in the blistery weather in the evening.
    Just my thought

    Great vdieo :) but without being a pain instead of the bow drill stuff I would have packed a small Fire Kit complete with the Flint & Steel, which are way better and less energy consuming.... whilst also being more portable. Personally i wouldn't wear sandals in the woods as well. Else, well done for the blanket bag! I think it's a great idea.

    That is a great kit! The only thing I think I would change is having an actual pack or bag. If you come across some wild edibles or happen to catch something, a proper pack can carry more than the roll. Plus once you have camp set, you can gather things in the pack and not have to carry the bivy sack. Kudos!!
